Firmware update? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I bought Moto G5 Plus retail India version on 1st of June and since then I have not received any firmware update at all. The current security patch on my phone is for the month of March. I want to know does this phone ever receive any firmware update?

Don't expect updates from Lenovo. Return the device if you are looking for security updates

I was certainly not expecting this when I thought of buying a Moto branded phone. I really hoped of receiving regular and faster updates for a Moto phone. My Intel based Asus Zenfone 2 was better than this. I used to receive updates almost every month for the first 18 months. I hope Lenovo don't destroy Moto brand. Anyways, thanks for the reply.

Well, as Donald Trump would say, SAD.

Even redmi note 4 has got more updates than this phone

Just flash LOS. It's pretty close to stock FW, plus you are always on the latest security updates

I'm not jumping into a rage just yet. I have a feeling that they may do some of the carriers. Their new business model logically dictates that they should do their unlocked carrier free versions first. That's just good business on their part. I sure as hell do not trust Lenovo though. I guess I'll stay tuned.

Well Lenovo's "fine print" did say "1" upgrade...which we got from 5.0.2 to 5.1...I'm assuming a third gen is coming that's keeping in line with their new hardware design (G and X). But I'm not overly concerned most devices at this price point never see any official support of any kind after release.
Sent from my XT1526 using Tapatalk
The Indian variant didn't even get the 5.1 update
I'd be pretty annoyed if I bought the E 2nd gen when it first came out for the unlocked retail price of $150.

There is no reason what-so-ever to not give the retail (non-carier) models the update to 6.
If Moto were to give some carriers to update, they should/could have listed it.
That's based on the Moto X 2014; they listed the retail units but not the carrier versions.
I just got the Update to 5.02 not to 5.1

Working on it for moto G 2015 but will be easy to make it work for Moto E 2015. Already have a bootish version for Osprey
Already !? COOOOLLL...

yeah sign that petition guys.
I never got 5.1 on my Telus Moto-E which is pretty lame.
I have been preparing to update to it but i am scared to flash my phone LOL
I plan on using a custom kernel (Squid's) with the stock 5.1 rom (rooted)
So it would have been nice if Telus here in Canada gave us the update..
Would make things less risky for me.

Looks like Motorola DID write the updates, but it's AT&T and VZW holding them back

The updates went to the WiFi Alliance for certification. Maybe AT&T and VZW will stop dragging their feet and let us have it.
Why would they do that ughh makes me so angry

So they can sell you a new phone of course same reason batteries are no longer user replaceable. Carrier greed.
I'm guessing this is still part of the story. Pure speculation, but perhaps Moto offered the stock updates, the carriers said OK, now go add all this bloat and test that everything still works, and Moto said we don't have the resources to test your bloat... I have no idea, but I'm guessing there is more to it that just what we know.
I think Motorola hands the software over to the carriers and they add and test it. I'm thinking that there is something to an agreement to sell a particular phone that guarantees a certain number of updates or something like that and that agreement is up for the 2014 Moto X with the carriers.
So in that case Motorola can make the update but the carriers aren't obligated to release it.
Sent from my XT1095 using XDA Free mobile app
If this is the case, why hasn't the Pure Edition/XT1095 gotten the update? It seems odd to me that they would willingly hold up an update for the XT1095 so that they could release it at the same time as the carrier versions of the phone... My guess (just a guess) is that they might still be working on stability with some of the Moto features when run on Marshmallow.
What we don't know is if Motorola is testing an update now. The testing for 5.1 took months, with multiple builds pushed out the test group from what I understand.

Maybe it's just me (I very well could be hallucinating) but I've always noticed that before I get an update my battery life gets a tad wonky. It's gotten to the point where if I go a few days where my battery dies more quickly than usual I'm like "Wait, are they going to push an update, soon?"
Again, I could be hallucinating. :silly:
This changes everything and makes it a totally avoidable PR disaster. Everyone was ready to lynch Motorola for not updating the carrier versions. The fact that Moto didn't speak out about the carriers blocking it is fascinating and I can't figure out why they'd do it., since they don't really need carriers anymore as they sell everything unlocked, unless maybe they still put them in retail locations or if they have enterprise deals for backend systems. Either way if this is true, Motorola is jumping on a grenade to save someone else.
We'll see how the rest of the life cycle of these phones goes, but maybe I can buy another Moto after all. If they keep punctual updates coming, maybe a black friday 2016 X is in my future.
People should stop bashing phone manufactures when it's usually the carriers fault for the lack of updates. This is very typical in the US where AT&T and VZW are the biggest blame since they control the major herds.
Phone manufactures provide the updates, but it's up to carriers (and their carrier branded phones) to decide if they want an older phone to receive an update or just fool mindless sheep and let them them buy a new phone if they want the latest and greatest. Simple as that.
Also.... Welcome to the consumer era! Where anything is old the next day! Why spend precious time on old hardware when they can sell you a new fancy phone for the same price or twice as much?! You know you can't say no to that if you're technologically impaired!
So for sure the Verizon Moto X 2014 XT1096 will not get an update to allow for simultaneous voice and data? I really only care about VoLTE. Is that never coming to the Verizon Moto X 2014?

The phone has such a nice form factor, nicer than the Moto X PE. It's a shame it has been EOL'ed w/o VoLTE. Sigh. I wonder if it was Verizon or Lenovo who cut off the Moto X 14 from VoLTE update?

It was verizon. All the Moto X 2014 models will get one last update to 6.0, except for the verizon and at&t models which will stay on 5.1 which it has now.

I have a MM ROM on my tablet and I really don't see what the fuss is about. The Moto X 2014 is still a great phone. MM doesn't bring anything really new to the table. I'd much rather have root than an OTA.
For me I was hoping that the MM update would finally fix the bluetooth/wifi issues that have plagued this phone since I got it.
Well, now I'm sure that we won't get the 6.0 update.
Motorola has updated the list of devices to receive Marshmallow on its site and we are not there, again.

The article says that 4 new models are "ADDED". The Moto x 2014 Pure (aka XT1095) was in the original list given by them.

US Unlock Vs ATT version

Hi All,
Does anyone get change to check new US unlock version available from last week, I am thinking to get that, how good it is like
- Can I get it rooted?
- How it is different from ATT version from H/W specs prospective
Thanks
Prashant

I just got the US unlocked version today: same exact hardware. Just no carrier apps or bloat. I have no intention of rooting as it will break Samsung and Android pay which I use.
Thanks..
I can report voLTE and wifi-calling work with the unlocked version on T-Mobile. Like the previous poster stated, there is no bloat or carrier apps. Tethering works out of the box.

Do you notice any improvement in multitasking or overall system speed? I'm trying to determine how much of a difference bloat is making in my overall experience.
I don't have a carrier version to compare it to but so far the phone is pretty snappy. I haven't had any issues with ram management or slow downs.

Interesting my new unlocked US version is still on May security updates while all carrier versions are on July update. Not a good sign if Samsung is prioritizing carrier versions and ignoring the unlocked version.
Same here May security date. With the phone just launching I'm guessing they will go straight to the July update, bringing it up to the carrier versions.

Yes, and that is what I am worrying about. Remember the Samsung Galaxy S4 Dev Edition? There was not ONE single update.
I hope this phone doesn't fall into the same camp. I have a 30 day return period w/ BH Photo so if there are no updates by Aug 1, it will be returned. I already initiated the RMA process to be on the safe side and have my form should I need it.

Nice good strategy, my 14 day return window in best buy will be the coming weekend. I think I'll just keep and see how it goes. If they aren't updating I'm going to sell this when next Nexus comes anyway and probably will not bother with unbranded versions of Samsung phones.

Anyone know if there is VoLTE on at&t with the unlocked version? This is a deal breaker for me. Not really worried about video or wifi calling.

upgrade (N?) for Moto 4G Plus

Call me itchy (?) But Just got my G4Plus, with android 6.0.1
I am going to need to root (ugh), because of the grandfathered (AT&T) tethering provision.
SO: does anyone have any ideas when the new 7.0/(formerly called N) will be out (and available on the our motoG4 Plus?)
thanks in advance.

Gee, and I thought that Google was announcing n/7.0 sometime this month. I guess november-January would be a more reasonable timeframe.
guess I gotta go root this 6.01 now...
Thanks
N will release by months end "rumor" or sept-oct as usual. I know the lg v20 will be the first device with N at launch in sept. Id say we will get it by xmas.
Yeah it will be at least December if history is any sign

I wonder how long now till us Moto G4 owners get the update... I'm not expecting too long though. Will the Moto G4 Prime Exclusive Edition (which I have) even receive this update? I guess only time will tell.

I think you answered your own question. I would expect after the first of the year but it could be sooner. I would think the Amazon edition will get it but it may roll out at a different time than other phones. Companies like them and Consumer Cellular that distribute their own version have some say so as to when updates are released since they also provide some software tech support. (Though not much if you've ever called them)
