Kodi + External Storage - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey can anyone help me with a fix? I have struggled with limited space on my Nvidia Shield 16gb. So i have usb 3.0 drive to expand storage and to use as internal storage. However Kodi has performance issues and lag if i am using my usb external for storage expansion. Sorry if this has been answered already. Can someone point me in the right direction....is this a simple fix? haven't been on XDA in a few yrs.
Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about a usb flash drive yes it will be slow a better option is using a usb attached hard disk drive

I think it will also depend on which drive you have. Here are some recommended USB flash drives.
https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4334

Yeah i used one of the recommended usb flash drive..the lexar one. I noticed that the overall performance is sluggish. Not only does Kodi lag... navigation around the menus stalls periodically. More freezes (wait/force close) messages.
For now i just move all my data back to internal until i can find a solution

Did you ever find a solution? I just bought a Shield and am experiencing the same thing.

I had the same problem with nvidia and kodi until I bought one
SANDISK EXTREME PRO USB 3.1 SOLID STATE FLASH DRIVE 256gb so far all good I do not see performance delay in kodi nor in the system I have already 3 months using as storage compatibility and everything is still okay so far greetings

I have always had similar lag issues using external mechanical hdd. Usually I just use old laptop hard drives in an enclosure. An odd thing that has also happened is that Kodi has over time (takes about a year) killed my hdd to the point that a PC won't even low level reformat it. I am on my second drive now and after about a year, it is starting to fail as well.
One thing that is very noticeable, and possibly the culprit, is the amount of drive activity going on when Kodi is just sitting idle on the home menu. This is also the main reason I haven't tried an ssd, because if these are write cycles and not just read cycles, I'm pretty sure it will trash an ssd.
I have read in other threads that people using much nicer drives than I am are having the same issue of an eventually dead hdd/ssd. I have a feeling this will also apply to flash sticks as well, so I'd warn to not toss too nice of a drive on there!

[Q] New A500 owner, couple of noob questions

Hi folks, got my A500 refurb for 200 bucks last night. Its mint, and so far awesome. I am coming from a Nook Color as my last tablet so this is a huge jump. Updated OTA to ICS this morning.
Couple of simple questions:
1. How do I turn off haptic feedback? It wasn't on when it was on HC, but in ICS it has it, the vibrate on this thing is strong enough for it to be annoying. I looked under keyboard settings which is where it is on any of my old devices, and its not there, unless I missed it?
2. Does this thing go to sleep if you leave the screen off for an extended period, like shut off the wifi and go low power? my Nook does that, not sure if theres a setting I need to set. I left for work this morning and left it on my desk, on and connected to WiFi, am I gonna come home to 50% battery?
3. Tried the Hero of Sparta game on it last night while still on HC. Played great but the sound was choppy, I have heard some attribute sound issues to Dolby Mobile, is that the case? Should I try again with Dolby turned off?
4. I believe I read that you can't move apps to the SD card with ICS? Is that the case, because I bought an 8gb tab which means I'm gonna run out of space real quick. Can rooting fix that?

1. In sound settings
2. I'd be worried if I came home to find my battery at 50 per cent, you be fine
2. Check advanced wifi settings- can tell wifi when to sleep
3. Cant help with this, experiment and find out
4. Not heard of anyone running out - that usb port comes in mighty handy!!!

Thanks for the tips, I came home and it was at 92 percent
Shutting off Dolby did fix the sound problem
I put a 32 GB micro SD in it. I was concerned games wouldn't install to it, and apparently they don't. I don't have a lot installed and yet I have less than 1.5gb remaining.
Thanks for the welcome

I got a sandisk class 4. It seems to work fine but the fact there's no way to move apps to it makes it a bit useless. I'm not much of a music/movie guy I usually use streaming so media space is wasted on me. Is there a fix for that yet?
app2sd
You might want to try App2sd from the google play store. The app won't move all apps to SD card, only apps that are moveable. So this app won't totally solve your problem but it should help.

Yeah I have that but it apparently doesn't work with ICS. I read somewhere else here someone complained about this as well. The button doesn't even show up to move apps to SD.

A lot of games and other Database apps usually save the Data to the Ext SD Card by default, or give you an option for location. At least what I've come across.

A Class 4 is a hair on the slow side, anyways. You would likely see a real world performance hit running apps off a class 4 card.

Yeah the games do save there, but you can't move the actual app to the SD card which is nice to do. I bought an 8 gb tab and with only about 10 games on there and whatever apps I have I'm down to only 1.5 gb.
EDIT: I am wrong. The games do not save there. If I look in ES File Explorer the /mnt/sdcard folder shows a bunch of stuff, yet when I pull the SD card and put it in my PC, its blank except a couple of android insertd folders. I believe ICS DOES NOT save to the SD card? Can anyone else check? In ES File explorer, the sd card I inserted is shown as folder "external_sd" while theres a separate sdcard folder of which nothing in there is on the sd card.
I am wondering if I can just copy the data to the SD card, delete the "sdcard" folder and rename external to "sdcard"

Class 4 is the go to card on many many phones, the higher classes suffer on performance for many phone tasks which are I/O but work great for recording video or taking pictures. Class 10 especially really is made for digital cameras and actually performs worse than a 4 on a phone/tablet.

USB drive used as adopted storage frequently disconnected

I've connected a 128GB SanDisk Glide USB drive to my Nexus Player and formatted it as internal storage. This worked fine, and I was able to install several apps to it and run them with no problems.
However, when the player is left for a while, it invariably gives an error message saying the drive has been disconnected, and the apps are no longer available. Removing and reinserting the drive brings them back, until a little while later when the same thing happens again. This problem doesn't seem to occur when apps on the drive are being used.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if it might be an issue with a power-saving feature. Moving to an externally-powered USB hub hasn't helped.
I had similar problem, i spent days troubleshooting it with no luck till i got a premium $$ usb drive...problem fixed. Can't tell if that's the root cause though.

Definitely seems to vary by device - a MicroSD in a genric card reader failed in the same way, but an 8GB Verbatim Pinstripe drive seems to be working fine. I'm going to pick up a larger-capacity Verbatim drive and see how that copes - will post an update here, as it may be useful for others to know which drives behave and which don't.

Marshmallow Internal SD problem - apps still use phone internal?

I upgraded my 16GB MXPlay to 6.0 and so far everything has been going great, except I'm having issues with Adaptive storage SD. I chose to format as internal, as when given the option it said this will let me store anything on the device including apps on the SD card, but after formatting and installing some apps I've realized the app installation and storage behavior doesn't seem to have changed since 5.1.1.
For example, if I go install some apps from the play store, they still chew up my internal 16GB unless I manually go to settings and move them to SD storage. In addition, this only works on apps that have built-in support for external storage, and it seems like it only moves the .apk, not any associated .obb files. If I keep installing apps and games, it will eventually (quite quickly actually), fill up the 12 GB internal partion and tell me to uninstall some apps, even though I've got barely 5GB of stuff stored on my Micro SD Card.
Literally all that seems to have changed is that /home has moved to external storage, and everything else stays the same. Am I missing something, or is the merged storage option for Marshmellow Moto X Play not all that merged?

It's an Android 6.0 problem. Don't flash your card as internal. Installed apps would always install on internal storage. Just try to move every other thing like songs and images to external timely. Also use a cache cleaner to remove cache.

So it basically doesn't work? Got to say that with a 16gig X Play it was the main reason for an upgrade to 6 (MM). Is this just on the Play or common to all devices running 6?

If at all possible, don't do it. I bought a class 10 UHS 3 microsd card (95MB/s read 45MB/s write). In the Moto it maxes at 55MB/s read and less than 8MB/s write. Compare to the internal @ 110MB/s read and 66MB/s write. The sdcard controller in the phone isn't capable of high speed read/write. You are seriously gimping your performance using a sdcard as internal memory.
I did try it once though, and it saw my internal memory and sdcard as one unit. I strongly recommend not going this route if you can avoid it.

Thanks for info. I have a dual sim French Moto X Play. I'm in the UK but it's possible to buy them off Expansis. I downloaded the Indian Marshmallow 6 OTA off the thread here. Put it on the sd card and the phone picked up the update. Updated last night and all seems to be fine. I decided to give the adaptive storage option a try (before reading your reply) and so far it seems to work ok. My Play is a little tight for onboard storage due to Pioneers Avicsync app which with the maps of Europe gobbles a fair chunk up. Avicsync is a companion app for a Pioneer Avic F-77DAB head unit in my truck. Anyway Android 6 seems to be working very well and no issues. I guess I can reverse the adaptive storage if I need to but for now I'll see how it goes and report back here if there are any issues.

You are wrong mate, the MXP is capable of fast writes on the SD card, it just needs to be the right SD card.

That's strangely low internal read speed. But I do like your sd write speed.
I have had internal read and write speeds all over the place mate, i had an internal write speed of 11MB the other day, never had an internal write over 70MB though.
What is the app for used above for benchmarking sd card?
I had a a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB and my Play was constantly "unexpectedly discounted sd card". A reboot or pull sim tray out and back in again solved it for a while. Then bought a SanDisk Extreme Pro U3 64gb and never had the issue again.
Only problem I've had with adaptive storage was SwiftKey unable to do predictive text - check sd card. I uninstaled and installed again and now working fine.
I say only issue, what I really mean is up until now the only issue. Early days so I'll see how it goes.

THe prob with Swiftkey reappeared - predictive text stopped working. Don't know if it's a MM or adaptive storage problem but suspect the latter. I'm now using Fleksy instead as i've used it in the past. It seems to work fine.

Do you have any sources that say it's an Android 6.0 problem? I have the exact same problem as the OP and it doesn't make sense that this problem occurs. I made a post on android.stackexchange.com about this issue, and even Motorola's official documentation say it should work.

I just am not sure about this but since the adaptive storage came with Android 6 and since then it has started occurring. It's not necessarily a problem. The device decides where to install an app and keep its data in Android 6 at least for moto x play.

It seems the SwiftKey Team works very slow. Ive wrote them (i'm a beta Tester) first in middle December bout the Problem. It helps to change to switch the Keyboard (icon lower right) to default keyboard and back to SWK. Sometimes it works over Weeks without a problem. It's only happens after a device reboot and SD is set to intern/adaptive.
The bad thing is Google Music. It saves the Music on the real Space. Cant understand why Google fix it yet.
Some folks are very angry bout Android 6 portable SD permissions. You cant move apps to SD when the Card is set to portable. It's bad while using a Car Navigation like sygic. Atm you cant put the (big) Mapfiles to the SD. But i know the devs are working on a fix. Sygic said it will work the next beta.
At the Moment i use the adaptive intern Storage... But i hope Google will put some hands on this. It feels it isnt not 100% ready.
There is something wrong with the SD Speed Format-test too. Sometimes it shows "the card is to slow"! When trying to Format the same U3 again and again it works like magic.
Btw: There are many Users (with fast SD cards) in the offic Motorola Forum with this Problem.

On Android 6.0 stock for MXP Spotify saves to Sd when you the Sd card as removable storage. Only thing to to is to give spotify permissions to use the storage - checked and it works. It is very similar to 5.1.1 .Not on Bliss ROM - no matter what i do. Maybe it's something to do with 6.0.1 permissions or rom itself .
Yeah Google music saves too on SD as portable (when set in the Options). But it saves it only on real intern when SD is set to intern. That's a joke! Who wants the Music on a 1-2 gb free intern (like the 8gb moto g3) instead of a 16-128GB intern SD card ?
It feels half finished... There are so many (Google) Apps out there they are not Android 6 adaptive SD ready.
But is indeed nothing new... SD card permissions...
With Android 6.3 its ready. And we see something new with Android 7. (i hope not) grr
Gesendet von meinem XT1562 mit Tapatalk
If you do a clean install of MM and before you do anything else you set the SD card as internal then any app that can be moved to the SD card will install on it by default. Any app that cant be installed to SD will install on the internal memory as usual.
If you dont do a clean install then you can uninstall apps one by one and as you reinstall them they will install to the SD card, if you just move them to the SD card then when the app updates it will install its self back to the internal memory.
Seems the Swiftkey Devs cant find a solution... https://vip.swiftkey.com/index.php?...d-m-when-moving-sk-to-sd-bug-reported/&page=4
Well I use swiftkey so it'll be a bummer if that doesn't work for me. Hmm.
I've just bought myself a nice shiney new 32gb u3 card to pop in and use as adaptive (bored of running out of space now) (16gb version).
One thing I need to check though, hopefully someone who has used as adaptive will know.
I have an app (bbc good foods) which has data of cookbooks. I got them when they were free but now they charge. The only way I found to back them up was to go into phone memory when hooked to a pc and copy them.
When I've bought new phones I've then copied them back to the right folder.
I know adaptive wont let you see the sd contents from a pc, so would someone be able to confirm whether they can explore their SD / memory with something like ES file explorer when they've done adaptive storage? If so can you, say, download a file from google drive and then move it to a specific location.
Thanks

Mi A1 - new SD card showing double size than it is

Hello,
I just purchased a 64gb micro sd (samsung evo plus) card and inserted it into A1; formatted it as permanent storage, and now it shows as 128gb with half space used with system files. Tried reformatting on the laptop and doing it again in the phone, same result. As far as i can tell, it still works (still 64gb free), but it is annoying as it shows system is using half, so you dont have the real numbers.
I tried googling, found similar problems (a year ago), but no follow up how/if this is resolved. Im running latest 8.1 (november patch).
Any help / ideas?
thanks,
Jaka
After formatting you need to select an SD card as an external memory and then you will have a real state
All of this is done in the seting> memory setting
permanent storage is an extension of internal storage so all correct.
Thanks for clarifying. What is the difference between permanent/removable storage in terms of what the phone can store on it? My phone is full and need the extra space for pictures, cache (streaming apps burn a lot) and, if the card is good enough, apps.
thanks guys, always appreciate the support here on XDA!

I don't' like an SD as an extension of internal memory, it becomes non removable and if it gets corrupted can cause serious problems with apps crashing. It also needs to be as fast as possible.
I would rather have it set as external/removable, you can still store all your media (music photo video etc) on it but it remains removable and the system does not reply on it.
Hey guys, a bit of an update.. Today a got a notification that i am running out of space, a few days after I have inserted a fresh 64 gig card (first post), but now take a look at these screenshots .. In a few days, my whole storage shows as 100% full, just with system files .. ?
I also do not see this extra space in root explorer (where can I?)
Can someone help with this issue? What is going on here?
Cheers,
Jaka

Shield pro with Samsung SSD - Storage Problems after 7.2 upgrade

I own a shield pro 2017.
I changed the SSHD with a Samsung EVO 860 SSD (lowlevel cloned from SSHD) some weeks ago.
Did nothing else. No rooting or bootloader opening or whatsoever
The shield was fast as hell before updating to 7.2.
Now it has MASSIVE problems with access to the internal drive.
It takes nearly half an hour to install an app.
In system settings, the internal storage is shown, but going to see the details it takes a very long time , also.
On the other hand, apps will start and play music and video files from the internal storage.
I have a lot of mp3 and aac music files on the storage.
It looks like a Process i do not know is running on the internal storage and taking the performance.
I stopped plex and emby server (had both on it to test which one is better for me) but no changes.
What can I do to get the performance back ??
I have no clue atm.
And what would happen if I put the Original SSHD back into the device ? It has 7.1 on it.
Well - I do not know which step is best to resume the issue.
Waiting, complete reset or something else ?
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE A NVIDIA SHIELD 16GB RUNNING 7.2 ANDROID.
I BOUGHT A Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) TO BE USED AS ADDITIONAL STORAGE TO RUN MY PLEX SERVER. I HAVE MY MEDIA FILES IN MY SYNOLOGY MOUNTED AS NETWORK STORAGE BUT WANTED THE PLEX TO HANDLE ALL TRANSCODING LOCALLY.
1)
I SET THE SSD AS A DEVICE STORAGE.
SHIELD FORMATS IT WITH NO PROBLEM AS ADOPTED INTERNAL STORAGE AND ENCRYPTS IT BUT AFTER A WHILE THE SHIELD BECOMES EXTREMELY SLOW IN RESPONSE. USING THE REMOTE TO BROWSE THROUGH THE MENU AND SELECTING APPS IS EXTREMELY SLOW.
2)
I RESTORED THE SSD TO FROM DEVICE STORAGE TO EXTERNAL STORAGE AND AFTER A WHILE THE SAME BEHAVIOR DESCRIBED ABOVE ON 1) HAPPENS.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SSD THOUGH. IF I FORMAT ON A PC IT WORKD JUST FINE, NO FLAWS. I INSTALLED THE MAGIC SOFTWARE FROM SAMSUNG IN THE PC AND TESTED THE BENCHMARKS AND IT IS JUST FINE.
I BELIEVE THERE MIGHT BE OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AS WELL.
ANY CLUES ? ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

I have a lot of mp3 and aac music files on the storage.
It looks like a Process i do not know is running on the internal storage and taking the performance.
I stopped plex and emby server (had both on it to test which one is better for me) but no changes.
What can I do to get the performance back ??
I have no clue atm.
And what would happen if I put the Original SSHD back into the device ? It has 7.1 on it.
Well - I do not know which step is best to resume the issue.
Waiting, complete reset or something else ?

Most recent update is to blame I am sure, mine won't even startup now, was acting funny. I never did the SSD swap but I think I may to get it back up. I think the update is to blame for many problems.
Anyone have any luck yet? It's the 2015 Pro BTW. Just flashes green every time I touch the power on for one second but does nothing. I can hear the HDD spinning inside and it's not making any weird clicks or noises like a dying hard drive would??? Lost!!!
