New Firmware QH1 released 8/30/2017...August Security Update - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 General

330 meg update, Likely just the August Security update. Happy that Samsung and Sprint continue to support this phone.

Few problems before new Firmware N910PVPS4DQH1
2 days before installed on 9/1/17, phone shut down with 23% battery level left or less. Would try to reboot, would not. Attached the charger, battery level remaining would appear. Would recharge fully. Happened 5 times within the last 2 days. Installed new firmware on 9/1/17. Charging was slow. Phone was rebuilt by Samsung plant in TX last year. Replaced motherboard, USB charging port, speaker module, trim edge, new battery and charger. Under warranty, no cost. What's going on?

Exact same issue here with a newly refurb N910P.
I thought I'd read somewhere that an update had fixed the issue.
Trying to find the latest (jul '17?) image. SPRINT site is useless... samsung-updates.com points you to a pay-to-download site.

And my phone was brand new, bought in 7/2015, rebuilt in 2016. Samsung honored the one year warranty and extended 2 extra months. I will see if it will shut down @ 25% battery left. I have a Galaxy Note 3 too. It is a miser with battery mgmt. Note 4 uses more battery than the Note 3. I guess because of the resolution of the screen and has more sensors

So... I take it you have installed all the latest updates (upto QH1), and it's still not registering the battery status properly? Did you try shutting off fast charge?
On a side note... I'm thinking of switching to CM14... I used CM on my trusty Note 3 and it was pretty solid. The N910P Sprint stock software has a couple show-stopper quirks:
doesn't show network activity (up/down arrows)
no option to control CID (i.e. block/hide your CID)

Installed QH1 yesterday. Switched off fast charging already. After it shut down, it will then show the remaining battery level,l when I attach the charger. It may show 13 - 18%. I use both phones for browsing. Another difference between the phones. I have installed Poweramp and deactivated native Soundalive on both phones. Have some Hi-Resolution earphones and with the exact same audio settings, the Note 3 sounds noticeable better, about 15 -20 %.

How old is the battery? They only last about 18 months or 500 charge cycles. You may want to try a new Anker battery, about $15.00 on amazon. When a Note 4 shuts down with battery remaining it is often a failing battery.

Doesn't seem like it's a new thing:
Sorry, xda is preventing me from adding an external link %@$#: forums.androidcentral.com /samsung-galaxy-note-4/610523-note-4-sudden-battery-drain.html
I'm sure that somewhere I'd googled that Samsung released a patch that was supposed to fix this issue though I can't find it again!
On an aside... anyone know if there's a way to fix these two issues that I noted earlier:
no network activity indicators (ie. up/down arrows for wifi activity)
cannot disabled caller ID via settings

23 1/2 hours on single charge

I just got me Evo two days ago, and flashed DamageControl's rom. I don't live in a 4G area, so I have that shut off. I generally don't turn on WiFi or GPS unless I'm actually using them. I did have wifi on a few times yesterday, but for a total of no more than 45 minutes. I have three email accounts, two that update as soon as mail comes in, and one that checks every hour. My corporate and google contacts sync as well as both calendars. I have facebook syncing in the background as well.
I did a decent amount of emailing and some web browsing. Even with all that I went 23 hours and 36 minutes before the battery went red and it told me to charge it.
I was worried with all the horror stories I heard, but that was pretty incredible battery life for my average use of the phone.
Is your battery completely covered in the orange HTC wrapping or does it have spots on the back where you can see the silver underneath?
It looks like it's completely covered. Although I would say it's red not orange. I couldn't tell you which batch it came in as I got it off of Craigslist.

People have reported that battery is better than the ones that aren't completely covered.
I too have the all red wrapper battery, did a 8 hour charge with the phone off prior to this picture.

I did jack **** with mine and was able to squeeze out 28 hours
I usually average 2 days on a charge, usually at least 35 straight hours. Having a second backup battery gives me more than 3 full days.
I think most of the problem lies in how the phone charges the battery; usually it doesn't charge the battery to 100%, but it thinks it has. Some days I get 5 hours out of my phone and other's 12 to 15.
I've tried every tweak I can find and run fresh 1.0.1, too.
I think I'm going to have to buy that 2 batteries and charger for the HD2 on ebay for $10; anybody have that link?

Drocap2 works excellent
I am relatively certain the Evo battery has a break-in period. My first week owning the device I was running:
Voice
SMSPopup
Push Gmail
Push Exchange
3G on / WiFi off
Did some gaming, light browsing, lot of texting, moderate usage over the course of a day.
I got about 8 hours tops before the battery died. That was with the screen brightness at HTC's "medium" level.
Yesterday, I had the same running in the background, did the same things except I also read a bunch using the Kindle app, and used GPS a bit, and I was at 60% after 26 hours off the charger. No special "tricks" like task killers (ew!) or underclocking hacks or startup killers or anything.
Huh...I am not where near getting that much. About to start my fourth week with phone and still in the 12-14 hours.
Are you all doing the charging routine or just plugging in? If I just plug in I definitely only get to about 10pm. If I do the charging routine I can get still have about 30% by evening.
Was someone having issues with the battery life on the Evo??? Cause I'm not.

[Q] Battery Life after recent software update

Has anyone noticed any significant decrease in battery life after applying the recent update issued by Verizon a couple of days ago? My Fascinates battery life was actually impressing me tremendously before the update, and it seems to have taken quite a big hit since the update. Just wondering if my case is isolated, or if others are seeing the same thing.
How many hours are you getting? My battery life always lasted around 13-15 hours even before the update which is still pretty short imo. I wonder if I have a defective battery. I turn everything off and brightness to the lowest but it's always around 13/14 hours when my phone dies completely.
My battery life has definitely takin a hit...

There's an UNCONFIRMED rumor floating around over on Android Central that Verizon and Samsung have pulled the update due to problems. Again, this is unconfirmed, and just a rumor, and makes NO mention to the reasons why. Perhaps the battery life is a more wide spread issue.

Well, isnt that special.
Took me forever to apply it manually and now it might be borked, great
I didn't really have a problem with the battery life after this update, but I did notice a signifigant loss of speed when going to websites or watching Youtube.
I installed the update by reverting to stock and updating, and then re-rooted and re-applied the lag fix, and of course re-removed bloatware. I can report that I have noticed no difference at all on data transfer performance, and also no battery life issues. In fact, when I got home from work today, I looked at my battery gauge, and it was still at 87%. That's after almost 12 hours of mostly standby time, with gmail, corporate email, and weather services updating regularly. That's actually the best battery life I've seen out of this thing yet. If your battery is draining faster than that, then you must have some kind of process or background service that's not letting the CPU sleep, which will drain your battery fairly quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if the culprit is one of the bloatware apps that I disabled.
On a side note, I still seem to have an issue where the data connection intermittently cuts out. I don't lose the 3G icon, and have plenty of signal, but it's like the connection just times out, and a few seconds later resumes again. I was hoping the radio update in DI01 would address this, but no dice. I'm actually suspicious that it's an issue in the OS itself, as I've seen similar behavior over WiFi, which is a completely separate radio and network interface. I hope it's just a software bug, not a hardware defect. If it persists after the Froyo upgrade, I plan on doing a warranty claim.

You should be able to redo the original root procedure as documented here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
Note that some have reported that they had to do the root procedure twice after installing DI01 to get root access back, though it worked the first time for me.

Yeah I have done it probably 7 times to no avail.... :/
It freezes my phone i believe after it sents the second restart command. it comes up with device not found, even after it says it was successful....
I also tried the original version of this program (i believe), but it is the one I used to root it the first time.
I bought the phone on the 25th and got the update within minutes of leaving the store. I got great battery life the first day but it's been more standard fair so far getting 13-14 hours with moderate usage.
I unplugged my phone about 12 hours ago. I have used it all day for email, text and phone calls and I am right now at 64%. I am getting great battery life with this phone, loads better than my droid 1 and 2.
Reinstall the Samsung drivers. I had to do that and then root was achieved again. I'm an employee of Vzw and haven't heard any rumors of the update being borked. I'll keep y'all posted!

Sudden Battery Drop

Lately, I've been having sudden battery drops. Like today I was just scrolling through my phone like usual when I notice my phone was at 21%. A few minutes later, I check my phone to open an app and I drop down to 7% all of a sudden. Right when I'm about to go charge it, it dies. All this in under 5 minutes with that last drop in less then a minute. Is there a way to fix this?
I just noticed there's also a blue blinking light after it dies. When I connect it to charge, it starts at more than 15% but when I try turning it on it starts, dies and shows that it has no charge just to start at the same percentage it showed when I connected it at first.
I have the same problem too. I asked here awhile ago about it and people said it was battery calibration problems. They said just to take out the battery, wait a few moments, and then put it back in. But now it keeps happening. I don't know if it's a faulty battery (it's not bloated or anything) or the software. You should try a different battery (and I might too)

Yea luckily my dad bought the same phone so I'll try to get the battery for a day and see if its my battery or phone.
Save me!!
Hey, thanks for your post. I have the same exact issue. Everytime I connect it to charge it, when it has low batt, it shuts down. In appearance it's OK, not bloated. The problem is the auto-shutdown when I connect it and the huge battery drops or fast drains. Have you solved this issue by changing the battery?
If you did, would you tell me how the OEM packaging is? Here in Argentina I have to pay usd$20 for one I am certain is fake or usd$50 for another one.. which I guess is the same fake, but if you could help me with the packaging or some detail, I'll be able to check the real one
Thanks in advance!
Help!
I have same issue on my Note 4 for a last few months. And it's just getting worse.
Today it dropped from 48% to 5% and turned off.
I even took it to Samsung service and they told me that everything is OK with phone and that I have to change charging equpment.
I did that and it didn't help. It's happening again.
I hope somebody knows how to fix this, it drives me crazy when I can't rely on my phone.
Tnx

My safest guess would be that your battery is now faulty and the only solution is to buy a new battery. In my case, I have 2 batteries (both original batteries from Samsung), and I have noticed that with one battery (an older one), my phone will automatically shutdown around 20% (displaying the same behavior as yours) while the other battery (a newer unit) displays no such problem.
Otherwise, you can always endure for another 2 months, the next Galaxy Note (don't know whether it will be call Note 6 or Note 7) is rumored to be out in mid-August (based on what I have read online)

I am not sure if I want to buy next Note. I am really not satisfied with Note 4 build quality. I have problems with signal, screen is scratched a lot even though I am using S view cover (like there is something wrong with Gorrila Glass 3), and now battery issues one year after I bought it. I didn't expect so many problems from Note series. But I also don't know what to buy next?

2016 is actually a great year for smartphones, we have a lot of great options this year regardless of budget. Personally, I am very excited about the following 3 phones that are coming really soon: OnePlus 3, ASUS Zenfone Deluxe and ZTE Axon 7 (all of them will come with a snapdragon 820 and 6 GB of RAM!!!).

Currently downloading the update. Hope it fixes my battery issues such as stopping at 88% when charging, and dying between 15 - 30%. Marshmallow sure sucks.
Does anyone know when will Samsung stops providing security updates for the Note4?
I'm glad that they are still updating this device.

My suspicion is that fast charging shortens the lifetime of the battery. I have turned it off and only use it when I really need a fast charge.

I never use fast charge, don't even have a fast charger because i bought my phone used off a relative.
Anyhow, my point being. I still have my original battery since late 2015. Charge it at night, and it last me all day normal use.
I agree fast charge is bad for battery longevity.
Edit. Also is it confirmed that this new update still roots and can still downgrade?

I never used fast charge, either, and my battery died after 18 months. I could blame it on a cheap wireless charging receiver I bought (and later replaced with an OEM Samsung charging cover), but it's also possible that Note 4 batteries just suck.
It doesn't matter to me. The new battery has been working fine.

That's a big possibility, look what happened to the Note 7 batteries.
Either way batteries are gonna go bad. All you can do is try to maintain them to last longer. Plus there's a lot of variables for each user. (Temp and humidity, letting them often drain completely, the charger). I believe all these factors affect our batteries. On top of, every battery cell is not gonna be to notch to begin with.
Also, i believe my battery might be lasting better than most because, overall, compared to most people, I'm a very light user. I don't do many battery draining things. Test some roms and browse the web.
I was just able to put TWRP 3.0.1 on this ROM after OTA update to QB3. I will attempt the SuperSU 2.82 next and post my results. At the time of this posting I have a pending QC1 update I am going to forgo at this time. I understand it to only be a security update. After installing TWRP I can no longer get OTA updates (by design I'm sure). I will post about the rooting shortly.
The TWRP recovery didn't stick. after a reboot to system, and then reboot to recovery, the recovery was stock again. I think there is a fix for this. I'm a novice, but wanted to share my experiences.
---------- Post added at 02:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:33 PM ----------
I did get it to root!!! For those of you wondering m process it is as follows:
I did OTA update to QB3 call me crazy but I have done back to back updates starting with PG1 and ending with QB3 today.
I put the superSU.zip file in the root of my SD card using windows I sued version 2.82 of SuperSu ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/stable-2016-09-01supersu-v2-78-release-t3452703 )
ODIN flashed using the AP option and un-checking the "Auto Reboot" check box in the "Options" tab. I was able to install TWRP 3.0.2 from .TAR file ( twrp-3.0.2-0-trltespr.img.tar )
Once the flash completed I pulled the battery, then the usb cable.
waited 5 seconds or so, installed battery booted into recovery
selected install in TWRP 3.0.2
selected the SuperSu.zip file (it chews on things for a bit, and finally completes installation) Read the screen, it mentions the possible appearance of a boot loop, but indeed it is rooting. I hung in there, it didn't take but maybe 2-3 boots, and it was back to the sprint splash screen, and it booted normally.
I then installed Titanium backup, and SuperSu popped up asking to grant root permissions, I granted them.
looked over SuperSU, it seems happy.
rebooted (just for grins)
Back to Titanium, still shows root checkbox.
I can't speak for anyone else's mileage, but for me, this was straight forward, and working for me at this time.
As a bonus, after completing this process, TWRP is also sticking, and starts when booting into recovery.

Here I was thinking my phone would stop doing soft reboots at least 4x a day while also being able to get LTE/4G in the same locations my Note 2 & 3 did.

Trying to get this installed but it seems that it doesn't play well with TWRP.
Also tried installing it manually in TWRP /cache/fota/update.zip but TWRP said the zip is corrupted...

I keep seeing people talking about this reboot problem when 99.9% of the time the solution is so simple. Get a new battery.
I wish it was that simple...

My Note worked perfectly until this recent update. About 2 days after taking the update, my Note started rebooting, lagging, freezing...basically becoming unusable.
I have 4 batteries, and no matter which battery or whether plugged in or not, this happened.
Wake lock app helped but then, yesterday, the phone wouldnt boot. Nothing but black screen. Would not charge with any battery or any combo of cables and chargers.
By playing around with it, I finally got it to boot into recovery, however, there was no recovery. No matter whether I did power up or down, I got download mode.
The firmware repair using the PIT file got me back in action through Odin. It still took half a day to get the phone stable.
Long story short, it's not always the battery. I think these updates cause issues. The web is full of similar cases. My phone has been completely stock and still this happens. Even going back to Android 5.0 didn't cure the software corruption that this latest update caused me. My phone still won't work without the wake lock app.
I was thinking S8Plus but now I'm thinking no more Samsung.

This has nothing to do with the battery. This issue with the Note 4 rebooting is common and no matter which battery you use, the issue continues. I have numerous reason why that is but they seem to do with the MM updates not playing well with the hardware on the Note 4, especially the most recent updates (last 2 or 3). No matter what people try, the issue continues. The Wake Lock app seems to help a bit but this is no long term solution and honestly I don't think Samsung or Google will invest any time in fixing this issue for a device that is over 2 years old. They want people to upgrade.

Does this include stock unmodified and fully OEM phones? My wife's Note 4 started rebooting a lot in the last few days. She has done NOTHING other than standard user stuff. Me? I always mod mine or add an extended battery, but hers straight up the consumer setup, including the original battery.
If the battery, why would a battery cause this? just getting old or is this related to mods or buying after market batteries.

A phone battery (at least these days) isn't like a D battery you put in a flashlight. It communicates with the phone. When it starts to go bad, it can cause things like premature shutdowns and boot loops.
Yes, I've been running 6.0.1 ever since I got it OTA, and have never rooted or loaded a custom ROM since then. Suddenly my phone started shutting down at 40-60%, and often went into a boot loop. The only way I could stop it was to put it on the charger. But as soon as I had it fully charged, it would start giving me problems at 40-60% again.
I bought 2 supposedly Samsung OEM batteries, one from Amazon, and one with the external charger from Sprint. They both fixed the problem, but the Amazon battery sucks. It looks identical to the Sprint, but I suspect it's a clone. It doesn't last nearly as long as the Sprint OEM battery. I bet you can get a battery that is genuine Samsung other than using Sprint, but just beware.
EDIT: Just as an aside, I didn't suspect the battery was the problem at first. The battery started to swell up, which is why I replaced it. It was a lucky thing that replacing it fixed the problems.
Thanks, got one ordered. for $15, it is worth a try!
Or is it a conspiracy! Is Samsung killing our phones, to make us buy new ones? ???
Just my 2 cents. I don't know, but here is a theory.
Everyone i see make a post about rebooting issues always mentions it after taking ota's.
Now my theory, i can only speak for myself. I've never taken an ota, always upgraded through Odin. When i got my phone it was on ob7, i think. And i upgraded it through Odin since. Thank God i haven't had any problems.
So i wonder if it has something to do with Samsung's ota process? Just a thought!

Samsung doesn't run the OTAs, they come from Google servers.
