Just got the S8 for $420. Stoked!! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussi

So I unfortunately had to retire my Nexus 6P early since it started boot looping and I haven't been able to fix it.
Glad to see the tremendous progress being made. So far, I'm really enjoying the phone. The form factor is awesome!!

Welcome to Team Galaxy! $400 is a great price! Unfortunately I got mine on release day so I had to pay full price for it.

I see them advertised at $300 off now. That's huge discount for a 4 month old phone. Kind of make me wish I had waited but my S7 Edge was driving me crazy with the over sensitive screen.
Sent from my SM-T800 using XDA-Developers Legacy app

I just picked mine up yesterday. $17.50 a month but I will probably pay it off sooner. I can't wait to see what the devs come up with for this one.
Side note, had to retire my Z3V. No problems with it, just lack of support for the phone and being stuck at 5.1.1 for awhile made the decision an easy one.
Devs, please get the roms up and running for this one. I can't wait to unlock this phone's potential.

I just got one for $320 with all the accessories today. Debating on keeping it or selling. I had five S7's (all different) so I may just keep this one.

Is the N4 worth buying at this time?

Hey all, been rocking a Galaxy Note for about six months or so after unloading an iphone. Very pleased with my Note...love the screen size...but have to admit it's large size can be a bit of a hindrance at times. Have been seriously considering switching to a Nexus 4 which is what I originally wanted but was back ordered for too long. Problem is I'm torn on picking up what I believe is a great phone versus waiting another 6 months for the Nexus 5. I know the SG4 and HTC One are coming soon, but I have to admit, I really want stock Android without all the extra features which I find useless. Basically, is the N4 still worth purchasing? Or is it a foolish move this late in the cycle?
Thanks!
Htc One, not a major inovation.
Galaxy S4- they ran out of ideas.
I think the Nexus is still worth it, especially now, when its price went down a bit.
I was actually in a close situation about 2 weeks ago. I was basically up to get a new phone and was looking around for what to get. I wanted the Nexus 4 since launch, but my impressions of AT&T (the only provider in my area that is GSM) weren't good and I wanted to stick with Verizon. After months of waiting, I finally narrowed it down to waiting for the Galaxy S4 and signing a contract with the (again, opinion) superior service provider Verizon or switching to AT&T and staying off-contract with the cheaper phone with comparable specs. There was also the possibility of waiting for the next Nexus to come out (Nexus 5?) when it does.
Well, I decided on the Nexus 4 on AT&T and haven't looked back. I couldn't be happier. As far as Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S4 and HTC One is concerned, I am more than happy with my decision. The hardware is amazing, but the main reasons I'm so happy is the vanilla Android and the community. I love how Google really doesn't care about rooting and modding (it's like 1 or 2 commands in a command window to unlock the bootloader, that's awesome). Then there are forums like this that help you with stuff. Yeah, there are Galaxy S3 sections and they are helpful, but I just feel that the Nexus 4 forums are....I dunno...more friendly? more helpful? I don't know how to put it, but I just like the community better.
Now on the debate of getting a Nexus 4 now or waiting for the next one to come out. I actually liked being 6 months into the release. That way, you avoid back-order issues, and everyone has had time to develop and fix issues with ROMs and whatnot. 6 months in, all you have to do is read a "Nexus 4 101" sticky thread and they have step by step instructions for completely customizing/flashing/etc. it. I will probably continue waiting 6 months after release to buy a new Nexus phone for those two reasons.
Well there's my two cents. Feel free to consider it.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the insights.
Johmama, sounds like we're in very similar situations. After giving up on the N4 and going with the Note a few months ago, I made the switch from Verizon to Straight Talk. While it's not perfect service, it's 1/3 the monthly bill which allows me to forgive the occasional issue. That also is why I'm strictly debating N4 vs. N5 now. The purchase price of the Nexus line makes it very affordable compared to $650+ for the other options. Basically, by the time I unload my Note and accessories, it should be a pretty even swap, so cost isn't an issue. Just wanted to know if the device is still considered a smart buy. Seems like most are more than happy with it, so I think I'll make the jump.
Again, thanks for the help.
I came from the DNA, and was planning on just keeping this till ONE is released, but I'm keeping it. Sure I miss the screen size a bit, but I love this phone and am thinking I'm only gonna be a Nexus guy from now on. Its worth it. Also having good dev support is way cool

Sorry One Plus.....

Been waiting for a one plus 2 invite for a long time. I was #150,XXX in line and figured id get an invite back in August.
Ordered my 32 gig white 5x a few days after launch... Today I got my op2 invite but I'm not going to cancel my order for the n5x.
Even though it has 2x more ram the user experience of the op2 will be nowhere close to that of the 5x.
It's never going to get timely updates from the OEM and if it had a hardware fault an RMA will be next to impossible (search Reddit for one plus one rmas).
ha, same here just got my invite today..going to order the 5x soon..
I think I'm banned from their forums after I went on a tie raid tearing them to pieces after they released the specs and tore them apart on the nfc issue not to mention how what's her name was mad that they throttled the 810 instead of putting in the 808.
They turned what could of been a good phone into a pile of **** by using the 810 and not including nfc
Sent from my Nexus 5
I don't use nfc but I do have some serious concerns about the 810.
It seems like a problem chip and it will provide nothing more than buyers remorse to those who've bought 2015 flagships.
I got my invite too... I would have a few months ago, but not now. I completely forgotten about my reservation until I got the email. Chucked it into the trash after I saw it.
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
I ignored my invite too, sorry but I'm not playing your game for a "meh" phone. The whole thought of earning the right to pay full price of your phone is just stupid. Not to mention their shotty support and update history. The moto x pure and Nexus is a better deal and without the BS...
I looked at the oneplustwo too. Glad I didn't waste my time. The 810 scares me. And a company is going to "let me buy their phone"... I don't think so. I'm not on your terms as to when I buy your phone.

Oh man, the hype was so real for this phone and it ended up being a disappointment for many... I loved the OPO, probably the best phone I've had in my opinion, had a lot of fun with it and had a big development community. I don't think the OP2 is going to be as big as the OPO was, there's a reason why everyone is replacing them after 2-4 weeks of use, just check swappa how there are over 100 OP2s being sold lol...
Guess I goofed and entered the one plus forum by mistake.
Yeah.. It got my op2 invite the day before Google was slated to announce the new nexii. I was like, well played OP, but I didn't want your phone anyway.
One thing I really hate was the fact the invite is only for 24 hours. After waiting months for the invite you had to buy it then and there or wait for another invite. What if the person didn't have the finances at that time? (I did or else I wouldn't have gotten the 5X). It is like they are purposely making it hard to buy their product.
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
I got an invite a couple of weeks ago and ignored it. I bought the OPO a while back and found it pretty poor, quite a few problems - screen discolouration at the bottom, rebooting etc. so invoked their 14 day return policy. After sales support is dire - had to get PayPal involved to get them to refund in the end. Meanwhile my Nexus 5 (Jan 2015 model) has been brilliant - was in two minds whether to even bother with the 5X, but in the end I ordered a 32GB in white, at a cost of £349 ($534) - a similar price to the 32GB Nexus 5 when it was available.
Their invite system is terrible. 5x > OP2 anyway!
Without NFC and fast charging, OP2 is not worth it. I tossed my invite. The only gripe I have for the 5X (I ordered one) is the 2 gig RAMand no OIS. Why Google? Charge me $30 more, man. My wife just got a T-Mobile LG G4 for $480. I'm liking it a lot. The camera is really really good. I'll see how good the 5X is. I might return it, get the G4 instead

Had my nexus 5x for a few days and its awesome. Totally glad I trashed my one plus two invite.

Me too. Got my Nexus 5x on Monday 19th Oct and I'm very pleased with it. The fingerprint sensor works every time, the camera is amazing and I love the look of it. So pleased I ignored my OP 2 invite!
I actually own both. The +2 is an excellent phone in my opinion. If the development comes anywhere close to the +1 I will be content. The battery life for me makes it from 9am to 4 am with 27-35% left and 14 hrs of Bluetooth and 3.5 hrs of SoT.
That aside my X is a pretty nice phone to. Will have to agree that that FPS is dead on and quick af.
Got two invites and deleted them both. I had a one plus 2 and my 5x smokes it in every way.
I also have a +2 and its awesome. Might even give up my 5x since battery is not as good as my +2. Hate to do it since I've been waiting so long for this new nexus and now I have it but I gotta go with what works best for me and I'm afraid it may be the +2. Still gonna give the 5x a few weeks to come around. We'll see what happens.
This is also a concern for me. Like the op2 for size and battery and feel, just wished it got updates. Love the 5x but afraid battery isn't as long as op2

Upcoming deals

I'm sure I'm not the only one but when it's time for a new device the money in my pocket starts burning and I get more and more impatient with every new review/forum post I read. I have always went with the latest and greatest but am considering saving a little money this time and go with a tried and true instead. Was looking hard at the S7 Edge but man, they proud of that joker.
Would like to get back to tinkering as well and since we are on Verizon, the options are a bit limited if you enjoy that.
With the Pixels on the way, do you guys expect a sale on the 6p? Is that a normal thing with a new release? They are currently at $460 and $550 at Best Buy.
Thanks!
Ofcourse there will be a sale on the 6P - Wait and See.
But on another couple of notes. 6P did not distinguish itself other than a 5.7 inch device. I do not see the Pixel as a direct competition as that will be a 5.5 device.
On another note - the Note 7's will be coming up fairly soon as refurbished devices after they get their batteries swapped out and may offer better value for money - unless you're into the whole "Pure Nexus" "Direct Upgrades" thing.
Each to his own though - we tend not to keep devices even one year anymore

Who's gonna keep using their Note 7?

There's absolutely no other phone I want, so I'm seriously considering not turning my phone in and continuing to use it. Plus I'm not at all happy with the compensation of a $25 credit. What I would deem fair is allowing me to "use" an S7e or ANY phone I want until a suitable replacement phone (S8, Note 8, etc.) becomes available and then turning in the loaner for the better phone. Anyway... anyone else going to chance it and just keep on using their Note 7?

I really like the phone. But, it's not worth risking my life and property for.
Just got my replacement in the mail last Thursday. It's been working just fine. Doesn't get hot or anything with heavy use. I'm going to continue using my revised note 7 till they try to force me to deactivate it
Ive had a rough time getting a replacement, so ive been looking into the pixel xl or just snag a nexus 6p for cheap. Its not worth risking to me.

I'm going to keep mine because I have not had any issues and do not want to get a new phone. This mostly due to how terrible the corporate sprint store near me is. I had to go into the store 3 times to get a replacement.
The only problem (aside from the whole catching fire thing) is I doubt they'll be working on any software updates for the Note 7 now. No Nougut for the Note 7?
Sent from my SM-N930P using Tapatalk
I really wish there were better options out right now I would switch in a heart beat. Unfortunately there's nothing even close out right now or coming out in the next few weeks. If they force us to move on I'll probably go with the v20 or 7 edge.

I upgraded from a Note 3 to a Note 7. I need a Note with Micro SD card slot. I went on Ebay today and bought the best Note 4 I saw as a backup plan. I still have the original recalled Note 7 and plan to keep it for now. But like kstephens98 said, it won't get updates. And who's gonna wanna continue development here? I think I'll probably use the Note 4 until (hopefully) the Note 8 comes out. I just hope I can still get a full refund if it comes down to that. There's no other new phone out there that I would be interested in.
there is no competition.
i'll hold it until they have another fixed batch or until the Note 8.

As much as this comment exactly describes how i feel i have to return the phone. This is the hsrdest decision. Even harder than returning the first one cause last tine i knew it would be conning back. But it is now giing to be gone forever.
The main reasons are these
1) the phone cost $900. If i keep it i cannot get a new one probably ever.
2) development Will be non existent.
3) no resale value at all in the rare chance i could afford another one.
4) my husband will refuse to let me keep it even if i wanted to ignore 1-3
I was hoping for a new batch but from what I've read Samsung has officially dropped the note 7 all together.
Out the money for my case and have a gear vr which i cannot use. THIS SUCKS

Just an FYI just got this tidbit from Sprint Chat:
"Daniel M:*You can check the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with our Telesales team as the device is not available online and we are trying to get it back soon but any date is not confirmed."
was also confirmed by Telesales
If they get the note 5 back, I'd take that. I honestly don't think PHYSICALLY the note 7 is that different. On top of that, the Note 5 is honestly the best alternative. As sad as it is to say that a year old phone is the best alternative...it really, honestly is. I can deal without the USB-C, I can even deal with the lack of SD Card support(I haven't used an SD card in ages as long as there's a 64gb version). The water resistance would be nice...but after owning the S5, it was more.....convenient than anything. The "IF it drops in the water I don't have anything the worry about" feeling. I took underwater pics once just to say I did and could but....not like I'm gonna go swimming with that bad boy in my pocket lol.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, is the S-Pen. Unlike a good number of people, I actually use my....a lot. Which I find either people use it A LOT, or never lol. Anyway, if/when the Note 5 becomes available again, then I'll go back to that. But this Note 7 really was the PERFECT phone.
Water Resistance
S-Pen
AMAZIN screen to body ratio
iris scanner is way more functional than I anticipated
just the right about of edge on the screen
THE SCREEN PERIOD lol
the camera was near flawless in my opinion
everything about this phone......
If only Samsung wouldn't have rushed things. I think this phone would have beat out the iPhone anyway. Thing is, people who buy iPhones, buy iPhones. Getting them to switch is difficult because they're usually invested in apple products. iPads, Macbooks, lightning adapters, etc. People who buy Android phones are usually invested in it. Samsung people usually have Samsung Tablets, enjoy the gmail/google apps integration, enjoy the mass amount of free apps from the app store lol. This makes me want to cry lol
Went ahead and exchanged mine for an S7 Edge. It's a very nice phone too. Plus I didn't use the S-Pen like I thought I would.
In addition, Got two free gifts for my first note and my replacement note and now I've been approved for my S7 Edge. Three gifts, one purchase.
Anyone thinking of trading it in and doing the gift thing, sorry, it ended Oct 9th I believe.

ugh. I am going to call the corp guys tomorrow when I have time to ask what they are going to let me get away with. I am leaning like some others to the LG V20, but since it doesn't come out until the 28th it's outside a 15 day window. Would go without phone/phone payments and a Note 4 I pick up used for now if it meant using my upgrade later.
already sent my old phone back to them, as required to not get charged. So can't go back to that. After thinking about it, the S7 or S7E is a horrible choice since they will be replaced soon and then I'll be pissed I just got an old model.

I am going to keep using mine. There is NOTHING else that is even close to the Note 7. All of us who own the phone knows it is the sweetest one out there. I had considered the LG V20, but I would feel as though I had an inferior phone; judging by the reviews.
The reason I am here today is to root the phone to prevent Samsung from sending some type of kill update.

Would you still buy a PH-1? How does it compare to the Oneplus 5(T)?

Hi everyone,
As I write this the Oneplus 5T launch event is a day away, however the price of the PH-1 (at Telus in Canada) has now dropped to less than the Oneplus.
To those of you who have an Essential Phone .... would you still buy it again, knowing what you do now? Have software updates fixed the negative issues that were reported in initial reviews, especially wrt camera speed? If you were choosing now between the Essential Phone and the Oneplus 5T, which way would you go?
Any advice is appreciated.
I would especially buy it now. With essential seemingly coming around with their promise to be developer friendly, I'm hoping we see more and more developers hopping on board. Seems to me that this thing is just as open as a Pixel.
I would buy one again at the lower price.
I returned mine and got a LG G6.
If I hadn't bought the LG, I'd be buying the PH-1 at the lower price. It is now a bargain.
Seeing as i am beholden to a CDMA carrier (and not leaving anytime soon), and the PH-1 works just fine with my carrier of choice, the OnePlus doesn't register on my radar. Plus i lucked out and got my PH-1 for less than half..
If OnePlus came over to the dark side...
Just gave my One plus 5 away today after going from TMobile to Sprint. One plus feels cheap compared. Also I am a bit bitter the 5t is being released 5 months later.
I had the 6gb variant, no discernable difference, maybe it's me but the blur mode vs portrait mode were similar also. Also feels like OnePlus was in a school yard discussion with the top 3 and decided not to be an flagship killer this year.
With the latest fixes for ph-1, beta Oreo, and reddit feedback I'd say it's a home run at current price point.. plus f&f gets it for 300$.. hard to pass up

I'm thinking about this question as well. Oneplus 5T looks like Oppo R11 which I don't like. But essentail is not offical sell in China, which means I can't get warranty if I buy from Amazon US or somewhere.:crying:

Yep.
I wish I could have gottem a PH-1 for the $450 when I bought it.
The original price was just oo high for the initial issues. At $450 it's the bargain of the year.
I've been with Verizon since before they were Verizon around here.
I started out with GTE MobilNet. No, old jokes please.
Anyway, I'm not interested in any phone that's not fully compatible with Verizon and fully unlocked.
No.
I like OnePlus phones, bought the One back in 2014, amazing phone, my brother was using it this year until he broke it a few months ago. But, to be honest, I really dont like what OnePlus is doing as a company for the las few years, like put out "flagships" every 6 months, giving up support for older devices, waaaaay more marketing that is a factor to the increased price of their phones. I am sure the 5T is a great device, and it is what the 5 should have been in the begining, but coming out just a few months after the 5 is kick in the nuts to their loyal and enthusiast clients, and thats the second time they do it.
I really hated the chassis of my OnePlus 5. The edges are very rounded so it's a lot more slippery than the essential. I also didn't like how wide the phone was, making it uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time. Essential feels like it's the perfect size, and for ergonomics alone, I wouldn't go back to OnePlus (although their software is WAY better than essential's at the moment, I'm banking on essential improving).

Okay, so I've got a bit of a twist for you guys: first off, does the 5/5t not work on Sprint? I thought it was compatible... Second, I'm looking to upgrade my iPhone 6s, and am torn between the OnePlus 5t, Essential phone, and iPhone 8. I've heard bad things about the software on the essential phone. How bad is performance and camera really? I left Android because I couldn't stand how unusable my s7 became and don't want to go back to that
