Cover sensor stuck 'activated' - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I broke my Note 3's (N900W8) display at some point last year and let it sit for...a long while.
I replaced the screen about a month ago and I've noticed that the cover sensor is...well, stuck. It always thinks there's a cover attached and it's 'closed', resulting in an unusable device.
Occasionally it'll work fine for a few days, then go back to this state.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this outside of recompiling my AOSP ROM of choice and disabling the cover support?
I definitely don't have anything magnetic in or on the phone.

For disabling the cover I would do a hardware trick. Remove your back cover, use Tesa Film on the chip in the back cover. Put cover back. No it should run like without S-view cover. You should also dial *#0*#0 to go to the service menu and check all your sensors to see which is damaged.

Well, that's the fun thing.
I don't even have an S-view cover. It just acts like the magnetic sensor is on all the time...

Disabling magnetic wake...

Just wondering if there is any way to disable the "wake on magnet" feature?
The case I bought is a portfolio/book cover type, and when I fold the cover around to the back of the tablet, to read in portrait mode, the magnet in the cover shuts off my screen, through the back of the tablet.
So, any way to get rid of this "feature"?
Thanks

I'm sorry but I don't think it is possible to disable the magnet sensor. It's kind of like disabling a Graphics Card. It isn't really possible with an app without modifying the whole settings in the operating system. But I will say that it is weird having the magnet affect the sensor even though it is in the back? I really don't know about this. If I have an idea to help you for this I would tell you.
What is the name of your cover and when and where did you purchase it? This is a manufactures defect and they should replace your cover. This was very common when the "smart" covers first came out for the N7.
Of course you always have the opition of removing the magnet from the cover.

That video is brilliant. Exactly my problem, and such a simple, invisible fix. Perfect!
Now, what can I take apart that has a steel shim in it...

Any idea where can I buy the steel shim ?
Maybe worth experimenting with aluminium foil to start with although that is not ferrous. Otherwise run around with a magnet looking for somthing to cut out thin shim

Same issue for me. I cut a steel shim from a simple pin button (circle badge). This pins are everywhere and they are made of steel. Works perfectly.

Black spots on camera experiance.

My experience.
My backplate had cracks and needed to be replaced so I taught I look at the camera that has black spot syndrome.
Tried to clean it with compressed air.no use.
Dissembeled cameras lens part (needs soldering) and cleaned sensor.
Looks like some spots are gone but most of them are there.
No thinking that the problem isnt sensor but lenses.to be exact between lenses part that cant dissasemble easily.
Has enyone tried to fix it by himself?
No. I've simply returned it because it's not my duty to fix it. This shouldn't happen in the first place (no cracks, never put it in water, always had a case etc).

anyone knows how much it cost to fix the camera blackspot problem? coz my Z warranty period is over

Proximity problems

After about 4 weeks of owning my lovely Note3 my proximity sensor stopped working , and after reading many threads on here I decided to take matters into my own hands , I removed the back and removed the 12 screws securing the black plastic frame prised the plate off then removed the retaining clip over the sensor lifted the sensor out wiped it and wiped the housing with a cotton bud , then put the phone back together and my Note3 sensor works great ) The whole procedure took less than ten minutes and is very easy to do . :good:
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. As it turns out my issue was the case I was using.
Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
Did you have tamper proof sticker on one of the screws? I saw video showing how to disassemble Note 3 and guy had that sticker, I checked mine and it didn't have it, so no warranty repair worries. Also, since it seems the dust comes from speaker grill, did you do something about that? After 3 months my sensor still works fine, but if it ever broke I will put some type of material to block dust from coming in in the first place.

If you could show step by step with screenshot that would be helpfull since many here dont know what you are talking about.
Just Google note 3 teardown and there is a video on you tube showing how to dismantle the phone , it's really simple but ignore most of the video as your only interested in the proximity sensor.

Because dust gets inside through the speaker grill and stops the sensor working.

Does your S5 battery door creak/squeak when you put pressure in certain areas?

Does your S5 battery door creak/squeak when you put pressure in certain areas?
I have one that does creak/squeak when you put pressure where the Samsung logo is (under the auto focus), and another S5 that doesnt.
Does yours?
Put a good amount of pressure - is this normal?
Is your snapped on properly?
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
Nope, mine doesn't make any noise at all when I put pressure on it. Like eyecon said above, you sure it's on securely? If so, perhaps there's a defect with your back cover. But yeah, that's definitely not normal behavior.
Ya if it squeaks, I'd get it exchanged since it may not be closing and snapping in properly, thus negative the water resistant seal
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
no issues here, my battery door is strongly in place. But i do have some doubt about the rubber gasket in the back, if you guys want to take a look at my thread and post your findings it would be greatly appreciated
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716219
U should get it exchanged with warranty. This should not happen.

Mine does. I went to the store and asked for another to check on it and it did the same thing in the same location (in the middle of the power button side). I switched two covers on two phones and all combinations were with the exact same problem. Guess a bad batch or who knows what. It's driving me crazy . I'm waiting for my UAG case which I guess will cover up the issue.
Mine does. And it irritates me like anything. Going to the store to get it replaced.

If you have it go to your store and change it.
I have try that in the store and my was fine, but try it on the spot, so you don't have to go back again
I have the same problem and the Samsung support mean to me, I must send my phone to the Samsung repair. They are crazy, I don't like to send the complete phone to change 1 back cover, next week I wend to the provider where I bought the phone and then I see, maybe they'll change the cover
Yup, have that too but it doesn`t bother me a bit. I use a flipcase or s-view case anyway.
My wireless charging back cover creaks like mad. Worse place are just below the power button and above the camera lens.

A phone that creaks bothers me a lot.
Today I started to notice this on my s5. It's mostly on the right side, but it can squeak a little if pressed in the middle. It's not something that is very audible but what worries me is if waterproofing is compromised or not.
Also, it's fully snapped on and o checked that multiple times
EDIT : Just noticed that pressing on the heart rate area, the case gives in a bit and has a small gap. I poured a bit of water on top of it to see if it would leak a lot of water (haven't used the phone on water or tested the waterproof before) and after i take out the case a bit of water entered through there. It wasn't much, but maybe if it was submerged in a bit more water it would leak more inside and i don't know if it would reach the battery or not. Is it normal for water to enter there? Or is there a problem in the case?
Also, in most all of the inserts the cover clicks when i put it back on, except on that right side that i mentioned. Funny enough, the water leak on the heart rate sensor is on the left side of it.

Anyone can tell me if this is "normal" or if i should take it to warranty? Is a back case even covered under warranty?

Mine creaks on the right side as well, and I made sure the case is fully snapped all around. And just like yours, in most all of the inserts the cover clicks when i put it back on, except on that right side. Its annoying at times, but I learned to ignore it most of the time. I wnot bother exchanging or returning. Had the phone for couple months now.

Its something that only a few people seem to experience because i haven't found many reports of it, only a few. Probably some batches of phones with a production problem or not so good quality control, i don't know =/ But i do know that all the clips are snapped on or at least look like it.
I actually contacted Samsung about it but got the generic and expected reply to take it to a repair center to analyse the phone - which i didn't. My main concern would be any problems with waterproofing, but i just putted on a case and don't think much about it now actually.

Note 4 Camera Problems?

Hello friends,
So I have been using my note 4 for almost 10 days now and ever since day 1 I noticed that the camera is so distorted, even with good lighting conditions, Also the focus circle keeps coming and going on it's own...is there a focus problem?? Also there are so many camera settings that are missing like Landscape mode, Night mode...etc etc.
My note 4 is the SM-9I0C Model.
Thanks in advance.
did you remove the 2 plastic sheets on the lens ? scratch it with your fingernail.
if they are gone then replace the note. bad camera probably.

Landscape mode and night mode I believe come on automatically depending on the conditions when you take the picture.
As for focus circle, that's probably continuous auto focus.
TWO plastic protection films on the camera lens ?
Sure ?
I found just one; the one with the circular hole in the middle.
Shall I try scraping off the lens glass ?

Ok thanks for the info Jonathan.
two. one flat plastic covering the whole lens and one plastic with a hole in the middle.

Feel free to call the Samsung customer help center, they may help you bring it in for repair by describing them your problem :fingers-crossed:

if there are two of them how can i get the second one off?! I tried to peel of something that looks like it's plastic protector with my nail but only my nail peeled off
In the camera app, next to the shutter button, there is a button for modes. In the modes list, you can download sport mode from the play store. That mode reduces the auto focus.
Sent from my SM-N910F using XDA Free mobile app
i peeled the hole one off by putting my finger in the middle and scraping outwards. peeled the non hole one off with my fingernail at the edge of the lens peeling upward.
Hi, I wonder if someone could help me... I wanted to download additional mode for the camera, Sports Shot, however it requires signing into Samsung account and that seems to be a problem. Maybe because I'm rooted? I have tried defrosting all apps related to Knox but it did not help. I have even tried to reset my Samsung account password and still receiving "processing failed" error when signing into the account. Does anyone know what to do to be able to download it? Or perhaps, does anybody have the app/mode itself?
Edit: all sorted - if you have a same problem, try the following:
go to https://account.samsung.com and complete all of your details, log out and all should work again, did for me
Hmmm...
It FEELS like there's something more you can peel off. But I'm not sure if that's a) possible to peel off, and b) if it's meant to be peeled off. Maybe a kind of glass protection.
Wouldn't make too much sense stacking two protective foils at once on the lens.
As my photos taken with the Note 4 turn out to real great, I don't wish to change anything.
But of course I am tempted to trying to peel off that additional layer, if it's possible at all. - But we know how it is: Once removed, you just cannot undo it 100 %.
replace your phone while you can if your camera focus is not working. ( if that what you mean ). because I have the same issue and if you surfed the internet you will find some guys suffering from this issue,,
