It's very difficult to take any good pictures without them being blurry either. Clearly Sprint didn't see this or brushed it under the rug?
Try putting some tape over the lens and see if that helps.

It's noisy because like all lower end digital camera's it automatically adjusts the ISO rating depending on how much light is involved. The less light the more noise.
Have u tried focusing b4 taking th picture?

You can set the ISO in the options. Also, setting the brightness helps as well.

Isn't the manufacturer HTC and not Sprint? Anywho, with a low end sensor, it's expected to be noisy. And by low end I'm just comparing to Canon's, Nikon's and Sony's sensors. I think we're just a little spoiled by those ultra compact cameras and forget what the phones are really for. But in low-light, you're always going to have a lot of noise (i'm assuming they're low-light shots). All day-time, well-lit shots of mine are actually really nice.

BTW the Evo is using the same backlit sensor technology as the new iPhone. I think everyone is giving good advice in setting the ISO manually. Even my old 5mp dsl type camera performed poorly at higher ISO.

Hey Vandam500! Good to see another former iPhone (well, soon to be. Ordered an EVO last night) user from MR.
As for the EVO camera. I've seen some good pictures with it and some noisy ones. I think it's going to all depend on the light you take it in. It's a high megapixel camera with a small sensor.
It's not going to replace my DSLR or even my old PowerShot. It's a camera on a phone and I'm excited to use it.
Thats actually a produced sound comming from the speaker, you can turn it off in settings.

I reread the original post again since I forgot the exact wording. Nope we were right the first time.
Btw going to the link you posted about the sensor showed me the specs I was looking for.
Apple was touting their 5mp being better cuz of pixel size.
Well each pixel in the iphone is 1.75 microns while the ones in the EVO are 1.4 microns. A typical point and shoot is around 2 microns. So cell phone cameras aren't that far off from compacts. Of course a Nikkon D3 for example is 8.3 microns per pixel.
Ok guys, I have a "blind test" for you. Which one of this 2 photos, u like best.
Both camera settings were: P-mode, ISO100, Spot light metering, SuperFine quality, 0.0x optical zoom, no flash (in-door lighting), AWB.
Since I use P-mode, the Aperture and Shutter speed were automatically set by each camera.
PS: I will add more photos to this blind test, the left side will always be photos from *censored* and the right side will always be photos from *censored*
After the poll closed, I will tell you the "identity" of the left photos and the right photos.
If you want everyone to vote, you need to add an "I can't see any material difference" option to the poll .

In my opinion, the one on the right is a bit grainier, and both of them are a little soft on focus. Would really prefer to see both cameras at the same distances (ideally one with no zoom and one with) shooting at a standard target. DPreview has a good example for the PowerShot, but neither they nor their "Connect" site has a Galaxy Camera review.
after zooming in it seems the one on the left is a bit sharper.
and you left the exif data in, so it's still possible to tell which is which if you download the pictures.
I voted before checking which was made with which camera.

About the zoom feature, SGC anti-shake is really bad. I shot an object with maximum optical zoom (21x) using a tripod, and still couldn't get a clear shot. The problem is, when we hit the shutter button, our finger pressure on the shutter button will make the camera move albeit really little (almost unnoticeable). The anti-shake should compensate for this, but it doesn't.
With the Canon camera and a tripod, I can get a clear shot easily using max optical zoom 20x which means the anti-shake does the job well.
My personal solution for this is, I use 2 seconds timer. After I hit the shutter button, I immediately lift my hands of the camera (it is on the tripod) so the camera has enough time to get back into "steady position" and I can get a clear shot.

Using voice control also prevents the button press from shaking the camera, but it does seem silly to talk to your camera (and it only worked well for me in very quiet conditions when I was playing with it).

As most of the photos I take a in quiet locations (in the middle of the woods) this seems like it would benefit the technologically equipped nature enthusiast. My curiosity lays with the camera/phone durability in the elements and the quality of the shots while on the go. Versatility of those qualities would sell this product to me.
Other qualities I seek are how the camera responds to IR lighting at night and how it handles the common accidental drop.
I think this guy is the start of a beautiful line of products we should hope to see in the future. It would definitely halt my project of creating a USB 76mm zoom attachment for the daily smart phone. (that's as much detail as you'll get until I finish! If I finish...)

For SGC, Samsung actually recommends against using OIS with a tripod. But of a limitation, but in theory, with a tripod you may not need OIS. I may be wrong though, as I know squat about cameras.

I can't comment on this camera in particular as I don't have it "yet" but I am a photographer and I can confirm that using stabilization whilst on a tripod can have the adverse affect on the image and is generally better for the image quality if you turn it off, if you are using a tripod. There can be exceptions to this however, if you're using a telephoto lens (or in the case of this camera, using the zoom guilt extended) and there is slight movement in the camera from wind for example.

Yes, the guidance for most OIS systems is that if the camera is on a tripod you should turn off anti-shake as the device will then keep trying to compensate for something that isn't there. You end up burning battery, and the lens will often make micro moves to compensate for what "should" be there.
The one exception would be if the tripod itself isn't stable (wind, etc), but then you would question what the point to using the tripod is in that case.
Left pic is sharper.
I think the left is more vibrant.
Rather than ISO100, how about 800 or higher? Almost any camera, even the cheapest, can do OK at ISO100 in good light.

I do ISO 100 on purpose.
SGC noise is bad starting from ISO800 and up, while the Canon still has good quality pic on ISO800 and up.
If I compare the pic on ISO800 plus, everyone will easily know which one the canon and which one the SGC
please note that my purpose showing this comparation is not to show that SGC pic quality can beat or on par with Canon SX260, I just want to show that for normal photography, SGC is sufficient enough.
first of all i'm not a professional photographer and based from my point of view, left picture is more vibrant than the right picture.
Hi everyone,
As i have rooted my Z2, i was able to install Xposed Framework. In Xposed Modes i found a mode which 'force' camera to use full 20 mp (or 15 mp in wide shot) in Superior Auto Mode. I have taken some pics to compare quality but couldn't understand anything. As i know, many of you guys are very interested in photography and know a lot about it, i decided to share some pics with you and let you decide which is better. Here's the link of 4 pics, 2 of them in 8 mp and 2 with 15 mp. (The names of the files indicate 'MP'): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vvpghc7w187b1ia/_uUAk9NFry
Can provide more shots if needed.

Great effort. Somehow I noticed the 15 mp has a wider angle. Generally they look very close and still very good quality for both, maybe different lighting conditions and in daylight too maybe easier to distinguish which is best.
There is a great discussion on quality 8MP and 20MP. Many say 8Mp is better than 20MP, which contain more vivid colors. This video explains a little about!

You motivated me to finally put up an avatar.
From my tests and I've done a lot of them since I got the phone last month.
8mp in manual mode with my own settings produced the best results in all lighting conditions. Focusing for me is the z2's greatest problem and one which gets worse the more you increase the resolution.
From the watch photo the OP posted, you can clearly see that the 8mp sample is better focused. At 8mp, everything is better, detail preservation, focus, contrast and dynamic range. Yes you can't zoom in as far as you can with the 15 and 20.7mp snaps but the quality is noticeably better.

Thanks, very interesting!
Quality is comparable, actually at certain shots SA at 8MP is maybe a more consistently detailed, 15MP is sometimes a little noisier and I don't see much quality edge.
Where this can be very useful however is shooting large resolution full 4:3 frame SA images, as on stock we're limited to 8MP @16:9. It makes sense to give the full 4:3 option, and I'd love to see some 8MP vs. 20MP SA comparisons, if you have the time. :good:

Looks good... Pixel is overrated, but yes... Software specs are much nicer then the mate !
Hardware + mate
Software + pixel
It's interesting too see how each interprets colors. The pixel lightens every photo and can at times add colors that are not true. At the same time it takes a "nicer" looking photo in most regards when it does not add that odd haze or noise. I'm going to enjoy making a low light comparison.

Was the Pixel XL set to HDR+ Auto, or HDR+ On?
The Mate 9 looks like it was set to 12 MP, not 20 MP - don't know if this would have made a difference. And it was shot in HDR mode for every shot?
(Edit: now I see that the Mate 9 can only do 12 MP in HDR)
I plan on doing a comparison as well with my XL and V20, various modes, etc.

I'd like to see if setting the Mate 9 to 20 MP would give it more detail than the Pixel. I'm also really curious if the 2X zoom on the Mate 9 is better than just a straight crop of the same area. Need a comparison of that! I'll do some this weekend myself.
I could be wrong but I thought the mate 9 20mp was reserved for black and white lens only.

Nope. Go to regular Photo mode, and 20 MP is an option. It actually saves in 20 MP resolution and all. It is supposed to get the detail from the 20 MP sensor, then color fill with the RGB sensor.
Ok, I did use that when shooting. I just thought it was reserved for the b&w only.

Not so much difference from where I stand, as those are static scenes in relativelly "good" lighting conditions. We would see more references in lower light (street at night, forest in night) and with moving objects like kids, pets. Only difference I have noticed in attached photos is a tiny bit more details and much more noise in Google Pixel photos. Also post processing is different, with Pixel producing brighter images. But nothing that couldn't be reproduced on Mate 9 using manual post processing. At least in attached photos.

Agree completely. It was very cloudy that day and you can see the difference in the depth of the clouds. I plan on taking some night shots soon. But the pixel has an amount of noise in its photos that I find rather unpleasant.
camera configuration on this phone could risult in insane quality:
I had nexus 5 and I made photos of much better quality than dslr, really. That's why I'm still using that phone. how?
https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera
this simple app let you shot an INSTANT burst of 20 RAW shots in BRACKETING, which merged in camera raw results in perfect photos even in extreme low light. So 20 raw shots + instant burst + bracketing.
I'd like to have the same function on Op5 (maybe more than 20shots per burst?), but (this is important) for both sensors at the same time.
Optical zoom is only 1,5x so I ensure that if we merge in photoshop a bracketing burst of both sensor we'll obtain the quality of professional expensive camera.
I can attach some examples of what Nexus5 reaches with this function if you want, but who's expert in camera raw hdr editing understands the insane result reachable
edit: i tried the app and it works! with our 16mp resolution, so it is fittable to any phone. the only problem remains that raw shots acquired with non op-camera apps are kind of blurred-violet
+1

Can you please send me the apk link too, Thanks
Here you can find all releases. Just download the apk and install. It's working for Oneplus 5 https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera/releases
Samples ?
i would like to see feedback from anyone who used the app please ?
All 3rd party app returns images with a pink tint when shooting in raw.
Looking to buy the 5 real soon. Subscribing to this thread. Any comparison shots yet?
why not link the apk here? you're clearly not suffering restrictions to not post links here. Unconventional. someone else had to link lol

No way at all! You might get some good shots out of your Nexus 5, but "much better than a DSLR?" Definitely not if you're using the DSLR properly.

ROFL, I'm an enthusiast photographer and shoot with a Nikon D3 and I laughed my a$$ off reading that. The OP is delusional. There just is no way you'll out do a DSLR with a camera phone if you have any clue on what you're doing with the camera. With total control of a current smartphones camera you might get close to what a DSLR will get you on auto.... MAYBE, and forget from a phone from 3 or4 year old smartphone camera.

Another enthusiast here (D800) and I am willing to be more charitable. In good daylight a cell phone camera will produce images that are more or less on par with a mid-low end dslr, at least in terms of basic technical things such as noise, acuity. I do agree that in lousy light all bets are off, and this is what the OP implied.

In good light they will be close on the camera maybe at 100% on a phone screen. You put that baby on a PC monitor and start pixel peeping and really scrutinize, it won't be close
