One Plus 5 support timeframe - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

This is probably a noob question, but how long does One Plus keep pushing out updates for their devices ? I have always had Google devices and it's been generally 2 years for versions, and 3 years for total updates. Considering getting a One Plus, just wondering how often updates are pushed. It looks like the One Plus 3T got an update before the One Plus 5 ?

When do you think we will get updated to M?

How long do you think we will need to wait?
Next year probably knowing Samsung. They support their flagships for about 6 months before they're completely forgotten about.
They're still rolling out 5.0 to some of their devices. The problem with Samsung is just last year they released 56 different mobile/tablet devices - How do you continue support for all of those?
It's the one thing I love about Apple - One device for the whole world, one device to update, nice and simple!
Agreed, and I am aware of their track record. I have seen a new urgency to get updates done quickly however, and given this will be their newest device I am hoping the ups are will drop quickly.
after the s7 comes out prob

Will the update situation be better this time?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently still on my beloved Nexus 5 but it's slowly dying. As Google gone off the deep-end into Apple price territory, I was considering the OnePlus. Especially because I heard the update situation is better. But then I read about the OnePlus 2, which was barely supported for a year.
Is there any reason to hope that the whole situation is much better this time around? Will we get 2 years of updates? And will those updates arrive speedy?
I hope it's not too much of a shameless plug, but I compiled a list of devices and their update times, to get a better overview of how different maintainers support their devices. So far I only added Google & OnePlus but I'm considering Motorola next, as they also have rather good update support:

Oreo update

Hi,
So finally Moto has decided that there will be an Oreo update for G4 plus. But they have ignored G4 non-plus version. This is really pathetic on their part. The phone was released in May 2016 only and the company is pulling the plug after a mere 1 and a half years. There is not much difference between the phones so that is any I selected the non-plus version. Is there a way to contact their management or the concerned department so that we can have our voices heard? Any petition going on about the same?
Thanks

Don't expect too much from them. We could rely on custom ROMS.. just be patient.. at least one oreo ROM should be here
Yes ROM's will be there but I don't think that I will get time to flash as schedule is way too busy nowadays. I am not able to find time to even backup data from my phone so flashing is a big no, OTA yes.
so i guess no ports, right? :/
Oreo port
Well, couldn't someone port the g4 official Oreo update to g4? As said previously, the phones are practically identical. Should eb no problem to sideload the g4 plus update on the g4.
moto g4 and g4 plus are athene version, they are the same build, so it will work on both

Exactly. So, just grab the update zip from g4 plus, flash it on your g4, and you have Oreo. Yay.
There are some hardware differences on the two phones so the update may not work, so don't just grab a zip and think it will solve the trick. Depending on what Lenovo (the owners of Moto) do in their code it might be an easy or hard port depending on what they do. Also nobody has come up with a way to root and install anything once we got Nougat n these mid range phones so I am not as hopeful there is a developer still working on this phone. If you want Oreo (trust me I'm debating too) we may need to upgrade to a newer phone than a 2 year old one when Oreo does come out for G4+. The companies have built in the obsolescence on these phones after 2 years. So they can continue to make profit by not offering upgrades on every device; even Apple doesn't think about the 3 and 4 series anymore in their IOS roll-outs and slows it down on them. So we might need to save the pennies and look deals come out in November.

Google Pixel: 2 years later

It's been 2 years since Google Pixel (XL) was released.
Unfortunately, this means no more major releases for these phones.
I hope the community would still be able to create some porting of next versions of Android, because the OG Pixel still rocks nowadays.
Too bad that a powerful phone like this one will only get security patches for only one year from now.
I still hope they give us 9.1
"No guaranteed Android version updates after" does not mean that there is no chance, if next Android versions don't require to much tinkering to be ported to the Pixel I think they will do it.

I was thinking the same thing about "guaranteed." I found no compelling reason to move to Pixel 2. I still see nothing in Pixel 3 that makes me want to spend the money especially to guarantee bootloader unlock.

I second that. Pixel is still kicking.
What's with the Treble thing? Do you think we could get future versions ported easily?
I purchased a Pixel second hand off eBay about 2 months ago, switch from a Samsung Galaxy S6 Active and I can say without a doubt. It out does the Galaxy without a problem. Though I miss the heartbeat monitor. It is sad to see that this powerful phone doesn't have any more Android version updates anymore but the community probably will be updating it more and more. My favorite thing about this phone I have to say is just the usability and ease or finding everything where it makes sense to find.
Keyword is "minimum" at the top. Google like Samsung and many other makers are only obligated to provide support for two years. That is all they are saying. Also, with Google having the Pixel /XL on Android P, do you really they will drop support with only a few makers with Pie? Other makers say only two year support. Most phone like this one has gotten two major Android os updates. Since this also is their first in house phone with full Google logo inside and out, I highly doubtful they will just drop support. Why even put out Android P on the pixel? They could stuck at 8.1 and not updated to P. They are keeping their phones out there viable. With most their testing of new OS on their in house phones, and it being HTC, which they now own half of, no way do I see them dropping support. Especially how close all three versions are. A few different drivers per phone, but highly used chipsets across the board. The Sailfish and Marlin still have more development than say Samsung flagships, lg flagships, and any other phones out there. Go look threw XDA. I got tired of waiting for root again on the s8 I sold that pos and got a pixel and pixel 2 xl. These phones are far from done. This pixel rooted on stock kernel still kills my old s8. Quad core vs octo core. Pixel quad smashes it.

You can always install a Custom Rom like Lineage OS to get the newest Android when Google stops updating the phone...

Oh for sure. Lineageos rocks. Got that on old s5. Oreo on a s5. Unreal. A lot of extra features. Really got that phone for a house phone now and works great.
is possible that they will do the 'same' thing? I mean, they give new update to 'slow down' the old devices, so the current user will feel need to upgrade
even they do, we still have custom rom, which always want make our device running more fast, rite?

Until we stop actually getting updates, I wouldn't worry about it. And we'll probably know before hand when that will be. Plus with Pixel 3 out we're going to get some of the software, whether Google wants us to have it or not. Night Shot with the Pixel 3 camera on my original Pixel.
November updates have been released, and..... no updates for sailfish and marlin.

I doubt that. Probably an issue with the update for us.
Still rocking my OG pixel but tomorrow I am getting a battery replacement. Phone works great but watching the battery level is like watching the gas gauge on a race car... no desire to upgrade as everything else works great.

Until they announce they do drop sailfish Pixel, I won't worry.
Google confirms it's still working on the November update for 2016 Pixels
I have Nexus 5x with 4gigs of RAM as my second phone and it was officially updated up to 8.1. And also it is quite suitable for the pixel2 ROM port with almost all the features working without any problems. I don't see why Pixel 1 can be less capable to be updated in future at least two android versions up
This phone is amazing still now we have offical night shot I am do happy

Google pixel XL next version of Android

what are the chances used Google pixel will support next version of Android Q. right now Google only has two phones to support it pixel 2, 3. so I think they will include pixel XL why you guys think
No, no major updates will be delivered to 1st Gen. Only security updates till October 2019, maybe a few months more.
Google can change their mind. Even lower and devices are easily able to run Android p
Just it never happened before, so chances are quite low. The support for major updates ended this October with Pie
But we can install third party roms
Kinda annoying on googles part.. I think buying a 1000+ dollar pixel phone should come with more than 2 years of updates... Should be 3 to 5!
It's not as if the hardware can't support it.. as the awesome XDA community will undoubtedly prove!
True but I have a feeling Google will add one more year of support for pixel 1 if not then there are wonderful roms to be side load . Though I have never did this I hope it's safe and will perform good
