[Q] Possible to crop curved portion of screen output? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

In cases where screens have become damaged or unresponsive, there are several ways to crop out the non-working portion as indicated here: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/57267/resize-screen-for-dead-touch-zone
My question is, as someone who wants S8 specs and features but finds looking at the curved edges deeply unpleasant, is there a similar way to crop the S8 screen to just the flat portion of glass?

A hackish way to accomplish this would be to use Tasker to display a black overlay-blocking scene over each edge... and maybe adjust dpi a little.

Interesting, I didn't know Tasker could do something like that. Could it be used with a partially-transparent overlay to alter the color balance in a specific area of the screen? I have a Shield K1 with a purple-shifted area on the screen that could potentially fix, if Tasker can do that.

Yeah, covering the edges would be simple.
You'd have to really tweak the colors in order to fix a section of screen....even then I'm not sure it wouldn't interfere with touch input in that area. Interesting idea.

Easy. Two pieces of black electrical tape should do the job nicely.

Request: Someone with a White Note Please post a pix of it

if any of you have a digital camera and white galaxy note, can you please post a picture of plain white display (via LCD Test *#0*#) in low brightness. Please let me know. thank you all in advance.
Here you go. Hopefully the file attaches (I think it may be too large).
Oh, it looks like it may have downsized it. Let me know if you need more detail.
Is that dirt or a dead pixels on that image?

Must have been specs of dust. I checked just now and they're not there.

Thanks a lot! Do you have a screen protector applied on top of that? I see something that looks like mura lines. I'm sure those are not mura lines but the way the camera was focused on the screen. Also that display brightness was set to the lowest, right?
It would be great to see more users contribute to this thread. I'm making a tally to convince myself to buy a White note. My black note was serviced several times due to screen issues, and am getting a refund. Not letting go of the note just yet.

don't know if my eyes are playing me, I do see a couple of horizontal lines, I don't know if that is due to the screen protector or the angle the picture was taken from, don't wanna scare you, but I am hoping that the next wave of batches have a better production like the S2.
The witch hunt continues

Always Positive...
However, you can definitely appreciate the fact that the White Note has a better display than the Black. Horizontal lines or not, they definitely display less on the White compared to the Black. Hope to see more pictures soon!

No screen protector. And yes, I set the brightness all the way down before I took that photo.
I think if you're seeing a moire pattern it may be because of the difference in resolution between the reduced-resolution image and your monitor. I'm looking at the original photo in Photoshop and when I zoom in and out I see changing moire patterns at certain zoom levels, but don't notice anything when I look at it zoomed in at 100%, or even at 50%. And of course I don't see any moire pattern when looking at the phone itself.
Oh, and the brighter area in the lower left of the photo is my hand's reflection.
I do, however, see faint horizontal (vertical in this photo) banding on the screen when looking at the phone. I couldn't say whether it's any better or worse than the black/carbon blue version, as I've never seen one. I'd describe the banding as very faint, but visible if you're looking hard for it. And when looking at a blank white screen like this, I also have a general sense that not every part of the screen is quite the same level of brightness. Again, not major, but noticeable when looking at a solid white screen.
You'd need to reduce the brightness further with Screen Adjuster from the market. The basic brightness setting at 0% is probably only at 50% of what the screen is actually at. So you can go much dimmer to reveal the manufacturing process.
Learn to live with it. The marks don't affect the functionality of the screen. While I have noticeable marks on the bottom right half of the corner and vertical streaks, I don't let it deter me from enjoying this elegant piece of tech!

That is bollocks My new white 32 GB Note has a much worse display than my former two blue 16 GB. Think I gonna send it back so that the white has a better display is pure dreams
I just ordered my white note today. Looking forward to it arriving on my doorstep tomorrow!
guys make sure to turnoff AUTO ADJUST SCREEN POWER in display options.
i have black unit and i done lcd test on low brightness.no lines or anything.
if you have to download app to lower brightness even more to see defect.then something is wrong with u.because ur looking for reasons to find some kind of defect.everything is not perfect.if u cant see it on normal use, then its good piece.

[Q] Is it normal to have subtle lines on the screen when viewing at angles?

It doesn't really bother me because I think it's just the way the screen is but if someone else could confirm that would be great.
When you hold your Nexus 7 in portrait mode and angle it so you're looking down or up on it even the slightest bit, you can see subtle horizontal lines. These lines are only invisible if you're looking at it dead/straight on.
Normal? Looks almost like scanlines. If other people have this I'm just going to assume this is the way the screen is manufactured.
That is probably the digitizer for touch sensing

I don't know about that. It actually looks like the edges of specific pixels. I think I've seen the digitizer lines you're referring to, I've seen lines cut into the glass criss-crossing but you only see them when you shine a light on the screen and the line are in the glass. This is not the case here, these lines are on the pixels of the screen and they're visible without shining a light on the screen.
Can you take a picture? As far as I know digitizer looks like very small dot not line.

I don't have a camera that can capture this I think. It's visible with an eye but a camera will just muddle the details of the pixels.
It's really unmistakeable with the eyes. Look at an app icon with the screen dead in front of you in portrait, then tilt the device either a little down or a little up and the app icon will have something that looks like lines running through it. The whole screen should have lines running through it horizontally. Nobody else has that?
EDIT: I think this is why.

Look at the pixel arrangement, those black gaps are what I think I'm seeing. Of course they look huge and black on a microscopic level but with my eye on a macroscopic level they look like subtle lines that are only visible in certain angles. So if this is true, everyone should be seeing these lines when they tilt the screens up and down? Either that or my screen is jacked up.

I see the same lines at particular angles. Is this normal or not?

[Q] Visible Digitizer

Has anyone else been able to see the digitizer grid when the screen is on. I have seen threads about seeing the grid with the screen off and in the right light but I have been able to see a grid of small pixel sized dots on the screen about 1/4" apart in a grid pattern all over the screen. It is much more noticeable on a white screen and the visibility changes depending on the angle of the tablet. I know I've heard about similar issues on other devices but not much can be found about it for the Nexus 7. The odd thing about it is that I didn't notice it on my initial inspection of the unit. I don;t know if it was always there or it developed over the week that I have had it. I'm just trying to find out if this is an isolated incident that warrants a return/exchange or if this is relatively normal. Any input is appreciated.

Mine is like this, but I REALLY have to look hard for it. It doesn't need to be returned, it works just fine. Just cosmetic.
Don't be so picky!

Its more or less normal. The bigger the screen the more noticeable it can be. It doesn't interfere with the use at all so I wouldn't worry

Weird, I had never even noticed that before, and I've had my tablet since July.

Transparent amoled and a 3d ui? Future of glass

How can you glass evolving in the future if it becomes a success?
I think the current implementation with the screen in corner will eventually be changed to dual transparent amoled screens on the lenses. This will make it possible to have a 3d ui as each eye will see a different screen.
How about controlling it? Maybe it will work like Xbox's Kinect allowing you to interact with it using your hands?
Or do you think using the whole lense as a screen would be too distracting and dangerous and never be implemented?
How can you see glass evolving?
I think the screen is going to be used solely as a feedback device do you know it's doing what you want. The majority of or interaction will be or voice giving commands and the verbal response from glass answering our questions / reading back or commands. I think there's too much distraction for a normal user if it's overlaying across our entire field of view

Screen off center for anyone?

It looks like the screen on my new G6 is slightly off to the left. There appears to be a smaller gap to the frame on that side. Anyone else seeing this on theirs? My Pixel XL screen runs all the way to the edges so I have no other reference.
Agreed, i can see it too, specially on the top. Mine doesnt look like that
Get a micrometer and measure it.

Is it possible that the case or the tempered glass protector is creating an illusion?

My OCD would be in overdrive if my phone was like that. I'd exchange it.
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
I completely understand, but it's my OCD that's also making me think twice about going for the exchange. I'm sure you are all too aware of the time it takes to get the phone set up just right: apps, sounds, accounts, launcher, behaviors, and all the other crap. I checked images from G6 reviews online and a few seem to match mine. Well hell, I'll wait and see if anyone else sees it on theirs. My eye keeps going to the edges now. Thanks for the feedback. It's nice to know I'm nuts but not alone.
Are you sure it's not your care causing it to appear that way?
LG backup is pretty good. Save to SD and restore to new phone

No, the screen doesn't reach all the way to the bezel and the case is even further out.
