Always Listening Mode - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hear the Note 3 will have this feature enabled for the s-voice, however, I'm not a fan of the s-voice.
Do you know if it's possible to have the always listening mode used with Google Now - and not have a battery drain. So replacing s-voice with google now.
I know the "always listening" mode is a feature of the s800 cpu, correct? So the app would have to be written to support the standby mode, correct?

I think this will come in time. Once we get root and bootloader unlock/loki good things will start popping up all over the place. I can't wait. In the meantime you might be able to launch google now using s-voice as a workaround :silly:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... Re-routing "Hello Galaxy" to pop up Google Now instead of S-Voice...
I need an app guy. LOL! Could be a good app to make money on!

doesn't look like that's' ever going to happen with the N3 unfortunately.
safestrap maybe, which is good enough for me but we don't even know if that will happen.

why not "ever" happen? You mean the bootloader? I have an s4, and the bootloader is locked, but we have loki...
Is the n3 not going to be a popular device? Maybe that's why we wouldn't get it? I couldn't imagine running a phone without a custom recovery and ROMs

yea, I hear that. I agree 100%.
I love my tricked out N2 and have an upgrade available that will not affect my unlimited data that I can use to buy an N3, but I'm holding off for now to see how badly the N3 really is locked down.
I need root for sure as I need my hotspot, ADaway etc.etc.etc.

This is what makes S Voice special

So many people/blogs all keep saying its just a copy of Siri or that voice command is useless. But what's new is that this is active all the time. E.g. You can answer a call, snooze alarm etc with just voice and no need to start an app.
AFAIK this is a first. So many things can be done and it will only get better.
Is it really completely handsfree???
Thats what I also thought when samsung described the S-voice.
But then after watching all the videos, I reckon its not completely handsfree.
For example for the lock screen, you need to first press the power button or home button to get the screen on, and then say the command to unlock it.
Correct me if I am wrong.

i was wondering this and they made it sound like its completely hands free but that would be too good to be true probably unless it affects battery...

fair enough. but this is funny because reminds me a bit of apple - and how they said siri will only be on the 4S because the artificial intelligence algorithm requires at least a dual-core processor and what not. next thing you know it gets hacked and runs flawlessly on an iphone 2g
i would say, it's good, that the device has a lock-screen mode too, because when i have it in my pocket, i'm not interrested in starting programs or calls
but the S Voice will be for sure an awesome feature - i hope it will work for all languages fine
and about using it on different devices - i would imagine, that it could end in a developer <-> producer ping-pong same like siri?!

This would also explain why it Says something about network and not doing anything on the wifes Nexus, as I was sure it was working before
Has anyone tried to change their build prop to mirror GSIII ? and see if it works then, I would but the wife would have fit if I messed with her's
it is a shame it doesn't work anymore on my One X, but I don't blame Samsung for disabling it. I'm about to throw down $700 on this phone so I want it to keep its exclusives as much as possible haha.
Other than that, I would feel bad for all those people that worked together to integrated it only for it to get pirated.

Have we obtained root? Can I help?

Do we need help getting root on this phone, or is everything the same as the international version? I have my phone in hand, if anyone needs system dumps or anything like that.

No, because then who are the dumb a$$es going to blame and bug if it does not work, or breaks something.
Not a smart idea for a dev to post something that they are not sure of, and possibly have people lose faith in that developer. I know as a dev I would not post ANYTHING, that I was not sure if it worked or not. Even if I did it on a test unit, and not a retail phone.

Send me the stock boot image please so I can root it.
Mark.
Unless you're going to install a custom ROM, it's not as important anymore to root these phones.
The SIII lets you uninstall [disable] almost any stock app you want.
After disabling a ****-load of stock apps, I am getting awesome battery & performance from my S III.
I'd like to see some theming and custom ROM's and overclocking though of course.

Eh, that's debateable. In the end it boils down to what you want to do with the device. For me? I want root so I can reinstall Cerberus to the System folder so even if someone wipes my phone, I can still track it. Can't do that without root.

Actually most of the AT&T stuff can be disabled. The only thing I really can't disable is AT&T Address Book. Other than that? Every AT&T App (all 5 of them) was able to be disabled.....so I'm not sure what you speak of.

Yea, this is actually the first AT&T Smartphone where I haven't cursed them out for the amount of bloatware installed. Granted I did immediately load Apex Launcher to tide me over until I can install CM9. I hate how touchwiz looks, but that's not AT&T, that's Samsung. This thing honestly speeds along, especially with websites. I'm also apparently in an LTE test area.....with a piss poor signal I was pulling about a 20mbit download and 13 mbit upload. I have to say, it's faster and more responsive than my GSII with CM9. That's impressive considering it is running TW.
Also from looking at his posts he did order it....so he could be using the GNex until he can. Though this pretty much is the GNex....just not running stock Android.

Remove or increase recent apps limit in Nougat

Nougat brought with it a cange to the recent apps where, for some reason, they remove apps from the list when they feel like it, for reasons I can't tell. For example, one of the last apps I use before going to bed might not be on my list anymore when I wake up. This feature is not making navigation easier for me, when it randomly cuts my recent apps to ~4-5. Any way to remove the feature, or turn the limit up? Stock Nexus 6P. Link to what I'm talking about for those, like me, who hadn't heard of this before. Except, unlike the 7 they discuss, I get even less.
Yes, I am having the same problem as you and I don't think the developers understand how annoying this really is. Very frustrating and I hope more users complain. I have four apps that I use daily and out of six apps in the list, guess which four get "cleaned" out? Yes, the most important ones of course. I even tried using the "Lock App" feature but it had no affect - the 'locked apps' are still being removed. I've heard the reasoning being that 'most' users do not clean their list and it builds up to quite a few apps in there. So they've dumbed it down to the point where the Recent Apps list is virtually useless. It's supposed to keep 7 apps in the list, but that has not been my experience however. As I said, I had only 6 and it removed 4 of them. I don't know why they didn't make this "clean" feature an option instead. Then we could enable it if we're too lazy to keep it clean ourselves.
Annoyed and frustrated in Canada.

Remove ads on 8.4 with Brevent

As the title states I setup brevent on my phone I was able to remove the lockscreen ads by 'breventing' the "Amazon Offers" system app.
One should also note the brevent takes some effort to start (needs a computer) but it stays on as long as you don't restart your phone.
Instructions:
You will have to go to settings and enable "show all apps"
Lock your phone, swipe away the ad, and voilia. no more ads.
There is a possibility that it may suck your battery... or it may improve it... I'll follow up after a few days
It is a shame that people update their phones before checking to see if they should or not. If you want to root or flash a phone, NEVER update it before researching what the updates do.

Good news, the battery life is about the same. And maybe it's just my imagination but the phone seems slightly snappier.
For those of us who messed up and updated. This seems like the best option this far.
PS. If it works for you, you should probably donate to the developers of brevent (I am in no way affiliated to them but this has been a lifesaver for me)

I googled this when I first got the phone and it seems in Korea they make the phones so you CAN'T disable the shutter sound. (It is illegal)
My work around was to download a silent camera app from the play store for moments when you do not want folks to know you are taking photos. :good:
I rooted mine and changed the shuttersound.ogg to .ogg.bak no more sound.
I think I should root my note..
But I have doubts regarding some "secure" apps could not work cause they chek if the phone is rooted.. I m taljing about bank app, pay tv app (Sky in italy)..
Anyone have a experience with these apps?
Another question, for root permission I understood I have to flash a twrp recovery as well, true?
If one day I want to return "stock", is it sufficient to flash the stock firmware by Odin?

Read the instructions in the OP here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-fe/development/root-note-fe-t3648736. As rooting involves disabling sm-verity, you will not be able to use any app that requires a fully secure device. Remember to backup your device with TWRP before you modify it.
You can flash stock via Odin when you want to return. Bear in mind that you will lose whatever modification(s) you made to disable the shutter sound.

Well see like the phone recording laws you have to go and look on a per state basis. Just because it can do something doesnt mean it is legal in all cases. Like many places require that you get peoples permission before taking phones at a public event. It all depends on your state.
Yes it is old. But that is on purpose. It was the basics for anyone that wants to know more to start off on.
