My device was running Fire OS 5.0 and I installed my copy of Titanium Pro (used APK extractor on another Android device as play not working on 5.0).
I then proceeded to kill as many Amazon processes based on my Remove Bloat thread - I actually deleted them from the device so that they were no longer there. I kept the OTA processes in place - reset the device from [Recovery Mode] and upon boot joined WiFi and proceeded with the upgrade to 5.01
The update by the looks of things repaired the Fire OS and the system processes that I had deleted were now back on the device (Kindle Book Store etc). It also removed root from the device.
So just like everyone says - disabled OTA updates if you do not wish t remove root.
Were you able to reinstall root post update?

Would love to know also
Sent from my Amazon Fire 2015
i reinstalled the firmware to give it real factory reset, and applied OTA twice yesterday, but I could make it rooted after that. So I guess you can reinstall root again because the updated system did not reject root.

Yes I was able to root 5.01 after the OTA update
I would strongly advise everyone to disable the OTA processes. If you want to update a new device from 5.0 to 5.0.1 you can do so manually. Fire (5th Gen) updates are available here https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201830180
Who knows when amazon will roll out the next OTA, tomorrow, next week, next month. And they certainly might block root with it. The fire cost us only $50, amazon may be losing money on the straight device price. They want us to spending money on all the premium amazon services that we are striping out as bloat. They may need the money to even break even.
Huh... This actually gave me some insight into the OTA bit. I went and pulled the latest update and it basically overwrites the system partition. That's why it seems to undo everything you did. This is good though because it also means if it won't boot then I should be able to get into 3e recovery and sideload the most recent update back to the device. I tested this by flashing google play then "repairing" using the update and google play was no longer present from this. It also doesn't seem to wipe userdata when doing this which is nice.
updated to fire os 5 and followed quickly to updating to 5.1.1.1 today
this is a saturn 8.9 hdx i tried the http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/root-t3272362
root method for 5.1.1.1 but this command
fastboot oem append-cmdline "androidboot.unlocked_kernel=true"
came as invalid command for me so the boot loaders are still configured differently for the new hd6 and the older hdx because we don't have this cmdline parameter
Hello,
was there a possibility to prevent updating to 5.1.1 after 5.0 was installed or was it 1 update process?
Did you have sideloaded Apps installed and have there been any problems during installation?
Are the settings still the same or was there any kind of reset?
How about the speed of the system so far compared to OS4?

For others still waiting for an update: try to avoid the 5.0 -> 5.1 update as there *may* be additional flexibility to boot (not flash) a custom recovery from fastboot environment. This would offer the potential for custom roms on a 4th gen device. All TDB.
I haven't received the OTA so I checked the amazon website. It's not there either. Am I stuck waiting on the OTA?

Has anyone else got the ota yet? this is the first guy I seen has got 5.0 as of yet.
Hey sorry for the late reply
It updated to 5.0.0 first it was possible to stop the update to 5.1.1 by keeping WiFi off but I din't bother
I installed gapps and they work fine on 5.1.1 play store works fine all google apps like mail and maps and hangouts work solid no glitches the new version is smooth and way better YouTube app can play 1440p videos also I had to do the adb permission command to get play store to work
The way the ota is being rolled out is weird I know people who haven't received it yet on there kindle and it's been over 2 weeks since I got my update
lol... WOT?
Fire OS OTAs are usually Canary Releases [0]... or Narrow-OTAs (aka NOTAs): Rolled out to a small percentage of the populace initially after which these devices are monitored for stability and user-feedback. If all looks right, the OTAs are gradually rolled out to everyone (aka WOTAs).
[0] http://martinfowler.com/bliki/CanaryRelease.html
Any body else received OS5 yet? I'm still on 4.5.5.1
I'm in the US, still no joy here!
Got it last night, updated, lost root in update but regained after with Kingroot no problem.
Been checking daily, just now got the update!
---------- Post added at 02:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 AM ----------
Just checked as well, amazon has the 5.1.1 update posted now.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_left_v4_sib?ie=UTF8&nodeId=201596890
In the US also. OS 5.1.1 is posted on Amazon for update NOW. 2 choices, select the OTA method or the manual way. The OTA didn't work for me as it couldn't find any updates; did download the file & use USB to copy the file to the internal storage (not into a folder) of the Fire HDX 8.9 4th gen.
Guys,
Sorry for noob question, how to mount system.new.dat (from update-kindle-22.5.4.1_user_541113320.bin)?
mount -o loop=/dev/loop0 system.new.dat /mnt

My 8.9 updated at last.
Installed 5.1.1 manually on HDX Saturn and Google play store afterwards. Much better experience than OS4. Cleaner look and settings and more mature.
The only loss I found so far that the ability for VPN networks has been completely removed. I do not understand why Amazon did this?

Thanks, had to run it twice as first time didn't take for some reason.
Amazon has posted the 5.1.2.1 version on the website :
https://kindle-fire-updates.s3.amaz...Wt5/update-kindle-20.5.4.2_user_542169020.bin
Kingroot probably does not work ...
I'll take it for a spin, to make sure the update via TWRP works smoothly, and report back.
Exercise caution until we know if downgrading 5.1.2.1 to the earlier versions is safe or not. The 2015 Fire forums report that the downgrade works fine. But the 2014 Fire HDs is a different beast ...
The bad news, the great news

5.1.2.1 definitely can't be rooted with Kingroot. Tried multiple times, using all suggestions I've read, like clearing recents, clearing data/cache, standing on head (FWIW, there's a weird message: "Research requests is not enough (1 ppls)" Wonder if ppls is people and if more tried Kingroot on HD 7s (and 2015s) running OS 5.1.2.1 the KR folks might try to get us root. IDK, the msg may mean something else entirely.) Anyway . . .
OS 5.1.2.1 downgrades to 5.1.2 just fine!!! In stock recovery I factory reset, adb-sideloaded 5.1.2, and cleared cache. It booted into 5.1.2 purring like a kitten. Rooted with Kingroot no problem!
I have a nice little Windows tool that installs kingroot and as soon as user tells it tablet is rooted (hits Enter), it blocks OTA installation, looks for downloaded updates (and finds them!) and lists them for user to delete. Very handy. I've used it after several downgrades and haven't been caught with my OTAs down yet. Upgrades don't install until device is idle, so just have to hit enter as soon as rooted and you're safe. Will post it tomorrow. Needs testing on other (non-Win7) systems.

OK, nice ! Thanks for testing!
Not sure why cannot you block OTA before Kingroot ? Why not do "pm disable com.amazon.otaverifier" right away with Network off , then turn Network on, and run Kingroot?

Since 5.1.1 neither hide nor disable work without root. Disable won't run and hide returns new state=true, but hasn't done anything. Check output of Debloater.
EDIT: Disable=permission denial. Looks like hide doesn't return anything.

This is weird. It's a major departure from the usual Android, where one can block programs via adb & PC.
Is it just OTA that cannot be blocked ? Or other stuff like lockscreen ads are also unblockable ? Was this discussed somewhere here ?
This seems to suggest then that going to 4.5.3 first is preferred, this way one can block OTA before Kingroot, and then upgrade to Lollipop via TWRP.

Discussion was mainly in 2015 forums, where people started getting updated. It's true of everything we block, although there were some reports of ads staying gone until a reboot. Not sure about that since (FWIW) if you pm hide anything, Debloater shows it as unblocked. When I first saw posts I assumed it would apply to Fire HD and tested. Just assumed it was known.
OTAverifier could be blocked on 4.5.3, so downgrading to that makes sense and is safest. I'm confident in my tool, though, although there's a risk of a update if an inattentive user walks away and leaves the system idle. I've got warnings in the script and as long as one is trying to root (or otherwise keeping the system busy), a download won't install--and the moment devicesoftwareota is renamed it CAN'T install. I've done this more than 10 times and found that I usually don't get a download, even when it takes many tries with a couple of reboots to root. Still, I once found an update in /sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.device.software.ota/files and once found the prelimary file in /cache. Although they couldn't install after the rename block, this is why I put in the file check.
Finally tested the upgrade via TWRP, everything worked fine :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950
This new version reports itself as 5.1.2 (Mar 30, 2016 build). Not sure what was fixed other than the bug that lets Kingroot in !
Paging DoLooper here, thanks again for the early testing!!!
I have rooted my phone and installed Titanium Backup. What processes do I need to freeze to prevent OTA updates from automatically downloading and installing? I tried the usually keywords, but it seems like the only process that might be an updater is ConfigUpdater. Is that all I need to freeze? Thanks.

I don't think it will automatically download, but you're always going to have the notification telling you an update is available.
So far I've found an option called "Automatic System Updates" in Developer Options, I have turned that off. I guess there's no way to block it from checking for new updates?
I think I've figured out what to block to prevent the update from downloading. I use AdAware to log the DNS requests when the phone is trying to download an update. There where a few URLs, but the one needs to be blocked seems to be redirector.gvt1.com. After blocking this url the OTA update download will pause itself (probably because it can't reach the server). I don't know what other Google services it'll affect, but I've tried downloading an app from Play Store and searching for an address in Google Map, they still work. So I'm going to block that URL for now. I can always temporarily unblock it for certain app updates if they need that redirector url.
Same Problem here
I have a Rooted Lenovo Yoga Tab YT3-850M running Android version 6.0.1, and I am struggling with this same issue. I used TWRP and Magisk.
Even if I enable Developer Options, there is no option to turn off Automatic Updates.
And it keeps downloading and installing the OTA System Updates. It fails to install, but keeps on doing it again and again.
I don't know how to stop it. The only thing is I disabled it from doing the Update over Mobile Data, and I switched off the Wifi to get some relief.
And am now hunting online for some method to either install the OTA, and go back to Root (or) to Disable OTA Updates permanently...

The solution is even simpler:
There won't be any more monthly QTA updates for this phone anyway, as the company behind the phone went bankrupt and stopped doing updates since February 2020...

Yeah, we knew that, but many people don't use Feb because TWRP doesn't work well with it, so they rolled back to Jan, and that's why the OTA kicks in.

Making sure you're using the right version from xda ( and your device is rooted, I assumed)

I did the same exact thing 4 times in a row and it is now persistent through reboots. Try number 2 caused magisk to claim no root after reboot. Very weird.
My wife has the same phone and the exact same setup, it took 3 tries to make hers work. Her phone never lost root.
Neither phone is prompting for updates. Very cool! This is a step in the right direction.
Both phones do show the update available notification icon on the right side of the notch. Should this go away as well? I tried multiple cache/dalvik wipes to no avail.
Thanks,
JD
Hello,
Just realized that I now have Amazon Assistant installed (might be after the last update a week or so ago). I can't uninstall it - can only disable sit (which I have done)
Was just searching the web and saw quite a few mentioned of a virus (windows based). Am I the only one with it?
Is there a way to uninstall it without root? Want to keep my phone unrooted so that's not an option.
Yes,you can use ADB to remove unwanted apps. No root required.
As far as I remember amazon assistant appeared with the Oreo update. It was one of the first apps I removed from my rom
Check out this thread for more info.

Yes, I have the same problem. Why would this suddenly appear with Oreo?
