I'm coming from a Mate 9 and Axon 7, so those are the most recent devices I have to compare to my ZenFone 4 Pro.
In general, the ZenFone is definitely louder than my Mate 9's dual speakers. Mainly, voices are much louder and clearer on the ZFone. I'm one of those people in the minority who give speakerphone loudness/clarity #1 priority in a phone evaluation. I listen to music out of my speakers all throughout the house and have Voxer conversations constantly working out in my shop. Headphone and bluetooth speakers aren't a valid option for me.
One thing I will say is that my Mate 9 seems to be better in the mid range/higher bass section than the ZPhone. I'm still playing with the EQ settings on the ZFone, but I think the Mate 9 is a just a bit better here. The ZFone's speakers can distort a bit at max volume with certain EQ settings set high.
Overall, not on the level of the newest U11 boomsoud, but better than my Mate 9, and WAY better than the Axon 7. I don't care what anybody says, the Axon 7's speakers were incredibly underwhelming. My Mate 9 put it to shame on sound quality and volume.

+ Quite loud!
+ Doesn't easily distort on high volumes
+ Uses earpiece speaker for stereo playback
+/- no true stereo speaker set-up
+/- earspeaker has got different frequency response than speakerphone, so the stereo image ain't very pretty. But at least they tried.
+/- pretty 'eh' midrange and absent low-range, like on most phones

I tested at the IFA, which was a pretty loud environment and volume was similar to my Axon 7 despite the V30 having only a mono side speaker. Clarity was good, less distorted than Axon 7 at high volume, but hard to judge because the environment was loud. I will wait for GSMarena#s audio testing.
Pleasantly surprised by the speaker. Gets loud enough but I wouldn't say particularly louder than any phone. Pretty good quality however.
Seriously speaking... this is probably the only "meh" feature of this phone. Glad to hear the simple mono set up is fairly good for what it is though.
I used the G4 H815 since 2015 and comparing, the V30 is not so loud or clear. The G4 gets even louder if over a surface with the screen up. The curve let to the speaker space to "create" some kind of amplifying "sound box".
The 3.5 jack on the top is also a minus for my kind of use and my car setup...

Problem during call
I'm having a problem with my phone. When i make call using earphones and then during call when i remove it then speakers of the phone doesn't work for 5 to 6 seconds. I was not able to hear the person on the call. Is it just with my phone or anyone else is facing same problem.
While it can get quite loud it's only a mono speaker with slight distortion on max volume. Considering the price its above average but nothing amazing.

Agree with you.
I use RE Equalizer to improve the quality of the external speaker. It's quite better, works with musical players, video players, YouTube etc.., and no need to root.

For me it's sufficient. If I want more I hook it up to my jbl charge 3.
Sound coming out of the single speaker is kind of thin but clear and loud enough for talking head videos and games. Bass is almost completely lacking, but hey... Use headphones for music.
Loud enough, but muffled sound (low clarity). The Honor 10 even with single grill has better clarity in my opinion. The only real downside of P20 sadly.
I have to disagree with everyone here and say I believe the speaker to be very good. I've owned all the latest flagships including P20 pro, s9, iPhone X, one plus 6.
The speaker in my opinion is very good for a single speaker. It's as loud if not louder than many and the depth and range of sound is good .
Obviously stereo speakers would be nice but this does not do bad for a single speaker.

Do you suppose that I have a defective phone since even without comparison to another phone (such as the Honor 10), I can tell the speaker sounds relatively unclear and muffled, especially in low-medium volume.

Same Loudness like S10+ But S10+ Sounds like Better compared to Note 10+.
On the N10+ the bottom speaker appears to be slightly louder. This is apparent at high levels. I suspect this is accounted for in its speaker design: the top speaker doesn't have the benefit of a big grill.
May I ask you guys where you were able to test this? Was this at Unpacked? What kind of environment were you in when you tested it? I hope its better than the Note 9 because that about half the volume of my iPhone XS. Barely could hear people unless at max earpiece volume, and playing music over the speaker was almost pointless unless in a super quiet room. Thanks!
definitely much louder than note 9, just upgraded from it to 10+
Not much but it is louder and with reacher sound. Spotify, phones near each other and same song resumed on bouth phones (best test for loudnes for me)! Btw I have note 10 (not +) but as I saw, bouth are the same with speakers.

much louder than my prior note 9 and s10 plus.
It's not the speaker phone quality thats an issue for me, it's the earpiece for taking phone calls. If your in a noisey enviroment, there's no way to hear the call, it's all low frequencies and no top end

well at full volume is very good but when I turn the volume down at about 30-40 percent it seems like it has some distortions not a big deal overall happy with it
It is loud android smartphone. Also it is clear too. Turn up full volume and hear this kind of songs. Loudness is great and when in low volume it feels like some distortions.
Loudness is on another level with V4A - very noticeable.
I think I will try out this device
This is a gem
With the 7T, OnePlus made the front-facing top speaker even beefier. So much beefier, in fact, that it needed to move the SIM tray to the bottom of the phone. Somehow, OnePlus managed to make the 7T even slightly louder than the 7 Pro. The sound was clear and clean with no distortion even at the highest volumes.
Meanwhile, Nightscape is now allowed on the ultra-wide camera. There is also a new Super Macro shooting mode that uses the ultra-wide camera to get really close to a small subject.
Speaker is very loud and nice, but I noticed that if you listen music with full volume then after few minutes volume turns down to ~70%.
