Essential phone VOLTE with Verizon - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

After the so called Verizon certification was announced yesterday I noticed a couple of things:
1. LTE+ icon is gone and now I only see LTE. It doesn't really bother me because LTE+ seemed to be slower anyway but can't help not notice.
2. Now this is a big issue for me: can't get volte work anymore. Tried a bunch of tricks with no luck: airplane mode on then off. The 3646 service menu with disabling then enabling volte flag. No luck.
Is anyone seeing the same behavior? Any workaround? My account is provisioned with volte and worked just fine until a few days ago.
I really want to like this phone but my patience is running thin with issue after issue.

My volte doesn't work either

Are you sure that your VoLTE was actually working before? Mine showed the LTE+ logo also but when I would made a call I had no internet service while on the call. Pretty sure it was never actually working, it just looked like it was.

VoLTE working fine here. Couple of things, make sure advanced calling is added on your line. Then set preferred network to global and enhanced 4g Lte mode is on.

Yea mine goes out of lte and lte plus when I make a call whether on global or any other setting

I have advanced calling turned on, enhanced LTE is checked and I have it on global....been that way since day one. It shows LTE+ but soon as I make a call all data drops out.

When I turn on enhanced 4g/lte mode I can't make phone calls. I get a server error. When off I can make calls but no data while in the call.
Fixed it! Like someone else mentioned. I needed to enable HD voice with Verizon. I used the "my Verizon" app and went to account add one. Once I enabled the HD voice add on then I went to phone settings and turned on enhanced mode. Now I can make calls and surf the net at the same time.

I had Voice/Data working simultaneously since Day 1 (Sept. 1) and as of 2 days ago it stop. I've changed nothing and didn't install any new apps. HD voice is active and I have Global set. Did the Verizon Certification screw things up??

Same here. I popped the SIM into my old Pixel for testing and volte works just fine. It has to be something with the Essential (and certification on Verizon). I suspect that, before certification and assuming that volte was already enabled, Verizon would just mark the phone as "unknown" and leave the settings alone to whatever they were before. After the "certification" went through, they actually acknowledge it is an Essential phone and disabled volte.

The certification didn't seem to affect me. I've enabled and disabled advanced calling on my line to make sure it does indeed work. The best I can recommend is to call and make sure advanced calling is enabled on your line specifically. I've read people say they screwed up and enabled it on another line on the same account. I wouldn't put it past them to screw that up for you.

By advance calling, you mean HD Voice add on right?

Yes and no lol. See my screenshot. The feature is called advanced calling 1.0 and it activates HD voice. Confusing I know lol.
Then just make sure you have enhanced 4g Lte enabled on the phone and Preferred Network set to Global and reboot if you needed to change any of those settings.

Can you put the whole syntax of the 3646 code for service menu?

I was told that adding HD voice to my plan was the same as Activating Advance Calling 1.0 by Verizon. I still dont have simultaneous Data/Voice. :crying:

Interesting when I log into Verizon I do not see Advanced Calling 1.0 anywhere. I have the option to add either premium or free apps, HD Voice is under free apps and allows me to activate for all my lines.
I have two PH-1 in my house, I can say that neither phone supported VoLTE until I activated the feature on Verizon first, even though they both had VoLTE and Advanced Calling Selected. (Strangely, on one phone but not the other, I would get the server error and unable to make calls when enhanced calling was selected on the phone until I activated HD Voice)
Looking at the details during calls, for voice it was always 1xRTT and LTE was not available. After Verizon's certification and activating HD Voice (this took about 15 minutes and I got a text telling me features were added) followed by a reboot, VoLTE works. Under Setting - About Phone - Status - SIM Status, with HD Voice the Signal Strength is much better when calling and LTE remains in service during the call and phone never switches to 1xRTT.

Yes, these have been on for over 2 weeks. I've turned them off, restarted my phone, then back on with no luck. I've removed and added back hd voice, restarted, no luck. What gives! (I attached screen shots of my setting and my LTE discovery during a call.)

VoLTE on Nexus 6 from Verizon

I went here , clicked on "Free Products", and found that my Nexus 6 was eligible for HD Voice. I signed up, checked out (for free), and it said that my phone now has HD Voice. The FAQ explains how to verify that it's actually working, as follows:
To verify Advanced Calling 1.0 is ready to use on an Android phone:
Open the Contacts app.
Tap on the Groups tab.
If you see a group named "Video Calling," this indicates that Advanced Calling 1.0 is ready for use.
Note: If you don't see the Video Calling group, turn off your phone and turn it back on again. If you still don't see it, verify that the latest software is installed on your phone.

My phone didn't pass that test, but I don't know if that's because I'm rooted. Or whether I'm confusing "HD Voice" with "Advanced Calling" which maybe I am. Kind of confusing.
I just tried this and was unable to send or receive calls. Kept getting all circuits are busy until I took it off my account.

Yea I'm sure volte isn't enabled for the n6 right now on any network.

There needs to be a software update to our phones to make it work. now that vz is for sure getting the phone we should have a way to do that soon.

Right, but it's confusing that the Nexus 6 is identified as "eligible" for HD Voice, given that HD Voice is part of Advanced Calling, which is Verizon's name for VoLTE. But I suppose it's not remarkable that there is misleading and confusing information on Verizon's website.

That's what I mean when I say the Verizon site is confusing. Here's what the FAQ says:
What is Advanced Calling?
Advanced Calling 1.0 is a first generation suite of services enabled by VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology. VoLTE is a new technology platform that delivers voice calls over the 4G LTE network instead of the traditional voice network.
The benefits of Advanced Calling 1.0 include:HD Voice
1-way or 2-way video calls* (including support for video calls over Wi-Fi)
6-way conference calls
What is HD Voice?
HD Voice delivers clearer, natural-sounding audio when both parties are using HD Voice-enabled phones that are connected to our 4G LTE network.
Reading that, and seeing that my phone was "eligible" for HD Voice, made me think that maybe VoLTE was being rolled out for the Nexus 6. Obviously it wasn't, but you can see the source of the confusion.

ah, i see. it is a little confusing how they set it up. seems like they have hd calling on their volte enabled line. tmibile does it on their non volte enabled lines. but both caller and reciever have to have hd calling for it to work.

My understanding is that the Nexuz 6, while it will support Advanced Calling (VoLTE), it will only support HD Voice and not HD Video - just like the iPhone 6/6 Plus. So that test is actually moot.

Source?
I just added this feature to my account and nothing happened. Calls still work and the "LTE" label still disappears from above the signal icon (meaning the data connection is still going away during calls, and therefor VoLTE isn't working).
It can't be a coincidence that Verizon sees the N6 as compatible. My wife's Verizon Note 4 comes up as not compatible, for example. So, they must be enabling certain models on purpose and they enabled the N6.
My assumption is that there will be a software update to enable this on the N6 by default at some point before the phone launches on Verizon. However, maybe there is a way to manually enable it now? Does anyone know of any dialer codes or settings that relate to VoLTE? Is VoLTE working on any other carrier?

no other carrier has it yet, and verizon just started rolling it out(and most likely its not in your area yet).
I have a question.... When Verizon do release the update to initiate VOLTE for this phone will someone be able extract for us non Verizon nexus 6 owners to download it? Advanced calling is initiated on my account because I had the g3 so I'm hoping we can get the update when its released.

Not possible.
Google is adding in the standardized backend interface to have VoLTE working, but I am pretty much going to assume that it will be implemented carrier by carrier basis since there is also going to need to be changes to how towers/carriers hand off the protocol.

Pretty sure he meant would it be possible to add it to a non-Verizon purchased Nexus running on Verizon's network. Not to port Verizon's VoLTE to another carrier.
That being said, it's pretty much impossible to answer until we know how Verizon implements this. If I had to guess I would say it could be added to the /oem partition similar to AT&T's stuff. Either way, I would say it's pretty likely it would be added to any device running with a Verizon sim.
We all need to remember that Volte is only available in a few cities yet
Just for giggles I added the Advanced Calling to my cart. (I didn't check out).. I noticed that it was going to remove ringback tones if I proceeded. Weird.

Do you have a source for that? You could very well be right, but from reading verizon's website, it sounded like it was supposed to work anywhere with lte coverage.

It is LTE and phone compatibility dependent, not area. Unless your area does not have LTE.
I would imagine once 5.1 hits we will have volte/advanced calling on verizon. However none of this will work until verizon officially activates and allows this phone on their network as more than an unrecognized device. Like others have said though google still has some backend work to do to make it possible on their end as well.

1) Check to make sure your APN protocol is set to IPv6.
2) Make sure you've selected "Enchanced 4G LTE Mode" under Cellular network settings.
3) Open the dialer and press *#*#4636*#*# to access the hidden phone settings menu. Make sure that it reads "TURN OFF VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG" (as this will mean that it's currently active.)
4) Beyond that I'd call Verizon and ask to speak to a technical support expert.
You have to call Verizon to turn on the HD calling. It's a feature that let's you do what you asked. Been there, done it.

AT&T & Verizon VoLTE and VoWiFi calling/texting thread

Hi all. Posting this for users looking for answers on VoLTE and WoWifi on the 6T on AT&T & Verizon. If users with access to the OP6T could please test and report, that would be very helpful. Since the pixel 3 now supports both VoLTE & VoWiFi (on AT&T) there is perhaps some hope that OnePlus will also support it.
1: On AT&T, is there an option for Voice over LTE and Wifi calling and does it work?
2: On Verizon, I know Voice over LTE will work, but what about Wifi Calling?
Screen shots welcome I will have my hands on the device as soon as its available and will report since I have all the carriers, but thought maybe someone might get their hands on one early and could report. It might make a big difference on whether or now some users buy the device.! Thanks guys!
Yeah, whether or not I get the OP6T depends entirely on whether VoLTE and VoWiFi work on AT&T.
Eagerly waiting for updates!

AT&T & Verizon VoLTE and VoWiFi calling/texting thread
Same here. I’ve got a spot in SC where I got for holidays annually where, without Wi-Fi calling, my phone is a paperweight. I’ve always wanted to try a OnePlus but if there’s no Wi-Fi calling I’ll have to pass and stick with my XS Max.
I’ve already ordered but it’ll be a quick turnaround if that doesn’t work.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This question came up in the AMA with the OP team in their community forums last week, and Pei himself said VoWifi isn't supported at the moment.
Just got my device today so update time..
1: VoLTE works on Verizon by default as soon as you pop in the SIM. All the Verizon LTE bands seem to work fine.. in this area, 2,4,13, & 66. no option in the menu for wiFi calling, even though it works fine in my pixel 3 where my verizon SIM just was.
2: Neither VoLTE or VoWiFI work on AT&T by default. No option for either in the settings at all. So no change there from OP5/5T/6 ETC. However, if you go do the dialer, dial *#800# and hit enter, select oneplus logkit, scroll down to function switch and select it, and check the box for VoLTE switch and Vowifi switch and then reboot, it puts the VOLTE setting and VoWiFI setting in for both the Verizon and AT&T SIM. and while you can enable VoWIFI on both Verizon and AT&T, it DOES NOT work on either. On AT&T however, as long as you have a VOLTE capable/recognized IMEI on your AT&T account for your line, VoLTE/HD voice work just fine.
So, while it is amazing to have, for the first time ever a DUAL SIM phone that supports both VZW & AT&T at the same time, it is a too bad that VoWiFI does not work on either, Especially now that the Pixel 3 Supports it on both carriers.

Has anyone used the dialer code *#*#4636#*#* & try to toggle VoLTE &/OR VoWI-FI ?
Thanks for the info. I'm looking to get the 6T to use on AT&T. I've never used an unlocked/non-AT&T branded phone on my line. Are there any other limitations that AT&T implements on non-AT&T branded devices? Do they throttle data speeds? Any issues with SMS/MMS working like some Verizon users are experiencing? Would I need to contact AT&T to have any special provisioning just to get it to work? I appreciate any insight on this.

I'm not on AT&T so,I'm not gonna speculate.
Perhaps someone will chime-in soon for more definitive information.
My OnePlus 6t came in today. Took sim out of my Pixel 3 XL and popped it in. Everything is working except I can't SEND text messages. I can receive them and make calls, data is fine (actually amazing 44.5 mbps d/l, which is good for around here.)
I've tried chatting with Verizon, but after I told them what device, there was a long pause and then she asked if it was an iPhone
Here are my troubleshooting steps I've followed.
-deleted app cache and storage
-reset device
-factory reset device
-cleared cache partition in recovery
Any suggestions? I put the sim back in my Pixel and all the messages came through. I've tried both slots.

I have used AT&T for years on unlocked devices. I have tested everything Data speeds are just fine. no issues there. the OP6T supports all the bands on AT&T so coverage should be just fine for you. The limits are as follows:
1: built in visual voicemail will not work, you will need to use the AT&T visual Voicemail app from the store.
2: Wifi calling/texting will not work
3: VoLTE/HD Voice will only work with the above mentioned trickery. Root is NOT needed. just the *#800# thing
the only provisioning you may need is the AT&T imei for VoLTE (Easiest to do online) after installing your AT&T SIM in the OP6T, if VoLTE doesn't work after following the instruction in this thread, log into your AT&T account and update your IMEI to one of your past AT&T phones that support VoLTE and update, reboot you OP6T and bingo, it will work. No other provisioning or limitations that I know of. And if VoLTE/HD Voice isn't important to you, you can ignore all this. Your existing AT&T SIM just needs installed in your OP6T and your good to go!

The *#800# enables all those options. But it doesn't help anything on Verizon, and on AT&T it does work for VoLTE if a VOLTE enabled IMEI is on your AT&T account, but it doesn't work for wifi calling. I wish it was just illegal for the carriers to block services just because its a non branded phone

So glad that I found this post. I am coming from an AT&T branded Galaxy S8 to my new OnePlus 6T. The above instructions worked like a charm for AT&T. I ran some tests. The OnePlus displays "HD" when I call my wife on her phone on AT&T and VoLTE shows in the status bar. When I toggle it back off I lose "HD" on the phone call screen. Also, LTE stays on during calls with VoLTE turned on and I ran a speedtest with it on and off and I definitely get 4G speed with it on and it downgrades to HSPA+ with VoLTE off and speed goes way down. Hopefully VoWIFI will be supported soon but that's not a deal breaker for me as I get great reception most of the time where I live, work and travel.

I am on att had it all working on my unlocked NOTE 8. Now I can't even get volte cause it's all grayed out.
The service providers don't want you to buy unlocked phones. They make zero on them!! So that's why they block stuff. It's an antitrust lawsuit waiting to happen!! A$$h0!€$

I've got AT&T as my primary and Verizon as #2. I just got off the phone with Verizon, told them I needed to add the CDMA Less feature to fix my texting. He checked a box on his end and I got a flood of texts in...what was even better, it was a work phone on a business account. I didn't even have to provide any real information to him and he was able to fix me up. He was aware of the issue though, he'd asked if it was a 6T from T-Mobile...so someone sent out a bulletin somewhere that he had read.
Anyway, I left Verizon to go to AT&T specifically for this plan of having one phone to cover 2 lines while one being fully functional (AT&T), so far it's been working well switching between SIMs for texting and making phone calls.
What were you specifically looking to find out?
Edit: found what you're looking for...however I'm not sure where those settings are even at.

VOLTE Wifi Calling with Unlocked S10+

Hey there, I've been doing a bit of research but it has been a long while since i have done any flashing of firmware etc. I received my s10+ device today. Model number is SM-G975UZKAXAA. I am a Verizon wireless customer. When I placed this device on my account I noticed I have no access to Voice over LTE, and I also do not have any access to Wifi Calling. My question is the following. I read somewhere a couple of weeks ago that if I wanted something like this I would need to flash the original VZW Firmware which would have all the lovely bloatware etc on the device. Is there any way I can do that? I have seen firmware that has been posted but I dont seem to see anything that specifically is the VZW apps etc which should (hopefully allow VOLTE and Wifi Calling and maybe even HD Calling, if thats a thing)
I would appreciate any info anyone can provide me on this, as the only solution I can see at the moment is to return the device and start over with a VZW specific device.
Cheers~
Likewise but with a T-Mobile firmware for me
Unlocked US version here with Verizon and wifi calling and volte working out of the box.
You may want to call Verizon to see if they need to provision it for your account.

Hey guys, just wanted to check in with you (or anyone else who has wifi calling on unlocked Verizon). It is 100% working? It's the only reason I got the carrier version. Should I cancel and order the unlocked?

Yes, it works with my unlocked S10+ on Verizon. It surprised the heck out of me as I too have the unlocked Note9, but no wifi calling.
What about on AT&T? Can anyone say if they can at least get VOLTE? WiFi calling would be the icing on the cake. Thank you

Wifi calling worked on my unlocked S10 out of the box on T-Mobile. I'll try and check on VoLTE later but I get **** reception near work.
Can you explain how you enabled WiFi calling on unlocked version, on Verizon? I can't find a way to do it. What about HD Voice? My real problem is that data does not work while on a call, using my unlocked, on Verizon. Is there a way to get that working?
I have unlocked S10+ on VZW. I get LTE+ which is VoLTE, data works while on a call.

Unlocked S10e on T-Mobile. WiFi Calling, VoLTE and band 12 are working. There is no setting for VoLTE, but it works

I don't think that is right. LTE+ and VoLTE are different things. As well as data while on a call.
VoLTE means your call is being transmitted over LTE. I'm pretty sure you can use data while on a call WITHOUT VoLTE.

How do you test if VoLTE is working? Do you get an Icon for it?
I tested WiFi calling by going into airplane mode, turning Wifi on, and making a call and it worked. But didn't get a special icon for it.
For those basing your decision to buy unlocked/international vs branded, be warned. I can only speak for Att, but I spent about 2 hours arguing with their level 2 tech department and here's what I have learned. If you have a sim that is provisioned on a branded phone and then put the sim into an unlocked/international phone, you will be able to use volte, wi-fi calling, etc., but only until the carrier pings your imei for a periodical check, once that happens, those features disappear. Also, on Android Pie, the Enhanced LTE Services tab under Mobile Data has been removed as it is turned on by default, also confirmed with ATT. The only way to manually check is to toggle wifi calling on and see if it works. Anyway, just trying to help as I have gone to a branded phone for the first time in 6 years because the reception and enhanced features are more important than rooting to me.
I was able to get wifi and volte working on my unlocked s10 by putting sim into verizon phone, letting network recognize it, enabling advanced calling and such on that device and then taking the sim out and putting it back in my new unlocked s10. The option for volte appears in settings-connections-mobile networks.
VoLTE works on tmobile, not that anyone should be surprised. That has been the case for the S8 thru N9. Now... I noticed that Samsung removed the VoLTE toggle from settings.

Using what I learned in this thread, I called Verizon and talked to Level2 support. They tried to get everything working and could not - but this was when I had the new SIM installed, provided by Samsung when I got my S10+.
So because others here spoke of their 'other' SIM, I suggested we try that - so I plugged in the SIM from my S8 and asked them to reprovision everything. They did... and....Now everything that didn't work ... WORKS.
So I have an Unlocked S10+ on Verizon that has (among other things):
- Wifi Calling
- Real Time Text
- VoLTE ("HD Voice") (Which means data now works while I'm on a phone call)
- Visual Voicemail
So it seems the Samsung SIM was part of the problem, and they are reporting this to Samsung. The tech support person told me others have reported similar issues and they will get with Samsung to figure out what the issue is.
Hopefully this helps some others as well!

AT&T LG G6 Keeps Hanging Up

No idea why this started happening but every time I try to make a phone call, it'll hang up immediately. Checked all the settings and nothing has been changed or altered. However, I am still able to access the internet and send text messages. When I try to check my remaining voice and data by entering *777*1#, it'll say, "Connection problem or invalid MMI". It just doesn't make any sense. Contacted Airvoice Wireless and have yet to hear back from them. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
It must be a whitelisted model if it's running on AT&T's network. 4G VoLTE must be enable in hidden settings as well. A new sim card may be needed. AT&T stopped supporting 3G altogether.
Model whitelist (more may have been added since this doc release):

Yeah. My phone's model is whitelisted. I have the H871 variant of the LG G6. After doing some research, it would seem I need a new SIM card (as you mentioned). Nothing I have tried has worked so far. I even went as far as factory resetting my phone. And of course, it did not fix the issue. It's the SIM card. I did access the hidden settings but didn't really pay much attention to the 4G settings. I'm going to go back to that and take a closer look at those options. If there's a VoLTE option, that might do the trick.

That's the problem if it was running on 3G. My Note was running on 4G VoLTE when I got it so the sim card and settings were correct.
4G VoLTE must be enabled.
AT&T advanced tech support can probably help you. May take more than one call to get someone that knows what they've doing though.

I get my service from AirVoice wireless but have yet to hear back from them. What I found out by messing around in the secret menu is that when I choose WCDMA Preferred, everything works just fine. I can call, text, and access the internet. On that setting, 4G is displayed up top. What I found out was that any setting that displays 4G LTE will block my ability to make a phone call. If it says 4G, then I am fine. The problem with this is that everything will reset when I turn off my phone. So, it's pretty annoying having to set it every time. Is there any way to make my selection permanent?

Not sure. The carrier may need to do a reset on their end.
