cofuced about firmware vs ROM vs recovery.img. What are the difference? - Samsung Galaxy J5 Questions & Answers

Hello.
I am a bit confused:
I have successfully rooted my samsung j5 with a imagefile named recovery.img sized only 14mb ( I flashed recovery.img with Odin.)
And all my apps/settings was NOT deleted when using recovery.img
I can see firmware ( 1.28GB) and ROM (754mb) can be downloaded and flashed
What is the difference? what are recovery.img ( 14 mb ) doing vs firmware or ROM?
And what happend when flashing with firmware files ( 1.28GB)?
And what happend when flashing ROM files? (754 mb )
I have noticed that next time I shall upgrade my phone I can use Flashfire app and than I will not delete my apps and settings.
But, what shall I use flashing with next time I have to upgrade and without deleting apps/settings/files? Rom or firmware?
Or next version of recovery.img?
I see it is a warning that all data, settings and files will be deleted when flashing with ROM or firmware files, but I guess Flashfire will fix that without deleting anything
I am bit confused, special bec of recovery.img is only 14 mb....and my phone is with root privigelies
Plz help a dummies
Regards
Rolf

how to flash my original 5.1.1 kernel ?

HI everybody
I updated my n910H to 5.1.1 , worked well and decided to flash a custom kernel . also faced to problem with wifi and now i decided to flash my original kernel.
i extracted the boot.img from update package N910HXXU1COH4_N910HOLB1COH4_N910HXXU1COH3_HOME.tar
now, im not sure how to flash it !! via odin or anything else needed
thank u for your help
any help ?????
when I had my S3 if I needed the stock kernel I would simply reflash the stock rom since they usually have the stock kernels built-in
Sent from my SM-N910H using Tapatalk
i dont want to reset my phone , i just want to flash the original kernel

Never tried with samsung phones (and probably it is not possible) but with my other android devices I just extract the boot.img from the ROM and flash it with fastboot using the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img".
With a samsung device you should probably (or definitely) create a flashable .zip file with the boot.img of your stock ROM and flash it via recovery.
You need to download your original kernel from net, there are 2 types of file you’ll find, one is .zip and another one is .tar. If you download .zip file you have to flash it with recovery (CWM/TWRP) or if you download .tar file (don't try to make your own .tar file) then you can flash it with Odin tool.

Any custom rom for galaxy a8

Is there any custom rom for galaxy a8 and any root support
http://choimobile.vn/threads/a800f-spacex-kernel-v0-1-auto-root-busybox-android-5-1-1.60311/
Root is done. No custom recovery yet.
WARNING DO NOT USE THE METHOD ABOVE IF YOU HAVE MODEL SM-A800I IT WILL SOFT BREAK YOUR DEVICE
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL STOCK FIRMWARE TO RESTORE YOUR DEVICE
IT WILL FAIL ON WRITING boot.img.
if that happened you have to download stock firmware and open it using winrar then extract boot.img, find a tool to create boot.tar for odin I used this one tar-Tool_Odin3-v3.07_by_mkh.mourad and flash it.
i had wiped my system for flashing rom but wasn't able to flash it bcoz i was showing error no when i try to reboot it shows no os wht should i do now plz help i dont have a backup and my model no. is a800i

Making custom SM-G903F (GS5 Neo) LL 5.1.1 Pre-rooted Odin Rom (HELP)

Hello the community,
i'd like to ask you for help because i don't manage to make it.
Here is the problem :
1/ i flashed last firmware for the phone
2/ then root it, install latest busybox....
3/ dump from my phone cache & system using this :
dd if=/dev/block/platform/13540000.dwmmc0/by-name/CACHE of=/sdcard/cache.img
dd if=/dev/block/platform/13540000.dwmmc0/by-name/SYSTEM bs=4096 of=/sdcard/system.img
I check it using linux reader. No problem at all
4/ Then repack those 2 files with others files which are on stock tar file (boot, hidden...)
5/ Launch Odin, put my tar on AP then flash.
- All were ok until it came to cache.img then fail
On stock tar, there is a system.img (not .raw). Don't know if it is sparsed but....i suppose as it needs to be converted to bre used with linux reader.
So i dunno what to do to have a valid cache.img & system.img
If you can help me, i will be grateful.
Thanks for all.
Hi
I'm trying too making a pre rooted stock rom flashable through odin. But i get everytime a "failed" from Odin.
However why are using your cache instead of cache.img present in stock firmware?
Try unpack stock firmware and replace only custom "system.img" that contains root and finally repack stock firmware!
Well some info i need is in cache
why don't you make a flashable zip since you know the partions then add root

A stock firmware pre-rooted flashable through odin is more comfortable whenever you wanna reset your phone isn't need to using FlashFire or Mobile Odin. IMHO

Firmware is 50mb zip file . the files are taken from fastboot rom and zip is made.
These files updates ur hidden partition like modem, bootloader, firmware of cam, audio, wifi, blueooth.
U dont need to flash firmware with every rom. It is flashed only once and stored permanantly in those partition. Format and wipe doesnt erase it.
Flash Only if u r officially unlocked bootloader by official method.
Flash only global file. Other one is china.

No rules. U can flash firmware any time . Its stored in hidden permanent partition.
Roms , gapps and kernels are flashed in system ,data , cache and dalvik and boot partition. Which can be erased or formatted using factory reset command or format command.

Flash done with stock rom

I need samsung galaxy m30s ins stock recovery file only....I installed twrp but failed to root now I want to remove twrp so I need stock recovery...image of build number has been attached.
I know it's a lot but if nobody sends you the stock recovery maybe you should try downloading the whole firmware and extracting it yourself.
I already flash stock rom thanks for replying... close this thread....
