I'm not entirely sure what caused it, and I've tried everything I can think of to reset it but nothing seems to work. My Daydream View remote/controller doesn't seem to do anything but recenter when holding any button, and does nothing when pressing any button.
When any VR app starts Daydream kicks in and hijacks it, even if it's not a Daydream app (including players), even if Daydream is disabled and all its data wiped (VR services is still there), it asks you to hold to home button while pointing forward to recenter begin. Except that doesn't work anymore so no VR app works.
At this point so it doesn't hijack non-Daydream apps I'm going to try uninstalling VR services so it ****s off. But if anyone can point me to how I can get the Daydream controller working, I'd be grateful.
Edit: Wiping VR services and reinstalling it seems to have it working so far. That couldn't have been done without root, I guess any average user who runs into this problem is SOL, just like the few search results of similar issues I found. Always root your phones kids.
But honestly, for non-Daydream usage, it's better off to uninstall all of it so your battery doesn't get lit on fire. Removing all of Goolag's BS will result in the phone running whatever VR video or app normally instead of having their Daydream/VR services running + NFC + Bluetooth + GPS + other BS they have running which makes the battery hit 50 ****ing degrees Celsius in 20 minutes rendering "Daydream" useless.

I guess you can uninstall the updates wthout root, then update. or download an apk and reinstall it. But yeah, not as surefire as root

That was the first thing I did since it could be done directly without an app like Titanium Backup (which is what I ended up using), but that didn't work. Fixing the bug required a full uninstallation of Google VR services.

Woke up this morning to my S7 Edge being extremely hot. I immediately took it off the charger because I thought the battery was maybe overheating, but it now appears to be a CPU usage issue. It will not go below 50% usage (often staying at 90-98%. The phone is continuously hot and battery drains ~1%/minute without usage. I have tried restarting the phone multiple times without change. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Update: the issue appears to stem from an Oculus automatic update. Uninstalling the Oculus app solves the issue. Read more here: https://goo.gl/Mt5FJy (thanks AVKillah)
High CPU and battery drain
I woke up to the same thing this morning. Phone running hot (processor-based problem, not the display or the charger). Have rebooted several times. It doesn't help. I can't find the offender app. Android processes are taking up most of the battery usage according to the battery monitor. This has never happened before.
Anyone have a fix?
Same here! Just late last night before bed.
The phone is running hot, lagging, keyboard constantly closes.
Trying to install anything hangs forever. Reboots and ram clears are not helping.
Haven't tried full cache wipe yet
Already tried full cache wipe through recovery. No change. Thinking about factory resetting but I have so many settings that would be wiped out...
Ultra power saving mode helped. Don't know if it's temp yet but at least while i was in it and for the moment since i just came out

Ultra power saving mode did help too. Booting in safe mode was also a solution for me, but you can't use any apps in safe mode so it's really pointless. It's also hard to narrow down the problem since I haven't downloaded an app in weeks and the only thing hogging resources is the android system.
I'm having a similar issue with performance and phone running hot. I am suspecting it is related to the PH1 update (noticed you have it as well). Device has been performing very poorly lately .
Factory reset has so far resolved the issue. May be related to PH1 update as I took that a couple days before this issue occurred. Will keep this thread updated if problems reappear.
So for the others affected is it all the same?
I havent taken any updates or changed my rom.
Nothing that changed that i can think.
Just that we all started experience this either this morning or before falling asleep?
I am having the same problem. It started this morning. I thought it was the copy of "Disconnect Pro Privacy and Performance" I got from the Galaxy App Store, but it persisted after uninstalling that. In the battery usage last when you select "Android System" it shows a list of the processes, and GearVR was on the top.
I tried to log in, but if forced an Oculus update which just hung on the install. I uninstaled all the VR stuff I had and froze the Gear VR Services app. That seems to be the culprit for me. It just kept trying to install an Oculus update that wouldn't go.
Phone is back to cool and normal battery drain so far. Will update if that changes.

Hmmm. I did notice an oculus update. And that annoys me cause it auto updates and i dont think you have control cause the other parts i have auto updates off.

Apparently there is an article or few about it.
Apparently it is as AJswimmer described with the oculus update

Fun fact... I woke up this morning and because I hadn't disabled the "Gear VR SetupWizardStub" and "Gear VR Shell" as well they had auto-reinstalled Oculus and it, in turn reinstalled a bunch of VR apps. After re-uninstalling things again and freezing the last couple VR things my phone is continuing to run cool and with back to normal power drain levels.
Yeah apparently it is Oculus. Uninstalling mine.

Anyone having issues with Waze? I am on A2017G B08.
I can't move on map using my finger to pinch in and out and I can move the map sometimes.... Tried reinstalling it does not work... I use Google maps and it is fine and I don't think its a hardware issues.
I use Waze ever day. Had never issues with it.
Do this in the settings > app manager for Waze:
1. Force stop the app.
2. under Storage, Clear cache and then Data
3. Uninstall Waze
4. Reinstall waze from Play Store
This should fix your problem. Let us know.

Tried, still having the same issues.... It was ok for the first then I restarted my phone then this issues come back again... I am thinking it was being messed up by the power management.

People have complained about the power management screwing things up before. The power management APK is safe to remove if simply disabling "Smart Power" in the pull down doesn't work for you. Hopefully a fix will be coming in this months update.
No problems here with Waze with or without power management. Make sure Waze has all the permissions it needs. Or maybe a third-party app is interfering.
I also have no issues with waze and use it 5 days a week on the job. I have a bone stock axon 7.
Hey all,
So I've had my S8 since launch and I've enjoyed it but I have an issue that I've been trying to pinpoint the cause of for a few weeks now. At a high level, if I reboot the phone in the morning, I can use it all day as I wish and it works perfectly, no slowdown anywhere and good battery life. I plug the phone in at night when I go to sleep and when I wake up I start using it again. Either right after I wake up or over the course of a few hours the phone begins to slow down with things like notification shade/app switcher crawling until I either a) reboot or b) change display resolution. Doing either of these "fixes" it until the next night and then again when I wake up I have the same issues.
I've been trying to figure out what's causing this. I've tried disabling features, uninstalling apps, etc.
One thing I have found is that when I'm having this problem if I force close 'System UI' in App Manager (this is just restarting that process since you can't kill it really) the smoothness comes back but it doesn't last as long as when I either reboot or change resolution.
My theory is that something is conflicting with the Android UI and over time it's causing it to slow down. Rebooting or changing display resolution restarts the Android UI so essentially same thing.
My first question is has anyone seen this behavior where the notification shade/app switcher (native UI not apps) slow down? I know there's at least some people on Reddit with same issue. If you have this issue does FC'ing System UI 'fix' it for you temporarily?
I'm trying to figure out what is running on my phone while I'm sleeping at night which is obviously causing this. Any ideas would be helpful. Oh also when I wake up and I go into app switcher it only shows like 3 cards where before I go to bed it would be like 10+ so something is killing apps at night too. I turned off Google backup for today and will reboot before tonight to see if maybe that's it.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks.
I've had my S8+ since the launch weekend on ATT, always connected to my Gear S3, and connected to my Misfit Ray. I've not noticed any slowdown of the UI. My AOD clock is slow to show the hands if the screen is off when I use the numerical clock AOD, but nothing else observed.
I would guess you've installed (or haven't uninstalled/disabled) some apps that are using a lot of background processes. I removed/disabled the few ATT apps on the device except Call Protect, and I don't use Gmail (resource hog). I actually use very few Google apps, they're just not very well coded, it seems (maybe a "goof off" day every week isn't such a great policy?)
In settings, go to Device maintenance, click on battery, and see if anything strange is going on there under App power monitor.
I've NEVER liked Samsung phones, and I've NEVER been interested in owning one, but I saw the Galaxy Gear S3 and fell in love, and truthfully, I bought the phone as an accessory to the watch, so I'm not an apologist for any shortcomings.
Instead of restarting, go to settings/device maintenance, what's the percentage here? go to optimize, does it help? which apps use the battery most? How much RAM is available. If nothing shows up, you probably would need something like wakelock detector (it needs root) to trace apps usage, especially at night. Also you could try to force stop other apps and see which one is interfering? For example phone is slow, force stop first 10 apps, if not fixed force stop next 10, if fixed, next time force stop one at the time from that batch of tens.
Mines just started doing this the other day. I think I have an idea if the problem, I'm just trying to find proof at this point. I recently downloaded this all to let me see the upload/download speeds if my network in the notification bar. It lets you set the refresh rate, to which I set it to 2 seconds, which I knew regardless would tax my system, I just didn't expect my ui to slow to a crawl.
Delete any Bixby remapping app as well, known to cause many issues including unpredictable lag.
Just got this phone 2 days ago after years of nexus /pixel usage. Great phone but the camera freezes my phone about half the time. After launching the camera my phone will become nonresponsive and I'll will have to power cycle it to regain access. Stock rom, stock camera app. This also happens with ported Google pixel cam app.
I've tried factory resetting, clearing cache, and clearing program data several times. Is this an intermittent hardware issue? Should I just return or try exchanging it?
Exactly the same here. On two occasions the phone became responsive again after a few minutes but now is the second time it hangs and I'll have to wait for the battery to drain down.
Did you flash anything? I thought it might be because I flashed a custom kernel, rooted it with Magisk. But I guess not.
Happens on stock Camera app + Google pixel app.
rooted with magisk. everything else stock, stock kernel as well. I was able to force reboot it (vol up + power). but it happens pretty consistently with any carmera app
Same problem here after rooting with Magisk. I don't seem to have the problem with the open camera app.
My front camera is not even functional for me. I can even use face unlock as it says that another system app is using it. Also I can not even swap camera to the front facing camera. I called support and hope to hear something from them on it
I unrooted (flashed stock boot image in fastboot) and the camera freeze issue seems to go away... Pretty strange bug tho
Never realized how many ads there were until you stop using adaway
Try out Blokada! It's an open source ad blocker that uses a VPN to filter out ads instead of he hosts method that AdAway does. It doesn't require root.
I used AdAway for years, but finally switched to Blokada because it's a lot more convenient. You can enable and disable it on the fly and add things to the whitelist when you find pages you actually want to view are being blocked. As you may have noticed in your usage, when that would happen with AdAway, you'd have to figure it out and then reboot because Android doesn't reload the hosts until rebooted.
Please see my thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/help/camera-settings-crashes-t3865560
cool ill check it out... right now using vanced youtube and ms edge browser which has built in adblock. seems faster than chrome
you notice any battery drain from blokada?
I don't. Technically, running a VPN should cause _some_ amount of battery drain, but it seems negligible. My battery usage didn't noticeably change when I started using it.
Hey everyone
I've been having some battery drain that I cannot nail down
It appears to be Google Play services that is the culprit.
It's preventing the device from going to sleep. According to ekxm as of now my wake time is 40%.
This is after a factory reset in stock recovery.
Running OB3 on bluspark
It seems to only really happen when on cellular. Last night before going to bed and not touching my phone for hours it was sitting at like 6%.
I don't know what else to do to track this down.
Any help would be appreciated.

It's anything being backed up?
I've had an issue where WhatsApp and Google photos was backing up, so not really an issue but it annihilates the battery and it is backing up to Google.
If it's Google play services going a bit mental then just uninstall updates or clear data..
If it's restoring or backing up then just let it finish.
PS: After you wiped, I'd avoid installing any kernels just to see what your experience is at stock.
Do you have any other modules installed?
These are the versions I'm using.
No modules at all.
Photos backs up yes.
But why would it do that on cellular. I wiped on Saturday and everything was fine Saturday night and Sunday all day when I was at home. Now that I'm out at work on cellular it does this

Seems you have BBS, ex kernel all watching the battery..
Disable the stats from ex, uninstall BBS, get rid of anything else you don't need.... Leave your WiFi on, let anything finish that needs to finish.
Then once it's settled, let's see then whats at the top of the list in the OnePlus battery stats, no need for an app.
Did you compare Google play store and services versions with the ones I posted?
---------- Post added at 09:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:16 PM ----------
You have a vpn running it would appear.
Any reason for that?
Seems I don't have all the info I'd need to tell you.
Jump back to stock, root by all means but avoid restoring apps and installing kernels, vpns etc. Then reinstall bit by bit.
That's the only real way you're going to find out what's taking your battery.
Seeing as you're using blu spark, I'd say ask the creator of it, good luck with that.

So is probably not the play store, it'll be something you've installed. I've little to no doubt.
As I've said go back to stock, root and then see how you are.

Just leave if for a while, so if any restoring or backing up is going on it'll complete, that's what it sounds like..
Turn off any auto updates or auto back ups for OnePlus and for play store, or diagnostics within apps..
Also make sure you've optimised apps within system settings.
Can't think what else it could be

I don't have anything OnePlus enabled for back ups etc.
All my 3rd party apps are optimized.
This is extremely frustrating. On a device that should be getting me 6+ hours of screen time. I barely get 4 with all this additional drain.
And all this is even after a factory reset. Using the same apps I've always used without any prior issues.

You say it's after a factory reset yet you've gone ahead and rooted again and have all your apps installed and a kernel plus a vpn? It's obvious that what you've installed is causing the problem
Clear the cache and data of your play services, google framework, and play store. Usually of there is something causing an issue for me clearing the cache of those apps is enough to fix the issue.

Adguard (not the adguard vpn, just the local adguard that operates as a vpn) does not drain battery. If anything it reduces battery usage as it uses less data. That is not the problem.

Really? So a process trying to load something over and over again can't cause battery drain? Yes it can....I've seen it before.
I've already stated what needs to be done, it's up to him if he chooses to follow that.

He showed that is something to with Google play services that is causing the issue. Considering that adguard is not connected to Google play services, it has nothing to do with it. Nothing in his images shows adguard as causing an issue. Which BBS would show if it was causing an issue. Your instructions were for a generic problem that someone who hadn't diagnosed the issue might use of they were trying to figure out the culprit. He had the issue diagnosed using BBS as google play services. Adguard does not rely on google play services for anything.

Advert could be linking to a Google play advert or app, I don't know what it is but I've seen drain from an ad blocker before..
My point being why try one thing at a time.. and as I've said several times now, get back to stock and install bit by bit so find the culprit.
Google play links to everything installed, I had already said to clear data, that was one of the first things I said. What you're completely missing is the trigger, he's factory wiped his phone, yet it's reoccurred..
Why would you think they wiping the data to Google play would fix it permanently? You're simply treating a symptom, not the cause.
My instructions were not for a generic problem, in actual fact yours were. You're seeing the problem as Google play whereas that does not reflect the cause. Just the outcome.
Either way, I've given my two cents, do what you will.
Thanks for all the input guys
I had done wipe of storage and caches for play services , store, and everything linked to that.
I think the culprit was ob3
I decided to roll back last night to a10 and then go to staples a11 and the issue appears to not have come back. Even thought I have all the same apps and settings.
So something with play services might not be playing nice with ob3. It could just be me or not. IDK.
At least for now. It's been 12 hours since I loaded stable a11 on and I'm sitting at 1.4 % idle drain according to exkm. This is with 50% wifi and cellular. I'm going to wait a while more before I fully say it's gone until it's been a couple days to regular usage for things to settle
36 hours so far. And all is well so far. At 1.15% idle drain today.
