Restoring to stock ROM soft bricked my phone - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hello forums,
I'm a novice in the field of tinkering with Android firmwares for phones. Just today I bought a perfectly fine, working second-hand S7 Edge, but I found out the owner had flashed a custom ROM to it, which prevented several features from working and made some annoying notification pop-ups. I wanted to revert to stock staying away from things like Odin, and I found out I can flash firmware using Smart Switch by Samsung. Apparently, when I completed the update, the phone would refuse to boot up.
This is the firmware Smart Switch has installed on my phone:

(I actually live in the Baltic countries, Lithuania to be more exact. I think SEB firmware is the one I need.)
This is the only screen my phone can make right now:
I've found that the only way to fix my phone now is through an Odin flash, but the firmwares take hours to download, and I'm not spending $16.5 to SamMobile for a one-time download. Plus, I don't know what those different BL, AP, CP or CSC buttons mean, or why I have to specifically flash the firmware with my HOME_CSC, which I don't know where to get from.
I just want to get my darn phone fixed on any firmware and I'm willing to hear any feedback from you.

The 5 files are
BL = bootloader
AP = kernal
CP= modem
csc = home csc if you want to keep the data currently on your phone. Generally you would use the first 4 files unless you are starting from scrate then substitue csc for home csc.
csc = use other csc, you will delete everything on your phone and will be reset like came out of the box.
these files are stored in a zip format in the download.
Download the file and unzip it for the 5 files which you would then upload to odin.
Ity sounds like you have a poor internet connection. If the file does not get download properly, it could get corrupted and be useless.
Flashing with odin on older computer could take up 30 minutes.

No, I have a good computer, but all of those cancerous websites don't allow faster download speeds than 150 KB/s if I'm choosing their free version.

OK, this phone is completely F-ed. I don't know what to do at this point, because when it says "Installing system updates", it stops at 32% and then says "Erasing", and follows up with the infamous "No command" screen. Says dm-verity error... failed code: 0x02.
I'm pretty sure I'm installing quite valid firmware. Do I must install the correct CSC file, otherwise it won't work?

These xda developer forums aren't quite helpful, are they? I only get info I can find everywhere, and not the info I need.

You might wanna read this thread. Read it all first before trying anything... I think the answer is in there..
good luck

You can't spell, plus, that tool is deprecated. I used updato.com later on, which lets me download at proper 10 MB/s speeds.
Why does this forum always imply that the original poster is a goddamn dumbass? What sort of people join this forum, seriously?

You told me that I used the wrong firmware, that's incorrect. You're helping me in the wrong way.
I can't change my CSC anymore. It's stuck on multi-CSC in BTU, no matter how many times I try. I tried taking my phone to a repair shop, they weren't able to do it and said that my IMEI is gone. But why does that prevent the phone from booting? My proper CSC is supposed to be SEB, and I know that. I just need to find out how to flash the firmware so that the phone can boot. Maybe EFS Clear and NAND Erase All?

This guide is telling me to install apk files and root my device??? My phone doesn't boot, how am I supposed to follow the steps? Also, the video is completely useless and pathetic. Why can't they make normal downloads instead of ad click sites and not fill the description with arabic text?
The guide telling how to fix dm-verity errors is showing just to install stock firmware. I have done that a million times, it does not work anymore. Do I have to do the Factory Mode thing first?

Well, I had my phone fix by an acquaintance of mine, he explained to me that he loaded completely official Samsung firmware he got by contacting Samsung directly, but I didn't ask specifically how he did it. Anyway, the phone is still KNOX tripped, but it works. Problem solved just by taking it for professional repair.

[Q] SGH-I337M No Sound Or Wifi

**EDIT**
This issue was solved for myself and another member here by tracking down the appropriate latest stock firmware for our regions and flashing it with Odin. Note that it took multiple flashes of the same firmware in Odin before it was actually fixed.
**Original Post**
Hi All,
I have a SGH-I337M from Rogers (Canada) and I'm having a hell of a time getting my phone working again. Here's the complete history. I originally took it from stock 4.2.2 to 4.4 Gummy ROM. Everything was working fine with that. I then found out about the easy sim unlock with the stock touchwiz ROM, so I plugged it into Kies to restore it to factory. However, I didn't realize (about a week ago) that they were rolling out the 4.3 update, so lo and behold I wound up with 4.3.
The unlock method was not working on this, so I got hold of the 4.2.2 official ROM and flashed it with Odin. It was at this time that I realized the 4.3 update included the knox bootloader (I think that's the bootloader? I'm still pretty green with this stuff), so of course I wind up with persisting flags showing warranty void, kernel is not seapermissive or whatever the error is, etc etc. ALSO, it was at the time of the 4.3 update that I realized wifi and sound do not work anymore. I flashed back to the Gummy rom, wifi starts working again but not sound.
PHEW, if you made it through that, thanks for your time! Anyway I'm now back at 4.2.2 because I figured I'd try the unlocking at least and... it doesn't work. I read from others that the wifi and sound not working had to do with the modem firmware not matching what the kernel expects, so I took my wifes phone (which is still running 4.2.2 and the unlock worked, also a SGH-I337M), ran the following:
Code:
su
cd mnt/sdcard/
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 of=backup-NON-HLOS.bin
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=backup-modem.bin
Copied those dumps, wrote them to my busted phone with:
Code:
su
dd if=NON-HLOS.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
dd if=modem.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2
reboot
And.... all that to no avail. I'm literally just fumbling through this now because this stuff is going beyond the scope of what I know. Anyone who can help or point me in the right direction would be most appreciated! Thanks for your time!
Fixed
Alright so, as I mentioned the official rogers 4.3 update over Kies is what I believe caused these problems in the first place. What I did however was get hold of the latest official build from this link (RWC-I337MVLUEMK6-20131125124040) and flash it in Odin. Oddly enough after the flash, all is working. Perhaps there is a broken version being pushed out over Kies.

Buddy! You're having the exact same problems I had. Can you tell me what carrier you are with and post your exact model here (like mine is SGH-i337M). The solution for me was to end up flashing (for the 4th or 5th time) the original stock touchwiz from branded by my carrier. The kernel warnings and such all went away, all sound and wifi works again (see my above posts). You might also be able to just flash the modem file for your phone, the CM version. Anyway post that stuff (exact model, carrier etc) and I'll see if I can help!

Here ya go buddy, found it on terafile. Click this link here. ProTip! Use Bitcomet to do the HTTP download (copy the link once it starts downloading) and set the max connections to 20. This way you'll bypass the download throttle and download at full speed. Follow up and let me know if it works out for you!
In case you don't know, extract the zip, open Odin, click "PDA" and select the .md5 file you extracted. Put your phone into download mode by powering off and then powering on while holding the volume down rocker. It'll ask you to press volume up to confirm. Plug the phone in now and Odin will recognize the phone is ready for flashing (will say added! in the text field). Go ahead and click start. Note that this is a very big file so after you select it in Odin it will freeze for a while while it calculates the MD5 sum.

You can't flash it through recovery you have to use Odin and yes 3.09 should work fine. Make sure you extract the zip first and select the .md5 file that gets extracted from the zip. ALSO note that this will replace your custom recovery. I have not yet attempted to replace the stock recovery after flashing and fixing my phone, so I cannot tell you if it will work or not. At this point I'm just happy to have my phone working again so I'm not tampering and leaving it at stock. Also note that once you flash 4.3 the boot loader will be replaced so that if you tamper with the phone (flash anything new etc) it will permanently set a flag that you cannot change which indicates that your warranty is now void.

What happen Furinax, i´m very happy, after flashing my phone for second time, it fix all, my phone is back, i have WiFi, sound, and calls again, i learn the lesson, i will never flashing again with Customs RoM´s and i recommend to everyone don´t do it, thanks for helping me, have a great Christmas and a very vary happy new year, my best regards, salutes from Guadalajara, México, take care you, and god bless you.:good:[/QUOTE]
Yay! Glad to hear it. Just gotta watch and read lots before flashing custom roms. Some phones are a pain in the rear, some are fine. Usually stick to flagship phones for this. For example the Nexus series from Google, never had an issue flashing any of those phones. Anyway buddy I'm glad to hear it's all working, merry Christmas and happy new year to you too and God bless you as well. Take care!
I am going through this right now as we speak. I bought a S4 I337M tonight locked to Telus and am trying to unlock it for bell.....it was on 4.3 so yeah I tripped the knox bootloader which is ok because I do not have warranty on the phone BUT I installed 4.2.2 and tried the unlocking and of course it does not seem possible on the Telus i337m .....I followed all suggestions to a T so we must have to pay for codes....
Anyways I lost wifi and sound so i used odin to push back telus factory firmware mk6 and still have no wifi and sound ? Any ideas?
I am currently using odin and pushing it once again , fingers crossed
Any tips on both the unlocking and regaining sound and wifi ? thanks

Hey. So a couple of things. First, if you did the unlock process with the 4.2.2 rom, you unfortunately have to re flash the 4.2.2 rom and this time in the menu turn sim lock back on. Then, you can proceed to flash 4.3.3 and buy an unlock code. The reason you have to re flash and explicitly re - enable sim lock using the 4.2.2 menu is that once it fails, if you don't do that then even your purchased unlock code won't work!
So make sure you do that. I believe it's #*0101 then hit menu key, select back. Hit menu again, select number input, enter 1. Get the ddms main menu or whatever it's called where you can see network lock options and then select on instead of off. There is actually a video on YouTube of this exact issue and fix, I've just been moving for 4 days and am beat so if you get really stuck here I can find it tomorrow.
Once you do that re flash 4.3.3 with Odin but before you do, enter recover mode and wipe/factory reset/cache everything and of course ensure you are backed up first.
It has been my experience and others experience that you may need to re flash 4.3.3 multiple times before the wifi and other issues will be fixed. Don't panic, it'll work. Once you've got that all sorted, I bought my unlock codes (did this painful process on three sgh-1337m's) from cellunlocker.net and all went perfect. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Thanks! took 3 times to get back wifi and sound.....so odd.
I am now flashing 4.2 again and i will change the settings you mentioned back to locked than clear cache/factory wipe before going back to 4.3 and ordering my unlock code online....I dont understand why it works for some and not [email protected]!!!

Glad you got sound/wifi back! As far as why it sometimes works, phone had to be shipped with 4.2.2. Once they get upgraded to 4.3, the functionality is gone for reasons I'm not 100% on so I won't shoot my mouth off like I'm an expert. Lol enjoy your unlocked phone once you get it all sorted!
After the second flashing works, be patient

- U cant come back of 4.3 to 4.2.2. And u cant restore ur DATA/boot of 4.2.2 to one new firmware 4.3 either
- U will have to install now TWRP for ex.
- Go to Recovery and wipe all (data, system, cache and dalvik cache)
- Reboot in Download Mode
- Flash this firmware by ODIN
- Take a look in XDA the terms im writing u (TWRP, Recovery, Download mode, ODIN, Flashing firmware). They are very important steps for solve ur problems :highfive:
Thank you very much i'll come back with the results.

Hard Brick? Soft Brick? Please, Help!

Hi, my 910G started to restart. Today, didn't boot anymore. Not even in Recovery. But now is on Download mode and says "mmc_read-fail". I've read that it could be a hard problem.. but maybe it could be a partition problem. IN that case, I need the pit file, but I can't find it. I tried to flash the stock rom using oding, but i get olways an error :S.
Please, help me!
If you can't even get to odin without mmc read, maybe it is your memory. Sorry I couldn't help, can't beat hardware failures. .Best of luck
I can give you two suggestions
1)Start from scratch.
Remove any samsung related prog from control panel of your computer
Then flash stock firmware with odin
2)Try to claim warranty and tell them you get custom when you are trying to fix it from Internet

I've installed some roms. Now I'm on Nameless Rom. The problem is when I turn off the phone. If I take out the battery, put it, and press "on button", it says "could do not normal boot mmc_read failed". But if I do that processs, and enter to recovery, tap "reset normal mode", the phone works great... What could it be?

Well, this is the new "panorama":
The phone started again, when I installed the Singapure 5.1.1 N910G Version. Then, I've installed Nameless Rom 5.1.1 Stock. In the first reboot, it reboot again, and show "MCC READING ERROR" with "Download Mode". Turned it off and on, and it works again.
The thing is that the phone wasn't working 100%. Maybe in one reboot, it works flawless for 10 minuts. Then, get a call and the phone get stuck. Need to take battery out, to get it work.
So I've installed Australian Version 5.1.1. The same. Maybe its thing of me, but I think that when I try the phone with the Sim inside, its when it worse work. It's more common to have lag in an app.
I'm getting mad, really. I want to sell it, and I can't sell it like this... because I don't know if it will work or fail.
Tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823918. Used the 4 files. No problem in any block. Not even in Ifinite loop mode, when it searchs for an error till it gets one...

#1. Flash one thing and stop messing with it! DO NOT install anything else but stock TW ROMs until you get it working.
#2 Flash the correct firmware (MODEL/BOOTLOADER VERSION)
#3 After ODIN flash, from stock recovery choose reset to factory default.

Here you have it. I done what you told me. Installed from scratch with odin, and then Factory Reset. Sometimes it takes long to boot (like, stays in "galaxy note 4 boot screen for 15 seconds). And when it turn on, it takes its time to show lockscreen.

I did find this.... So if anyone with a working N910G, they can do this.

Need to be rooted and busybox installed.
I've found it multiple places.

Correct.
I guess it's possible yours is broken. Not sure how. Except possibly flashing the wrong firmware from a different model or make phone.
That's one thing I have give Samsung a little credit on. They are trying to at least make the phone where they can't get f*cked up.
It does cost them money also to replace the phones that get wrecked by people flashing stuff randomly and turning them back in under warranty.
Not directing this at you. Hell I've turned a phone in I messed with.
I think it was messed up when I got it but I'll never know since I starting hacking into it as soon as I got it.

This does not work. I've tried it multiple times on multiple versions of Odin. This will not work if you use Boost Mobile. It either fails, hangs at flashing boot.img, or hangs at SetupConnection.

This works to get you back to stock from bootloop. I tried my hand at rooting this little SOB (TWRP,Magisk) and tripped the Knox counter bc I forgot to wipe it. Reboot came up with "Validation Failure" and I was stuck. I stumbled over this post and with nothing to lose other than $130.
First piece of advice...Use Odin 3.12.3 ONLY!! I tried the latest version and it didn't work. Download the files, place them in the appropriate boxes and flash. reboot into recovery, wipe the cache/data and you should be good. Mine took quite a while after hanging on the Boost mobile splash screen, but about 3 reboots later, it brought me to the configuration screen. It's up, running and I even got the OTA software update, but then again, it is stock.

S7 Edge bricked by flashing Chainfire root without OEM unlocked..

Hello everyone,
Sadly I've been stupid enough to flash Chainfire root trough Odin without enabling the "OEM Unlock" setting in android.
The phone is now stuck at the boot logo. Is there any way to get it to boot again? Or obtain the data that is on the phone?
It is an S7 Edge SM-G935F hero2lte
I was thinking to flash TWRP and create a backup, but I've got no idea if this is possible.
Luckily most of the pictures are on a External SD.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks for reading.
Lurninn
Download offical firmware from sammobile and flash it with Odin
Boot in download mode and flash official stock firmware...
Try flashing stock official firmware with HOME_CSC instead of CSC file so that it doesn't wipe your phone.
TWRP backup method will not work here since it also require OEM unlock and it must format /data once to remove encryption, so that it can read the partition which defeat the purpose since your current data are gone from the format.

download Kies for samsung and run emergency firmware download and install.
no need for Odin

No.
It will ask you for phone model and serial number.
Read them from the back of the phone.
Install kies, run the program, put your phone to download mode and connect to pc.
In the upper section there must be a tab where you find "emergency firmware download and install" or something like that.
This is where you will be ask for model and serial number and the restauration begins.
If you want a clean install with all the data wiped, there a custom recovery will be handy from where you format everything and after that you will use kies.
Good luck

There are 2 versions of kies, one for older devices until galaxy s4, and one for newer devices.
I can't remember wich one is, but the app warns you if you didn't install the correct version
I have to mention, the firmware on the phone is the UK one instead of the Dutch one. I did this back then to get the 7.0 update earlier.
Will the Kies method still be possible?

Thanks for your help. but: Stock my S7 comes with PHN firmware ( Which is dutch ) but recently I've downloaded the BTU firmware. ( UK Unbranded ) in order to receive the 7.0 update earlier. So, : I downloaded the latest BTU Firmware for the S7 edge.
It comes with 5 files.

Now, should I just open the HOME_CSC_OXA in the CSC tab in ODIN and flash it?

The emergency option isn't available somehow. It shows "Lists of devices requiring emergency recovery" , but the list is empty.
When i choose the firmware upgrade option, I indeed have to enter my model name + Serial number, but the message states that data WILL be wiped.
@Lurninn
Here... my bad Take a closer look
This is what i used and on my device it didn't wipe data.
I don't know if it is available for you too but i did it a couple of times when i really messed up my phones and each time my photos and videos weren't deleted.
No matter what firmware you are on right now, kies will download the latest one corresponding to your device and the country it was released for.

The thing is, my phone originally is a PHN (Dutch) Phone, however, I flashed BTU (UK) Firmware on my phone.
And btw, Could it be that your pictures were on an external SD card? because using this recovery doesn't touch the external SD. I'm still not convinced that this will keep internal data untouched. ;(
The method of flashing HOME CSC seems the most safe/logical to me at this moment.

I did it on my s6edge wich doesn't have a external SDcard support only via otg.
Regarding the firmware, i told you that kies doesn't care about that becauce it will read your original trace of csc and will download the coresponding firware ( if the original firmware was Dutch it will download Dutch firmware )
I don't tell you to use my method and i don't guarantee you that this is 100% safe for what you want, but i'm telling you that i used this method and for me it worked even on non-external SDcard phones with no data loss except the third party apps.
Analize all advices you got here and chose a method.
I' m really curious. Don't forget to post the result.
Good luck.
---------- Post added at 19:49 ---------- Previous post was at 19:46 ----------
Also i dit it on my g935f. When i bought it i did some test photos, no SDcard in it.
At home i rooted it uncorespondingly and i bricked it.
Kies was my savior and after the process my taken pictures were there

Most of my pictures are on the SD-Card, It are mostly the 3'rth party apps that I was worrying about.
BUT: I've followed NonXtreme's method, and I SUCCEED!!!
I downloaded latest BTU Firmware from Sammobile, and flashed all 4 files (and CSC_Home) trough Odin.
At first I was kinda worried because after flashing the phone booted with "Erasing" in screen. The phone successfully booted, and remained just like I left it.
You might want to try this method next time artaniss11k if you want to keep your apps & settings.
Thanks guys for your help/suggestions.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) with FRP Lock

Hello,
I just flashed TWRP and LineageOs-v16.0-UNOFFICIAL from this https://forum.xda-developers.com/samsung-a-series/orig-development/rom-lineageos-v16-0-unofficial-samsung-t3892229 and after reboot the screens shows "Custom binary blocked by FRP Lock.".
I bought this mobile phone completely legal. I read a lot about this, but I do not really understand what the purpose this functionality has.
When I started flashing TWRP on it, I haven't done a "Factory Reset" in the original Firmware. So I of course don't know the Google Account from the previous owner. I also don't now why the hell the Google Account is responsible for this.
I read, that with flashing Stock Rom and activating "OEM Unlocking" and the problem should be solved. I have never heared of "OEM unlocking" before, on my other phones I don't even have this point in the developer options.
Is this the solution? And where can I get a Stock Rom which will work?

Hello. Can you tell me what your variant of the phone is (SM-A510XX)(what are the numbers or letters which replace the "XX".
With the variant, I can help you get the stock rom and give you a guide on how to flash the stock rom via Odin. Hope this helps.:good:

No you don't need payment method for downloading from sammobile, Only needed if you want to download at high speeds. Provide me the link where you found your firmware from sammobile. With that link, I can download it, upload it to high speed servers, and then give you the link where you can download. I am asking for the link as I don't know what country you live in and therefore don't know the correct firmware. By the what I mean SM-A510xx, replace the "xx" and give the country code or the country you live in so that I can find the firmware as the number you gave me (A510FXX7CRJ6) is not what I meant and that number is a firmware number and not the device number.
ok, so after your post i tried another time to get an account on sammobile.com and now i succeeded. So the download is running atm. But the next question is; how am i supposed to get by the FRP lock? Cuz i tried to flash TWRP on it with odin, but got stopped by the FRP lock.

No. You don't need TWRP to flash stock rom via Odin. Just get the phone into download mode and flash the stock firmware via odin. You flash it the same way as you flash TWRP but just use the stock firmware. Hope this helps. Also, please make sure that the firmware is correct and if not, your phone will be stuck in a boot loop.

Yup the download went very slow, took 2 hours to complete. So i succeeded with flahsing stock android on the phone. But when i booted the phone, it instantly told me that an unauthorised wipe took place and before i could continue with starting the phone, i had to log in with the google account which was on the phone before the wipe. So can any1 help me with this, cuz im out of options here.

You have two options. The google account has a cool off period and I read that if you wait 24 hours, the login will be gone. However, on old android phones, you have to wait 72 hours. But if you go to a Samsung service center, they will remove the logins for free.
I found this website where you can bypass the lock but I am not sure if it works. Do the samsung bypass and not any other brands. Try it anyway: https://www.unlockunit.com/blog/bypass-google-account-verification-factory-reset-protection/
