One of my friends came from overseas a few months ago with VoLTE working on Tmobile US. At least I thought it was.
I did not think much of it at the time, but now that I have my own Z5, and can't get it to work, I'm curious.
Is there any special APN settings needed for VoLTE on TmoUS?
WHen i received my Z5, I noticed there was not any option for VoLTE. I went ahead and flashed the a singapore rom and it is here now but still cannot get it to work. I will try different settings and update.
I am also going to go through a few more roms to see if they work out of the box with it.
WIll it not ever work unlesss TmoUS certifies this device specifically? I don't think that is the case.
It's carrrier dependant
VoLTE uses the SIP protocol for communication. Aside of the implementation of the handling of such calls you would need the necessary data for registering at the server including the server's address, username and password.
I bought my international version from Amazon and turns out it is a Taiwanese version.
I can turn volte on or off but I can't tell it is working or not cause I don't know how to test it.
Testing it is pretty straightforward. Make sure you're on a 4G (LTE) network and place a phone call. Watch to see if you're signal changes to something other than where it started.
My experience is that I have 4G (LTE) in fewer places than 3G, as 4G seems to be less awesome at penetrating thick buildings. So, I don't see what the advantage/concern of VoLTE working or not is. But, I'm happy to learn.

When I make a call, the icon switch from 4G into 3G and H+ (back and forth between the two).
Does it mean no VoLte?

I have the same question too.
That's my understanding of the problem. With my AT&T iPhone, it stays reading LTE when I place calls.
If you see switching from LTE to another network upon dialing or receiving a call and going back to LTE once hung up it's a very strong indication that VoLTE does not work.

THat is correct. My phone switches from 4G to H+ when on a phone call...
After many hours with t-mobile, and also at work, i was informed that t-mobiles VoLTE is proprietary and only tmoUS branded devices are usually the ones to get VoLTE to work with them.
Maybe in the future that will change, they said. oh well.
Until now every provider's solution is proprietary as the 3gpp standard is not finalized yet. So we need to be patient...
I had my phone running PureNexus(7.1.2?) on Cricket with no issues, a couple days ago at the same time as switching to Sprint, I decided to update my ROM, went with a 8.1 ROM. When I did this, I had issues getting any sort of signal to work right, so I figured it was something with the custom ROM, grabbed the latest stock and reflashed. I then went through the same thing many others have here, but when I go back to the custom 8.1 ROM, I do not get LTE to connect, just 3G. Even erasing modemst1 and 2, it does not connect to LTE. So, ignoring that, I still backed up the EFS and restored it over the stock ROM. Doing this, I'm able to get 3G and voice to connect, but when I go into the phone menu(*#*#4636*#*#) and turn the radio off then back on, eventually it will connect to LTE. But in doing so, it puts the phone in 'emergency calls only' for voice. Currently it shows
Voice Service: In Service
Data Service: Connected
Voice Network Type: 1xRTT
Data Network Type: eHRPD
And if I go into the menu and toggle the Mobile Radio Power, it will change to:
Voice Service: Emergency Calls Only
Data Service: Connected
Voice Network Type: Unknown
Data Network Type: LTE
Once it goes to LTE, it does not go back to voice/3G even on reboot unless I erase the modem or restore an EFS backup. I've been able to replicate this 3 times now in 3 different 7.1.2 ROMs, anything 8.1 I've only been able to get 3G working. In 7.1.2 I am able to run the update device configuration, and update PRL. Both work successfully, but it still does the same thing. At this point, I know that the hardware works, as both do work fine, just not at the same time. LTE and voice does still work fine on Cricket, I put in another active SIM and both work as expected. Anyone know what else I could try?
Sorry if this is rambling, I actually had a much more detailed post then somehow refreshed my screen and lost it all
I'm essentially having the same issue with my Moto g5 plus on Verizon. Read my post!
I am having a similar issue on Sprint as well. For a little while I couldn't get 8.1 ROMs to connect to data at all, after serial flashing a bunch of them I ended up with data again accross all ROMs but now I only have LTE, it does not switch to 3 g ever, only 1x when making phone calls. I wish I knew which ROMs I flashed to get to this point but I can't remember anymore. Good luck.

Your problem is really simular to mine, but I have an axon 7 and the service is Total wireless (verizon). I can get data and calls are emergency only. Its very odd, the other odd thing is I have 2 axon 7 (got a replacement). The one with the problem has everything working and the kicker is I restored this replacement to match the working one. So why It cant connect is really odd.

How is this similar? You are trying to use an Axon 7 on Verizon's network... How do you expect that to work? The Axon 7 doesn't have a CDMA radio.

Yes it does have CDMA. Its just not officially supported by verizon. I found out that my modem partition I believe EFS was messed up and that contributed to the emergency calls only issue. I never got it fixed even through multiple re-flashes so I simply sent it back to ZTE.

I have read that thanks for pointing it out. I actually could offer a correction to what he says because you can get VoLTE on the axon7 with verizon but its tricky. I had to activate the phone on an HD voice 1.0 phone iphone 6 or newer and prob other models. I have total wireless (verizon Mvno) once I do that I can swap the sim and get VoLTE on the axon7 through turning it on in test mode. Ive had volte working for a while now. I believe verizon just thinks Im on the iphone6. and I dont know what would happen if I took the iphone 6 and tried to use it on another verizon account as my service is prob tied to its IMEI.
just got the phone yesterday and updated it to the P beta. everything works amazingly well for a beta in my opinion, BUT i cant receive calls. outgoing calls, texts, web and apps are just fine.
spent almost 2 hours at tmobile flipping all the settings around and no luck. any ideas would be appreciated.
Same issue here bro...Incoming don't ring but I get voicemail notifications.... Really annoying, even if it is a DP.
Turns out the beta doesn't play well with the essential LTE. Switch to 3g and calls will come through. Hopefully it doesn't take long to find a work around for it
I believe the people having this issue have volte enabled...try and disable volte (it's broken anyway and more than likely why calls won't ring through) and see if that works
Got same issue... My experience was that I could solve the problem with reboot.
Issue came after playing on settings for mobile network.
Is meaning, when you do this you have to reboot afterwards otherwise you can't receive calls
Try it.

Tried rebooting multiple times while changing settings around. The only way I can get the calls to come through is by going without LTE completely.

Settings/network settings/mobile network/advanced/enhanced LTE?
I had the same issue and to fix mine I just enabled Wifi Calling.
When on wifi I didn't get a call, just missed call notification. After enabling wifi calling, it comes through without issue.
I tested calling off wifi and on wifi and all calls come through good now.
This could be similar, so you guys might want to look at that also.
Good luck!
Heard from a few that this was solved by going into phone app settings -> calls -> calling accounts, then turning on "receive incoming calls". Seems it's disabled to save battery? Can't confirm as I just flashed to try it out and then went back to 8.1 because I like themes too much. Lol.
I'm on Sprint and was never able to make or receive calls regardless of Network settings in the easily accessible options menu.
The following fixed my issue. You can access this menu without downloading an app but I forget how so it's easier to just download the free app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xsquarestudio.forcelte
I had my network mode set to LTE/CDMA when first using this app, and somewhere in the middle I changed it to CDMA but I'm not sure how much that impacted the actual fix.
These were my steps. I'm not responsible for any damage this may cause to your device as I'm not sure if messing with these settings is foolproof or not.
First, opened previously linked app "Force LTE" then under "Set Preferred Network Type" I changed to CDMA only. Enabled/disabled airplane mode. This seemed to do nothing as LTE was still showing in statusbar.
I then chose CDMA auto (PRL), airplane mode on/off, didn't seem to do much either. LTE still showed in statusbar and couldn't make calls. Also "Voice Network Type" showed "Emergency Calls only" inside the app.
I then chose the 3 dot menu and chose "select radio band". I changed that to United States, without resolving problem. Then selected "Cellular 800" and this may have solved the problem, but I continued on and selected PCS, fiddled with some settings in Phones settings menu. Was finally able to receive calls and my signal indicator showed 3G. In app Voice Network Type was listed as 1xRtt. I decided to select radio band once more and chose Class 10.
Calls were still functioning fine. So I went into Main settings menu and changed mobile network from CDMA to LTE/CDMA. LTE kicked in and calls still work!
Again, these settings may only work for Sprint hence the PCS Network option, and I believe Sprint may utilize the 800mhz frequency. The app might show you different options depending on your carrier. I don't know.
Anyway, fully functioning! Woohoo!!

I don't have anything in my settings that says "enhanced LTE" .
Tried using the 4g/LTE and the LTE only options. Neither would let calls through.
I have this problem using the Essential PH-1 with Android 9 Pie in South Korea on the KT network. It should be fully compatible, according to radio specifications, however it only works when I change the following setting:
Settings | Network & Internet | Mobile network | Advanced | Preferred network type | 3G
This is not ideal, since it makes the Internet slow, but at least I can make/receive voice calls. I submitted a support ticket to Essential requesting their official help (I'm well within warranty).
I had the same issue when I use my Att prepaid plan. The problem is caused by wrong network type, you can send text and browse internet, because they use the different channel. My PH-1 wrongly recognized the sim as CDMA/LTE mode, just switch it to 4G/LTE, it will be work. Go to Settings, then search "wi-fi calling", point "advanced" then you can see an opinion "Preferred network type" if you are ATT or T-mobile user, and your preferred network type is "LTE/CDMA“ then your phone cannot make call. Switch it to "4G/LTE", you phone will be work. BTW, Verzion uses CDMA, so if you are Verzion user, CDMA/LTE will work for you phone.
I just flashed G930U firmware (Oreo RG3) on my verizon S7 and overall I'm much happier with my phone. But, sometimes when placing a call with a strong LTE signal, the mobile data disappears and becomes unavailable until the call is completed. The strange thing is that it only happens 50 percent of the time. I've changed my network settings from global to LTE/ CDMA but that doesn't fix the problem. Is this a known issue with the "u" firmware? Or is it perhaps only prevalent on this particular version I installed? Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks!

I don't think that the devices stay connected to 4G LTE while on the actual phonecall as it uses the data maybe for the enhanced calling?
I noticed the same change in connections on my Verizon s7 and att s4. It varies and changes during initiated outbound calls or once a call is incoming. Even seconds before incoming calls I see it drop from 4g LTE down to no internet at all. Then without wifi connected during those ones you can't get online while in call. It depends on phone Carrier like Att, Vzw, and even tracfone brand devices.
It usually cuts back to 3g or H+ and even old Edge/gprs or worse, 2g speeds until the calls are complete. Then regular 4g LTE will come back if your phone is working. This is all from personal experience so please don't take what I say over the other developers who might be able to explain what it is happening a little better.
Hope this helps either way!
P.s- It also probably depends on how strong your signal is to determine what speed you will drop down to during calls. Exp. 4g lte,4g,H+,H,3g,2g,edge,gprs,wap.
Rakuten Mobile (partner: AU mobile) in Japan is an MVNO that has a new UN-LIMIT plan.
There are many phones incompatible with their network (and partner network) and I'd like to understand why.
For example the Oneplus 5 supports all their+partner frequencies but it still can't grab the network (2G/3G and 4G).
There is a trick using a hidden setting in Android which is "LTE only". In that case, we can connect to the Internet.
1. We can't receive calls and can't call if the 4G isn't available because it happens via their "Rakuten Link" app (kinda VOIP).
2. The quality is awful, I receive a new complain of "echo" in the voice at each call.
Could you help me to understand what's the technological reason behind that?
If it isn't the frequencies, what can it be? I've searched everywhere, they never say the reason behind that incompatibility.
Thanks!
Dunno if you're still watching this thread but here's been my experience with Rakuten Mobile:
I have a rooted OP5T. Didn't work out of the box even after putting in the APN settings.
Did some digging around on Japanese blogs and enabling VoLTE does get me connected to the network. You can make calls over the network or use their Link app to use wifi/data instead. Both worked fine in the limited testing I've done. Data was also fine and pretty quick. This worked well for at least a few months.
However, some months later, the fixes and patches I have applied to get VoLTE enabled on my phone doesn't seem to stick or something is resetting it. If I stay home, my connection will stay on indefinitely, however if I go outside, after a few minutes my signal will drop and stay off until I reflash the fixes, or now it seems to reconnect if I reboot the phone. I am starting to think switching cell towers might be doing something? I have more testing to do.
