Hey there.
Having a weird issue with my new S8. Without "UHQ Upscaler" enabled, the sound coming out of the headphone jack is bloody awful. It always has a staticy overlay, and sounds like it is coming through a tunnel or something. Even with the Upscaler enabled, I still hear this sound if Bixby is used while the phone is plugged into a jack, or from a few apps that produce audio, such as Google Assistant, Maps, and a few games.
Anybody know a fix for this? I tried to search XDA, but haven't seen anything specifically around this. Few threads on some other communities, but nothing that seems to offer a permanent solution Thanks for any help!
Maybe some effect is turned on. In the settings where you can set the uhq upscaler, there are some effects.
I had this issue too and after a search in sound settings I found the concert hall effect turned on.
I can confirm the poor and dinky sound quality. I'm a little confused und shocked how Samsung can desigend a current top phone with these audio quality.
I use my S8 with an high end AKG headphone. The sound is far too quiet very dull and imbalanced.
Also adapt sound and UHQ upscaler dont deliver a reasonable sound quality
I think the only way is to root the phone and install Viper4Andriod.
My previous phone (LG G4) is known for the sad sound quality but with Viper4Android the sound was much more better the the S8.

One of the first things I checked. Thing is, the muted sound + loud white-noise sound is ever-present if I disable UHQ upscaler, which concerns me. The only fix for the base sound issue I could find was to turn on UHQ upscaler, but this doesn't seem to work on ALL sound on the device, meaning some things default back to that white noisy sound
Not a HUGE issue, but very obnoxious. If it means anything to anybody, I am using an unlocked Snapdragon S8. I have had this issue since I got it out of the box, so it can be confirmed the issue isn't due to a change I made or an installation I did. It is apparently not an isolated issue, and UHQ fixes it in about 90% of cases, so I suspect the issue isn't in the hardware, either
Noisy Samsumg Galxay s8
Anonaru said it's not a HUGE issue, but it is with me. A PHONE, which is an AUDIO DEVICE, shout NOT make annoying noise. Samsung brags about all these features and they can't even make the audio work. That's like an airline telling you, well our airplane can't fly but we have a new seat recliner feature!

Its just the reality of audio in a phone, but this only happens only with In Ear earphones. They are more sensitive to the various electrical interferences coming from the various components of your phone. Use full size headphones and you won't hear any interference.

During voice calls the earphone speaker seems to sound really muddy to me. So much that I cannot understand what the person on the other end is saying if there is a bit of ambient noise around me.
Compared to my 3G iphone it's terrible.
Anyone else experience this or know if the sound through the earpiece can be tweaked?
Hey even i have the same problem. Got my SGS today and iam loving the phone in all of its bits. Excelleny phone but little tiny bugs and issues here and there. hope firmwares and froyo can make a vast difference in the experience. I dont think they can increase earpiece volume with any firmwares.
earphone and speaker quality
I also am having trouble. The speaker sound is "muddy" or muffled. People I call on the Galaxy complain that I am difficult to understand. I don't have any of these problems on my iPhone 3G, it is much clearer.
The headphones are of poor quality and are the ear canal type which I don't like at all as they don't hold in the ear. The ear bud type of headphone are much better (like iPhone) but are not available from Samsung and I have been unable to find or purchase any other brands that work satisfactorily.
A phone is primarily about voice communication and this is where the Samsung Galaxy s i9000 fails and is disappointing. Everything else about the phone is quite good.
I find the earphones to be decent quality (ipod/iphone earpieces suck!!!).
However I do have also have the voice calls problem. It is a little difficult hearing people on the other side, however they don't seem to have any trouble hearing me.
Maybe we can use one of the "secret" menus in the phone to increase the speaker volume? I haven't looked yet.
2G/3G?
When i'm on 3G networks, i get ok sound, sounds a bit muffled, but nothing serious.
When forcing 2G, i get very clear sound with sifficient volume.
I can at least say it's not a hardware problem.
Muddy sound
The headphones do sound ok, the problem that I find is that they will not stay inserted in the ear and block most other sounds hence why I prefer the ear bud types but I guess this is a personal choice. Unfortunately, the choice of headphone is not apparent until the box seal is broken by which time you have agreed to the carrier's contract by breaking such seal. As Samsung have there own headphone socket and impedance design, other manufacturers headphones are not suitable.
The muddy audio is not so much a level problem but a frequency problem. When holding the phone to my ear, the sound lacks some higher frequencies and hence sounds muffled or muddy if you like. Clearly, others are having similar issues. This should be easily fixed by Samsung and perhaps a control to do so would be ideal then it could be adjusted to suit all users.
When I talk to other people on the phone, they complain that I am hard to understand - again the audio is muffled and a little distorted. This should also be easily fixable.

I feel the same too, comparing it with my iphone 3gs and 3g. Another thing that I'm trying to get used to is the inability to control music fully without having to turn on the screen. On my jailbroken iphone I'm able to use either the standard headset to pause, play, forward, backward, volume up, volume down without touching the phone itself. Alternatively I can do all these actions with only the phones volume buttons alone. I usually connect my phone via the 3.5 mm audio jack to external speakers before I sleep and this feature on my jail broken iphone let's me fully control the music without having to turn on and look at the screen. I also miss my music videos which can be combined with the audio musics in the same playlist and played with the screen switched off. I also miss the fine increment in volume level of iphone, where I can have the exactly volume I want.
I'm also experiencing pauses and skips in music playing.
Viewing pictures and movies is a far better experience on SGS though.
I have a whole different problem with regards to the stock earphones. When I listen to music (via Music Player) and have my headphones plugged in, it does not seem to deactivate the external speaker. So I hear the music coming from the external speaker and the earphones. And the sound quality coming from the earphones is just horrible. I've tested this with a number of different earphones. I've also tested this with TuneWiki and get the same results.
I'm using the latest firmware JG5.
Anyone else having this issue as well?
Could it be some design and or manufacturing flaw in the phone jack itself? I find it difficult to fully push the plug kind in to get complete sound. Sometime I get sound from one side only. When trying to push all the way in the music stops saying that the earphone was unplugged.
Ok looks like I worked out how to get rid of the "muddy" sound coming from the handset.
Enter service mode
*#197328640#
Tap [5] Audio
Tap [1] Handset
Tap [9] Diamond Solution
Tap [3] Voice Booster (mine was off)
Tap [1] , press Menu, Enter "1" as value(without "").
Tap [2] hpf_cutoff
Now you can enter anything from 1-8, 1 will sound bassy/muddy and 8 will sound clearer but a tad harsh depending on your hearing. Experiment with whatever suits you, every speaker may be different. I assume hpf stands for high pass filter.
Now if you want even more volume during a call you can change the [5]limit level to a lower value. Mine was on 21 at default. I've set it to 12 for now.
To exit the menu just press Menu then tap end.
My default values were.
[1] off
[2] 8
[3] 8192
[4] 6
[5] 12
Let me know if yours were different.
Thank you for that info. Fortunately, Optus have eventually agreed that my phone was faulty and I am waiting for it to be fixed or replaced. The info you have supplied may be useful for some fine tuning if required.
Is there anyway to boost the speaker volume in those settings?
Tried to find one but tbh I didn't have a clue what all the settings in the speaker menu were
my suggestion switch to bluetooth, there is always a degree of issues related to wired earbuds / headphones / headsets
So I've got my surround for 1 week, and I notice an issue when I am using my headphone. If my wifi is on and I connect my headphone to the device, I hear a
fire cracker sound if I'm not playing any music or videos. It is not obvious which you can only notice it while you are in a really quiet place. So my question is, is it the problem with the surround or the window phone 7. The thing is that if I played music under wifi is on, the fire cracker disappears. Or if I turned the wifi off, it disappears. Has anyone has this cracker sound issue with wifi on? It seems like the antenna has affects the audio jacks or something. But if that is so, why the sound disappear while I'm listen to music??
Normally, when you plug headphones into anything, some noise is produced, just the metal rubbing on metal or w/e, (I'm sure the electrical engineers can explain it to the electrons), but this is a noise I've heard on many devices throughout my electronic experience. I've never seen it as a problem. It seems normal on my Surround, and I tried with WiFi on, off, connected, unconnected, music on, music off, and any other combo I could think of. All of the noises were the same, none louder than the others.
I'm not sure if that is helpful to you, but mine did not change at all.
I understand that. It's just I have never experience a cracker sound like this noticeable. So when u compare the noise to other devices, is it the same?
It sounds like nothing out of the ordinary to me, but you may want some more opinions.
HI there guys.
Brand new to this forum.
I've searched for days and I'm unable to find a solution.
I'm experiencing a crackling or a distortion on phone calls at certain volumes. I noticed it with certain pitches in peoples voices it would cause a vibration in the ear speaker and some distortion in the sound. Kind of like the speaker is being over driven or has too much power going to it. It usually goes away if I turn the volume almost all the way down, but this is obviously not a practical option since I'm not always making phone calls in a dead silent room. The speaker phone works fine. This only happens when I'm using the earpiece. Is this normal? Is it related to the camera autofocus sensor rattle? Are the sound vibrations from a person's voice enough to set off the rattle? It's really annoying as I tend to make phone calls a lot and I don't like using speaker phone or a headset. Does anyone else have this problem?
From what I can tell, it happened and was normal in the S4. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280930).
Please help. Im deciding if i need to return it.

It's too bad that you didn't describe it in more detail.. i.e. give us steps to replicate it. A recording of the distortion would have been helpful too. I haven't noticed what you describe but it sounds like the gain or auto gain is too high and your earpiece speaker is being overdriven.
There is a gain setting in the service mode menu but first you need to distinguish an app issue or possibly damaged speaker before messing around in the hidden settings. See if you can find an audio app that will give you a wider adjustment range for your system volume and gain.,

Thank you for the reply.
If you go into the service menu, the go into the low frequency test. At 100hz and 200 hz there is a little bit of buzz in the headset reciever unless you really push it against your face (which i assume kind of tightens the spaces in the plastic and prevents whatever vibration in the speaker is occuring).
Hmm.. the vibration is akin to as if you were speaking into some cellophane wrap; like some film (maybe for waterproofing) is covering the speaker.
Oh. It's also worth noting that I cannot replicate the issue on Skype or Viber. Those sound crystal clear.
Bump. Anyone?
I just got the sg7 edge and tried to play some music (without headphones) but it sounded horrible. It sounded like the whole phone was rattling and I thought it might have something to do with the case but it continued after I removed the case. I tried adjusting different settings, bass, volume, ect but nothing seemed to help. Is this common and is there anything I can do besides get an external speaker?
The sound quality is lacking for sure, and to my understanding this is due to waterproofing. I also noticed my phone has a deep vibration when using it as a phone, whether coming through the speaker or through the receiver when held against your ear. Again, it was told to me by Samsung that this is normal and due to the waterproofing measures. Could be BS, but that's what they told me. Have talked to a few friends that have the S7E and theirs does it as well. And it's noted in a lot of reviews of the phone (and also said to be due to waterproofing) so I assume it's normal. Speakers or headphones are the way to go with it.
It like all the audio inputs/outputs on this phone are just terrible, The mic is really low quality and the playback from it is really low almost inaudible at normal volume. The speaker also sounds really distorted and bad even the headphone jack is low quality though turning on Hi-Fi audio from the settings seemed to slightly improve it.
I'll soon try a USB-C headphone and report the results.
I would have to disagree. I've been using this phone for about a month or so. It's not better or worse than the Note 8 that it replaced.
It's working fine to me, even ear speaker it's loud to me.
I have the same problem, even with the maximum volume on call, you can't hear well
I have to disagree with this one. I have nothing but good experience with its audio.
Everything is good on my side. Maybe you bought a defective unit.

Hello,
Any news on this? I got a Mi 9 Lite and it sounds so broken. I only got the Speaker problem but I kinda fixed it with a 3rd party equalizer. I thought that maybe with a factory reset it gets fixed but it's a hassle.
Did you do a factory reset? What's your story?

USB C headphone would be irrelevant in your case since the processing would be done by external DAC and not the phone's DAC.
Yes you are right. I mean, I fixed it with an app called equalizer FX but it's annoying that I have to have another app running in the background all the time for something that obvious. I messaged the MI team inside the settings and hopefully one day they will reach to me.
Disagree. The Audio Quality is very decent, especially through 3.5 mm jack when Hi-Fi Audio mode enabled. Yeah when not enabled, it sounds a bit thin and lack of driving power, but when enabled the audio sounds more amplified and layering improved.
