I googled this when I first got the phone and it seems in Korea they make the phones so you CAN'T disable the shutter sound. (It is illegal)
My work around was to download a silent camera app from the play store for moments when you do not want folks to know you are taking photos. :good:
I rooted mine and changed the shuttersound.ogg to .ogg.bak no more sound.
I think I should root my note..
But I have doubts regarding some "secure" apps could not work cause they chek if the phone is rooted.. I m taljing about bank app, pay tv app (Sky in italy)..
Anyone have a experience with these apps?
Another question, for root permission I understood I have to flash a twrp recovery as well, true?
If one day I want to return "stock", is it sufficient to flash the stock firmware by Odin?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kmshack.mute
I don't know if it works on the new S8 Software, but on my Galaxy S7 with Nougat it works perfectly
In a few days i can test it on my Note FE
Try this!
No need to do any rooting to your Note FE
I live in Korea and there are a lot of application which disable the sound from stock camera.
Copy this word and check it out on ggplay

Read the instructions in the OP here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-fe/development/root-note-fe-t3648736. As rooting involves disabling sm-verity, you will not be able to use any app that requires a fully secure device. Remember to backup your device with TWRP before you modify it.
You can flash stock via Odin when you want to return. Bear in mind that you will lose whatever modification(s) you made to disable the shutter sound.

Try out this App. It will automatically disable/enable the system volume if you start/close the Stock camera or other Apps you have selected in the App Settings. You need no root for this App!

Then you really have not done your research.

Well see like the phone recording laws you have to go and look on a per state basis. Just because it can do something doesnt mean it is legal in all cases. Like many places require that you get peoples permission before taking phones at a public event. It all depends on your state.
Yes it is old. But that is on purpose. It was the basics for anyone that wants to know more to start off on.
Works perfect, nearly lost hope to get rid of that annoying shutter sound.

I hear the Note 3 will have this feature enabled for the s-voice, however, I'm not a fan of the s-voice.
Do you know if it's possible to have the always listening mode used with Google Now - and not have a battery drain. So replacing s-voice with google now.
I know the "always listening" mode is a feature of the s800 cpu, correct? So the app would have to be written to support the standby mode, correct?

I think this will come in time. Once we get root and bootloader unlock/loki good things will start popping up all over the place. I can't wait. In the meantime you might be able to launch google now using s-voice as a workaround :silly:

yea, I hear that. I agree 100%.
I love my tricked out N2 and have an upgrade available that will not affect my unlimited data that I can use to buy an N3, but I'm holding off for now to see how badly the N3 really is locked down.
I need root for sure as I need my hotspot, ADaway etc.etc.etc.
Since @rebel1699 gave AT&T users a way to expirence 4.4.2 and still maintain some control, I've loaded a few 4.4.2 ROMs. With just a cusary glance I don't see or feel much difference. I was hoping folks sharper than I would discuss this so I (and hopefully others might learn a thing or two). I do know they added a dir system/priv-app to store some apks, but don't know why? Maybe this could be answered first and get the ball rolling. Discuss.
U have to look in the perspective of what google thought at that time. Google implemented system/priv-app and this had to be continued by CM and other AOSP roms or else Google has all the rights to sue them. Only apks in /system/priv-app can use "system"-level permissions.(Thats what i think and i know. I might be wrong?)And as Touchwiz is just a skin ontop of Android, Samsung and other OEMs had to go with this.

Interesting observation. :good: Excellent start. One could expand on this issue as It relates to (Better, Worse or No Change). Maybe it could be disussed how this changes modding, etc...
Responses need not be technical in nature--although they are appreciated--opinions as to how you find the experience of using 4.3 vs 4.4 are greatly appreciated and informative.

KitKat changes the way apps can write to the SD card.
Does anyone know if you can still select the camera to save pics to external storage on KitKat? I don't have a card at the moment to test it out and would like to know before I give this phone to my wife.
Oh and BTW, my phone just updated to NB1 from MK2 by itself, I did not select anything to ok the install, just heard a noise on the phone and looked and it was installing.

It's horrible for the user. Look at this link.
http://www.ibtimes.com/android-44-k...plained-root-access-fix-now-available-1562147
The way I was able to get the functionality back was by rooting (which is somewhat a pain on NB1) and using this method here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
I had to use method 2 since safestrap has issues flashing stuff to NB1.
Apparently this app also fixes it, but I haven't tried. But it still requires root.

A vote kinda says it in a nutshell!
So far, basically we have these diffetences:
1. White status bar icons.
2. Camera shortcut on lockscreen
3. Restricted access to microSDCard in 4.4.2 (and we learned how to regain access)

I am interested to learn this as well. For a casual user, it looks very similar.
OK guys, let's get specific! If 4.4 is better than 4.3--why? If it's not--why? Come on, share! I really think we need to stop taking so-called uprades for granted! I've seen guys/gals almost in tears over losing their custom recovery (MK2) or access to their microSDCard (that btw, cost people their hard earned money). Remember what the commercial sez "knowledge is power!" I believe that is part of what xda was founded on--discovering and sharing knowledge. I know good people from around the globe have increased my knowledge and enriched my phoning experience (if "phoning"is a real word) Instead of just taking all the time, I'm trying to find away to help out however small. I have had the pleasure of communicating with all types of phone enthusiast and am better for it! Give a little--take a little--Discuss!

If you enjoy the idea of owning your phone instead of it owning you, I encourage you continue reading everthing you can. Though there are a few people with poor communication skills-shall we say-the vast majority of the folks around here will help you learn and get the most out of that expensive rectangle you bought. Read one of those "everthing you need to know for noobs threads"--they are well done and will get you started out right. Enjoy my friend!

Actually, one of the reasons I was interested in the update is because I can't get Hyperdrive to work properly. I don't want to derail this thread, but I posted in another thread with someone who was having similar issues with Hyperdrive. If you get a chance, and have a second, please check out this thread. I really love Hyperdrive, but if I can't get it to work, I am thinking about just unrooting and upgrading to kitkat (but I would rather use Hyperdrive). Thanks.

Thanks to the folks who contributed. I learned few things and I hope others did as well. Off topic -- I even got a chance to actually help someone with a significant problem. So, thanks for that--it's nice to be the helper rather than the helpee for a change.

My AT&T S4 says camera pic to SD card and I am on NB1 4.4.2 It says it to Storage/extSdCard/ DCIM/ Camera Pictures camera takes are in there on my SD card. Have you gone into Camera settings and at bottom of list STORAGE is set to Memory Card, Not Device. Just keep hitting the Setting icon on each screen until you get to screen with Lacation Tag Review etc.
Hello everyone.
I recently purchased the Divoom Aurabox.
It's actually a Bluetooth Clock/Speaker with a LED panel.
The functionalities and LED Panel are controlled by an APP on the smartphone.
I feel like it's a really poor APP, with not so many options (taking aside the fact that it's poorly designed)
Thought of redisinging it, give new functionalities and making it easier to use.
Has anyone modded/hacked the app or the Aurabox? If not, Is it possible?
Thank you!
UP!
I think it has awesome capabilities.
Just tell me if it is possible or not, and i will start trying myself !
Hi Guys. Any luck on that. I would love to send custom notification to my Aurabox.

Yeah... They were even advertising the Aurabox as if it had features it didn't
When I contacted them, they changed descriptions/images.
And, well, the APP... Is one of the worse chinese-ports I have ever seen.
Just a brightness slider control would make me happy, since the "shake mobile, change into 2 brightness" is not enough. Try to use this with the lowest brightness on a dark bedroom. Impossible to sleep.
I've bought the new Timebox. The device is neat but the software is a peace of crap lol !
What will be nice is that the device itself get an open firmware...
I just got one of these for cheap. I was really hoping there was some way to get custom notifications on it. Does anyone know if there's an app for it?

I've written a small program using RFO BASIC. I've also created a demo video. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to post external links here (as a new user). But if you want you can search for bigboss97 (user name) and TimeBox on YouTube. You will find some hacks videos there. Good luck!
I recently read that the TimeBox can record Audio/Morph. Can the TimeBox Mini or its APP store audio clips? As in, can the TimeBox be Bluetooth-ed to a vehicle (hidden inside the vehicle) and monitor the calls, notifications, sounds ect.

Hey guys, so the question is simple. Should I or should I not? At least not for a month or two.
I've had this habit of tripping knox after 1-2 months of use ever since the Galaxy S5. But now I've been missing all my purchased root apps and especially the v4a. However, what I'm worried about are those few issues poppin out after some time like what happened with the S7e. So I'm torn between rooting or not.
Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
Edit: So here are the few things you guys have shared (so far):
* Rooting doesn't void warranty: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty
Few Alternatives for staying unrooted:
* TitaniumBackup Alt: Helium
* Adaway alt: Adhell. Also, samsung's own browser now supports extensions and you can download an adblock for it.
* v4a alt: none atm
* xposed alt: none atm
* expanded reboot menu: none
* doubletap statusbar to lock: none
Thanks:

I didn't have Samsung since S6 which was disaster, then I had two iphones: 6s and recently 7 respectively. Now I moved back to Samsung, as I bought S8. Personally, I find rooting useless at least for now. There aren't any major/valuable tweaks available around. Unless you really want that V4A (which is overrated in my opinion), then don't root it. I rooted my S6 after about 3 months. What I would really like to see is a stereo mod that would enable front speaker to play music.

This is a great article, I also got on different conversation before regarding this. Some are claiming that they are still able to claim their warranty after tripping knox (like the artile also said) just as long as the issue is not related to it but some says differently so I'm not confident enough with the claims. Let me try to ask the CS here in my country.

Root Explorer - The My Files App isn't that bad. Only thing you really miss is the ability to edit root folders, which what do you need that for?
Adblock - AdHell on Samsung Galaxy Store. Uses Knox to block all ads on your phone. No need for rooting for this anymore.
V4A - can't help you here
Titanium Backup - Samsung and Google do a pretty good job of backing up all my apps. Only thing I really lose is the data from the apps.
All in all I don't root anymore due to the best abilities of the phones coming with everything I have wanted. Sure, I could customize a slight bit more with a rooted phone, but the downsides of rooting - being a flashaholic, worrying about tripping hardware mines, bad ROMs, bootloop, etc. - are enough to make me stay away now. I get everything I want from the Samsung phone the way it is now.
I can't believe I just wrote that! I have been rooting for years now. What is wrong with me!!!!

Nevermind, apparently the one we can download from galaxy apps is outdated, just updated adhell from playstore and now I can activate it. Haven't tested it yet tho.

I have been rooting for years. Now the only reason I would do that is Beats Audio. Much, much better than V4A

This posts was what i've been looking for...I haven't pulled the trigger on the S8 because i'm still debating to get snapdragon or go international with exynos. My main concerns for root were adblock, titanium backup, and the lack of ability to do a nandroid backup. I've been searching for good alternatives
im under the same dilemma of whether to root or not, i have rooted all my previous phones from the s2,3,4,5,6 and the s7 edge. Now im actually considering not rooting this phone. The main things i used to root the phone for were
1) adblock - but as mentioned im going to try adhell when i get the phone
2) Titanium backup - Havent found a great alternative for this however a few people have recommend Helium
3) GameGuardian - Cant help but hack pvz2 and others when they keep asking you for money for gems/coins
4) Xposed - a)Currently using a mod for the AOD on the s7 edge which lets me set custom pictures on the phone which is amazing,
b) XtouchWiz to auto expand my audio group when pressing the volume button, havent found a replacement for this either.
But rooting would cost me the Iris scanner(need this thanks to the horrible position of the fingerprint sensor) and samsung pay(not that big a deal) and of course warranty.

Haha, thanks for this. Unfortunately adhell doesn't support our S8/+ just yet. Maybe you guys are right, there is not enough reason to root, thanks for the suggestion guys.

I would say if you don't have to "don't root." My main reason for rooting is to get my mother language (font) on my galaxy which usually is only done by root + ifont.
I've come from a rooted Nexus 6P. I still use Power Toggles because it allows one touch location switching. I also use Lux and Llama for automation. Anyone know of good alternatives without root?

You can now set a picture of your choice on AOD - but if you mean behind the clock, that is not yet possible. Though still nice to be able to use your own photos.
Also, the volume rocker now at least lets you choose whether it controls the ringtone or media by default. I changed mine to media as I set the ringer to a specific volume and normally leave it that way, but media I change all the time.

yes but nothing like what i have right now. Currently I have a folder with images and it changes the image automatically every 1 hour. Also all notifications that come in scroll on the bottom of the screen not just a stupid icon of whatsapp.
Please download adhell from Google Play.

The app looks better.
Anyone?
I believe it's pretty much the same except for that wide angle option.
I don't think we can use it on our N9's. I'd love to use it for that color pop selfie focus thing
someone needs to port it

Speaking of ports I always found it funny that folks would go through hell to Port another phone's camera like gcam but won't try to poet and upgraded version of their own such as this
Seriously thats true... it's much easy too. Should we start a request to dev thread or something.
the Instagram mode would be the main reason to port for me. would the port be possible?
Do we know any dev to whom we could ask for
I mean the mods skim and monitor these threads supposedly but they probably won't tag the people they know probably know how to Port stuff
Still wondering about this one.... Like... Gcams cool but can we get a port of our own updated software? Please?
I couldn't agree with you more.. Please any mod reply to our concern here.
here it is:

that's the spirit!
I have not done a port in years. Always use to port things for my own amusement and development but after playing with the S10 camera I actually wouldn't mind it on our device. I will give it a try but I can't guarantee anything.
thank you soo much for the reply. hope you do it.. and thanks again for your help.

The Galaxy 10's camera allows you to make videos in HDR10+.
So I'd like them to port to Note 9.
First of all the S10 camera has hardware specific features. Secondly, the Samsung camera app is a system app that integrates throughout Samsung's OneUI allowing it to be used from within several Samsung applications seamlessly. Without root or the ability to first remove the stock Samsung camera, you can't install another Samsung camera whether it's ported or not, it won't be allowed to install and be given the system-wide permissions that are required for the camera to function the way the stock N9 camera does. Porting isn't the issue. It's getting around root, kernel DM-verity which will automatically prevent the phone from booting once a system app is modified and it's signature no longer matches. From my experience with this, it's simply not worth the time or effort since we have locked bootloaders and no reliable root method or ability to flash a kernel with DM-Verity disabled which would allow sytstem apps to be modified and/or replaced such as the Samsung Camera.
