kernel flashing - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So I've asked on telegram and on the kernel thread for some help and didn't really get an answer. So hoping some one can give me a definitive answer to my query.
I have a fully stock s8+ on latest firmware. For now i just want to try a kernel and later I can have a look at roms, got one in mind but there's no rush.
Anyway is the following steps correct?
1. Flash twrp
2. Flash kernel
Or do I have to cf-autoroot before I do any of the above? Tia

Flash TWRP
Flash kernel.
So long as you don't have a snapdragon variant then that's all you have to do.

Okay cool, I do have the exynos version, I have noticed that there is an oem unlock option in developer options, should I make sure I enable that 1st?

For future reference when someone tries to help, its best not to disrespect them....
I have the i9500 and all i did was flash CWM.zip using ODIN on my PC.
Then you can flash superuser.zip in CWM. Piece of cake!
Do you need a how to guide for that or do you know what I mean?
Does this method work on new kernels with the root-block thing?

I wouldn't use either of those methods. They require too much transferring between PC and device. Which is where incomplete flashing and hard bricking occurs.
I would just flash CWM using odin... Then you can do what ever you want i.e. flash super user, or a kernel or custom ROM that has root.

If your boot loader is locked (Like the AT&T version) then you will need to unlock that first, then root.

Excuse the noob question. How do I know if my bootloader is unlocked. I bought my phone in an airport in the duty free and is sim unlocked, but I dont know if the bootloader is unlocked.
In case it is unlocked, then the new cofface CWM should be able to root my phone?
Thanks in advance

Is it the i9500? Then thats unlocked.
The i9505 is mostly unlocked unless its from AT&T...
Yes you should be able to just flash CWM using ODIN, and you are good to go. If the bootloader is locked then the flash using ODIN wont work. Thats all. Nothing will happen. (it wont stuff up your phone)

All good. You are set to go!
Take a look at my youtube channel (link in the signature)
I've done a look at a few things to fix the S4 octa. Like a kernel that fixes zRam issues and a ROM review on both the OMEGA ROM and wanam ROM...
What are you saying is we really don't need any PC to root this? and what's ODIN?
When i root my HTC there's specific 'HTC only' files called HBOOT, Unlock_code.bin through HTCDev.com website
is ODIN specific 'Samsung only' files as well?
I know I've root my Samsung Galaxy Young S5360 but that thing's already come pre-rooted, just like my Galaxy Note 2
(forgot to add both to my sig, maybe after rooting s4 -.,-)
Also, how to unlock Samsung's bootloader in general? It doesn't need SamsungDev.com website or such right? :silly:

ODIN is a tool that you use on your PC.
You plug your S4 into your PC via USB and then ODIN adds the clockwork mod recovery files to the system.
- This is a video i created on how to root the galaxy Note. So for your S4 its exactly the same, except the file you are flashing is different.
Link: Kernel to flash...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1985575&d=1369329536
Once you have flashed this kernel, then when you reboot it will say you are not rooted, do you want to root. So you just say yes, and then it will reboot and you are done...
There's no ODIN for S4 octa core version?
1.85 is for GT-I9505... :silly:
I don't know why making a great deal out of it it's very simple you can use cofface method HERE and then goto odin 3.07 which does support i9500.... set his file in the pda section and flash it (of course when you are in download mode) thats about it, goto recovery and use the root option there is a menu for rooting in there.
these are the files use them http://d-h.st/WM2
don't forget to stop by his thread and hit the thanks button.

I've been following this thread and have used your method hamdogg and don't think I'm rooted. It seemed too easy. How can I check?? I tried an app that says I need root access, and it didnt work. So am I right to assume that I am not rooted?
Thanks..

Hi Gregg. If you flashed the kernel then you will need to boot into CWM, then select 'reboot'. Once you have done that it will prompt you to 'root'.
Thats it... easy. Then your apps that require root will work.

SM-910S Problems in rooting and also flashing a stock rom

Hello,
I recently trying to root my device. I try different methods like Cf-auto root even installing a zip on recovery method but both gives me a bootloop that requires me to reflash my stock firmware. My device is currently running lollipop. Also I can only flash stock firmwares lollipop same version or higher but not a downgrade like lollipop to kitkat because I try to downgrade it to kitkat and odin give me a red fail indicator and on my device downloading mode said SW Rev Check Fail fused 2 Binary 1. Can someone determine the problem or is there something that can i do?
Thank you so much !

You should search this forum, there are some thread already discussing about this problem + solution.
You most likely are using 5.1.1 Stock Lollipop which is "can't" be rooted unless you flash custom PERMISSIVE kernel.

No one discussed about this note 4 variant regarding to my problem. My note4 is SM-910S the korean one. I think it blocks everything i can't even root or reflash it to kitkat stock firmware.

It's a known problem to root ANY 5.1.1 Lollipop regardless of handset

First time building a ROM

I really want to put a custom ROM on my phone (Asus ZenFone Laser 2 - ZE500KL), obviously without bricking it. Because I can't find RessurectionRemix or LineageOS already built, I'm going to try building by myself.
I can't find any good tutorials, but I tried this one, but I got an error right when installing the libraries... Because I know no one is going to build it for me, can someone suggests a step by step tutorial? (I have amateur Linux skills, I'm not any pro, but not any noob)
You can find LineageOS/AOKP/RR for ZE500KL here. here
Make sure you get the Z00ED version.

Well, I found that post but didn't notice there was an "Z00ED" in the title... By the way, some steps would be good to install it, because if I brick this, I'm dead... I know the steps, but making sure of them would be great...

You unlock the bootloader then you flash TWRP.. After that you wipe DATA/CACHE/DALVICK CACHE and you flash your ROM and GAPPS (ARM64).

So, if something go wrong in the process, I would just need to do the exact same process but with the stock ROM right?
Make sure your bootloader is unlocked before flashing twrp, go to fastboot and type this
fastboot oem device-info
if you see this -->> (bootloader)Device unlocked: true
then you are unlocked, then proceed to flash your device twrp latest version.

2. On that LineageOS post, what is the AOKP? xD I already checked the website but I didn't get what it is, and if it comes with the ROM...
You dont need to root because the rom is already pre rooted. But you can change root to SuperSU or PHH Superuser if you want.
AOKP are custom ROM developers/modders.

Custom Rom Question

Okay so I have a rooted s7 edge G935A on QC2 with android 7.0.
Now my question is, is there a way to flash a custom rom with flashfire and maybe flash a kernal or something with Odin. Or how would that all work out? If you could tell me or link me to a guide for this that would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Do you think anyone could make a custom ROM for the G935A and make it so we could flash it with flashfire? I know there is the echoed rom but that is only for marshmallow and I'm on 7.0. Is there any developers I should talk to about making a nougat rom, or should I just wait.

It is Exynos right?
You just can't downgrade bootloaders, with the build number you just posted, if you count 5 in from the end, you can see you are on bootloader 6, so you can not flash bootloader 5 or lower filmware.
As long as you have the OEM toggle turn on, you can flash TWRP and a custom rom. Just if you want to go back to stock filmware, just make sure you flash bootloader 6 or higher.
When reverting, if I flash bootloader 5, my phone (it is exynos) will brick or simply not work?
Also, please could someone link which twrp is the right one to flash (can I just use regular Odin as well?) because there are so many out there and I really don't want to brick.
Thanks in advance.

Odin will just fail and not do anything, I screwed up something and had to reflash factory image, but didn't realize I was flashing an older bootloader version, once I tried to flash current one and it was fine
