Optimal Camera Settings

Currently using CM7 and I'm not really happy with the camera picture quality (with any rom). Not looking for another app to replace the stock one. I'm interested in tweaking the contrast, saturation, sharpness, exposure, and white balance to produce the optimal picture quality.
So my question is what settings are you using to produce top quality images from the camera?

I've pretty much given up on this phone providing a decent photograph. My BlackBerry Pearl took better shots tbh.

There is no such thing as optimal exposure and white balance settings. It depends on the conditions. For instance, increasing exposure will help in low light situations, but will make the photo look overexposed in brighter situations. Picking the white balance setting that corresponds to the type of light typically looks better than auto, but the wrong one will look terrible.
Taking good photos is an art, and it takes practice. Its not just a matter of picking a couple of catch-all settings.
Also, many poorly lit photos can be corrected after-the-fact pretty well using easy apps like Vignette or Picsay Pro.

Silly me, I want non blurry photos quickly and easily. It's a cell phone, not a high end standalone camera.
Snapping a quick pic of something is what a lot of people use their phone camera for. Having to fiddle with exposure, shutter speed, light balancing, etc every time is a pain.
Anyone know of a camera app that does better than stock for general pics?

Vignettes auto focus and auto white bal etc is pretty good, my choice over stock app, though it takes hella longer to process images as it doesnt compress them as much.
Although the number one cause for blurry pics is a fingerprinted cam lens, always give it a wipe once and a while.

Thanks, I'll give Vignette a whirl.
Re: blur, I guess I meant noisy more than blur. I keep the lens clean. The images just don't come out crisp/clean unless I'm outside and it's high noon with not a cloud in sight.

Camera 360
I tried the stock app on CM 6.1, Vignette, and Camera 360 all shooting the same indoor shot under fluorescent lighting. Camera 360 had the sharpest and best coloring of any of the three. I use it now as my main camera app. I don't know if it's the best, but it's the one I like the most.

What that person said, about the #1 cause of blurry pics being fingerprints, is hogwash. The main reason for blurry photos is an aperture that is too small, and ISO that is too low for the lighting conditions, resulting in the shutter having to stay open longer to capture the image. This allows more time for the camera or subject to move while the shutter is open, which causes a blurry photo.

Photos can also appear noisy or over-processed. This is due to the camera trying to increase the ISO (light sensor sensitivity), or manually increasing the ISO, to compensate for low lighting.
Point and shoot cameras try to do the work for you by automatically adjusting the aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. So the recommendation for a different camera app (which all handle these adjustments slightly differently) is probably a good place to start if you aren't comfortable making the adjustments manually (and its often not convenient).
But practice and understanding how cameras work goes a lot farther. You'd be surprised at how much you can improve your photos with simple tricks that don't involve camera settings. Just slightly shifting the point of focus can significantly improve the amount of light entering the lens. Or bracing the camera/phone on a stationary object (like a piece of furniture, or a building column) to create an impromptu tripod, can control the camera jitter just enough to get a less blurry photos in low light.

Interesting read, thanks for linking it. Although to clarify your comment, some of the options discussed on the guide aren't available on non-Sense ROMs. But those on Sense have all the options available.
Also interesting to see the Desire and Desire HD cameras compared side-to-side to the iPhone 4. I know the camera on the Desire Z (or even my older Touch Pro 2) is decidedly better than the iPhone 3GS. My wife owns a 3GS, and she is always commenting on how much better the photos taken by my phone are. But I know Apple made some improvements to the camera for the iPhone 4, so I was wondering how things netted out. While the Desire Z was not specifically compared, its newer than the Desire (and same MP), while being the same generation as the HD (but the HD is 8 MP). So I'm just guessing the Desire Z falls somewhere in between the two in photo quality.

Nothing beats the iPhone 4 when it comes to the camera and the photo/videos - I'm jumping ships when the iPhone 4S hits T-Mobile!

What i dont like about the cam is the noise. at first (scaled to fit the screen) it looks very good. once you transfer it to your pc and view the normal size, noise is all over.
any setting to reduce that? ISO?

I've got to say that the camera on this thing is the one thing I was disappointed with when moving from my Nokia N95 8gb. That thing had the best camera I've EVER seen on a phone, and I think it was a combination of a better sensor and a considerably better (and larger) lense. This thing takes decent pictures, and they actually look good when printing in like a 4x6 or smaller, but the quality overall is pretty disappointing. I've given up on getting better pictures out of it and just take what I can.

You have any proof to back that statement up? Because the side-by-side comparison in the linked guide above clearly shows the photos on both the old Desire, and the Desire HD are significantly superior to photos taken on the iPhone 4, for indoor conditions.
Hyperbolic statements, with no proof make you sound like Steve Jobs.

Cm7 already has a built in mod to allow you to take pictures in 720p and you can activate deblur fhor our unsteady hands. Its in the settings tab of the camera on cm7 just scroll down a little

Alternative App that makes best quality photos

Hi there,
As everyone knows, default camera app of sony sucks. I have tried a lot of alternative applications. For me the best results is from Snap Camera with settings 20mpx, camera api2, jpeg quality Best, opengl2, auto scene auto whitebalance, auto flash. These settings allows me to take much sharper images tested on my small facial hair. BUT! Camera is very overheating, after few minutes (5-6 shots) i have started sony camera and it alerted that camera is too hot, so it shuts down.
Snap camera allows HDR in 20mpx also any scene, its not limited as sony-s camera
Also snap camera produced the best images on my old low quality mtk based phone. So i recommend it, its paid but as far i know it have trial version.
I will be happy if someone will tell how is satisfied with this app.
PS.: FV-5 is worse, for my eyes.

in the play store info, there is setting for ISO. but why is there non when i check in setting...?

ive taken some kick ass photos in good light/ low light / bad light with the stock app. IDK what everyone is on about. but to each their own =)

In Auto mode or Manual?

Both.

Basically, when you unlock your boot loader, the great photo quality will be gone. If you have backed up your "TRIMM area" before unlocking it (where the DRM keys are stored), then you'll be able to get it back, by re-locking the BL, but this means you'll lose your ability to use costom ROMs, only modified stock ROMs are possible after that.
The reason for this is that Sony uses some pretty amazing software magic to get great pictures in low light (noise reduction algorithms) which aren't meant to be accessible for others to reverse engineer, so they lock them away with the DRM keys. So with a locked boot loader, the camera makes awesome pictures even in low light, with an unlocked BL, meh... (not so much any more)
Of course, these algorithms are only available to the Sony default camera app for the same reasons...

It will let you have scene's and HDR in 20mp, also it has more ISO options.

I've used FV-5 from the start and imo it's a lot better for me then the stock app. I can't work with the stock app that has limited control

stock camera is the only one...'cause of manual iso... fv-5 has good auto but you can't force iso 100, 200 and so on

Recently I have the Z3 Compact therefore not yet tried everything, but the camera does not seem anywhere near what they sold me in reviews. The original camera seems poor choices, the automatic mode leaves much to be desired, especially in low light because when you have a lighthouse in front can not interpret well and properly handle white balance and contrast.
I was testing the Open Camera app and gives me better results than stock. The only thing I use it now for the stock camera is for timeshift and sometimes for panoramic shots.

Thanks for everyone’s reply, I have figured out that another phones also uses that sensor and they make better pics, so probably problem is with sony's software developers who are doing a weak job. I am very addicted to zooming pictures and when I compare zoomed 5mpx downscale shot of lumia 1020 and 8 or 20mpx shot of Z3C, then shot of lumia is sharp and clear, full of details.... the shot of sony is like blurred and without details. So i think that they algorithm is wrong somewhere or they are compressing raw to too low quality and when jpeg is created then its final quality will be even worse regardless of 97% or 100% jpeg quality. Need to note that nokia's sensor is three times bigger in its physical size that captures the light.
But the video quality is epic i have never seen so good video quality from phone.
Currently i am waiting for availability of 5.1.1 in slovakia

TL;DR, it looks like the X will probably have a decent daylight camera that produces somewhat soft & noisy images in low light, with quick focus & decent colors but a so-so AOSP-ish camera app.
GSM Arena's hands-on review is one of the few with any camera samples or evaluation.

The image quality can vaguely be described as good. We could only test it indoors in poor lighting conditions. Considering the odds were stacked against it, we'd say the camera fared well and despite the lighting, the images are usable with good amount of detail and acceptable amount of noise. We'd like to test it more thoroughly in different lighting conditions but from our brief experience with it we are willing to bet the overall image quality is going to be pretty good.
The camera speed is also impressive. The camera launches and shoots quickly. The phase detection autofocus occasionally falters but is still quick even in low light.
The camera software is similar to the one on the OnePlus 2, which means it's really not very good. It follows the Google Camera app too closely, which honestly is far from user-friendly. There aren't many shooting options available and the app makes you feel like a novice who has just figured out how to take a picture. Those who want more control are bound to be left frustrated.
The camera app doesn't have any quick launch gesture by default but you can assign any of the capacitive buttons below the display to launch the camera by double tapping, but this only works if the phone is unlocked.

I have a z3 compact and I consider the X. Even though the z3c is, by many, appreciated for it's camera, for me, it's terrible. Mainly because of the freaking long time it takes to snap a photo (impossible to get a good photo of my kid). So I'd take a downgrade in "perfect conditions" for a faster camera that's reliable of snapping usable pics.
What do you reckon?

Hard to say. At this point we have very little information on the camera since no full reviews have been published.

Agreed. Who knows, with a bit of editing, the photos might turn out to be pretty good. My old HTC One V had only a 5mp camera, but it was really fast. In good lighting and with a little tweaking, it managed to take some surprisingly good photos. I think the OnePlus X camera will do just fine, especially for the price.

It's night outside, i used night mode with the app ProShot.
In normal mode :

The images look quite good. I wasn't expecting them to be that good.
How is the camera performing in taking quick snapshots? That will be my primary use for the camera.

Exactly my question.

Why do low light shots have so much noise in them? My Nexus 5 has that too, I'm sure there is a technical term for it; what does one look out for when buying a camera to avoid that? Is there a way to clean it up with software?

The main problems are a small sensor (collects less light) and sub-par lensing giving a high f-stop (lets in less light). The software has to compensate by increasing ISO (sensitivity of the image sensor), and that's what causes the noise. It can't be photoshopped out completely, and trying will always cause a loss of image detail.
What to look for: A camera with a large sensor, large pixels, low f-stop and image stabilization.

Best camera(quality) app for Lineageos and klte?

just as the title states,
what is the camera app that you found to take best quality wise photos with S5, I've noticed that stock lineageos app takes very unfocused photos and takes a lot to focus in video mode, also I tried SnapIt with works better but a lot of modes just crashes app and I also tried Oxygeon os v8 cam app and it just doesn't have many options, I can't even set photo resolution.
Please recommend me something better.

I now tested: LOS, CameraMX, Footej, OnePlus and Open Camera. Neither of these Apps could give me acceptable picture quality in low light scene. Is there any other recommendation? Maybe an App that is specialized in dark scenes? I don't care too much about features but about quality.

Thanks, in fact it's the best dark scene Camera of all. But still far away from Stock quality.
Made pictures of my room wallpaper with the monitor as the sole indirect light. Tested each Camera with and without HDR with automatic settings and no camera light.
On Stock Camera noise is extremely low and you can clearly recognize the muster. Taking pictures with this camera takes twice the time at least.
Snap Camera has a lot of noise but muster is still recognizable.
Open Camera has a little more noise but you can recognize the shadows/transitions a little better.
Footej and LOS Camera seem to be in about same league and far to dark.
OnePlus Camera is almost black even though I used the brightness adjuster (only in this App).
I know most of the Apps have a lot manual settings and a professional could most probably get more out of it, which might result in different ranking of the Apps. But I'm no pro like many/most phone camera users.
Clearly software algorithm of Stock Camera is on a totally different level for the S5.
While you can't see big differences in good light/scenes/situations, you can see it more as the light/scenes/situations get worse.

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Moto X4's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

With flash it's 5 stars. Works pretty good without. Works as good as my S8.

I took some test shots on my phone today, using 3 different camera apps:
- The Stock Moto Camera
- The Stock Google Camera from the Play Store
- Modified Google Camera found Here. MGCB_7.0H_C2API_Full_PXL2_v.1.4_60FPS_noburst_v3
I tested in a large room with the lights off, and sunlight coming in. There are lots of shadows and dark areas, as well as very bright spots. I tested with HDR Off, HDR On, and HDR Auto (if applicable). I also threw in a wide angle, for comparison. (spoiler: Ew).
Some things that surprised me, in no particular order:
- The Stock Moto HDR actually did a decent job at brightening up the dark areas, and giving the shadows a bit of color. Not a ton of extra noise, either. However, the window was still washed out.
- Stock Google Cam didn't offer anything the others didn't, and HDR On/Off didn't seem to do a thing.
- Modified Google Cam definitely helped with the bright spots, as those are the only 2 pictures that you could see out the window, but it also introduced a LOT of noise in the shadows and dark areas. This is a known side effect of HDR in low-light, as I saw the same effect on my 5x when using HDR+ in low light.
I may try a different Modified Gcam, and try to input the settings manually. Hopefully that will result in better pics, as otherwise the Stock Moto camera seems to be our best bet for now.

The stock camera app in normal picture mode is not using good ISO/shutter speed combinations in low light at all. Take some and check the info on your images. It always goes for high ISO and faster shutter speed. It stops on 1/15 A LOT, and seems to adjust ISO from there. Switch to Professional Mode and force a slower shutter speed, lower ISO and now they look much better. HDR on this app is garbage with those auto focus settings too. It works much better with higher quality images with less noise, which the auto focus is incapable of providing in any low light situations.

I did some more tests with the v4.0 AIO modified Gcam, and there wasn't a difference.
I went back to the v1.4, and took some pics at home. These were very low-light, with candles the only light source in the room. I noticed similar trends:
Stock Cam is VERY blochy when you zoom in.
Stock HDR seems to brighten the whole image, but isn't very, you know, dynamic.
Stock Cam is way less noisy/blochy when you zoom in. It preserves much more detail.
Modified Gcam using HDR+ does a MUCH better job handling the candle light in the pic, as the light source isn't overexposed.
I may do some 100% crops and share them tomorrow, but Stranger Things 2 with the wife is more important atm. #sorrynotsorry.

I'm using the manual Google APK here with HDR+ and it's also using very high ISOs, even in pretty good light. I have a lamp behind me, lights on in the room and both apps are using an ISO2400. If I manually set the ISO to 1200 or lower, I can still take a good photo by manually adjusting the shutter speed to 1/15, 1/10, or even 1/8 (anything lower and it's blurred). This HW should be capable of blazing fast auto focus so there is zero reason it's setting the ISOs so high. High ISO = more noise, less detail. Fast auto focus should mean that lowering the ISO in low light will focus better, faster, with less blur from the slower shutter speed. Something ain't right here.

Yeah, you're right on this. I did some more test last night, and the most consistent seems to be the modified Gcam HDR+. It preserves more detail while keeping the noise down.
Basically, I feel like these are all just playing around with settings and apks that are meant for other phones. I know the Gcam software can work wonders, and I know the sensor/ISP/DSP/CPU can support more than what the stock Moto Cam is doing, but getting a modded Gcam apk that's meant for out phones would be fantastic. Unfortunately, it'll take someone smarter than me to piece it all together.

Coming from a much older S3, the moto x4 camera is WAY ahead.
I have a small laser projector that only outputs 63 lumens.
The S3 camera could never get a photo on the highest setting.
The x4 camera does it easily.
Apples and Oranges possibly, but the camera is not nearly as "bad" as some
reviews stated.

Is it really? I'm choosing between the S7 and the X4, the camera being the only thing making me lean towards the Galaxy.

I had an S7 for work until recently. Hated it. Battery life is worse than X4, too much bloatware, and the fingerprint sensor on it suuuuucked. Rear camera was about the same as X4 but front was inferior. No contest. Get the X4.

Please think twice believing reviewers.
Most of them hated Moto X4's camera coz it has a sluggish and mediocre quality when it comes to depth (portrait mode).
BUT I can assure you that my Moto X4 performs on par with HTC 10 when it comes to ALL lighting conditions.
I took photos side by side and the quality is the same. I even found that the Moto X4 does NOT need to auto trigger HDR in the lowlight pic I took (HTC did auto trigger HDR).
Both HTC 10 and Moto X4 have minimal noise and really looks almost the same given that they are using a different ISP (SD 820 vs SD 630).
I'll try to upload both pics so you can check them as well.

The Galaxy S7 will definitely has a better camera quality BUT the X4 also has a pretty good camera so you won't get disappointed.
BUT I'd rather choose Moto X4 since it is a new device while S7 is already almost 2 generations older (S9 is coming).

Yes.

Four low light examples. They were taken in hostile lightning codtions by Gcam HDR+. No tripod. The quality and the dynamic range is at the same level as Nexus 5x, Pixel 1.

Can you share a gCam version that you use. And setting ...I try few, but for me quality of stock camera photos is better. Thx.
