home button press causing phone to reboot then corrupt - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recovery: twrp 3.1.0.1-klte
Os: lineage-14.1-20170122-UNOFFICIAL-kltedv
Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900I
Issue:
Installed twrp over odin with no issues, followed instructions and backed up samsung stock rom.
downloaded open_gapps-arm-7.1-nano-20170822 to go along with lineage-14.1-20170122-UNOFFICIAL-kltedv rom.
Installation went fine with no unexpected errors, pre setup went fine and phone seemed to be in a operational state until the phone would screen timeout then the issues began.
Clicking on the home button to wake screen causes the phone to kill and reboot forcefully with no notice, then tries to load lineage os then goes straight into crash state and constantly reboots then bricking the os.
Tried wiping divik and internal storage, changed gapps to open_gapps-arm-7.1-stock-20170822 and reinstalled the lineage os platform followed same procedure as before and again goes on crash / brick reboot spree when pressing the home button after screen timeout.
gave up and restored stock samsung rom along with everything else (as i backed it all up) running 6.0.1 and no issues since everything working perfectly.
any ideas or is this a known issue? maybe i should look at installing a earlier nightly build of lineage.

Newest and official nighlies are always here: https://download.lineageos.org/kltedv. Quite an old build you tried... As your device works fine on stock, I'd say the old build is the culprit.

[Q] i9506 Post-Flashing Screen Deaths

Hi all, I own an i9506 and I recently flashed a 4.4.2 rom to it (currently using a 4.3 stock from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597058). The procedure of this flashing went roughly as follows:
1) Entered into Philz recovery, did the wipe required to flash a new rom (the option which specifically stated this). Cleared all the cache partitions, dalvik cache etc.
2) flashed the new rom, flashed gapps. Of all the KitKat roms available on the i9506 dev board, I've tried Buda's SPL Gaming Rom and solk2's CM11 Rom.
3) Reboot.
Upon startup, I completed the usual logging into Google accounts, cyanogen accounts, time/date settings, before the play store automatically began downloading all of my apps. After all the apps were downloaded smoothly, I turned the screen off. But it never turned back on again, though the two bottom buttons beside the home button light up when the home button was pressed. Having no other choice, I pulled the battery and turned the phone back on. This time, the moment the bootloader animation finished, I got a systemui crash error, which kept reappearing every time I clicked OK to dismiss it, rendering the phone totally useless. I've also tried going straight into a reboot after loading my apps (so no turning off the screen and battery pulling), but it still boots into that systemui crash loop.
Here's what my phone is running on now:
Baseband Version: I9506XXUAMHD
Kernel Version: 3.4.0 [email protected] #1 Sat July 5 16:42:37 CEST 2014
Build Number: JSS15J.I9506XXUBNE1
SE for Android Status: Permissive
In summary;
- after flashing a new rom, everything works fine before rebooting/turning off the screen
- Titanium Backup doesn't come into play here
- Dirty Flashing only makes the new rom hang at the bootloader animation
- no, I can't post on the original thread where I got the ROMs, cuz apparently I'm too noob, and the creators don't answer to PMs.
So my questions are:
1) is this FIXABLE?
2) has this happened to anyone else who's running a similar setup?
3) am I doomed to never enjoy Android 4.4??

Hi mate ,
I do not own a I9506 but what i would do is:
1 did you try a factory reset from recovery
2 Factory reset clear dalvick and cache , flash rom full wipe again
3 If everything fail , flash stock rom with Odin and start again......
Only restore data app with TB , do not restore system data only do it if is the same rom , if is a different rom from a different dev it may give you problems

[i9505] Cannot enter Recovery after Format Data

My i9505 was running stock KitKat from Samsung and I tried to install CM13 ROM.
So I used Odin to root the phone and installed TWRP 2.8.6.0. After that I flashed the CM13 ROM and the Gapps Nano.
I got as far as rebooting into CM13. But then the "Google Play Store has stopped working" message keeps popping up starting from the initial setup phase. I ignored the message and went on to setup the wifi but couldn't progress any further. The wifi was detected and connected but then it was stuck on the Checking Connection/Software Update step.
I tried to reflash the rom and gapps again to no avail. The third time to Format Data from TWRP before reflashing - still didn't make a difference.
What's worst is now I cannot even get into TWRP! Whenever I press Vol Up + Power + Home, it will show the small 'entering recovery' message momentarily on the top left corner but then it phone simply restarted again.
I tried re-flashing TWRP using Odin, but still didn't work.
I'm stuck now, cannot get into the OS nor the recovery. Any suggestion as to what to do?
Thank you.

Format Data from twrp sometime corrupts the file system and brick the phone. (It's happened to me once)
The best way is to flash official firmware via odin and start from there.
I see - I'll try re-flashing the official rom. Btw, would you recommend CWM recovery instead then? Honestly, I'm not very proficient with this whole thing. The reason why I formatted was because I still could see all of my old folders in the phone memory. So I thought Factory Reset didn't really clean up my old rom data.
What do I have to do if I want to start with a really clean slate with CM13 (after reflashing the official one first)?
Also, I still have the issue of CM13 setup being stuck at the Software Update step (right after Wifi setup). Any clue why that happened?
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

CWM is outdated. Your best bet is TWRP. Try version 3.0.0.
Factory reset doesn't wipe your internal memory, if that's what you mean, you will have to do it manually.
Also, I recommend wiping data, cache, dalvik and system partitions manually from the advanced wipe menu. Factory reset only wipes data and caches, not system.
Oh, and about that stuck at setup issue, just skip that step if possible, you can still change that crap later
If you are unable to set up the ROM, you could flash back to a completely stock ROM and start over.
OK, I'm back on stock Android now.
Before I try flashing CM13 again, I just need suggestions about these two issues I had from previous try:
Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped
I have searched for similar issues but can't quite pinpoint the cause. I used the correct GApps for my device and I also removed my SD card prior to installing.
Stuck on Check Connection/Software Update step
Last time I was stuck at this point and, responding to GDReaper, this step couldn't be skipped. The option was grayed out.

The sd card has nothing to do with it.
Sometimes gapps don't work on certain roms.
Just try another package.
If you use A-Gapps, the whole first time setup step will be skipped altogether. So that means that you won't run into the risk of getting stuck at that step again.
Or, after flashing the rom, you could use the recovery file manager to delete the setupwizard.apk after you flashed gapps. That should also prevent the initial setup process from initializing at first boot.

You probably used Opengapps. That also gives me a lot of errors.
Use Bankgs Gapps instead. They always work for me.

I used Open GApps, as was recommended in the CM13 post. So are you saying that my two issues were caused solely by the GApps? Because I thought me being stuck at Software Update was due to something else.

There are two files - one says Dynamic. But the file sizes are exactly the same. Is there any difference?

Not that I know. Just pick the one without Dynamic.

The initial setup process is related to gapps. And I don't recall there being any software update requests during the initial setup. It tells me to wait while it scans for network and WiFis, but I always skip those steps.
Open gapps sometimes work and sometimes they don't. It varies from day to day, since they are updated daily.
Just find a gapps package that works and stick to it until another version of android.
I just want to report back that my CM13 works perfectly with Banks GApps. Thanks to everyone who has helped!

[solved] Phone is acting weird ... random reboots shortly after boot

Hi there,
I started this topic because I am out of options and I don't know what to do at this point.
My Phone is a XT1562 DualSim.
I recently flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/development/rom-spetrum-mm-volte-t3462690 and I also installed "MODEM" (MPD24.107-70) from page 1, but not right away.
First I wiped everything expect "internal storage". The phone booted but it restarted during boot (which might be okay) but then it rebooted again during boot. The boot process finally finished and I got to the screen "Android is starting - Optimising app x of y." The phone rebooted even during that process and that is definitely not normal I think. So after a couple of reboots android did finally optimise all apps but the phone did still reboot withing the first 30 seconds after it was booted.
From here I did a lot of testing and doing. These are my findings:
- When I set phone to flight mode / airplane mode it does NOT reboot... Hurray!
- When I flash another ROM (Official CM 13, http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...m-cyanogenmod-13-preview-moto-x-play-t3252255) the phone runs like a charm, NO reboots whatsoever.
- - But as soon as I flash gapps and the phone is booted, I get the reboots again (usually within the first 30 seconds).
- - Again setting the phone to flight mode prevents itself from rebooting.
- - Apparently it doesn't matter what version of gapps I flash. I even tested the light version (ARM, 6.0, Pico, from http://opengapps.org/). It still reboots. I also tried gapps mini and stock.
Oh and I don't think its MODEM (mentioned above) related, because I faced these problems already before I installed / updated the MODEM. Well I thought its MODEM related, that's why I went back to MODEM stock version MPD24.107-52 but that did't help either. I should mention that I am not sure if I had MPD24.107-52 installed originally but spetrum (the rom developer) pointed me to that version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69129552
I also restored my working TWRP backup from an android I used for month and guess what, yep, reboots
brrrrr this is frustrating
I never experienced that before and frankly I am out of ideas.
Anything is welcome and appreciated
Thank you

Thanks I haven't done that.
To be clear, you mean firmware as in stock rom / factory image?
I always go back to flashing stock rom with rsdlite whenever things went wrong and I can't solve it by flashing small fixes.

I mean full stock firmware you flash with fastboot or RSD. Roms are usually only system + kernel, so not very helpful in your case
Guys! Good news. I did go back to stock firmware and from there to official CM13. Of course I had to root and install TWRP again but it was worth it.
I lost a few days spending my time with it but I'm glad its all good now thanks to you.

Phone in a freeze+reboot loop on CM14.1, started after turning phone off for a min.

About an hour ago I turned the phone off while it was plugged in to my PC charging. I was on CM14.1 20161208 nightly and whatever the newest opengapps ARM 7.1 mini was at the time of that nightly. After 5-10 minutes I turned the phone back on and ever since then it will boot up and I can do stuff or just let it idle for maybe 15 seconds before it freezes and reboots itself. I never had any problems with it prior to this, other than auto-rotate not wanting to work in some cases.
I have tried battery pulls, dalvik/cache wipes, a reflash of that nightly, a full wipe of everything by SDCARD/USB Storage and install of latest 20161225 nightly and latest opengapps ARM 7.1 mini(tried this 3 times so far). Nothing has fixed it.
It's obviously rooted, did the dev aboot bootloader unlock method last year, is on the bok3 firmware.
Not sure what to do at this point. Is the phone trashed?
ETA: It seems the problem goes away if I do a full wipe and install of my rom, but do not install opengapps. Makes no sense, I had no problems with the phone or opengapps before turning the phone off earlier today.
ETA2: After letting it sit for a while, and configuring some settings, I decided to reboot in to recovery and try the latest opengapps arm 7.1 pico to see if that made any difference. After boot it took about 15 seconds for the phone to freeze. Why am I suddenly not able to run opengapps on my phone at all?
ETA3: Fulled wiped and installed rom again. Worked fine until I google-searched for the play store apk, viewed a thread here, clicked on the apk link, and once it should have started downloading the phone froze and rebooted. Working fine now, but it for whatever reason that download trigged the freeze/reboot. Could really use help with this before I'm forced to go out and buy a new phone before I go back to work on Tuesday.

I didn't think it was the rom since I reflashed a previously working version, tried the latest version, performed several full wipes, etc. I'm fetching the latest 13.0 and will get the latest opengapps mini for it and see if that helps.

Rebooted to recovery, wiped everything but externalsd and usbstorage, installed "cm-13.0-20161013-SNAPSHOT-ZNH5YAO21M-kltevzw.zip" and "open_gapps-arm-6.0-micro-20170121.zip", rebooted, went through preparing apps which I don't think it did on the repeated 14.1 installs earlier, now I'm going through my usual setup and app installs with no freezes. Seems like it was a 14.1 issue.
Thanks GeTex.

I'm on OK3. Is there any path to upgrade to a newer firmware while maintaining unlocked bootloader and root, or is it advised that I stick to OK3 and use only the DEV ABOOT roms like I have been?

My phone ran fine on CM14.1(7.1.1) for at least a month and a half. Not sure why turning the phone off made it stop working with that version. CM13.1 is stable, have you tried that?
Been having the same issues with a 7.1.1 rom Mokee. For the time I've reverted to my S4....
Exact same steps i took. Flashing, wiping, and everything minus external SD.
There is a bootloader update which I did. There is a full update bootloader (I updated and now on PL1) which takes you to Safestrap then back yo TWRP. Others have reported just flashing a PL1 firmware in Odin under AP runs stable.
At this point I'll drop to 6.0 roms, my issues is holding cell service. I can't get any clean flashed rom to give me full data and call service.
I'd like to update firmware/radios if it's possible and won't break my unlock/root and still allow TWRP. Just not sure how to do it properly, starting with my unlocked/rooted BOK3 firmware.

SM-P580 blackscreen problem

So tl;dr version - i was using my tablet, saw an update to magisk, installed it, now it boots to black screen while running sambones rom
[SM-P580] [BQK1] SaMBoNeS
TWRP 3.2.3.0 --> 3.3.1.0
longer story:
i was trying to get a game to run, it wasnt...and realized it has been a while for a restart, so i checked to see if anything needs to be updated and saw magisk needed an update. i didnt note what version it was before but it was a version or two earlier than what it was trying to install.
rebooted to blackscreen no samsung logo
have tried restarting a dozen times, booted to TWRP, tried to force normal system boot through the UI, nothing.
I tried installing a new kernal [SiriKernel], it made it to the samsung logo, waited 15 - 20 minutes and it never made it past. restored a backup using TWRP
updated TWRP to 3.3.1.0, still no luck.
i had this problem a long time ago, and cannot figure out how i fixed it....it may have fixed itself but it isnt this time. any advice would be appreciated. I am trying to avoid wiping and starting again if at all possible because the problem seems familiar. also trying to stick to a rom for use with adaptive storage. if i do have to wipe if that can be done on a newer stock OS that's fine as well but last time i messed with this tablet it wasnt
