Paranoid Android - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Anyone know what the chances of AOSPA making an appearance on the V20?

AOSPA came and went. No longer under development. Unless somebody else takes over the project, not likely it will resurface.

Pretty hard for a beginner. It was pretty hard for me to build it too and I'm not a beginner.

This device is simply phenomenal but LG simply become like Samsung but LG not see their north yet lack of updates, bootlops, failure hardware etc same applies for others but LG no learn can`t imagine this device LG v20 GPE simply a beast plus stock camera on AOSP ROM!!!!!
Yes I know only was a dream

Do you have a link to that ROM? Also why did they stop development?

I wish it was. It's my favorite rom.

Ill see if I still have it. Dude moved onto the note 8.

Damn, thought I was getting a christmas gift. I wanted this for our phone too but it seems any other rom other than stock has some issues with the kernel.

https://github.com/PA-CAF
This is similar to AOSPA legacy as stated by the maintainer of the source I've built on it for the oneplus2 which which dident get offical N support its easier to build than regular AOSPA but the way lineage separated trees has complicated things... I'm going to try to get it going but I haven't really dealt with this conversion stuff before

Update while I've gotten it to build, a while back actually, it fails to boot something in the dalvik machine setting up boot it fails to register a method in an other file the full log found here:
https://hastebin.com/upeceyuhel.pl
I'm more of a kernel guy (pretty newish at it too ) so I have no idea how to fix this, so please chime in if you know something but ill ask for help in the building thread see if they can help. Just wanted to let you guys know some progress is being done on it. Im in classes so not much free time left over and with Oreo on the horizon for lineage, so this PA-CAF Nougat build feels a bit out of place especially since i stripped out a lot for it to build, I don't think that may affect the dalvik machine mostly ambient, double tap to wake, and a few customization features......
With all that said can I a show of hands (or thanks so the thread is kept clean) who is interested in this I have us996 so that will come first if I get it done (don't think it will be that hard as opposed to fixing the gestures and ambient displays stuffs) still no promises I'm used to building for myself with most the work is already done and me only adding a few things, but I wouldn't mind a challenge.

no I would work on it again but I've stepped back from compiling for a bit and it was also during the time oreo was on the horizon for the v20 so getting nougat AOSPA working felt like a waste of time
now pie is on the horizon and would like to see how it's going with PA-CAF on pie but lineage pie tree would need to become available for our device as idk how bring up to a new android version works

Well, no real need to thank me. I just start projects and hopefully someone else comes along and finishes them! Great job. Thank you. I look forward to flashing this on my kid's Eris.
Oh sure, now you tell me
What are the differences between the old kernel and this one. Also will this be okay to flash on GSB?

Congrats!
Is this based on the recent HeroC/DesireC sources, or the older s0be based sources?
Are the updates on github or some other repository site?

Yeah, me too I had been working on the breber github source and finally got a bootable ERIS that I could adb into and captured a dmesg as well. Only thing lacking (small issue), is that none of the buttons worked I had an idea on a fix but lost my dev box and am waiting on a replacement MB to continue.
Question is, how different is the source tree for this kernel from the breber github source? When I used the breber source, I did change many kernel options to build many items as modules (ipv6 etc...) I've used the stock CM7 as the base w/ many mods for our older phones, and was able to reduce the size of the kernel image fairly significantly. Bootup was a bit quicker, but main idea was to remove some options that are rarely used, but still make them available as modules.
I've not tested this kernel yet, but I had to make a lot of mods to the defconfig etc... to get breber to work. 2.6.35 gives us some nice features, such as auto memory compaction / defragmentation etc... In the short time I was able to use it, it appeared to run better than the .29 we've all been using.
has it been a few days yet?

Yes, finally I just got it up and running end of last week and have been playing catch-up. I use this box as a mailserver for my domain, so it spent the first 10 hours processing over 49000 messages.
Funny timing though, just compiled .35 and was getting ready to flash it. At this point, I have no idea where I left off Maybe I'll smoke the Eris next....
as long as we get a download link soon
I was hoping we might hear some updates for the people working on this...
It would be a big help if those who have gotten it to boot would post their source so others can help get this to a stable point without having to repeat work. I'd like to see Eris development stay alive even as many, including myself, have moved on to more powerful phones.

sounds good to me. I do have my box up and running, just haven't had much time to mess with it. somewhere along the the line, I screwed up my Conf, but I'll get it. It boots, but I've messed up the mtd enumeration, so no init gets started.
Just as an fyi, I'm using breber's github source with the arm 4.4.3 eabi.
Well, the good news is, I'm running 2.6.35 now. But.... the bad news is that it's on a new Moto Razr. However, I'll still be tinkering with the Eris in my spare time.
I've rooted the Razr, but I'll tell you. Getting recovery on it's a booger. Also, the battery is sealed in (I'm sure the 2 small screws at the top allow a lift out and disconnect). But, kinda got nervous for a sec when I tried to boot into recovery and got nowhere with no easy way to pull the batt. Overall, liking the phone a lot.
Now.... If only I can dig up my working config. I have a cloud based backup system that versions stuff. Need to go through and see if I've got something there.

Having a current generation phone is quite a change. I am enjoying my gnex a lot and since it doesn't need much modification, I still get to spend a good bit of my dev time with the eris .
Maybe we can talk workshed into messing with this .35 kernel again when you find that config...or he might be burnt out for awhile on the frustrations that are the kernel porting and the tbolt as a whole.

[Q] Port Kali Linux Nethunter from Nexus 5 to LG G2 (D802)

Hi everyone,
as the LG G2 is produced by the same manufacturer (LG) as the Nexus 5 and has the same chipset (despite some minor differences e.g. Battery, Display,...), I have been wondering if there is a way to port the Kali-Linux Android ROM (Nethunter) to work with the LG G2.
LINK: http://http://www.kali.org/kali-linux-nethunter/
LINK:http://http://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-nethunter-download/
The mere existence of a MAHDI ROM port from N5 to G2 makes me think, that it should be possible.
I would also be quite keen on getting involved in such an effort but I am not very fluent in porting Android ROMS.
I have basic coding skills and am not afraid of learning new stuff so I'd really appreciate if one of the Android-Gurus would kind of orchestrate the whole thing.
Thanks for your attention and good bye.
mick
That would be really awesome!
Yeah, but it seems it will remain a dream, as the members to whom this is addressed to, obviously do not read the Q&A Forums. Why should they anyway?
The problem is, if I open a development-thread it's not unlikely, that someone will be playing the wrong-forum-double-post-card.

To be honest, I'd say look at Dr87's github. He ported Mahdi over... Though really I don't think that the rom itself is "ported" so much as the drivers/kernel/ramdisk need to be modified to work with the code on this device.
I would suggest starting by getting the rom source you want. Then setting up the device in the source using the devices/kernel/vendor files he made. You'll likely get errors during the build, but it would give you a starting point.
There are many, many guides out there on porting roms to new devices. Read through some of those if you haven't and it might help to steer you in the right direction.

Do you mean, that it is not "ported" due to the fact that the chipsets of both devices are the same?

I don't want to look lazy, but as you pointed out, there are many guides out there. Some are old, most are really old. Can you name one or two particularly good ones?
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions...it's going to be a long night.
No, I mean the rom source doesn't seem to need heavy changing typically. Usually the changes to the rom code at large is pretty minimal. Most of the time you need to tweak the device files to work with the rom (caf changes and such).
To be honest, I'd point you toward the Cyanogenmod guides... they have some custom commands but their guide would probably be the most up to date of any.
That should be correct. They have a FAQ at the Nethunter site where they say, that one could use the rom by building a rootfs. This would imply, however, that one could not use the features that come with a dedicated kernel.
So, yes, the rom part should not be the problem. The kernel part will be problematic. I think I'll send a message to dr87, perhaps he has some advice, too.
Just to make it clear, I bought this device some days ago and I want to be quite sure that my messing around with it will not brick or damage it somehow.
Ok. So I'll have a look at the CM-Guides.
I just read about this for the nexus 5 and googled for the lg g2 and came across this thread. I would love to get this working on my g2, gonna do some more googling and see if I can find anything else going on.

I am learning how to port Ubuntu, at the moment. Once I learn that, I can attempt to do it with Kali. Sound good? It may a take a bit, but better than no one trying at all.

[POLL]unofficial cm14 alpha for desire 816 [NO CELL SERVICE]

UPDATED:
released.
ROM thread
so, I've built a buggy cm14 that's good enough to look at and play a little with the features that do work, and watch the eye candy and all.
it has wifi and bluetooth and SMS messaging.
Otherwise broken telephony.
only some of the sound works. no camera, nfc, location.
the idea is a poll.
I figure people like to click buttons, so the poll suits that.
I'm amazed at your skills. And I have learned a lot from reading this thread. More importantly, my VM 816 is still functional.

A lot of what I do is googling errors, borrowing commits from other cm devices with similar chipsets, (and commenting out lines that throw errors in the build until I figure out workarounds... not the most kosher of methods.)
It's fun, but I often lean heavily on stuff that's already been done by others. Grarak put up really nice device trees to work from on this device for example, and my first tweaks at it were just after it had faded from cm nightlies. Made it comparatively easy next to my Optimus or Evo3d.

Odds are the basic call services will be online way before 4G. Especially since my 4G service is still broken and has ben for quite a while. I'll hassle Virgin Mobile about a replacement sim card soon; research and talking with a Ting rep both imply that would fix my issue.

Well, htc certainly won't be releasing N for my a5_chl (Virgin Mobile variant) since they wouldn't even let M out the door for it.
you can partly name lack of manufacturer support.
And I get tired of complaints about nonworking items from people who don't read the OP, so I'm waiting for adequate interest to post it (big upload on poor isp, couple hours.)
Plus there's inability to test dug/dwg and that's twice the upload bandwidth. But few source changes to build for them, and some dual sim owners would enjoy buggy N too.
Several reasons that N isn't out in the wild yet for the a5. But I'll probably set it free to roam soon.
Question about CM14
When you let it roam, I'm ready to try it out. But I have two questions. First, I am delighted with CM13. It was the first time I ever flashed a phone and it is working nearly perfect. A hiccup or two but nothing I cannot handle. It has extended the useful life of my VM 816 A5 and saved me from buying another phone. Here's two questions for CM14 whenever it becomes available. Can I just backup my existing files with TWRP, Wipe and flash CM14? Then, the real question is if I don't like it, can I completely restore what I have now with RESTORE? The last thing I want is to ruin CM13. Thanks for helping this newby.

yes, and yes. I restore cm13 over messed up cm14 regularly.
Still fighting with ril. location not working at all in spite of the switch working. and nfc probably will work once I get the firmware moved to wherever it's looking. but all the sound seems to be working now.

It's ok in this thread, since that's kind of what it's about.
If I can stabilize the radio glitches enough that all the telephony stops force-closing constantly I'll release an alpha, there isn't tons of interest but there seems to be enough.
After all, if I were in your shoes I'd want a release to check out.

A lot of developers get uppity about ETAs.
I imagine with hot new devices and hundreds of posts a week it would get really old.
I usually just warn people that I have too much on my 'real-world' plate for my own taste and that my hobby work (this) ends up on the bottom of my get-er-done list.
Plus I like to put up it's-almost-ready posts and then take forever to upload:angel: and similar annoying delayed releases. Like I rebuilt for the OV a little while ago, posted about it, and never debugged or released it at all.
Bad dev :cyclops:
I put this thread out in general 816 to encourage comments and questions.
Once the alpha is out I'll open a thread in Original Dev (and post a link to it here) since cm14 is definitely original right now.
About to flash another test build!
Test has sms but no phone.
No Bluetooth.
Close to being uploadable.
assuming the next build isn't in any worse shape than this one (should have working BT, and I'm really hoping for at least 3g data and maybe phone service) then I'll try pushing the zip to AFH. If my landline internet stays connected long enough to get it upstream...

Galaxy J7 Perx [J727P] Donation Fund for Lineage Development/Port

Hello everyone,
So we've got an active developer wanting to port Lineage 15 to the new J7 Perx on Boost/Sprint, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, etc. But we need to raise some funds to help @minz1 get the device in his hands. Minz1 ported Lineage 13 & 14.1 to the J700P for Boost/Sprint, Virgin, etc. He's also helped with other projects such as the Vulkan TWRP zip floating around to enable Vulkan on devices that don't ship with Vulkan but support it.
You can find Minz J700P Lineage thread here if you're interested: Lineage 14.1 for J700P. Minz got Lineage running great and stable on that device.
I'm donating to help Minz get this device in his hands, and I would like to ask if anyone else has upgraded to this new J7 Perx and enjoyed his work previously, if you can donate anything at all that would be awesome!
Use this PayPal link (this in Minz1's PayPall. You can ask him directly for confirmation.) and anything you can donate will go straight to him.
https://paypal.me/minDEV
I'm donating $50 for a start. We need a goal of at least $160 as that's the cheapest available in his area.
However I would like him to get a case as well so if we can raise a little more for a case that would be great too. The build quality of this device is not the greatest ever >.>. I broke the screen on my first one after one bad drop.
Anyway donate something if you can if you would like to see Lineage ported to this device.
Thanks for your time,
Animania260
I can verify all the information in this post is correct; if I can get my hands on the device I will first work on TWRP, then I'll work on the LineageOS bringup.

Guess everyones lost the Faith why is no one else give what that can ?? ?
Is there still a need here? I just got this phone and am eager to start on a slimmed and themed ROM similar to my old Warp OEM, but would prefer to have a custom recovery available first.
How much more funds are needed to get this guy a J727?

Oh dang, thanks a ton for the help! I'll be able to order a J7 Perx now
I'll probably have the device by around next week, and I'll start work right when I receive it.

No problem! While I can't do a whole lot of testing until TWRP is in place since my J727 is my daily driver, I'll be pushing for you by remote lol
Best of luck to ya!

And just to add a foot note: you can always donate a little extra funds to Minz through his PayPal link in the OP of this thread. Minz did not ask me to post this and he does this work because he wants to and likes tinkering with things as we all do here on XDA and in any modding community. He's never asked for funds that I know of. But if you ever feel like giving him a little bonus for his work send him a little money for a beer [emoji106] or something.

This phone is way too affordably powerful to not get some custom recovery awesomeness. I'm currently working on a slimmed ROM for the Avant, and it'd be nice if I could apply all I learned on that Samsung to this one when I'm done
Right this thing has some good potential if we can get around Samsung's broken source or whatever is preventing custom built - yet completely stock kernel source. No modifications. - from booting it'll be awesome. Minz will most likely figure it out now.
These new chips built on 14nm manufacturing process get crazy battery life and they don't overheat or at least get very hot like older chips. I have screenshots of 10.5 hour ON SCREEN TIME battery life on this device with 4% left, and it took me about another 45 minutes of YouTube videos on half brightness to completely drain the battery. Insane battery life on this thing No battery saver options enabled. Some gaming and half brightness setting or higher, as I regularly move from indoors to outdoors and I'm constantly changing the brightness.
My only gripes is no fingerprint sensor and we didn't get an AMOLED display like the J700P but the display isn't too bad once you get used to it. For the price can't complain too much. Also native Vulkan support and we should get official 7.1 and hopefully Android 0 and some point. If everything goes well of course Minz will have an Oreo Lineage Build way before we get an official build.
Though one thing I never understood - and the J700P was the same way. I've never seen even a low-end device that did not have an ambient light sensor, to automatically change the brightness of the display. What the hell is with these $200 devices (at least when first launched, it's not $200 anymore) not have an ambient light sensor -_-
I mean really doesn't bother me that much, but it's 2017... Come on. Ambient light sensor has been a simple, standard feature for a long time now.

Just wanted to say.. Thank you to all who have donated so far.. I've been between checks myself. After 4 phones with Boost and never a custom rom... it will be lovely to have one at last, and especially for such a nice device.. Thank you for your efforts Minz..
Namaste...
Au.
p.s. I'll pass along a bit when I can this next month..

I've unlocked and rooted a while ago but I have a question regarding persist.img

I'm pretty sure I'm reading it wrong but are you supposed to back up persist.img before unlocking or after unlocking it seems as if my persist is fine fingerprint is working all sensors are working. I'm guessing I should back it up in case I screw something up as to not lose fingerprint? Also how would one go about updating while rooted I'm still on 10.19 security patch December 1st of 2019. Whoops

It isn't a bad idea to backup regardless. However, you do NEED to back up if your gonna be using a custom ROM and ever wanna revert back. I switched to AOSiP and backed everything up prior to it. While I do have the backup, not gonna lie, I probably won't use it.. OOS was getting messy for me and these custom ROMs are a breath of fresh air!

I was thinking of going that route honestly but I rely heavily on the fingerprint sensor so I might wait until illusion supports it. What were the steps you had to take to install it? If you don't mind me asking.

Not going to lie, it feels a tad more involved then standard flashing procedures, but totally worth it.. I had to fiddle with it a little bit, but the guys in the telegram group that's linked were super helpful. I'd give instructions, but it's pretty involved and I can't remember entirely tbh.. They're currently working on the fingerprint issue now, so hopefully, that can be done real soon.. but seriously if you want a better Android experience, AOSiP is awesome and it beats OOS by a mile!

I'll definitely take a look into it when fingerprint support is added. It's not my first rodeo been rooting and romming since my I'd say LG lucid but I hard bricked that trying to install CWM (whoops) so my galaxy S4

Same... I've been rooting since my Galaxy S2 way back in the day.. I just hate Google's required A/B partitioning scheme that requires different and more complicated flashing procedures.. It'd be nice if TWRP was fully functioning, but due to the different flashing schemes, we've still got a bit of time before we get that...

Yes the lack of TWRP is rough but I feel in a normal environment it's probably a good thing. It's ashame Google has strayed away from the whole nexus ideology of Android is for developers and Android can be used for power users. But I understand the reasoning behind it
