I decided to go into custom ROMs, but it's been nothing but trouble ever since.
NOTE: I own two cables and it's the same with both
I updated to the latest nougat build with Cosmic OS, and then realized my phone wasn't recognized by my computer anymore.
Tried RR, same deal.
Went back to MM oxygen OS, and all my problems were gone.
I loved Nougat, so I made a backup of MM and decided to stay on Cosmic OS for now, even though It's not recognized by my computer unless I put it in fastboot mode.
Two weeks into Cosmic OS, I realized that my phone has been charging a lot slower than usual (I used to just leave it overnight, and when I tried to charge during the day I realized that it was charging too slow)
I then thought: what if it's my cable about to die?
So I broke out my backup cable, same thing.
Again, back in Oxygen OS, the problem was gone.
I don't know what to do about this. I am tired of OOS, and don't want to go back, but slow charging is a huge disadvantage and I don't think it's good for my battery either.
update: I've tried RR, CosmicOS, LineageOS, and AOSiP.. all of them with the same issue for me.. I don't know why
I just keep having to restore that OOS 3.6.0 backup i made after accidentally bricking my phone after trying CosmicOS/RR for the first time lol
It is because of the ****ty charging drivers by Oneplus. They work for half of the users and break for other half. Boeffla has a kernel with 2 different versions of this driver baked in his kernel. Try both these variants and see if any works for you.

Thanks! I'll give it a try!
Never messed with kernels in the past, but it's worth the shot
EDIT: I forgot to mention in the OP, that my computer will not recognize the phone even when i am on TWRP, for some strange reason.. would the kernel solve that as well?
Also, I see that boeffla is only for CM based ROMs, I don't really like LineageOS compared to Cosmic OS, do you think it would work anyway?

No, a kernel won't fix that. Something wrong with your PC driver. Nothing related to phone.
You can try but it has slim chances of working.

Do you get the option to change from charging to file transfer on the phone when you plug it in.
When you pull the menu down you should have a USB setting thing.

I dont have that option when I drop down the status bar. In developer options when I select file transfer , it goes back to charging . I've used two different PC's and I'm pretty confident that I have installed the drivers correctly . And MTP doesn't work in twrp either . I'm on stock oxygen os right now any ideas ?
Everything you say tells me you should try a different cable. If that doesn't work, I have no idea.

Thanks to everyone for all of your replies. I was kinda stubborn about the whole "trying a different cable" thing because everything was working normally on my old cable, as long as I was on Oxygen OS..
I will never know why, but changing the cable did the trick. Now getting charging a lot faster than I was used to, even on my old setup!
Loving Nougat on CosmicOS!

I know this is possible depending on the phone, but on the Vibrant I have not found a way to install clockwork mod without using USB. I saw that mobile odin was an option for some samsung phones but not the Vibrant.
My usb port is dead, no warranty etc. I bought it for 70 in like new condition with knowledge that the port was bad. I figured that the port needed to be soldered back down. But after taking the phone apart, I don't see anything wrong with it. Its not loose on the board, but the socket itself is loose inside.
The baseband is KA2 Eclair. I got it rooted with the oneclickroot tool.
On a side note, the phone also came with pictures of the seller and all his girlfriends naked . Not pretty
So let me review what you want to do, you want to install CWR without having a USB port. Seems easy enough.
Firstly, find a app that will let you connect to your phone to your computer, apps like Dropbox, Box, and this app i put up on these forums a bit ago will do more than just the job HERE
install one of those, which ever you like. I'll use the MIUI File Manager as a example throughout this post because its the easiest.
Open the app, go to the FTP and start service, go to your computer open MY COMPUTER and type in ftp://all your #'s
Put this file in your ROOT meaning just in sdcard/ no folders just drag and drop it in there. DO NOT RENAME,EXTRACT OR ANYTHING TO THE .ZIP just put it in the sdcard/
*Thanks for the CWR file from Woodrube and S15*
Now go into Recovery mode on your phone
Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
Press REINSTALL PACKAGES
It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery.
it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there.
Just reply if i'm explaining something wrong or if you need more help.
Or you could just download and install rom manager and flash clockworkmod through there. No offense xriderx, just seems like a lot of work to just install cwr that a single app can do as well.

To each his own, Rom Manager never has worked great on my phone. Even bricked it completely once and I don't believe it was user error.
Relevant guide, +1 cookie. One suggestion though, organize the steps a bit further so there is a clear distinction between steps.
ie:
• Now go into Recovery mode on your phone, Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
• Press REINSTALL PACKAGES. It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery. it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there."
Anywho, to the OP: Since it's rooted, why aren't you simply downloading ROM Manager from the market and installing CWR from there?
edit/ beaten
Don't get me wrong, your tutorial is spot on, I just never had any problems with ROM manager before so I threw it out as a suggestion.

As far as the port goes, Eugene, Krylon360 and myself all fried ours when we were porting the V4G - so you may not visibly see anything wrong with it at all.
Thanks guys, I ended up semi bricking the phone . Even though it was my 6th droid device. Not sure what I did, I was in recovery and everything was working, then went to reboot and it was stuck on the Galaxy screen, could no longer get into recovery. Too bad that USB port was out . I ended up just reselling it to a guy for parts and still made some profit off it. Shame though, that AMOLED display was beautiful. Ended up getting a G2X yesterday for 195, just missed one at 150 on craigslist. Already got it up with CM 7.2 with a minor OC. Hopefully towards then end of this year I might be able to get a Galaxy 2 for cheap.

i have tried this.
but gingerbread loader and froyo loader are different.
it gave an error at flashing and stopped flashing.
Hmmm. That would require fastboot huh. Don't know of a wireless way to use that. Is there an unroot procedure you could do from your sdcard without a cord and then re-root to gb perhaps?

and i'm asking for something like this.
but i ask for froyo not unroot.

it was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the clockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and updare-binary) to create working update zip packages.

I don't think it is possible to downgrade to froyo from CM7 without ODIN. I might be wrong but that is how i remember it.
Though i did find this thread..

Just a reminder to some who have USB port problems. I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence here but remember Samsung phones are picky about USB cables.
I know because my phone was Semi bricked while doing Odin. Turned out my original Samsung cable went bad halfway through Odin'ing a new bootloader. After two months of playing with it I tried literally 5 different data cables that all fully worked for other phones and a few cheap off the street cables. Some would not even charge my vibrant but would work fine for data and charge on my wife's LG Quantum. Hard to find good micro-USB cables here in Peru. Finally I ended up modifying my original cable with another cable's micro-usb connector and wrapping a separate ground wire around the shield to get it to work. Samsung phones must require really good shielding to communicate and possibly not all cables have the shield connected on both sides or are properly shielded.

Hi every one ..
First of I'd like to tell u guys that i respect the helpful souls that you all have ...
Second .. let's get to the point ..
I have a galaxy s5 g900v (NI2) build
I wanted to root this device but I faced a problem with connecting it to the pc
I tried everything ... samsung drivers .. battery pull .. but what ever I do its still not showing .. (note that I rooted my friends phones on the same laptop and everything works fine)
I think it's a problem with the charging port .. but I'm not sure cuz everything else is going well (charging and otg cable)
Can I root the phone using stock recovery mode using (apply update through sd card)?
If the answer is no ..
Is there a chance that if i updated to lollipop that the usb will work?
Any suggestions to solve this problem?

You're able to connect to the computer as a media device and transfer files?
Look in the port with a flashlight to see if there's any obvious damage, or pocket lint or something.
Try a couple different microUSB cables, and try different USB ports on your laptop. Also try it on a different computer if possible. If none of that works, you're probably dealing with a damaged data port. In other words, you'd be out of luck (unless you're really good at soldering very small components, and have a high tolerance for risk).
You can't flash anything but full system updates through stock recovery. Updating won't fix a hardware issue.
You're in a bit of a catch-22: all methods of flashing kernels, apart from Odin, first require root access (flashfire, safestrap, kernel flashing apps), and you need to be able to flash an NCG kernel to obtain root.

I had the same problem it would charge correctly and it'd connect to the computer for a split second before it disconnected but would still charge and I thought it was the data port because my dog was clawing at my phone while it was on my couch trying to get her ball and I thought that messed it up i wound up having to reflash my ROM and do a full wipe everything but SD card to fix it but it did fix it so in my opinion upgrading would work but beware you won't be able to downgrade to 4.4 again if u do

It's worth a try. See if you can find a BOD5 update image. That would preserve your ability to downgrade to KitKat, since BOE1 and later lock the bootloader.
Sorry I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to the whole rooting process.
I decided to instel this rom on my note3:
3.4.111-f2fs-temasek.cm12.1-hlte-v1.69
CyanogenMode version : 12.1
So far I'm faily satisfied with the improvement, my phone is noticeably faster and has a lot more battery life.
But it seem like I lost all USB3.0 functions.
Usually when I plugged my phone in the computer the USB option would pop, and I could select "switch to USB 3.0", then I would get a warning saying my phone line wouldn't work while Usb3.0 was active or something along the line.
Well this option is simply not present at the moment, any way to make it work?
I kinda liked that extra speed sometimes....
I guess only stock note 3 has this function. CM and ports are not based on official note 3.
Sent from my SM-N920C
CM doesn't Support 3.0 Function!
It ... does, at least some kernels do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...nt/kernel-idlekernel-leankernel-fork-t3241582
Problem here is your Kernel. If your phone is a N9005, try this one and follow the manual to activate it in the OP of the thread I linked to: https://idlekernel.com/cm12.1/v7.1.0_2016_03_27/idleKernel-hlte-eur-7.1.0-cm12.1.zip
Damn I just finished reconfiguring and reinstalling everything, can I change the kernel and keep all my current rom and apps installed the way they are?
You will NOT get a simple messagebox though. You need a console based set up tool for USB 3.

Yes. Kernel is separate from the ROM.
Hello everyone,
I have wiped everything using the TWR recovery boot option in a really poor attempt to unroot my phone since it was behaving strangely.
Now it look like my OS is gone and the phone cannot be recognized anymore by my PCs even if I install the appropriate drivers manually.
Since it is no longer possible for me to attempt to flash the phone with a stock firmware using odin, I have attempted transfering the file on the phone using the sd card and installing it through the TWR recovery menu however it does not seem to be a possible option.
Does anyone have any advice to propose to restore the phone with a working OS?
It should still be able to load a recovery file from TWR, I am just unsure where I could get these since they differ from ROMs available everywhere else, I can also make change directly to the device drive using the file explorer so worst case scenario, I suppose it could be possible to copy past all the content of an image over there via the sd card.
Thanks
what happens when you put it into download mode and connect it to a computer? can you even get to odin mode? there is a way to ADB an OS onto it , but its pretty particular and usually not necessary.

The download mode seems functionnal on the phone, however the phone is not recognized by any PC which render it useless. My guess is that some files or driver on the phone side got deleted and it is no longer sending the right information to the machines it connects to.
Loading ADB into the OS seems like a neat idea, I didnt know it was possible. I am just unsure if flashing from within the phone is functionnal, my guess is that it probably work, but it is perhaps just a little riskier than doing it from an external device.
Thanks, I will try that, if you have any further advice, let me know
Edit : Oh I just realized you said to ADB an OS into it, yeah I don't thinks its possible, since nothing recognize the phone.
Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers on your computer? Tried a few different computers? And, more likely to be successful, a few different cables?

Yes, it also worked perfectly fine a minute before everything get wiped. I am pretty confident the only way to get it back working would be to copy the files into the phone manually, I am just unsure what files I should copy to the root since I have never seen how it usually look.
That's weird because I don't know of a way to wipe stuff in such a way to remove the capability of Odin connecting to a computer

Hmmm I went on cyaogenMod and installed it on my device using the sdcard. Unsure why the stock OS wouldn't work, but at least now the phone is functional.
The phone is still not recognized but it seems like it is slightly better, it now displays as Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). Which is better than getting disconnected right away from the computer. Now it probably just is a matter of fixing the drivers or the phone further since I have messed around a lot since everything stopped working.
Alright thanks a lot, it didnt occur to me that I probably could install other roms. Im still unsure whether or not I should stick with it but thats the least of my worries right now

have you tried a different version of odin? or at least a new download of it? does your computer recognize it when its booted up?
Hi all,
I'm facing a really strange & annoying issue ... I'm running latest OOS version, unlocked bootloader, TWRP installed, root via Magisk. & substraturm theming.
I uninstalled all my overlays, rebooted my phone and boom, here the deal : my phone won't boot at all.
I tried to press the power button for something like 30sec, nothing, not even a vibration.
I tried to reboot in recovery/fastboot via the volume keys + power button, nothing happens.
I tried to charge the phone, maybe I was running out of battery..? Nevertheless, nothing happens ...
I tried to reboot into recovery via `fastboot boot twrp-xxx.img`, but fastboot can't detect my phone as it stay totally powered off....
Anyone get a idea about the how to fix it & how it happend ? It's really annoying as I'm in travel and I don't get any extra phone ...
Thanks all
edit: Ho yeah, I'm running linux & I don't have access to any windows computer

You don't want a custom ROM. Fingerprint sensor doesn't work under custom ROMs at the moment.
Also trying to charge with the phone off with Magisk installed will give the perception of a brick.
You will need to jump through hoop to get the device to boot again.
Don't ever try to charge with the phone off with Magisk.

Actually not. With the latest, I guess one or two releases of Magisk this is now fixed. Magisk forces something other than a normal boot from a patched image. My Essential had the charging while off for a year and this phone up until I installed the latest release.
So you are correct current version of Magisk does not cause the issue.

That's odd.... It sounds like a driver issue with your computer more than anything. BUT, do you get an option to change to file transfer mode from your pull down menu? I had an issue where it wouldn't even give me that option, and what actually worked for me was to plug my 6T into a USB 2.0 port on the BACK of my computer. Try these things out.

Also, about the magisk charging thing? I've never tried to charge my phone while it was off with magisk installed, but that just sounds...... Weird!

Yes I get the option to change to file transfer mode. My computer only got USB 3.0 port, I'll try to connect it to a 2.0 when I'm back from my trip. Thx for the tips
@loganville did you try the 2.0 trick ?

Odd. Yeah these newer Android devices are just weird like that! I've been told the Pixel devices are just as finicky as the 6T and I'm sure others out there are as well! Glad you're able to get a connection on Windows though! [emoji106]
After 2 month or so I think I found the reason of the bug : tremble !
The bug occured since I did the last oxygenos update (at the time) - maybe it came from the fact that the update was installed on the second partition !
I gonna try to make the new oxygenos update (which will be installed on the first partition) to ensure that. I'll come back here once it's done !
It was that ! After a update to the last OOS (which was installed on partition A) I can finally access my internal storage from a usb 3 on linux
