This morning Kies was telling me my device could not be updated, but I happened to check this evening and a new notification appeared saying that the JM1 update mentioned in a previous thread was now available - I was on the stock O2UK JF1.
Having installed the update, the GPS button in the pull down task bar is a new thing plus the new Samsung task manager, although these have been mentioned in the other thread already. The task amanger shows how much RAM you've used out of 326MB, but early signs are that it's no more efficient in freeing up RAM than was the situation on the JF1 ROM I had previously. Still I'll see how things go tomorrow. Having said that, the task manager widget is quite nice.
The Samsung App store also seems to be working now, as it kept giving me error messages on the old ROM. There's a 70MB full and free version of Asphalt on there which I'll download tomorrow. Another definite improvement is the music player, which previously couldn't handle the 1000+ artists in my digital audio collection. In fact it used to force itself to close when I pressed 'Artists' before. Now it's listing all the artists and grouping all albums/tunes for each artist correctly.
Apart from that I haven't noticed anything else so far, although the phone's reception might be a bit better, but I can't confirm that yet.
hi are you on O2 contract?

Yeah, I'm on a full 24 month contract with O2UK, and I bought the phone directly from them.
As an update to what I said at the start of this thread, I now realise I had test mode activated when I used Kies to update my phone, so this may not have been an 'official' O2UK update after all. It seems test mode doesn't turn off when you close Kies: CTRL+U+P is in fact an on/off toggle for test mode. Nonetheless, the JM1 update I got has all the O2 stuff I had before and settings, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's on an O2UK contract with an older stock ROM as it's better for all the reasons I mentioned previously.
I've also noticed that the new stock task manager in the Kies JM1 update doesn't seem to allow the phone's RAM to drop below approx 50MB (or 275MB/326MB). On my previous stock JF1, Advance Task Killer often showed that free RAM had got down to approx 30MB on some occasions, which was when things really started getting noticeably laggy. Now when I leave open 10+ applications, the RAM used won't go beyond 275MB/326MB, which suggests the system is closing background application/services automatically at around this mark to maintain performance. I might be wrong on this, but so far I haven't seen the same lag issues I had before with black screens lasting 5 seconds or more, but others might need to confirm that
The only thing I don't quite understand is what the coloured green/yellow bar is for in the new Program Monitor widget, although the active applications count in this widget is really useful.
Coloured yellow/green bar shows that there is no battery draining app is running at the moment. It will change the colour if there is one or more battery hungry apps are running.

could anyone post the firmware with the option to flash it via odin please?
i just upgraded to this jm1 from stock jf1 i had to also do it in test mode as it wouldnt allow me to update otherwise
i have since used gps test and it locked on to sats much quicker and also more of them this was also done whilst indoors
so i dont if this update helps gps.
i dont know how to full test the gps but if someone gives me a how to i will post the results.
so you all to decifer
but it seems better to me with this update.

Same here, mine came up with the "this phone cannot be updated" crap. I'm still going to install the lag fix though, it made a huge difference with the jf1 firmware.
I'm trying to track down some wlan_rx_wake issue.
My understanding is that what is supposed to happen is that multicast is normally enabled when a device is awake, or perhaps with the screen on, but when the screen blanks, or more likely the system suspends, the broadcom chip is set to ignore multicast
This allows the device to sleep peacefully without being woken up by local lan broadcast traffic.
Does anyone know if the stock samsung 4.3 kernel (J9/VIA) does this?
How about alternative kernels/roms - do any explicitly enable or disable this?
It may also be an app that has the multicast lock... but I've disabled all apps I can with this permission leaving just stock samsung apps that can't be disabled. I can't root as I need sky go. I'm reluctant to replace with non standard rom due to knox, but will consider it (I've replaced firmware many times on other devices inc. s3)
The reason I ask is on my local lan I was seeing my S4 (and note 10.1) have this wakelock active for far too long. I've now removed most broadcasts from the network (most were netbios related!) and this wakelock is well under control now (6 minutes out of 1:16 isn't bad). However I have the same issue in the office where I can't fix the lan....
One way or the other I have a suspicion this is an oversigh in samsung's 4.3 rom.
I should say broadcast more generally....
So far the only mentions I can find are
- This modified 4.3 google edition kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342298&highlight=multicast+suspend
More battery life tests and use of Better battery stats etc, along with network traces rather convinces me this is an increasing problem. At home I have some control over my network. at a place of work, less so.
Public wifi access points are usually ok as inter-device broadcasts are blocked. But home with uPNP, lots of devices doing arp requests etc is nearly impossible to manage - though I did cut mine down by about half. I'm looking at whether ddwrt could help with some filtering in a seperate wireless AP just for the phone/tablet!
The only real fix is for the device to implement filtering, which from the kernel source it looks as if it might but the only way to try for sure is either to root (breaking sky go) or do a custom rom (breaking KNOX, and possibly sky go). I wish I knew if there's some app/config causing my broadcast filter not to be active, or if it's a samsung kernel build choice.
I've continued to see this across my S4 (4.3) and Note 10.1 (4.1) running official samsung roms. It's been frustrating as it equates to sigificant power drain.
My sons' nexus 5 / 10 does not show this issue.
A few days ago I decided to flash a port of OmniROM 4.4.2 onto my note 10.1 . Same network, same apps - the problem has basically gone. There is still some wifi wake time but nothing like the amount previously.
My guess is the omnirom/aosp kernel is correctly filtering broadcasts, or just maybe it's because it's missing some samsung bloatware.
Possible fixes on the S4 are more awkward
- Any rooting, flashing a non-official rom etc will result in a KNOX 0x1 flag. Not really an issue to me, but annoying
- Whilst I *love* Omnirom on the tablet it may not be stable enough for phone use yet
- The samsung S4 camera is very good. Much better than alternatives
My current thought therefore is to
- hold out for samsung s4 build to see if the issue is addressed
- If not try rooting and disabling all samsung bloat, and try alternative kernels (if any) on the TW rom
- if all else fails consider OmniRom or CM11 , or Samsung's GE rom (by this point KNOX will be tripped anyway)
ANy thoughts?
Anyone else seeing this issue?
Any kernel devs care to comment?
So another check. Phone sat idle for an hour, of which 47 minutes was awake.
Apps did account for around 13 minutes of this - the big proportion being skype which I just installed earlier today. What a surprise. That's getting deinstalled (again), but most of the rest was just wlan_rx_wake ie the device being woken up to deal with packets. If asleep that should be minimal, as it is when running 4.4 on the tablet, yet it isn't - clearly samsung are not implementing the broadcast/multicast filter on sleep. AARGGH
I'm slightly bemused I see so few people mentioning this. Is it that they don't look? Don't care? Or is it just me......
I'd be tempted to do a complete reinstall... it would be a lot easier if I could easily backup (titanium backup or CWM backup) yet do either and I trickt the KNOX switch. thanks Samsung. Not. It's not a big deal as everthing is cloudified, but it would cost me a few hours getting things setup again, even things like the desktop layout ...
So is anyone using an S4 on 4.3 and NOT seeing this issue when on wifi (with multiple devices around) ? If so, just perhaps I'll try a factory reset, but I already did that coming from 4.2 anyway. Or perhaps you are using a custom rom/kernel and not seeing this or noticed it improved?

Still on stock rom, and still puzzling this.
Most samsung value add that can be disabled in a stock, unrooted rom, is.
Yet a wireless network packet trace (run on an attached PC) shows a significant amount of activity - not being *received* by the phone, but actually being sent
Packets like this show up around every second! Hardly surprising the device is kept awake a lot

In fact in 10 minutes idle this was pretty much the only traffic to or from the phone!
This looks very chromecast-ish -- which I don't have. presumably it's something screen share related from samsung -- even though no devices are connected/setup to cast screen
This must also be from a non-disable-able app - but I'm unsure how to categorically pin it down without root access
I've actually been here before on my note 10.1 - where my resolution was to switch to omnirom. That's less easy on the S4 due to knox concerns, and camera & other more esoteric features (spen is fine with omnirom on the note 10.1!)
Went through trying to kill processes/tasks that I could (I'm not root) and nothing stopped these SSDP broadcasts.
Checked settings - no changes made any difference.
Played with adb shell, dumpsys, logcat & finally ddms - but no jobs.
Wish I could find out the process that is initiating these packets!
An update.......
I decided to try one more time with the stock 4.3 BTU rom and did a full factory reset
WIth no google or samsung account, and no apps I had no wlan_rx_lock
I then configured google accounts (inc. gmail etc) with sync and added only minimal apps (zedge, chrome, mysms, kii keyboard)
still no wakelock issue
This would suggest it's app related, though by not configuring my samsung account (I don't need to) that could affect the way the bloatware works too.
Quite happy now! Wish I could take a "snapshot" backup. Of course that would need a custom recovery and break the KNOX flag. Oh samsung. that's annoying.
The plan is to leave it like this until after work, then to add tweetings & spotify. I'm going to slowly add apps back so hopefully help in identifying when (if at all) the problem reduces. Of course there could be a latent affect which would just be painful.
Annoying too I wasn't able to find the cause with adb, better battery stats, dumpsys etc without doing it the basic way.

Awe I was reading your monologue breathlessly while hoping for a solution. I've been at work 8 hours, and I have 4h 43m of awake time. All of it minus 10 mins was due wlan_wake

Hi everyone, I just moved from iOS to android like a few months ago and was facing a pathetically bad battery life for my S4 i9505, googled alot and found out that rooting and disabling bloatware is the only effective option, I rooted my device with Odin. Disabled basic apps like S Health, Watch On and stuff but didnt noticed any effective change in my battery life, installed battery Juice defender, battery Guru and Cpu tuner, dont know which does the trick but it felt a bit relief. but the problem now am facing is after disabling a few more apps which i got a safe list on searching from XDA developer's forum. i noticed when I wokeup my time was still stuck at 12:36 and when i pushed the home button my screen began to flicker, it turned black and i turned my device back on manually :/ any idea where things went wrong as am panicking. you can email me on [email protected] as well
I hope android buddies are helping too
U must hav deleted some essentials
No I believe I didn't, I found a safe to remove list on XDA Developer, and I only removed apps which I never used but a few apps i don't know about but as they were mentioned are save to remove {Talkback, StoryAlbum Widget, S Health & Sensor Service, Samsung Hub Updater, Samsung Games, Learning, Watch On, Books, Translator, RoseEUkor, PickUpTutorial, PageBuddyNotiSer, OMACP, NFC Test, Mobile Print Services, LocalFOTA, InteractiveKeyguardTutorial, GroupPlay, Flipboard, ELM Agent, Chat ON}. I installed them after backing up thru Titanium Backup
U installed them after having backup means ? I didnt get u
I've been using my galaxy s8 (G950U) for about two weeks now. I feel like I've been ripped off. This thing gets warm just from streaming music via Pandora. Geekbench scores are better on both my Exynos s7 edge and my old note 5. Then there's the USB C audio lag. As soon as I plugged in usb c headphones, my s8 basically froze to the point of unusable. Anyone else having these problems or did I just happen to pick up a bad phone?
Havent noticed any of your issues.
I haven't tried USB-C headphones, but I am actually very satisfied with my phone apart from the battery. It's fast, responsive, handles everything I throw at it. Don't rely too much on benchmarks, it doesn't always represent the day to day use.

Haven't had it as long as you but i'm on day 4 and so far so good. Hopefully it stays that way.

I had an AT&T version and now an Exynos UK version. Both are incredibly responsive the latter more so. I spent hours yesterday with my phone connected to SideSync configuring it. Not a stutter or stall in anything I did. I can see how an S8 via Dex can emulate a PC. Your issues seem like a one-off. Most likely due to some combination of apps you have installed, something you've disabled or frozen, or a utility run amok (EG: Bixby re-mapper). Do you use SmartSwitch? Some apps don't like to be restored vs. installed fresh. As for USB-C I used it all day yesterday connected to a USB 3.0 port on my PC and regularly to connect my phone to Android Auto. The phone's performance never changed.
Here's how I configure my U.S. phones (it's not necessary on imports):
From a fresh restore from recovery I skip signing in to my Google and Samsung accounts.
I uninstall or disable all the carrier junk and any other apps I won't use.
I don't disable Samsung core apps because they're interdependent and can create problems and battery drain when they look for each other and they aren't there.
I sign in to my Samsung account and disable the syncs I don't use and then update all my pre-installed Samsung apps and download optional ones I use.
I sign in to my Google account and disable the syncs I don't use and quickly disable auto-update in the Play Store so I can control what's installed or updated.
Only after all my apps are in place do I start to play with the settings.
I backed up my AT&T S8+ to Samsung Cloud and only restored my apps, music, photos, documents, phone logs, and MMS history. Moving settings over is a crap shoot if something from the old phone incorrectly overlays something on the new phone. It's more time consuming to do it this way but (knock on wood) I've never had battery drain issues or any other funkiness with a new phone and I go through many. Good luck.
No problem
No problem here, really good performances overall.
Mine runs really well too. Very happy customer
Everything is ok here.. very fast
I have similar experience. My exynos S7E is way faster than this Snapdragon S8. Though I did get the UFS 2.0 version. Probably going to sell it and pick up another exynos.
Mine runs as slow as my galaxy s1...
I'm satisfied with mine. It's a beauty inside and outside ?

I only have the AT&T bloatware installed. I also transferred the same apps from my s7 edge to my s8, so I doubt it's any extra apps I installed. Could me having a UFS 2.0 have an effect?
Coming from a Google Pixel, I'd say animations and general smoothness/responsiveness are definitely not up there.
It's not slower, it's just jerkier. I wish Samsung gave the same attention to software polishing as it does with hardware.
it's the bixby button remapper apps
mine was fine, then i installed one of those. then the phone was so sluggish and jerky when scrolling
disabled the remapper, and it's buttery smooth again

it must be something you have installed.
do you have any other apps showing in settings>accessibility>services?
Mine is smooth and fast. I disabled the bixby apk's, but only so I didn't accidentally hit the bixby button, not because there was lag or anything. I turn off all animations/etc in developer settings on all my phones since the animations seem pointless. Fastest phone I have had to date, with the Note 7 right there with it. The s7E also very fast. Now going back to my Note 4 - BIG difference in speed, the Note 4 felt sluggish as any 3 year old phone would in comparison.
Very smooth. As fast as iPhone 7 I have.
Try Factory Reset
Phone is awesomely quick even on power saving mode.

I think this is your problem: some people reported issues when transferring programs and settings from one device to another using smart switch and claim all was well after resetting and installing everything fresh. I can't confirm it, since I didn't transfer anything from my old phone except phone book, but then I don't have any issues either.
As you can see by the title, my S8 has been running very slowly recently. This problem has come up recently. Cleaning the memory through the settings only seems to be a temporary fix, and I would rather not root because I don't want to trip Knox. Is there any good apps or methods I can use to really get a good cleaning on my phone and speed it up?
Uninstall apps you don't use, use the device maintenance app built into the phone, clear cache and dalvik in recovery. That's pretty much all I can say without knowing exactly what you mean when you say "my phone is running slowly"
