Without the unlock tool being released I've gotten bored of this phone in the 1st week. I've bought another 2 phones since that have more enjoyment value to them being able to unlock and flash as I want. The thrill of finding exciting new roms that have new ideas baked in and running, sometimes weirdly, but always fun to play with...
Nokia have provided a good solid phone for cheap.
That's not what we here at XDA always want...
Where's the fun of trying a new rom, the thrill of seeing a new bootlogo, being able to set things up how we want, not some guy who has no imagination sitting in an office somewhere.
This will be my last Nokia unless they get this right with newer models...
This turkeys going the way of the Zenfone 3 deluxe who's bootloader unlock wasn't released until well after a new batch of upgraded phones was released from their competitors at a cheaper price nicely killing off all developement....

It's a shame all right I agree. I assumed we'd have an open device from the off. Instead it's mainly silence from Nokia.
They have to release the sources yet so maybe we'll know more about the bootloader unlock when that happens.
I need my twrp and adaway . Dns66 isn't cutting it.
I had a Moto e 2015 previously which still has huge ongoing custom ROM support. Tis weird coming to this wasteland.

Is there going to be some 3rd party developers working on the OS to produce custom ROMs, kernels and things like that? Only thing holding me back is the lack of customization in the OS, I thought that it would have a lot more by default. I know that the OS can't do much on the specs its running like widgets and stuff. But the main features I want are things like overclocking, including the GPU possibly. I just want the customization that is available in even the standard android, ability to disable and uninstall built in apps amongst other things.
So if there are developers that are going to be working on stuff like this for Firefox OS, please post here so I know whether or not its worth getting a ZTE One.
I purchased the ZTE Open, and was one of the first few to purchase. Ill be looking into custom builds when it arrives and seeing what we can do with the source. I am sure others will be looking at doing the same as well. Lets hope we can get a forum open for the device if enough people ask for it.
I almost ordered it a couple of hours ago from the eBay store, but after playing around with the stock Firefox OS emulator, its not enough for me to warrant it, even with the ridiculously low price. And my original aim of getting the device was to be able to truly open up a phones software without worrying about breaking my expensive device. Lets hope there are a lot more people who want some stuff for this phone.
Also the Alcatel firefox phone has pretty much identical internals so any kind of ROMs or kernels can be ported with little work.
I plan to use the phone as a temp waiting for a new device to be released on T-mobile, preferable a newer Nexus phone. Would have gotten a N4, but I figured a refresh will be coming around shortly. So this gives me some time to mess around with Mozilla's offerings for a while and get a taste. If it messes up, I can fall back to my S3.
Cool, I'll still be using my Lumia 920 as my main phone but this will be kept as a backup, and I will hopefully be upgrading as well, probably to one of the new phablets being released this year
I will be creating a repository of root methods and guides, recoveries, roms and stock files. This will be a one stop shop for all your developer needs.
So far the only development. Is by Janjan, providing root, and a twrp recovery

considering all development for this device, from the only dev that ever worked on it, has stopped. I regret buying this device. I thought for sure Sony would have better action than this. I had a note 2 before this, and they were still developing for that phone when I stopped using it 2 months Ago. I think im going to try to sell it. it's really pathetic. but it is what it is

I just bought this coming from a Nexus 6P and was surprised that nothing had really been done with it it seems to be a good phone, just some of the stock options suck lol. I saw your thread for root and custom recovery and am going to try it I'm the next couple days.
You said you are going to be porting some Roms over, any ideas which you will be attempting? If you are taking requests I wouldn't mind Pure Nexus.. It's pretty kickass from a well known dev.. Or maybe even crdroid (lineage based)? Thanks for your work so far and keep at it.. Like I said, pretty good phone, just no development much yet.

The option for root and recovery is done by JanJan who has stopped working on this device. Please give him a thanks and your credit. Mid level phones have a habit of taking a few months to really get development going. But this phone should have plenty in the coming months!
I'd like to jump in for kernel and recovery development, but the problem is I don't have experience and I have to setup a dedicated Linux machine from one of unused laptop. Also, I have to work like everybody. I have four Xperia (Z Ultra, XA Ultra, XA1 Ultra, and L1). I just need other developers to help me get started.
Note: I only have US version except Z Ultra (C6833).

I did the mistake.. Usually I do my own research by google-ing all the reviews
Then I read some opinions, then i look also on you tube and then the most important
I do look at xda forum to see the support of the device
And i saw all that...but than I saw the forum is not like I am used to..its like dead .. not
just there are no one posting things..but the custom rom support is not there...
Well, I said to me also... ok its a 6 inch.. not everybody likes phablets..
Like, 5 inch is more popular.. maybe that is the reson there are no development..

As It looks like all the X series from the Sony Xperia... has no support..
Like there are 7 or 8 devices from the X series and the only one is the X Performance Model wich has like 4 to 5 custom roms
and a few stock modified kernels..
All the other phones do not have anything..
Or let me say the best example the XA Ultra also 6 inch from last year 2016 Model

i bought the regular xa1 thinking that there'd be insane development going on for it. looking back, i shouldn't have unlocked bootloader, and looked at getting different phone. if i try to take it back to the store now even though it's under 1 year warranty, they'll just say, "oh we can't replace it, we got to send it off to sony" in which case they won't do anything as sony will see that the bootloader is unlocked
Not to say custom ROMs aren't great and all, I too was here for the good stuff, but people complaining and taking phones back is a bit dramatic.
The stock ROM is great. It doesn't really need a custom ROM. It's a perfectly reasonable phone by itself.
A custom ROM makes sense in phones such as Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi, where they botch everything to make it "unique", but Sony phones tread the line carefully to keep it pure as possible whilst adding actual useful features.
If you're picking up phones just to hack them, maybe you should try to start your own development on them. Get the toolchains, bring up a Linux system and get creative. Then you can be the hero of your own story.
What is the best way to return to fully stock? Relock the bootloader and flash the latest firmware? Might sell mine too and get an Essential PH-1.
So since this is my first Sony device and may be my last for a few reasons question I want to return everything to stock, and I use the method that was provided it won't relock bootloader right? I have to manually relock it like any other device? I just wanna return to stock so I can try and see what it take to get a Oreo rom once the update comes through.
Actually maybe do some research when this phone first came out with had start of support. We have twrp and custom kernel. There's a search button. Try it out.

I've been reading the various rooting threads for a couple of days and overall the process seems pretty complicated with many different Nokia 6 versions, and different tools to use, etc.
Is there a way to get root with just the stock bootloader? I only want to do a few sudo operations once in a while, not flash any ROMs. Is this possible somehow? I'm using TA-1003 with 8.0.0 + April security update.

Your best bet is to return the phone. Nokia has made a really, really bad bet by locking the boot loader. I think that by getting burnt by windows, they decided to jump back into the frying pan again. They don't understand what "OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE" is. If they had a clue, they would not lock the boot loader. I returned mine because there will not be any active development or roms. I wanted the phone so I could root it, like you, and then unlock the sound features from the sound chip. So, don't bother rooting the phone, just return it or keep it stock.
In a year or two, Nokia will flop or get the idea that they want active development so people will buy their phones. It is a bad way to enter the market.
In principle I agree but I've used the phone for almost a year lol and sadly the power user community is really very small and so there's not much motivation for Nokia to make open phones. This seems especially true to me, since they're offering the phone as an Amazon prime adware phone, for example, so there is in fact a motivation to not open the phone, since it might let users remove the adware from their subsidized hardware... It has been a very long time since I have worked on a phone project, mostly been working on switch and ps4 exploits. I'm not up to date on all the latest phone stuff.
My last exploit and the only one I released publicly, was for the Grand Prime (Cricket variant). Just like last time (I hope) I can get access to the diagnostic flash files and used them to create a modified boot. Also just like last time, I will not release the diag files to the general public if I get them because they can be used for nefarious deeds (They can be used to fully remove frp from a device among other things) and they are proprietary. Not to mention someone could really screw their phone up messing with things. The only thing it doesnt do is unlock the bootloader.
My question is, since im so far out of date and only started doing research, is it even feasible since (at this time) it cannot be used to unlock the BL?

I already did that just waiting for something to come along, what ever happened to this being a place where people go to look at new ideas and discuss. Sure there's only a paid way right now, but might not always be that way....because people work together and come up with other ways. If the world gave up like you did Trump would be president in the USA.....oh wait
And the phone i rooted was deemed impossible by many because how locked down cricket keeps their phones and how locked down samsung keeps their devices.
But you also missed the point, I'm not looking to unlock the bootloader, I'm looking for exploits to allow root without unlocking the bootloader. And before you say it can't be done, your wrong. The impossible is only impossible until it becomes possible.

There's one guy on here who does it. Search around and you will find him (look up). I costs about 100-150 depending on model. I have the N986U1 it was 125.

I doubt that. There are many public tools you can use like z3x to gain full access to a device and write the required token, they just cost money for the hardware and software. They also require hardware keys that need to be renewed every 6 or 12 months and live in the grey area of the law. I know of one vendor who let's you use a VPN to appear in their service region (hk only) just because of covid, but once the lockdowns end they say the VPN access will also go away...odds are thats when he won't be able to do them anymore

Would like to point out that Shift phone has just released there new phone 6mq with changeable battery, Jack stick and Micro SD card! The 3 main things a mobile NEED to even be interesting to look at.
I have now rooted the Shift 6mq phone with Magisk and we have a dirty TWRP working as well, although still having issues on the later but it is in its beginning stages of this phone. SHIFT6mq - Bootloader unlock / Root / Custom Recoveries / ROMs | SHIFTPHONES
Would anyone be willing to look at the Shift 6mq so we can further support this little German company who goes against the stream of nonsense, it has Android 10 out of the box, they are still working on a Google version and a Light version so you have the choice.
But it is looking good, finally a contender to the old LG V20 - which I have had for my daily driver for 4-5 years or so. A wonderful phone although getting old and it had its shortcomings as well, like the screen Ghosting and not easy to root if even possible.
The LG V20 was the last flagship phone with the 3 essentials - and now we FINALY have something to take over from here!
Would love to see the community support this new mobile and help these guys out, I have toyed and tinkered around with it - and it is possible to pretty much ruin it and get it up and running again although a lot of hooping around, but it can be done already.
So if anyone have the know how, or interest to support a little company who at least stands on some sanity with there phone - it would be nice to see LineageOS support for it.
I don't know much about stuff like that, I just do some newbie rooting and such at the moment, having had to root my new used V20 F800K that already sadly does ghosting. And my new Shift 6mq which I got 10 days after my V20 F800K rescue boat came around to relieve my old V20 H990N Hongkong version as it was and is falling apart. I did not know when I would receive my Shift 6mq but it came around 10 days after I got the new used Korean version of the LG V20. Anyway at least it could be rooted, so that will help me get all my applications over to the new Shift 6mq, which is another milestone that needs to be walked.
Anyway, if any programmers are out there, or people who knows stuff, it would be a nice project for some sanity to support this new phone from Shift, seemingly a good replacement for the old LG V20. I still need to get it up and running and see how it works in daily use, but it looks like it will be a good phone for the next 5 years for me.
Not a surprise it is faster then the LG V20, benchmark shows a good leap - 128 GB of internal space although the system itself is 21 GB compared to 9 GB on the LG V20 which had 64 GB. 8 GB of Ram, although not sure what I need that much for, but I could not live without more internal space as I am always using it so quick on the LG V20, books, maps and such takes a lot of space and what not. One of the reasons I disqualified the Fairphone 3 when looking at both phones, only having 64GB of internal memory, is just not going to do it for me. I actually ended up just ordering another LG V20 but because of corona nonsense they would not send it to me, being much cheaper solution. And needing a new phone, I had to then go with the Shift 6mq which was 5-6 times as much compared to the 4-5 year old LG V20. Anyway, if a phone does not have the 3 essentials, I won't buy it, not interested!
Anyway...
So guys, anyone up for looking at it? If you need any help I am here. I have toyed around with it, and breaking it, I can get it up and running again. I've done it a couple of times now... And still doing some testing on TWRP which seems to have a failing bug that I need to report.
But in any case, would love to see anyone starting working on it.

You did a great thing by using a phone for over 4 years. These are why companies are making better phones with long term support - if you can replace the battery or screen for cheap, and your carrier doesn't offer you a "deal" on a new phone, why would you want one?
Now me on the other hand, in 6 years I've daily driven 5 phones and 8 versions of Android, including 4 custom ROMs.
HOWEVER, I did it sustainably - using only phones given to me for free with the exception of the Moto G and a used S10e.
