H918 10P... - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hello,
Coming from a Nexus 5x, I was expecting to root and go crazy with the new (refurbished) V20 that I was able to get my hands on... Little did I know, that a security update that was pushed back in July basically removed the possibility of rooting the device.. completely... I am very disappointed about this... With that said, will rooting ever be possible in the near future for this device?
Thank you everyone!

A little search goes a long way

Android L Update?

With the official release of Lollipop (Android 5.0) right around the corner, anyone have any thoughts or speculation, or facts for that matter, of when the roll outs will start coming out? I know a lot of you are probably not looking forward to this as the new security updates may make it extremely difficult to root. I, myself, am not a big modder, have done it plenty in the past, but never got deep into it and made it worth my while, so I just stick to stock. Also being that Motorola sticks to just about stock Android, I am just fine with it! Wasn't sure if this has been announced yet or if anyone has an official word yet, but I am pretty excited to get it!
I agree that the Motorola phones of the past year really haven't needed root. I had my Maxx ten months before rooting, and only did it when FoxFi stopped working to tether.
I don't hate the capacitive buttons, but I agree that with Lollipop the phone will feel a bit dated in that regard. I would hope for an option in Lollipop on the Turbo to switch to onscreen buttons if the user decided. I did that on my Maxx after root with a build.prop edit.

H990DS; Hey LG, where are the security updates for january and february 2017???!!!

where are the security updates for january and february 2017 for V20 H990DS???!!!
I wouldn't complain the newest build for the T-Mobile variant is December.
yep they're taking way too long with the updates...
I have the US996 unlocked version and we are also stuck on the December patch, hopefully we get something this month!
Hope they are working on a new build... Probably 7.1 not sure... LG won't delay this much without a reason... But as a buyer ... Its irritating and makes me to think different

H990DS unlocked also still on december security patch! come on LG!
I know if you run one one of the AOSP ROM's you can get one of the new patches. But at that point it kind of defeats the point of getting the V20.

Yeah, especially considering the second screen doesn't work with aosp :/

Call it copying all you want but with the HTC Ultra having a second screen I see a bright future for second screen in AOSP. I'll bet someone else will copy the second screen too. At that point hopefully some developers can cobble up some code that allows the second screen to finally work on the V30 if that ever exists and has that awesome feature. After all developers eventually got the pen to work on the Note series be it a few generations in the series but still. I'm confident we'll someday have a working second screen in AOSP.

This is true and I sure hope so! I mainly use the second screen for a night clock and notifications since we lack a notification led.

Been almost three months since the last update! I also have a Samsung S7 Edge (mainly for VR), and it has been getting a steady stream of updates.
This is my first LG phone (got swayed by the DAC) and it is disappointing to see the lack of support, that too for a flagship phone.
Maybe the dev team is small and currently everyone is busy with the G6. Hoping some of that stuff gets ported over to the V20. Also hoping I can eventually root the phone...
Btw, how long does LG support its flagship phones? Is it reasonable to expect two years of updates for the V20?
My previous phone, P9 Plus already have the Feb. 1, 201 sec patch. Come on LG, unlock H990DS and update V20 to 7.1 already!!!! Or at least the latest security patch!!!!

My Lg G2 had at least 4 years of support before it went capput. That is good of LG at east, just slow.
The LG G6 came pre-loaded with Feb Sec Patch, and still on 7.0
keep that in mind, we wont ever get 7.1 , if anything it will go to 8.0 next
Feb Sec Patch For Ls997 is out there but it seems like it got pulled, either to wait for G6 to launch or a issue with the code.
Either way, id be safe to assume there wont be 7.1 for us, but a jump from 7 to 8.
LG historically has skipped the .1 updates and just gone to the full fledged updates.
No update since 2016 December. Hope they will release some update in april.
yeah we can start adding march and april to the title...
Today I got the update (march).
It is V10e-SEA-xxx.

yep, looks like the SEA version is always ahead with updates...
wondering if switching from TWN to SEA would be a good solution...
LG seems to put the V-series on the slow lane. V10 was very slow to get any kind of update. It is rumored they weren't even going to update the V10 to Nougat, leaving it as it is, but T-Mobile pressured them to update it to Nougat. I'm hoping they'll not let the V20 languish, but they're throwing everything at the G6, now, and letting the V20 become the "discount" phone.
No update yet for me. My phone is at V10d-AUS-xx.

How good is LG keeping up with the Android releases and how often does it update UX?

I have been a HTC lover for almost sever years (Desire HD --> ONE X --> M7 --> M9) and I've decided to go for my next phone. Although the U11 looks like an impressive phone, I'm still a bit hesitant to go for it. Next to G6 and S8, the U11 sure looks like an ancient phone (I'm not a big fan of shinny backs and the front view of the phone looks awful in my opinion).
Not a samsung admirer hence I would like to give the G6 a try, but my only worry is how much is LG dedicated towards releasing the android updates. I didn't have troubles with HTC and I am sure Samsung will take care of this too but not I'd like to know how much is LG committed towards this. I do like the vanilla android but I don't feel like getting into the rooting business anymore (I'm too old for that and can't keep up), so I'd be heavily relying on LG OTA updates. Also I hear that LG UX has immensely improved, but would like to know if you guys think that LG will keep updating it's own UX.
Thoughts and comments are welcome, as I'd be ordering my new phone today.
Just got the G6 a few weeks ago, and as a first time LG owner I was wondering the same, I'm sure others will give more informed opinions but from what I've read LG are quite good at keeping us up to date, I've had a UX and a patch update since I got the phone which is promising.

Only been using a V20 for almost 3 weeks and from what I've read here and the V20 forum I believe LG aren't quick, or even regular, with updates.
But maybe you've left it a bit late to be asking, hope you get more replies soon.
Edit: two conflicting replies already
I am probably going to answer my own question but surprisingly LG got the first Nougat update compared to all other phones out there. Source - http://www.androidauthority.com/android-oem-update-speed-743073/
Here there are, more ore less, the major updates received by the G-Series starting from the G2:
- G2: 4.4.2, 5.0.2
- G3: 5.0, 6.0
- G4: 6.0
- G5: 7.0
LG is pretty fast to release major updates, but it isn't for security patches.

The V20 was the first phone to be released with Nougat 7 out-of-the-box.
Not a lot has happened since then.
In my experience, LG has been quick with their updates. I believe my Sprint G5 was one of the first to get the Nougat update.
LG is usually first to update to newest Android versions (except Google's own phones offcorse).
G3 was the first OEM phone to get Lollipop update, G5 was first to get Nougat,...
We may not get the 7.1 update but I'm pretty sure they'll skip it because we'll be the first ones to get Android O (minus Google's phones).
I've had this phone for almost 2 weeks now and allready got 1 UX and 2 system updates so... They're really fast.
Really does depend? My G4 is fine for updates my G5 was more miss than hit!

Petition for Android 7 G4 H815

Hello,
Don't know if it is still necessary but.. A petition for an upgrade of android 7 to our G4 H815 International version.
Android 7 came out during the 2 years of maintenance of the G4.. so... LG HAS the obligation to roll out this version to every G4 version.

I'm not trying to hate but... I've never experienced that a manufacturer took a petition for a software update/upgrade serious in any way. I've seen more than just a couple of those kind of petitions. It's pointless, it won't change anything even if it get's signed a thousand times.
Just install the "beta" version of Nougat. I've had it for over a month now and haven't noticed any setbacks. Well, other than a little screen burn, but I'm not sure if it's the Nougat or phone that's getting old. No random restarts, no FCs, nothing...Just smooth sailing. LG is not known for its good software support, so I wouldn't hold my breath about official Nougat anymore. I guess that ship has already sailed.

I know... but without a try.. we can't know if it would change something... and personally, I'm not enough good in Android things to install TWRP¨(or something..) to install the v29a (I did unlock my nexus 4 to install ROM, don't know how, I broke it... like.. really: bootloop and can't do anything)

I've LG G4 H818P. There is a high risk of root and unlocking the device due to the warranty on the device. Especially when it comes to a device such as the LG G4 that is largely prone to bootloop.

Well, the bad thing about this beta is that it is vulnerable to the recent exploits in Android as the security patch of this rom is from June 2017. So it is vulnerable to Blueborne bluetooth exploit and KRACK wifi exploit.

By not buying LG again? Okay, so which manufacturer will give you updates for a long period of time?
Maybe if some company would officially support Lineageos on their device.

I haven't said that. I just meant to say that if the next wave of LG "flagships" have poor sales, maybe they will eventually do something about it.
Maybe they improve on their support, or on their quality control, I don't know.
In the short run, they will probably just ignore os.
But in the long run, if the sales figures go down and the number of support calls and/or device recalls go up maybe, just maybe, they will do something about it.
Who knows, maybe I will buy another LG product/phone if the quality and support of their devices will improve. But as it now stands, they are going down fast.
The latest sales figures already posted here are self explanatory.
LG is a bad smartphone manufacturer - majority of their recent phones have been plagued with issues (some serious some not so much)
no point in petitions cause they will ignore them, and even if they don't and actually release Android 7.0 for G4, thats still a year old OS which LG will leave at version 7.0..
just buy a smartphone that is easy to root (oneplus 5?) and go with lineage OS or something similar that gets updated on a daily basis
LG is **** tier and both their hardware and software suck

I agree for the version, but not for root.
I tried with my nexus 4, I scre** it up. totally. And reading articles telling you that you have a lot of manipulations to root etc, no thanks... Except if you have a software that you install normally and boum... rooted.
I will see if the V30 will be released with oreo version. Which i doubt....

To root, or not to root? - WAS-LX2

Hey.
First of all, I apologized for such a newbie question because I never root any phone before (been interested to do so but scared if spoilt the phone).
Second thing is, i have sign up for the EMUI 8.0 FUT project but haven't got any reply yet .
I'm using WAS-LX2 and out of warranty recently.
So....
Is it advisable to root the device? I mean how does it improve if compare to stock. Is it stable enough?
Can I still do the beta EMUI if I root it?
Or its better if I wait up for the beta oreo to ends then only root it?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers!
How the hell do you have a phone out of warranty after ~1 year? As far as rooting goes, no OTA updates, in any shape, way or form, and if you do the wrong things, you can even brick your device. So, as far as i am concerned, root, but don't come back to complain after you've bricked it.

Some countries have one year warranties as standard. Not many companies go beyond the minimum unless you pay for it (eg extended warranty service).
