Notifications Late, Duplicate, etc - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi all,
First off, yes, I did post this in another forum, but it hasn't gotten much attention over there... Perhaps this is only specific to Samsung and/or S8, so I'm posting here too.
I have a new Galaxy S8 and am having major issues with notifications. The key applications I am noticing issues with are Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, and Hangouts.
I am getting notifications for all of these apps very late, and when they arrive, it is usually all at once for each app. Then, I will keep getting the same notifications after they have been cleared almost every hour.
Gmail recently stopped giving me notifications at all, and my Gmail app doesn't show recent e-mails like it isn't Syncing. Sometimes a refresh will show new messages.
Here's what I've done:
- Settings -> Notifications -> Advanced | Enabled for these apps. I actually haven't disabled notifications for any apps.
- Settings -> Apps -> Special Access -> Optimize Battery Usage | OFF for these apps.
- Settings -> Device Maintenance -> Battery -> Power Saving Mode is OFF. App power monitor is OFF.
- Settings -> Cloud and Accounts -> Accounts -> Google | Accounts are set to Sync Everything. The last synced timestamps are recent.
Do Not Disturb mode is also turned off.
What am I missing? I don't have any task managers that are killing apps periodically either. Some background services like Fitbit, AutomateIt Pro, and TripLog Mileage don't respond to triggers as well.

Tried factory resetting? Maybe that will help. I know it's a hassle..

I found this thread over at Samsung. I've uninstalled the Google App updates... will see how it goes.

[Q] Random apps starting up?

Why when I switch my phone on into Android, loads(about 15) apps are running in Advanced App Killer, such as Myspace, Mail etc, things i've not yet touched on my phone. I close them, but after a few hours i check what apps are running and random apps i've not opened(nor appear on screen) are showing?
Anyone else have this?
I think your apps are opening because you have auto data sync turned on. If you turn off sync of these accounts (mail, myspace) they probably won't be active.

oh thank you, stupid question but where do i find the setting to switch auto sync off?
*****More Info*****
Found it, was in an obvious Accounts & Sync menu, man i feel stupid lol, thanks
From the home screen, puss the menu then settings, go to accounts and sync. Disable auto sync and especially background data. You will definitely notice less apps opening up, but you will have to enable it again if you want to do certain things. I.e. market, gmail etc...

The problem with turning off Background data and Auto-sync is you will lose other useful features, e.g. GMail notification, weather updates, Market app (requires Background data) etc.
I use an app called "Startup Auditor" which allows you to manually turn off the programs you don't want to run upon startup, and additionally, auto-run after startup.
Hope this helps.

Anyone else have problems with lag and constant syncing?

My MT4G is constantly getting more and more laggy. It seems like it lags when the phone is syncing... and it wants to sync all the time. The syncing icon appears in the notifications bar for at least 20 minutes out of every hour. I have tried a master reset and I restart, yes restart, my phone at least once per day to combat the lag... it flies for the first few hours and then the lag sets in... almost as bad as my old G1...
What exactly are you syncing?
It is also possible to change sync intervals on many applications, as well as turn syncing off entirely.
Individually:
Settings > Accounts & Sync> [Select Account] > Uncheck Sync options.
All:
Settings > Accounts & Sync > Uncheck Auto-sync.
I noticed this right after I signed into the "Peep" application...it would not stop syncing..i've tweeted a total of 3 times, and i'm not following anyone, so i have no idea what it was trying to sync..i just ended up unsyncing it in the settings.

Delayed notifications

Dear all,
I have been realized some notifications comes first when I open screen. It includes gmail push emails and my site live chat app.
I think somethings about the sleep policy is wrong.
How can I fix this problem.

Check your battery optimization settings. Some apps don't send notifications when your phone dozes. If you use Greenify and aggressive doze, you can whitelist apps from within the Greenify app. Otherwise it should be available in the "More" menu in the battery stats.

No Gmail notifications after few minutes in idle.

Hi, I recently bought a new moto g5+ and after 1 week I think there is a problem with the Gmail notifications.
If my phone go to idle, after few minutes, it won't receive any gmail notifications.
Only if I wake it up, the mails arrive.
I run some tests and understood it's only after few minutes (4-5 maybe), before this, even in idle it works fine.
the notifications are not deleted if your read the mail en the PC (or outlook for my exchange account) - i thik it's supposed to automatically clean the notification in this case no ?
For whatsapp there is no problem.
I don't use greenify
same behavior if i install an app from the play store on my PC. It won't start to install if i don't wake up the phone
What I did today but it doesn't help:
- reboot
- uncheck and check everything in my GMAIL accounts sync
- reset everything in battery optimization
- the battery saver is off
Do you have any idea (beside a custom rom) ?
Thanks

I know you said you "reset" everything in Battery Optimization, but did you turn off Battery Optimization for Gmail?
Go to Settings - Battery - 3-dot menu - Battery Optimization and change the drop down to All Apps, then find Gmail and tap it and set it to Don't Optimize.
I actually see this a lot with various apps, especially if my phone is in my pocket for a while... When I pull it out and unlock, the notifications flood in from lots of apps.

Screen Wake from FB Messenger

Phone screen just flickers on and off when I get FB notifications. Seems like a glitch.
When this happens, is the phone in vibration mode? Other possibility is that you may have set a screen passcode recently and in the process also enabled hide sensitive notifications and it is possible that it may be interfering for phone to wake up on certain notifications. Are the FB messages from messenger present when you do wake the screen or do they show up right after you wake up the screen? You may have changed the phone sync settings or if you have enabled power saving mode, phone may not be checking for notifications from certain apps or in intervals or both, or if you or another app have disabled facebook messenger from syncing or changed background data settings (for example datally is an app from google helps save data if you don't have unlimited plan but in the process it disables most apps from connecting to internet by default).
I would suggest go in settings, then apps, then tap on three dots on top right, enable 'show system apps', then look for any apps related to facebook, click on each one go to 'storage' then 'clear data'. Make sure you do this for all of them before you go back into FB or messenger. You will have to log in FB again and it is quite possible that this will fix the issue if settings were the cause. (Edit: Try uninstall and reinstall the app). If it doesn't work, and you have checked through all the possibilities above, you may have to do a factory reset, setup the phone again and reinstall FB and Messenger app first then install a few apps at a time to try and catch any apps that might be responsible. One last possibility that i can think of is that it is also possible a recent update to the app by FB may have caused this bug instead of you or your phone.

That's an interesting point you make, because the phone is doing just that - The phone isn't actually vibrating until I hit the screen and wake it. So they're essentially showing up right after I wake the screen. This is despite the fact that the message was sent minutes beforehand, so it would've been received by all accounts. Appreciate the help!

Very likely you have the Battery saver feature turned on. When it is on, among other things, the background activity and data of apps get restricted. I am very sure that this is the cause for the issue you are having. You can either turn off Battery saver mode or add FB Messenger to the Power saving exclusions list to get your FB push notifications back.
Appreciate all the help man!
Great thank you!
