Battery Life Testing - Kernel + Rom Combo's

Iv always considered battery life a very important factor in my purchasing of a phone and was one of the big reasons i moved from my Desire HD to the Nexus S (amongst many others). However having been on the android scene for a while im used to tinkering with kernels and roms etc and due to the new battery graph in gingerbread im now able to make direct comparisons rom by rom and kernel by kernel to see how they all differ. This is all shown + explained below.
First id like to explain my method;
I install the rom and kernel with the same apps I always use and charge the phone fully until i am about to go to sleep. I then unplug the phone and leave it in the exactly the same place on my desk with exactly the same settings (sync intervals etc) and i kill all apps before i leave it just to make sure the test is fair.
In the morning i then take a screen shot of the battery life over the period of usually 8 hours and will upload this for you to see. I then look at the over-night battery drain as a comparison on how good battery life is on specific roms and kernels.
Justification - Many of you may be thinking who cares about standby battery life? I care about the battery when im using it!?
Well although that's valid there are many reasons i have taken this approach;
1. It is completely fair i.e. no individual differences such as 'im a heavy user' but we all have different definitions of a 'heavy user'. This is eliminated by the fact the phone is not used and thus the same every time (no individual differences)
2. If a phone has severe battery drain during sleep general knowledge should dictate that battery drain should increase when the screen is on, cpu is working and your syncing your facebook wall, thus a direct correlation with sleep battery drain and usage drain should be apparent.
Therefore i have decided over the next few days/weeks etc i will upload on a regular basis a screenshot of the battery drain over night, along with the battery use details and screen on time etc etc. In addition to the rom and kernel info and i hope that over time this proves to be a very useful thread.
I have been doing this over the last few days on a less strict system and there have been some VERY interesting results which i will upload over the next few days.
(Just a final note iv never really done anything like this on xda before so if its a stupid idea then please tell me now so i dont waste my time doing it, however if people are really interested please let me know and il make sure i do my best!!)

SCREENSHOT 1: This was using modacos custom rom r10 and the kernel that comes with it, i had quite a short sleep (about 6 hours) but the curve pretty much shows what the point im trying to make is. The battery life is great!!
SCREENSHOT 2: This is CM7 Nightly build 27# with Netarchy's latest 1.2.1 kernel and although i didnt use the screen once of charge for a few minutes as you can see once the screen was off battery life barely decreased and was over a long period of time.
If anyone wants me to test specific combos please let me know.

I'd be interested in seeing CM7, just whatever nightly build you manage to catch.

I don't think that result will give you precise result.
I found that statistic is wrong sometimes.
It is better to measure using "play video loop".
So, find a movie, set to the same brightness and play in loop?

Unfortunately that will not give you how well the rom does while it is idle.

I'm really looking forward to your results. My only issue with this phone is the battery life is terrible. I ordered an extended battery off Ebay 3 weeks ago and have yet to receive it. Never ordering anything from Hong Kong again!

What were you using before that you consider this phone to have bad battery life? By far this phone has the best battery life of any Android device I've owned. If you want bad battery life, get an Evo. That is horrific battery life.

I am looking forward to the rest of these, however just a quick question. What was your battery use like in that situation with the stock ROM? Just for reference, because I'm thinking I might switch to modaco soon. Thanks!

Iv got a few more screenies but it seems i may have to end this thread prematurely. Its the SNS or 2.3 but idle battery usage for me is pretty much identical no matter what the kernel or rom (il upload a CM7 + Netarchy 1.2.1 shot top op). This was unexpected on my behalf because with my DHD kernels and roms had a big impact on idle battery consumption. I have noticed however that without a full wipe when changing some kernels such as with M r10 idle battery life can increase drastically. I will continue for the next few days and if i dont see any big changes i may move method to a video loop or something of the sort.

Interesting find
I found out something today that may interest may of you. I was messing around with the sleep profiles on SetCpu with netarchys kernel and i found that its better to leave the range from 100-800 than 100-400 or less. This i believe is because when the phone is asleep and carries out a process it will be forced to clock to the maximum of 400mhz and then stay at that speed for 10 seconds, instead of say going up to 800mhz for 1-2 seconds to complete the same process. So a tip to you would be set your profile to 100-800mhz conservative and see what you get!

This kinda enforces the point that SetCPU is useless for the NS unless you really want to overclock...
Any battery saving tactics used buy lowering screen off profiles are counteracted by the system process;( So i think in the context of battery life you are probably better to not use SetCPU

I would definitely move to a video loop or some other 'heavy use' task because when you think about it, not too much can really be changed when almost no power is being used in the first place.
You could also just mention your general feeling for the battery life of each rom, because quite often that is what I go by as my usage varies depending on a range of things (school day or weekend etc) .

I would love to see the difference between modaco's default kernel vs netarchy's kernel.

On CM nightly 13, I just went 11 hours and I'm at 90%. That's 1/2% an hour. Not bad. That is with stock kernel.

Which ROM&Kernel Combination gave you the best battery life?
I have to improve my battery life and i can't find the right combination.

pretty much. every device behaves differently I found.
Whatever combination you try though make sure you give it 2-3 days before judging it.
For me I'm using speedmod kernel + CheckRom HD. It's a great balance between battery life and performance. I use the 2000 mAh samsung battery and never have to worry during the day about my battery. Just plug it in when I go to sleep.

I think Sensation ROM is the best. Cuz, very long battery life about 3-4 days in normal use(without open 3g or wifi). And, very stable for me

You're going to have to try various combinations out for yourself. Using the same combination as someone else on the basis of them saying "This rom/kernel combination gives me teh awesomz battery life !" will almost certainly lead to you being disappointed.
The reasons for that are:- No two phones come out of the factory the same (components do vary, mostly slightly, sometimes a lot), no two users will have the same usage patterns and no two users will have their phones setup the same.
Sooo....Get reading. Read the various threads about the various roms/kernels, take particular note of other people's experiences with same to give you a guide. And ask questions there if necessary.
Asking vague questions like this will ultimately waste your time.
Edit - Notice how so far you've only had answers from "newer" forum members ? There's a reason for that. Read my post again, the hint's in there

I have no battery complaints. Why???? Because I have 3 spare batteries. I advise anyone who has issues with battery life to do the same.

My phone lasts weeks if I don't touch it and leave it in airplane mode! Wooooo!
There's a new "what ROM/kernel thread" every couple of days and I always read them for some reason. I think I have a pathological need to get these things marked as read but I don't want to just click the "Mark This Forum Read" button.
Really, every ROM I've used gets me through at least one day of normal use, and my varying usage patterns have much, much more impact than ROM. My advice is one of two things: either use a ROM you're comfortable with and just don't mess with it too much, or develop ORD and flash ROMs every few days. Either way you're probably gonna be fine.

CheckROM v4 and SiyahKernel i get just over a day of constant use, and around 3 to 4 days of moderate use using standard battery and a few battery saving tips mentioned previously.

CM7 + siyah kernel
so far i've been using CM7 + siyah kernel and it can last me a day with moderate use...just use 2G instead of 3G if u r not using the internet..2G is more than enough for my background apps that needs data for push notification(ie facebook,mail,whatsapp etc...)

[HOWTO] Cleaning your ROM for better battery life ~ up to 5 days

You are expected to read the full description and use your brains to process this information, before even touching your phone. Assumed is that you know how to flash using CWM.
Whining that you disagree to remove bloat is not appreciated; If you want to keep your phone bloated for whatever reason, you are at the wrong thread. Feedback should be substantiated and reproducible, not a ventilation of your bottom.​
Context
The intention of this thread is to set an approach how to minimize the battery consumption when you are NOT using your device, e.g. when you are at work, sleeping, at some place that does not allow you to recharge, etc. This guide explains how to thoroughly remove stuff that you probably do not need, something that certainly will not affect your battery life in a negative way. The approach is based on the ROMCleaner script, which was extended a bit. Whether it is necessary to remove all the stuff as described, is debatable - nevertheless it is an approach that works for me, otherwise I would not be posting it.
Because a lot of people replied with phrases like "this is bullsh*t", let me state the following: This approach is in no way a guarantee that you will actually achieve battery life longer than 2 seconds after a full recharge. Neither is it a part of the bible, it is merely the approach I followed to prolong the battery life of my device - which I like to share with you. If you are still hating, wonder yourself: "What have I contributed lately?". In any case, at least try it out yourself before drawing your conclusion beforehand and polluting this thread.
The second discussion point is whether the battery should last longer than 1 day. According to many, you are not using your device properly if you would like this to be the case. My answer is simple: If you have no such desire, move along. If you do, like I do, this topic might be of some worth to you.
Furthermore, I honestly do not understand statements like '2-3-4-5 days is impossible' on one battery charge. If you are convinced that Jesus will return again, please do so, but give other people the space to actually find out whether it is the case for themselves.​
Some Introduction...
Have you been annoying your ass of because your battery is drained within a day, without even using the phone while at work? I certainly have. Coming from a SGS1, which used to serve me at least 3 days on one charge, I got instant diarrhea from the battery life of the stock SGS3 firmware.
Then I downloaded a ROM, stripped everything unneeded and more and finally got a battery life of approx 3 - 4 days. However, because I had ripped a ROM apart, which was a manual operation, updating became quite time-intensive. Therefore I also did not update, until the recent JB leaks. So this time I though: Lets make a script to do it for me, in order to make updates possible in an easy way. Then I only have to run the clean-script after an update.
After some testing, I am finally satisfied with my device again - Check out the screenshots. The results are achieved while having wifi constantly on, using google sync and whatsapp. The screenshots are based on Wanamlite XXDLI7; The first shows the battery usage during a night, the second during a day of light phone usage. I will post another screenshot when the battery is drained completely.​
What to expect and trade-offs
After completing this procedure you can expect significant increase of battery life when the phone is idle. If you are using the phone actively all day long, then this approach might not be of much worth to you. People who do not have time to play with the phone all day, e.g. because they work during the day, will probably find this most useful. The cleaning of your rom will remove about 70% of the apps/widgets that come by default, therefore it is wise to check whether you will not lose apps/widgets that are valuable to you. You are still free to modify the "script" according to your need/desire.​
So what do we need?
A DEODEXED Stock-based ROM, I prefer wanamlite http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705866
ROMCleaner - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827817
The attached ROMCleaner_user.txt will sustain default samsung browser, calendar, email and messaging. (untested)
The attached ROMCleaner_user_jb-apps.txt expects you to replace the JellyBean apps discussed next. Beware that the stock browser, calendar and email are not tested by me and could drain your battery faster.
Because I had some issues that ROMCleaner would not read the ROMCleaner_user.txt, I had to integrate the file into the ROMCleaner package. To do this, you can download the ROMCleaner package and replace META-INF\com\google\android\romcleaner\ROMCleaner.txt in the zip by the file you just downloaded.
Packages to restore some stuff ^^
If you have chosen for the JellyBean apps package (jbapps-avdaga.zip) you will get:
JellyBean browser + calendar ripped from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797109
Inverted JellyBean apps: email and messaging ripped from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780559
In case you want Samsung Apps store for free fancy games, get it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1861409
Got the packages, whats next?
Put all files on your phone, reboot to CWM.
Make a backup of your current system, smart monkey.
Flash the JellyBean ROM of your prefrence if you have not already. (If you come from ICS, wiping your data guarantees best results).
"Flash" the ROMCleaner script, either by using ROMCleaner_user.txt approach, or integrating the file.
If necessary, flash the provided JellyBeans apps package and Samsung Apps package.
Reboot and enjoy your awesome battery.

I've been on Stock-rooted since I got the device. I'm definitely going to try this out.
I use my phone plenty, doubt I'd be able to get 5 days out of it, but we'll see.

Cannot promise that, but you can compare the list of removed apps in ROMCleaner.txt

Will it work with a LH1 (BTU)- stock rom? (Rooted, of course)

It should, make a backup and try for yourself. Do take into consideration that you might need the default ICS apps or simply use the ROMCleaner_user.txt, not the JB one.

The first image is supposed to show how it performs when idle, the second is after a day of usage. Primarily used it for some messaging and calls though, however the main point is that the battery is not drained when not using the phone. When I used a stock rom the battery was depleted for 50% after half a day without me even touching the device :-\
Of course if you use the phone normally the battery will be depleted in 3-4 days, like i mentioned in the intro.

I know how to get years of battery life, charge your phone to 100%, take the battery out for at least 2 years, and it should have some life left in it, you must make sure you don't put the battery in for at least 2 years.

What are you guys whining about..if it can improve your battery life and remove the apps that you dont need, why not? You should be thankfull that people put their work in such things in their free time.

Nearly all of your battery life improvements are just doing step #1.
You're using a rooted and tweaked stock ROM with a tweaked kernel. Just by doing this, you're going to get much better battery life versus stock ROM. Nothing new to see here. Removing what little other "bloat" that Wanam left in the ROM by removing a bunch of apk's (that don't run anyway unless you launch them) and replacing a few ICS apps with JB versions will only offer a very small improvement.

Please install any stock-based ROM and check the services that are running in the background - without you even know you had them. There is a lot of garbage coming in all stock-based roms, and I really do not understand the problem of removing stuff you do not use; Morever, I think this is something people should do in all apsects of life; that is removing sh*t you do not use.
I conclude your assertions are based on thin air, as you did not even take the time to test this approach. I have spent quite some time testing stuff out and posting my observations here - so please do not post if you have nothing constructive or reproducible to say.
Last thing: I do not replace ICS apps with JB, this stuff was tested on a JB rom - but you knew already because you read the full post

Besides changing some samsung apps for CM10 ones, that is it indeed. Though the debloating is more thorough than proposed by others.

Ok, thanks,, just wanted to know exactly what the script did, prefer my own debloating and tweaking, but good for newcomers.

@OP: Your post is missleading. Removed bloatware has nothing to do with the battery life.
After intensive research I came to the conclusion that there are only 2 major issues for the battery drain on vanilla stock ROM (JB DLI8).
Those are:
1) Samsung push service : SOLUTION -> simply unstall it, bacause you don't need it anyway (e.g. via Titanium backup).
2) Wrong fast dormancy setting : SOLUTION -> use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gokhanmoral.fastdormancytoggle.i9300&hl=sl from gokhanmoral to toggle it to the setting supported by your carier. BE careful not to toggly it exactly the oposite.

It should work on any stock-based rom, also omega.

My thoughts...really.
I don't wanna sound rude, yet i had to agree with some when they say "buy a Nokia (old one of course" or just "disconnet for one or two years".
It's virtually impossible with the kind of gadgets we have these days any battery last more than 1 day.
I've made my own mods and roms from scratch in recent past for X10, so u may consider at least that i known what i'm talking about.
The only way, no mather witch brand you like or believe its the best, is by f#@king your screen. Period. That is the main reason why every phone just last 1 day with "normal" use.
If you've payed attention i've used "normal" expression witch means phone, mail, sync and didn't wrote "heavy use" that will include music, YouTube, videos, etc.
Like i said. I've made my own work in the past and still do some minor (?) changes and i must say this: i'm glad if my phone last one working day from 7AM till 23PM. Yes! Working day, that's why i dont't develop anything.
If you or anyone else state that your/his phone had better battery life than this i make two considerations:
1. You're (not you in particular) a liar, or;
2. You simply don't use your phone as you can.
If you dont consider that you belong at the first consideration than..."buy a Nokia..."
Another thought:
You just bought this (or similar) phone for a status matter or money it's something that's really cheap for you (another 2nd choice).
Like i said...just my 2 cents.

[Q] ROM with the best battery life?

Exactly what the title says. I've been looking here and there for some ROMs that I would like to flash and I found quite a number of them to try out. However I want to hear from the experts who have been flashing custom ROMs all the time. What would you say would be the best ROM on battery life? I am currently running Hyperdrive RLS21 and I'll say it does decent on the battery life albeit the standby time can improve (I lose around 10% in a night if I leave it 100% uncharged).

First off battery life is subjective and usually has very little to do with the ROM. It is the kernel and settings which usually have most affect on battery life amongst the same user. This is not something you can compare from user to user but must be compared by the same user under the same conditions.
Let me give you some examples..a heavy gamer will get vastly different battery life from a heavy phone/text user. A person in low signal areas that has many apps synching will get horrible battery life compared to someone who has very little apps or great signal. I think you get the idea.
Kernel settings such as governor/scheduler/OC/UC choices will vastly affect your battery life. You really either need to compare ROMs yourself, or find someone that has compared ROMs under the same situation and similar use as you to get any useful data. I see that you asked for opinions from those flashing many ROMs. Other factors can affect that too...were they all clean flashed? Were any adjustments made?

Problem is that I'm on a locked bootloader (ATT variant) so it's only natural that I should ask for a ROM that could give the best battery life since I can't flash any kernels

I'm no expert but I've been flashing ROMs for my S2, now my s4 for last 3 years. I've found recently that Tesla has the best battery life, 4% drain over 8 hrs at night. Best ever

It's not a good thing to ask for best ROM for xxxx reason. Everyone has different usage patterns and different needs, so that different ROM will suit them or you better.
You can instead, open the main ROM threads (both in Android and Original Android Development for S7 Edge) and see what the latest posts are complaining and what they are talking about what's good and what's bad about the ROM. Usually some users even post screenshots of their battery usage screen.
Another option is to go to a "How's Battery Life" or something like that thread and check what usage is similar to yours and what ROM the person reporting the battery life used.

Hello Lord. I ever test plenty rom. Batman, ambasadii, superman, project alice, superstock.
So, I finish to be loose in all of them. That's why i asking. Because for me battery life is important. And other things, we find some problems with Snapchat in some of theme.
So in fact i'm looking for the best rom for me.
