Too much free space on home screen after update ? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Today I installed new update on my S7 Edge XEO, and I noticed that after update above first widget there is a lot of free space.
Version number: G935FXXU1DQGQ.
I tried with another widget and icon's but there is still so much free space.
Look at screenshot:

I've noticed this too, makes the launcher look really ugly when using the weather widget at the top. Also noticed there is less space at the bottom too by the dock. I think the July update updated the launcher version number.

usually this space for google search bar

My touchwhiz version is now 5.8.84.

Really annoying too as you can't update to the s8 launcher after the July patch.

Hmmm...which update? I just got an update yesterday and am now on the July 1 security patch and my Touchwiz is 5.8..67. The last 4 digits of the update are BQG4 on my device.
The space on mine appears fine with this latest update:

My build number ends in - DQG1

It happened to me after update to G935FXXU1DQGQ with July security patch.
Touchwiz version is 5.8.84. I don't know what version was before update.

I noticed only free space at the top. Bottom looks fine.
Look at my compare S7 Edge and A5 2016 free space:
S7 Edge:
A5 2016:
100% this is a software problem.

If you look at your pictures the distance between the top of the dock icons and the dots of the pages seems less after the update, there should be a bigger gap. Its certainly a weird software issue. Any idea of a fix?

Downgrade or wait for Samsung to release a patch.
Maybe they added or forgot <br> somewhere
Let's compare the same widget's on A5 2016 an S6 Edge
A5 2016:
S7 Edge:

Quite a difference! Very annoying.

I have noticed same problem on J5 2016 after update to J510FNXXU2AQG3. Look:
Before:
After:
Keep in mind that this phone is on Marshmallow.

Same here, after update my home screen looks terribly amateurish, like I just couldn't get it right all the way. I hope this will be fixed soon because I really spent time creating the perfect home screen and I hate to see it now!

Edit: I've been looking around and searching everywhere for people reporting this problem but was shocked to find just 1 other thread on SamMobile?! Does anyone know what this might mean in terms of the possibility this bug will or will not be addressed? I would be very pissed if not, because there's no workaround and looking at it keeps irritating me [emoji31]

It just keeps bothering me, so here I am again. I'm convinced it's a bug because screenspace is sacred nowadays. Developers are always looking for new ways to create more space and utilize existing space in the most efficient ways possible. The size of this empty space is massive, considering the above. Seen from that point of view it's almost a crime to waste that much space. In fact I had to rearrange the complete layout of my home screen just to mask the empty space as much as possible, because the sight of it really annoyed me. Take note, I designed this layout many years ago and it has always served me very well because of the huge amount of information it shows in an orderly way that even suits the eye. Now I have to settle for the second best way and I believe that's unacceptable for a high-end device like this. So I contacted Samsung through Twitter, which led to this indecisive correspondence:
https://twitter.com/SamsungMobileNL/status/914089953289793536
So it may be clear that I'm unhappy with my device. For the first time ever, though. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Did this ever get fixed? Soooo annoying!

Nope, not even by the latest update. I was convinced a fix would be included in the first update following the one that messed things up, but I unfortunately was wrong. I'm afraid this bug effects too little people for Samsung to do something about it. So I'm stuck with a high-end device that has a non-defected but however broken homescreen that cannot be designed the way I want to. Thanks Samsung!

Yeah, I unbranded my T-Mobile NL unit to PHN firmware and immediately noticed it. Went back to the T-Mobile branded firmware which interestingly doesnt have this issue, despite it being up to date.

I guess the only way to get rid of this **** is to replace the firmware myself because of Samsung forsaking it's obligations. Just the thought of having to desecrate this expensive device myself drives me stark raving mad, considering the huge amount of money I payed for it and therefore assuming I'll never be effected by this kind of trouble.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. Glad T-Mobile caught the mistake and got it fixed in their firmware. If you don't want to change your firmware (or are not on T-Mobile), you could try the S8's launcher: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsu...touchwiz-home-6-1-82-19-android-apk-download/
I've tried it once before and this is what the gaps end up looking like:

Ok ?
Wait .. Isn't that a good thing , no bloat - ware ...
A couple of months back Samsung signed an agreement with Google that they will try to reduce the modifications to the stock Android experience
I think this is the result of that agreement.
The only 4.4 ROM out right now is for the Columbian Wi-Fi version. It could be the same ROM as for other markets or it may not be. Magazine UX is still on the N10.1-14 microsite where it first appeared after the Pro's started shipping. It may mean something or it may not.
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/2014galaxynote10.1/feature.html
If it does end up permanently missing I won't be too upset. When M-UX was first shown at CES I thought it was cool because there were a ton of widgets and you could create tiles for any installed app. In and of itself it could have been a potential alternate UI. What was released with the Pro's was completely neutered. From three home pages with one being the main home screen it's been reduced to one tagged on at the end of the traditional TW home pages. Most of the widgets left are just modular pieces of My Magazine which means it went from being a hidden pull-up to mandatorily consuming a home page that could be used for other things instead. I use all my home pages so wasn't keen on giving one up to M-UX in its current state. It's not even called Magazine UX anymore. It's now "Content Home."
There is a downside. I was kind of hoping the N10.1-14 would have been made s/w compatible with the Pro's to increase the frequency of updates received. If M-UX and other UI-based features from the Pro's have been left out we'll end up being an odd duck and 4.4 might be the last major update we see. It certainly won't help update timing, that's for sure.
Time will tell...
You really want that bloated crap? I'm glad it's not on there.

If I wanted AOSP I wouldn't have spent what I did on a tablet that has more added on top of Android than any other device on the planet. You'll find this shocking but some folks actually do use the N10.1-14 to get work done and a lot of that "bloated crap" is what makes that possible.
Actually I wasn't talking to you hammer, it was for the op.

My bad. But this is a mixed forum. 1/3 actually use the N10.1-14 as a creation/productivity device as Samsung intended. 1/3 bought if for the high-end h/w, stripped it bare s/w wise, and I guess use it primarily for consumption and gaming. The other 1/3 are somewhere in between. What pleases one group pisses the other off. To each their own.
S Pen and s/w combined are more important to Note purchasers than the h/w. Even the Samsung brand is more important than h/w. Maybe not on XDA but for the rest of the masses that make up 95+% of Note sales. TW won't win any design awards but it does provide a level of functionality, especially on the Note's, that makes having it a positive; at least for me.

We actually agree. Before M-UX got neutered I was cautiously excited. Mostly for the interactive widgets that could be potential productivity boosters and getting more content on each page. As it stands now it's just a space wasting news feed. The Pro's also lost Samsung Hub which we'll retain. Samsung's videos can be stored on external SD and played back in Pop-up-play which is great for long trips.

The version of M-UX in the N12 is crippled like described above. Here's a thread from the N12 forum that discusses what's missing along with a kind of schizophrenic discussion on how to (theoretically) get the missing components back. People in the N12 forum are trying to figure out how to disable/remove M-UX so they can get a normal home page back. The grass is always greener...

if its just two different launchers and a few other apks, i dont see why not. its like how i have blinkfeed and lg home flashed on top of my nexus 5 which is also running the GEL and nova lol
I'm in the "who gives a ****" crowd. It's a bloated gimmick that'd be used one time and abandoned.
Hancom Office
The only thing I'm hoping for when the 4.4 is eleased for U.S. is the Hancom Office software. Won't loose any sleep if they exclude the Magazine UX. I had a Pro 8.4 and a Note 12.2(to big) and really didn't like it.
I have the note 12.2 and I dont use magazine ux. Actually bought nova prime finally for it. Like barry said if it had been released like it was at ces I would have loved it. But as it is it is nuetered and boring. It is still pretty sexy looking imo.

Coming soon sounds worse than a definite month like June.
No, they set it to coming soon when it's near approach date. This happened with the Nexus 5 update.
Coming soon means within days or a couple weeks at most, it's their lowest date range.

Why did Rogers have anything to do with a Nexus update?
Seriously? They issue the update to customers with Nexus 5's. I'm referring to Rogers update schedule... It was the same case with the Nexus 5 update from Rogers, it was previously a month, then it said coming soon...

If you're asking this question seriously, I would say probably right around when the S8 rolls out. The S4 got 5.0.1 a few days after the S6 was released - so it seems like we get about 2 years of update coverage. That seems pretty reasonable to me for a two year old flagship (or more than reasonable, given that I last about 6 months per phone).
looking forward to it , i just hope pinpong root will be supposed

Would you think its still worth getting an S6 even with this flaw? I have an upgrade on Rogers, and the S6 seems like the best option. However, I feel this bug may drive me crazy.

The issue is that the S6 has to keep reloading apps, Say you open a webpage on chrome, then exit to another app. switching back to chrome will reload the page, when the page was supposed to be stored in memory.
The problem is that for a premium device which costs 600+, there should be flaws like this.

did the device reboot into a recovery to install the update? curious is someone dropped the ball and left a open bootloader on the released device OR its just the monthly security patch, prob the latter...
further investigations...it did include a new bootloader. i would hold of on installing this if you want root. you never know
Lol yeah not rooting, leaving it alone
I did not install the update. I just love that they say that ATT wants to install an update and give no more information as to what or why. After my upgrade experience I'm not real trusting and was hoping someone could report what it is. Want to compare?
Sadly, it's probably a bunch of good fixes bundled in with some unwanted bloatware and security "enhancements". Lol
BUT... that's just pure conjecture on my part, as I watch the N7 forums and live vicariously through you all. I'm still happy with my rooted Note 3, can't justify the upgrade cost, can't live without my IR blaster, and so will wait.
So, anyone know whats in the update(is it just the Android Aug security update)? Any chance it really would affect root? For me, the only reason to not root is Samsung Pay and since it doesn't support either one of my cards, not worried about that "feature".

It does contain a new Bootloader, and the update was prob forced upon you. Yesterday my device buzzed in my pocket, heard the ATT ding ding dong sound. Pulled my Note out and it was optimizing apps (about 50 of them). Seems they forced the update to my Note, even though I had clicked "install later" many times through-out the day. bastards!
I believe it's just a security update.

The only way to keep from downloading an update is to have Wi-Fi turned off or disable the update totally with package disabler pro. The phone automatically downloads any update if you are connected to Wi-Fi and will install it even if you hit install later. The phone does the install after the third time you decline it. All of my Samsung phones have done this.

Okay i sh*t you not, I read this on lunch and said in my head there's no way it forced itself, or maybe it's an option to disable under developer settings. Got off lunch and felt my phone vibrate because it was turning back on. Pulled my phone out and saw that it was optimizing apps and I'm like like wtfffffff out really forced itself. I wasnt on Wi-Fi or anything and my phones battery was at like 30% so i honestly couldn't believe it did the update as such a low battery without asking, crazy. ?

The same issue
I have just the same problem . To be honest, I was "5 minutes away" to go the store as my HTC 10 Evo/Bolt is 5 days old only. But if that not "my unique case" then the update may be the reason.
Did you post any info directly to the HTC?
Please stay in touch as I'll do.
Black Screen
I started experiencing the same issue in December, in addition eventually the issue progresses to screen artifacting and flickering. I am on my second phone and about to send that one in for a replacement due to re-occurrence of the issue.
HTC has about a four week turn around time, so beware. If you have really bad issues ask to speak to the escalations supervisor.
Many people are experiencing this issue. Some have gone through 3-4 replacements already with each new one having the same issue. My BOLT only experiences this when I pull it out of my pocket and unlock. Can be fixed temporarily by giving the right hand side of screen a firm tap. Anybody have any ideas on a fix?
I'm on my 3rd phone due to that issue. You just have to exchange it. No way to fix it.
Mine just started jumping around only on the right side has not blacked out yet

my Bolt is not currently active, so I haven't been using much, but I do recall the screen jumping around once when I pulled it out to check something...just checked it again and it's fine...weird
I wonder if anyone has a perfectly working (for months) and not overheating bolt. I've gone through 3. Should be recalled.

Im curious if you have taken all the OTA updates? My Bolt was fine for about 3 months before i had severy lag issues but not the screen problem. I took it back yesterday and got a new one. My new one is on an old software version 1.15.651.11 and there have been 3 updates since this version. I have not updated yet.
Thanks,
Yes, def it was after the Android OTA updates. Curious if anyone experience the problem with updating.
Just got bolt #3 let's hope this one stays good

I have taken all updates and so far have had no complaints the only time I've had it get warm was when I was charging and playing Pokemon go. No unusual lagging or screen problems so far I am also unlocked and s off I have flashed bb rom and am currently stock right now between the two I have had I good experience so far I hope htc gets the kinks out because this phone even though has an older processor is a good device.
I took .6 so far so good haven't noticed excessive heat

I too like the phone except for the kinks. I have taken OTA for .15 anc .22 without any issues. Then after about another day it is telling me to update to the new 1.32.651.6. everything is good but i guess i will take the update and hope for the best.
Recently I've been having trouble with the screen staying black with key pad lit on wake on gesture or power button. That may have been caused by my case... But more concerning is the screen flickering. It seems to come about more as the day goes on. When it starts to happen I tried rebooting, and it does it during boot too. I wonder about the longevity of this phone

OTA of 47.1.A.12.75

I woke up this morning to an OTA update of .12.75. I have never heard or seen this update before. It's not even on Sony's website: https://support.sonymobile.com/us/xperiaxzpremiumdualsim/kb/80193074318fc728015f3fe5d5df007ced/
Any ideas what this is? Maybe just a security update, but there was one just released the first of the year.

I do not know, what details this fw has got, but at least it seems to now have shown up at xpericheck:
https://xpericheck.com/device/G8142
Perhaps check the security updates, I think 5.Jan+ should have the spectre(?)/meldtdown(?) fixes.

February security patch
Only for DualSIM, for now.
https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_xz_premium_patch_meltdown_spectre-news-29510.php
Meltdown and Spectre patches, not much more.
Let's see what this does to the performance and baterry life. Tbh, I'm reluctant to do this update, seeing what those patches did to my Windows PCs. I hope it won't have such a negative impact on Android smartphones.

Based on that article the Meltdown and Spectre patches for Google devices have a “negligible impact on performance.”
Of course they don't mention anything about battery life. *Shrug*
Maybe I'll be the Guinea Pig and install it giving my impressions and observations of performance and battery life.
So I have installed the update and did some quick benchmarks before and after the update. Interesting results. So naturally the benchmarks that happened in the morning were before I installed the update and the ones in the afternoon were after I installed the update.
As for the battery benchmark, I simply ran each test for 1 hour 10 minutes. So yea, the new update provided better battery performance but worse single core... by a little. Multi-core was a tad better with the new update. This of course is not all inclusive results, as I only ran one benchmark, and that has no indication of real-life performance. If I don't notice anything drastic in the next few days, I won't post anything else here, otherwise I will keep you posted.

have you tried playing videos in landscape? and have you tried browsing pictures using the Album app?
after updating, mine shows a weird flickering line when doing the above mentioned.
did not notice that prior to the update.

No problems with album or video playing. The backlight oversensitive problem appears to be fixed.
Got the update this morning on my simple SIM XZ Premium.
I also noticed some changes like in the "appearance" settings where it now look like on the XA2 series.

Yup, it' a lot less twitchy now, it adjusts gradually and a bit slower on response, just as it should be.
I have to check if they fixed it on the XZ as well, the issue was even more noticable on it after Oreo upgrade, the screen would literally flicker rapidly while auto-adjusting the brightness, it wasn't that bad on the XZP when I got it.
With this new update they have disabled the "swipe up with finger" gesture on the homescreen that opens up the app drawer.
I really liked that feature.

You sure about that? Cause I still have it. What version of XperiaHome are you running? I'm on 11.2.A.09, got it from the beta program.

Mine is still here but I noticed a new transition when swiping, don't know if it's due to this update or a Play Store one.
Also the Clock icon has changed.
