Hey guys! So i've narrowed down my choices for a new phone:
Huawei Mate 7 or Xperia Z3. Both are great sexy phones but I like the larger screen, fingerprint, and less bezel on the mate 7. Both have around the same screen on time (around 10 hrs).
For Mate 7:
- Screen looks washed out compared to other flagships, Z3 gets brighter
+ Bigger screen, smaller bezels
+ Fingerprint scanner
? Kirin 925 (I've heard its worse than the 801 and has lags and micro stutters when scrolling in browser, is the phone laggy?)
For Xperia Z3:
+ Bright, colorful screen
- Smaller screen, bigger bezels
+ Front facing stereo speakers
+ Faster updates (It's nice but I don't really mind that much about updates, as long as the mate7 eventually gets lollipop)
Is there some way to adjust the colors and make it more saturated/vivid on the Mate 7? and are the reports of the Mate 7 lagging in browser etc true? Please help me decide what you would go for if you had the choice between these two
It would depend on how you would use the phone. If you are just a regular user and a non techy one. Mate7 is good enough. But keep in mind that Emui has no app drawer. Updates are slow compared to Sony. Limited custom Roms if you are in to that. I would suggest reading the owner's impressions thread to see how others like the phone and the pros and cons for them.

Thanks. I primarily use my phone for social stuff like Facebook and Whatsapp (though barely use the camera), listening to Music, and heavy gaming, like GTA San Andreas (which i've heard runs extremely well on max settings (because of the mali GPU in the mate 7) compared to Snapdragon devices, where they lag on max,) and Asphalt 8. I don't care about updates or custom roms ever since Xposed. Can always stick an AOSP based launcher on top, and that would probably be the first thing I do if I do this device. Don't care about updates that much. My main, biggest gripe of the Huawei is the screen color saturation, they look bland compared to other flagships. Anybody figure out anything to fix that? My Nexus 4 had the same problem, but after using a custom kernel with gamma controls the screen just felt like something else completely. I got spoiled by the beautifully saturated colors of my N4 after calibration, and don't want a bland screen. The Z3 is better in this regard - its not the most saturated screen but its miles better than the mate 7 in that regard. Why can't Huawei calibrate their screens properly out of the box!
Colors are great, Screen doesn't look washed at all. First go and see the phone live in a showroom.
The phone it's not laggy.
But if you are a heavy gamer don't expect to get 10 hours screen on time with neither one. 5-6 hours maybe, and with brightness set on auto.
8 hours screen on time it't the best that I got with mate7( dual sim version).
Sony are not quick to update their phones also, just one month ago they updated z3 to lolipop.
The warmth/colour tone can be adjusted via settings slider
Screen is excellent, my last phone was a z2

I saw the Mate 7 irl for some reason I think it was washed out... maybe it's just my imagination :silly: i'll try to check it out again in a store
In all honesty wait for Mate 8 it will be released soon most likely.
And also I heard news today that Note 5 most likely will be released in July too...
Mate 7 will most likely drop even more in price for that reason It might be attractive for some though.
It still a good phone for the price.
If you wait for a bit more... You can get almost all of the last years flagships for less after july or august.
Sent from my HUAWEI MT7-TL10
Please tell me after Note 5 and mate 8 and D8 what the hell other devices are worth waiting for ?
as what I know there are known.. unless you want an iphone 6s
The reason Note 5 will be released more early is that they want to get it out before Iphone 6s the big version.
Also Samsung have said the development has gone faster the expected with Note 5.
Do you mean paper releases like oneplus1 ?
or the new bezelless oppo find ?

The prices have already come down enough for them to be in my price range for all of last year's flagships, so that doesn't matter to me anymore. Its just these three phones which I have narrowed it down to because of my personal preferences
If some sort of confirmation or leak about a huawei nexus, or mate 8 or oneplus two gets released by the end of June then I think i'll wait if I like, otherwise i'll just take one of these phones, because right now i've been with a Lenovo A706 (some cheap budget android phone that came free with my new laptop) because my nexus 4 crapped out on me a year ago, and this lenovo is horrendously slow, bad battery life bad everything basically
Note 5 (and iPhone 6/6S) will be too expensive for my price range (my price range is ~1700 AED), and I haven't liked Samsung's designs since the S2/Galaxy Nexus, because of the colored, pattern bezels, (just want deep black) which is also the main reason why I won't consider the Note 4, even though it has better specs overall (and that LOVELY amoled screen) and is in my price range. I'm very picky with my devices, because I only change once every 3-4 years.
Huawei Mate 9 have been officially presented, did it meet your expectations will you upgrade to it from your mate 8 ?
For me, it's a No
The pro version is simply too expensive and I personally dislike the front button
The normal version, camera aside, is more software improvement than hardware. For me the double leica camera is not enough reason for changing

Good said, I agree with you, they have done a lot with the software this year, the physical look on mate 9 looks very uninspiring, even their honor 8 looks superior, I would prefer the same back as honor 8.
The camera bump looks disgusting.. it is much about how the camere will live up to the expectations.
I wish it had 3 in one sim/sd slot like they have in some honor devices, most people most use SD card so then they can not use the dual sim functionality.
i am disspointed there is no amoled screen, to be honest I expected 2k amoled this time.. to make it daydream and VR ready.
They could make the smartphone thicker to make bigger battery to compensate for a more high resolution screen and also to get rid of the camera bump.
Personally I have not decided what to buy, it is this against Mi Mix for me, mi mix have **** camera.. that is the main difference..I also think EMUI 5.0 is better in the software department then MIUI.
I wish the price would be little better.
I do not like the Porshe version that much despite the price, 5.5 is way to small, I had a 5.5 before and it is a big difference in experience during the 3 month I had it I bought a tablet, when I get a 6 inch I have no need for tablet.
as I said we will see about the camera.. it is the camera that will decide the true caliber of this device.
if not that Mate series is still one of the very few devices that have an acceptably battery time, not every one want to have a battery back always with you ..
I am extreme heavy user, with a screen on time with about 8 hours per day sometimes more..
I bought mate 8 only about 3 months ago, and I feel if Mate 8 get EMUI 5.0 it would feel reborn again..so not sure how I will do..
I know from past experience the prices of Mate devices are kind of static so there is no reason to wait 6 months to buy it, if you are going to buy it, buy it as soon as possible since the price will not get lower with time.
Just for cpu upgrade, I won't upgrade to Mate 9
Porche edition, out of reach
You should become their designer..hehehe

Not worth for now. Its not Samsung that you HAVE TO upgrade ahahha
Mate 8 still my no.1 !
I am waiting on my Phab 2 Pro to come Tuesday..I have the Mate 8, then got Mi Max, and then got Honor Note 8..sold both of them and went back to the Mate 8 only because of 4G coverage and the Mate 8 is definitely a top phone but I wanted a bigger phone that have great specs as well as full LTE coverage..I can honestly say the Mate 8 is probably the best phone I ever had
Agree

reasons for upgrading would be restricted to: significantly higher gpu performance / double camera. thats it. and if youre a user focussing on those two departments, u wouldnt have gotten the mate 8 in the first place so its kind of a moot point to go from mate 8 to mate 9, unless ure just OCD about having the latest and greatest while not giving a crap about cost ^^

Too pricey for now. Maybe next year when the price drops. Our Mate 8 will be revitalized once it gets EMUI 5.

I paid 300 euros for this Mate 8 yesterday... it was new..only NXT-DL00... but with your help (thanks again!!) I hope to 'convert' it to an International one... I knew there would be a catch for 300...oh well
Mate 9? Hmm maybe next year when the prices drop hahah... the Porsche Edition is definitely NOT worth it if you ask me, that even makes Apple phones seem cheap lol...
No, because I just bought the 8.
I used the Mate2 for over 2 years, because I thought it was a good value.
When the 8 was talked about last summer, I looked at it, but when the price was announced,
I said nope, too expensive. I waited...
Late this summer, with the 9 coming, I started watching the price on the 8 drop. When it reached a
level I thought for me, was a good value, I bought it.
"But, you didn't get the newest software, newest camera bla bla bla."
So? I ran the Mate2 on JB for over a year before LL came around, and still have LL on it now. Latest
and greatest doesn't concern me. As for the camera on the 9? If I really want to take a photograph,
I'll grab my dSLR. I only use the smartphone camera to record work related stuff, mainly close up
photos. I don't play games on my phone, so super duper graphics pixel peeping stuff doesn't concern
me. Oh, 10 years ago, I flashed every new rom that came along for my HTC phones, but things are
so stable today, that to me, a smartphone is a "toaster oven". You turn it on and use it. I don't bother
rooting or anything else. If stock is stable, I leave it alone.
My phone is my job lifeline. All of my service tickets are done on a web based app, as are remote connections
to the machines I work on and monitor. I'm a field service supervisor, so I'm constantly on the phone with
other techs, and factory reps. Around 2,000 minutes on the phone, hundreds of emails, texts, photos, along
with a lot of streaming audio. It has to be a good value, and have a good battery, which is why I got the
Mate2 when I did.
The 9 looks like a good phone, but it is priced like a lot of "flagships"....to high for reality. In a year, if I've
got an itch for something new, when the mate10 is announced, I'll start watching the price of the 9. If it falls
to what I think it is worth to me, I'll buy one.
No, mate 8 was my first Android after iPhone 3,4 and 5 and lumia 930. I liked the big screen of the mate 8 a lot, but i don't like that googles only reason for making android is user data.
And the apps want way to much permissions.
In may i updated to b320. because i didn't get ota updates and i read articles, stating b320 would be the next ota.
Well it wasn't and i didn't get any update since may.
The going back to mui 4.0 routine, is to much for me, i have so many offline maps on the device for example, that it would take several hours to download them again.
And where to go? There isn't any update for mui 4.1 at all, for six month now.
So the main reasons for leaving Huawei is, that i just see regular updates for other regions in the world and nothing here. L29.
I live in Germany and all companies including, huawei, lg, htc samsung only sell the smaller Ram versions here, like 32 gb and 64 next year if i am lucky.
So i am thinking about a wopping 256 gb iphone 7 plus and never messing with small ram and sd card again.
it looks like Huawei will compete with Mi Mix , wow what a dream, maybe it will be what Mi Mix should have been since it have some flaws..such as bad camera.

No upgrade. The Mate 8 battery life is amazing as it is. Plus, conversion rate to CAD will probably cost $1k after taxes for the top model. If you already own the mate 8, I see no need to upgrade.

When the Honor 8 was announced last summer, I completely overlooked it because so many tech sites and reviewers declared it to be an "also ran" in the $400 flagship category. Many would compare it to the One Plus 3 and Axon 7 and conclude that both were a better buy. Don't get me wrong, both of those phones are nice, but the Honor 8 is smaller, easier to hold, (and arguably better looking) than both of those devices. It simply punches above its weight class and needs to be recognized as the over-achiever that it really is.
Especially after the OP3T ($439) was released, far too often, tech sites claimed it to be THE BEST VALUE IN ANDROID, saying that it was smoother, faster, and cheaper than the rest. It's almost as if they completely forgot about or didn't consider the Honor 8. Once again, the OP3T is a great phone, but it's not such a clear winner in terms of value at that price.
The Honor 8's Kirin 950 is stupid fast and very energy efficient. The dual cameras produce superior images to both the OP3T & Axon 7, and it's fingerprint sensor is probably the most feature packed and versatile of the three devices. Basically, when you ignore specs on paper and focus on the real world usage, the Honor 8 deserves way more love than it's been getting. Plus, it can be had for as low as $250 these days which is a STEAL for this level of performance and quality.
It wasn't until I did my own research and tried the device in person that I finally reached this conclusion. Why weren't the other tech sites and reviewers able to do the same?
/rant
Totally agree. For it's price it's probably the best you can get for your money in 5.2" screen category.
I would argue that it even bests newer offering from huawei (p10 lite).
Having had my Honor 8 since December 2016 and running dual sim plus a micro SD card this phone does the job very well for my needs. Battery life in real usage easily get (Twin App Whatsapp) Instagram, web browsing and calls on both lines and on 4G Data gets me through the day no problem with room to spare.
Yes it's a well balanced phone in looks and functionality and there are a couple of things I dislike but that's like any device or brand.
Having been a hard core Samsung Android User The Honor 8 is well over looked by many.. All my other android devices all been rooted by myself but the Honour 8 I have kept original apart from the firmware updated B380.. Some say this phone is heavy compared to Samsung S5, S7, but at time I panic thinking I've misplaced my device but yet it's in my pocket.. Excellent phone and from a flat battery to full charger under an hour that good for me..
Stunning device is the Honor 8
Thank you guys for pointing out some of the great qualities of Honor 8.
Personally, I'm sick of always reading rants whenever I enter this forum. It's nice to see someone focusing less on getting the newest firmware and on how their 100% awesome battery life dropped to only 80% awesome after update.
It's a great device and considering that I bought it for a song I can't complain. I'm heavily satisfied!
I am glad that someone made a positive review about the Honor 8. Personally if people would just let the phone be and stop going root/beta testing crazy with this phone then they would have less problems. I have been a Honor 8 owner for about 6 months now and I do not have any problems with it. In addition it have the best camera out there by far from the mid range phones category!
The one video that finally convinced me to get the H8 was a performance comparison to the S7 or/and the iphone 6/7, cant actually remember. But it was actual use not the retarded Benchmarks.
And in that category, at the time of release it blew everything else out of the water and it did not disappoint so far.
Although no one around here really complained about that as far as I know. Its the software, it always has been.
Thanks to Huawei Ive been stuck on their EMUI for about a year, and as much as I can say that in some respects it did very well, i never wanted it and never asked for it in the first place.
And as good as the Hardware can be the software is what I am going to use and this will definetly be my last Huawei device until they change that software policy.
Regardless, the hardware is top notch, especially for the low price ( and i paid 350€, and that still applies at that price )
Tech sites slammed it because of EMUI, which was extremely shortsighted. I've said many times in here, I've been using CyanogenMod since Android 2.2, I've owned Nexuses, and even still I'm completely okay with EMUI.
There is no better price/performance device out there right now. And the camera blows away other value flagships.

True, I'll admit that in the brief time I used UMUI 4, I found myself looking for ways to add features that it was missing. But I only had it for a day before updating to EMUI 5 and it along with Nougat seemed to solve almost every complaint I had. It's amazing how much a difference it made, so I guess I can understand how the reviews seemed a little unimpressed.
Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Huawei Mate 10, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Huawei Mate 10 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.

Mini review
Camera: poor. Nearly every photo looks like an oil painting
Screen: lovely
Speakers: great but a tad boomy
Battery: on average I'm getting 6 hours after each charge which is great compared to my 3 on the Nexus 6p
Speed: no issues at all
---------- Post added at 09:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
Forgot to mention that the charging speed is incredibly quick
Camera: love it, in pro mode you can do whatever you want tho, and also shoots in RAW
Screen: good colors but i hate pentile grid, and usable for vr but 1080p or FHD+ is not enough
Speakers: good stereo effect when is on orizontal, but losses fidelity at max volumes
Battery: very good, similar to my old Mi MIX (4400mah)
Speed: Fast AF for real
Storage and Memory: not "PRO".....
6GB ram is good but other flagships have 8GB,
128GB storage is good too, but again, my old Mi MIX have 256GB.
Design: love it
USB-C: FULL support, you can plug whatever you want there, docs, hdmi, another phone, pendrives, mini fan, other charger, mouse, keyboard, name it. ( my Mi MIX dont support hdmi over USB-C for example)
Honestly I absolutely love this phone. I've got a Mate 10 pro BLA-L29 international on T-mobile.
Pros:
Battery. Check my post in the battery thread, fantastic. 8.5-9+ hours SOT with light-moderate usage, 6.5+ on the conservative side for heavy usage.
Screen is really pretty. Honestly the 18:9 OLED 1080p screen is super nice regardless of the normal mate 10 having a QHD panel. I'd say it is a very well built screen
Quick. The kirin 970 has been fast and haven't had any glitches or even odd stutters
Having oreo is great, and MIUI has been pretty swell in my experience. I've seen a lot of hate on it so I was a bit nervous, but honestly it just gives you a lot of different options in the settings I feel like. Personally as someone that likes to tinker with their device but doesnt feel like rooting, I like being able to tweak every aspect of the phone to the extent of the vast number settings.
Cons
Really the only one I can think of currently is software stuff. I hate not being able to expand notifications from the lockscreen and idk why it doesn't let you do that. Idk if it'd an oreo thing or a MIUI thing but I hope it gets fixed in an update because I'd hope that wasn't intentional.
Will add more as I think of them
Things I don't have enough credibility to critique :
Camera. I don't take a ton of photos apart from things like snapchat or the occasional normal photo of my pets, but in my usage the cameras have been great. I'm not going to say I'm am avid photographer though so I won't pretend I know more than I do with how good it is for someone more into professional photography
Coming from note 8. Actually usinf both as daily drivers and Huawei really have a loooong way to go
I am not talking cameras or battery but user experience, smoothness and UI. It's like comparing an iPhone with a 2015 Android phone
Hope this device is getting better with updates

it's truly a homerun. Sound out of the 3.5mm headphone jack is GREAT.

Yes I agree. Battery life. Camera maybe speakers
But I am talking about UI smoothness and user experience. Note 8 is much smoother in animation and the UI is much useful. As in the miniapps the apps windows. The applications are much better optimised for example TubeMate.
The default apps In general, calendar calc phone messenger files etc are much much better on Samsung
By the way where I live mate 10 pro is more expensive than note 8

Its for both mate
I have had my mate 10 for over a month now and to be honest I think my mate 9 is a better phone, I really don't think the front fingerprint sensor is anywhere near as good as the mate 9 rear one and the phone is just not as smooth to operate with random delays in apps opening or freezing.
Mate 10 pro has the best battery you can get right now in my opinion. The camera can take good photos. It is very fast and has plenty of ram. On the other hand it has bad video, bad audio and old fashioned ui.
Just tried the Emui desktop by connecting my M10PRO to a TV with a USBC-HDMI cable. It works quite well.
Nice to be able to watch Netflix on a hotel room TV directly from the phone.
Will try other out more apps/stuff on the desktop interface to see if it's useful for more than media.
I hope that Huawei will develop a system similar or similar to Knox ™ or Secure folder, since the Mate series is a direct competition to the Galaxy Note, which are 100% focused on work and also have a user focus with BYOD
Just got the Mate 10 Pro the day it hit Best Buy, a few day ago. Haven't bothered rooting yet because truthfully it doesn't need it.Im impressed with the overall quality.Extremely fast and stable. High 212k Antutu score. Thumbs up on this one.
mate 10 , very good camera , good battery , nice design , incredible fingerprint , very good price
Anyone watching the keynote? I really love my mate 9 but I'm already doing my financials, mate 10 Pro on the way!!!
I prefer mate 10 with the headphone jack and microsd card slot. Also I don't really like the 18:9 ratio... but I still need time to consider.

I really want to see the LTE band support of the Chinese model. I need Band 41, and for some reason even though they had support for it for non-Chinese Mate 9's, they don't for Mate 10's.
Regardless I have to buy one. After all, my business depends on it
The new mate 10 versions are a disaster. If they combined them into one phone at the price of around 600 bucks it would kill all other phones like this just meh.

Yes.
I don't know what they were thinking for those design/specs/features decisions.
No matter which one you take - Mate 10 or Mate 10 Pro, there are trade-offs that are not acceptable - at all.
I will keep checking on xdadevelopers to see everyone's feedback on the Mate 9 with Oreo (once that is rolled out).
Based on that, I may go pick up a Mate 9.
Otherwise, I have money that I had (planned) to spend on a Mate 10 (16:9 version) - but now, I am not sure it is worth it.
One last thing. Why on earth did Huawei go and place the fingerprint sensor on the FRONT of the phone ???
Too many compromises for me to swallow - if I am expected to pay flagship prices for this.

Mate 9 is good if you can get it for a good price. I wouldn't pay more than 400 for mate 9. The biggest advantage this phones have is their battery and on this 1080p display on mate 9 it will last u 7 hours min. No other phone can do that. Software support is lacking even though you really don't need the newest all the time since there will always be bugs and flaws. Gaming is great even if the GPU is weaker then it's competition. Display is good on accuracy but you need to play a bit with it and set it more to red tint zone since it is naturally set to too much blue. Overall good phone with it's flaws like any other.
..
When the Mate 9 came out, I wanted to go for the pro cos of the amoled screen, but disliked it for two reasons (front-facing fps and smaller screen size). Now, I wanted to go for the mate 10 and they switch the location of the fps.
I'm in a bind;
1. I hate fps on front so it has to be the pro for me
2. As an audiophile, I love wired headsets (pro doesn't have it) so, Mate 10
3. I want a 6GB ram
4. I want an oled screen but just found out that the Mate 10 screen has 499 ppi while the pro has 402 ppi which means that the Mate 10 is sharper but the pro has more vivid colours.
This leaves me in a conundrum cos each phone has something I dislike and like.
I would have loved the pro as it is, with its features but have a 3.5mm audio jack, and at least a 499ppi
I feel all what you feel? Idiot decisions. I really don't know which one to go for? And it's making me dislike both. Damn
Over all I think there many nice, some subtle, improvements. Worry a little about the AI. Especially as data is gathered about you.
My Chinese version of Mate 9 has 6GB ram. Will there be a similar Chinese Version of Mate 10? Don't know why only offer 4GB Mate 10.
How does performance compare for 4GB vs 6GB on Mate 9? Not interested in pro version. Hate 18:9 ratio. Too thin. More like candy bar...
Might get Mate 10 although not currently offered in US.
Unbelievable, after hyping it up so much, this is the best Huawei can do. I love the mate 9 and was looking forward to the Mate 10 but with all the [email protected] they are doing with this release, I probably will wait till next year for something better. I got to say this is one of the more disappointing releases ever.
To be honest, i came here to see the opinion of mate 9 users about mate 10, because i thoughts it is really bad... i was thinking between note 8 and mate 10... but after seeing mate 10, i was really disappointed. tho, i appreciate the speed and performance, but also not on the behalf of features. who needs so fast smart chip if it is not going to be used or not enough features to use it.
i might probably go for note 8.

There will be a Mate 10 version with more storage and more RAM released in China. Not sure if there will be a 256 but there will be a 128/6 at least from what I hear. So you could buy a Chinese one and rebrand it, and it would solve #3 at least.
Happy that I got my Mate 9 for $500. Although the Mate 10 is tempting, The pricing of the mate 10 is ridiculous
I actually like the new designs but won't get it. The mate 9 is still a great phone.
The mate 11 will be my next mate imo.

Funny, that's one of the things that would make me want to switch to the Mate 10. Mate 9 was the first phone I've had with a rear sensor. It's just not as natural to me as a front sensor, especially when it's sitting near me on a desk. Having to pick it up just to get to the sensor is a PITA. I haven't read much about the Mate 10, but if they did the thing where the sensor replaces all of the on-screen controls (swipe to go back, etc.), that would be great. Though it would still take a lot more than a new fingerprint sensor to get me to upgrade phones.
Picking between the Mate 10 and 10 Pro, seems like the Mate 10 is the best value. If you can live without wireless charging and fps on back of phone, and, resign yourself to the likelihood that development will likely be slower than some Qualcomm based phone, the Mate 10 is probably the best all round Android phone out there. If you know of a better one please chime in and say why!

HOPEFULLY the era of overpriced phones is hitting its peak. Already I've heard many say they are skipping the iPhoneX because of the price. I think the silly price of phones, considering each phone within the past few years is basically the same as last years model, with sideways improvements, or gimmicks. First words out of most presenters mouths when shown is "colorful, stylish, slim".
Who cares. Apple was the really screwy one putting SLICK glass on the BACK of a phone, that many people will put a case on anyway, or, run it naked, drop it and shatter the front AND the back.
At least Huawei has kept the 4,000mAH battery from the Mate2, through the 10. If they would have kept the price down a bit, they could clean up. I'm not one of the "gotta buy the latest/greatest" because I find a better bang for the buck, of buying last years latest & greatest thing, typically for 1/2 price.
Then you'll hear the "but you won't get the latest updates"....For me, it doesn't matter. Heck, in my experience, except for kit-kat, everything from Jelly Bean on up has been stable enough that I had no need to root, hack, custom flash my 3 Huawei phones.
