Hi,
Hope you are well.
I recently bought this phone however I mistakenly bought the 16gb model. Now I added an SD card in the phone but I can't encrypt any files on my SD Card using ES File Explorer. I have searched and found out many posts related to this as people say android restricted third party apps from gaining full access after Kit Kat. So I wanted to know is there any solution for this to make my SD Card just like the internal storage? Root/Unrooted both solutions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
My S4 isn't able to modify the microSD card content.
Neither with the File explorer nor via USB from windows.
I tried formatting, deleting, everything.
It works for the moment, but as soon as I unmount the card and mount it again, all data is as before.
I don't have a pc adapter handy, so I don't know what file format the card has.
It's a Sandisk 64GB.
I can't say if it ever worked, because I probably copied that data that is on there directly at my pc.
It's really strange and hopefully someone has a solution.
S4 have issue with SD cards he kills them is not a joke there's topic with that issue maybe yours card is at the end

Have you tried using something like Root Explorer to check (and change if necessarry) the permissions on your SD card? you want read and write on there.
Hi, i recently got a galaxy s4 that was already on kitkat when i got it.
It didnt come with a micro sd card so i decided to buy a 32gb card from amazon.
I recieved the micro sd card in the post today, put it straight into my galaxy, tried to move music from the phone to the sd card through astro file manager but it came up with a write failed error!?!
I was reading today that it has something to do with the kitkat update? Is this true?
I see it as pointless having a phone with expandable storage capabilities but due to the heavy touchwiz you only have a 9 gb device.
I dont have a computer at the moment and was wondering if there was any work around to getting my files from my phone to the sd card?
Sorry if this has been asked a lot but i just got my s4 so a bit late to the party.
Thanks for any info given
Take care
This is fixable if you're rooted. Go to the Play Store and download SD Card Fix. Run it to modify the system file which controls read/write access to the card.
If that doesn't solve the problem, then either the card or the slot is damaged.
P.S. If you're not rooted, it is possible to root without needing a PC using Mobile Odin, but using a PC may be a better option.

Use Stock File Manager should be fine...
Thanks for ur replies, i tried using the stock file manager and its done the trick. Thanks very much for ur help
First, I was using 64gb uhs-1 and can't create a folder in the es file Explorer.. Always I encounter the "unfortunately, documents stopped working."
Here's the solution:
1. Format SD in Windows to NTFS
2. allocation default
3. This is important! RENAME sd card.. Eg. Shield, Android etc.
4. turn off the device, insert SD card. Reboot.
Now it's read and writable..

Yes! This worked for me!! Thanks
BTW, why the Shield has problems reading FAT32? I can't understand it..
will this work on the S5 (Verizon variant), I have a friend that doesn't want to root her phone, but needs R/W access on her SD card. is this the solution?

My shield read the FAT32 format just fine...but I did have to name the micro SD card first.
Hmm.. I have the galaxy s5 on lolipop 5.0
will this work for me? Simply renaming the card while formating will do away with the write permission cap they implemented?
No longer working in 5.1
This method no longer works in Android 5.1 on the shield tablet, it results in a No Root Access message. Anybody have a method that works on Android 5.1
Still works for me on 5.1. Of course it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Some actions will always require root.
I am electronically illiterate. I don't understand any of the directions. Can someone be kind enough to dumb this down a thousand notches?
Since MM upgrade I am unable to move or delete files using ES file explorer. Is anyone else experiencing Sd card issues?
Any known fixes?
Yes I'm experiencing the samething. I can't even delete or add files to SD card when I connect to my pc either

I can still do stuff through the computer, it is ES File Explorer specifically that is giving me issues, and I pretty much had to reset all my programs that use the SD card to the new name for the SD card that marshmallow seems to have changed it to...
I am unable to transfer files from my phone memory to my sd card.
I am also unable to transfer files from my pc to sd card in the phone. I have no issue transferring files from pc to phone memory.
I can view and open files on the sd card and the phone is able to play music and movies stored on the sd card.
Can anyone help me fix this issue?
Thanks!
I don't have such problem at all.
Try different file browsers like ES File Explorer and Astro.
If those do not work, try and factory reset your phone and ask for a replacement if the problem still persists after that.

Does the phone read the sd card? Do you have anything on it to access? If not I would suggest formatting the sd card.

The phone reads all the files on the sd card. I get an error that says Access denied when i copy a file from the phone memory to any folder on the SD card...however I get no error when I copy the files to the root SD card. It's weird...not sure whats going on.
You need to use the stock file manager to copy to the sd card or from the sd to internal as this is a "security feature" since Android lollipop. If you wish to use any other file explorer you MUST be rooted...

I use ES File Explorer and it works - and I won't root until ZTE posts full factory roms for the US version.
I still think there is some issue with the sd card that can be solved by formatting it - if the phone won't move files to it and the pc recognizes the phone but not the sd card how did you get files on it in the first place?

Not true. I just used Solid Explorer to copy files from internal memory to the SD card. There was an extra procedure of selecting the sd card in what looks like the stock storage selection menu thing (that also has Drive, Downloads etc) which was apparently necessary for Solid Explorer to get the necessary permission. Maybe it doesn't work with old file explorer apps that haven't implemented this solution, but it definitely works with Solid Explorer without root.
