Tips for max battery and performance without root - LG G6 Questions and Answers

Hi guys,
I'm picking up an H870DS and don't plan on rooting (not like I can atm anyway) so I just wanted to start a thread on what you guys did to max out your battery life and performance without having to use root. Maybe some settings drain batt or maybe you disable certain apps. Let me know! You can also warn about what things cause battery drain and such so other users can avoid them.
Add to this thread and I'll try my best to edit this and compile your answers below.

Yes, system sucks a lot. Even just removing useless app (like quickmemo+, lg health, facebook pre-installed bloatware) you can gain a little improvement in standby consumption.

Yep, that is why I am planning to unlock bootloader and install a ROM. Have you done it?

Not for the moment being, I don't want to lose warrenty nor I have problems with battery life (I usually get 4-4h30m of SoT over 24 hours), the only major battery drainer is the frikking LTE once I'm out of wifi range. I hope that they find a way to make it suck a little less

Okay. Mine arrived yesterday, I don't know how is the battery, but I feel the animations a little laggy, do you feel it? That's my main problem.

No, I've read some people complain about that, I personally haven't had that problem so far, neither with stock launcher nor nova.
Maybe since it arrived just yesterday, you could try with a factory reset and, if prompted, choose not to install lg apps when asked.

Just remember you can delete any app (even system ones) with adb, look fo rthe thread on removing bloatware, it describes the process, was quite easy, I deleted LG Health, switcher, and few others, also Google newsstand, music and movies and definitely have seen a difference, remember to also disable the LDB function (LG 24/7 tracking of phone) with the hidden menu, that also makes a difference to battery life!

I know. Actually, the first answer in this thread was mine pointing to that thread.

The key to good battery life on SGS 2 is

persistence (with a modicum of technical ability).
Ever since I received my SGS 2 I've been plagued with "poor" battery performance - The stock ROM that came with it wouldn't stay charged longer than 12 hours when I was doing nothing with it and barely 6 hrs when I used it. I quickly discovered that Samsung had released a newer version via KIES, updated it and it improved it, not life changing but just enough to see me through the working day.
I was also disillusioned with the stock ROM that came with the phone - too much "bloatware" that I'd never use. Found this forum and started by rooting the phone, then using CWM and Titanium Backup to make full backups before moving on to loading custom roms. Tried the 3 that seemed most popular and stable - VillainROM, LightningROM and DarkyROM.
Much preferred Lightning ROM but after I'd installed it found that battery life was abysmal to the extent that I could have the phone plugged in and charging via USB and the battery would continue to go DOWN!
After restoring back to a CWM backup I did more research and found an app that would let me know what was killing the battery (see link at end). I re-installed the Lightning ROM and found that a security application called Privacy Guard (not LBE Privacy Guard) was chewing the battery up. This now made sense as this particular app had stopped working as it should after upgrading to Lightning ROM.
Un-installing this app made a massive difference to the battery life.
During this period I did have Juice Defender installed and since rooting the phone SetCPU. I had also encountered the "issue" with SetCPU appearing to cause reboots, closedowns and had turned off the functionality. But I was trying to use setCPU under the stock ROMS not a custom rom.
Since fixing the Privacy Guard issue and performing a clean install of Lightning ROM I now have a phone which lost only 3% battery last night (almost 8 1/2 hours).
I now have Juice Defender Ultimate, SetCPU configured to on-demand between 200Mhz and 1Ghz (I raise manually when I play games needing 1.4 or 1.6Ghz), Timeriffic to turn stuff off when I don't need it.
I have also put time into either removing or freezing (using TB) apps that I won't need.
Yes when I use the phone the battery goes down but it's a powerful phone and I treat it the same as a laptop running on batteries - The more I use it the less the battery lasts, get use to it people!

If you use it correctly and know what it is doing = yes.
A solid tip is to never ever ever ever ever ever ever use any of the bloatware provided by Samsung. Don't even start it once because some stay active even if you don't use them. They drain the life out your battery and there are enough good alternatives.

I would love to hear about your settings.
It's an old one and oft repeated, but for anyone fresh to the 4378 (and counting) battery life threads, get out of Google Latitude and stay out - kills the battery
I'm wondering if you use your phone frequently all day and JD constantly renegotiating connections is it better to not use it at all
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
If you are using yout phone really frequently (data) then JD is useless, but for me it really good.
I have bad signal at work, so I have JD set to sync every hour, preferred wifi and automatic night mode when i'm asleep.
Data on when screen on and everything is fine (for me).
Is there a safe way to delete bloatware apps? I mean what if I delete something that messes up the phone? Do I need to reinstall the Rom?

It works or not is a different matter, IMO it is not needed, nothing is needed actually. Just install JD and you will see it under Wakelocks in Better Battery Stats. So it drains more than saving it.

For working and busy people, i think you guys can get better battery life than me. As a student in a holiday(nothing to do except playing ps3 and running errands), I most of the time will unlock the sgs2 whenever i glanced or watched it. moving the icons around, changing launchers, putting widgets, etc... i took so many times using sgs2 everyday and it can last about 6-7 hours with almost all the time screen on except when i sleep.
for me, 10 hours is already ok. get used to it guys. buy a spare battery, or an external charger. no need to worries at all. you dont want to be a freak for battery life. constantly checking the battery and whats draining them. its not cool~~ use it to the fullest! until the manufacturers make a phone with large battery capacity! i mean officially. those 3rd party large battery are just a show off. they drain as much as the stock ones.

Not sure - it may have dependencies with other more useful tools such as Maps. Just make sure you are logged out and keep clear of it - it's reasonably well behaved if left alone.
I have always used Stock not rooted yet and get around 13-19 hours, I don't use the samsung hubs, but have facebook, twitter, google + and three emails constantly running and use wifi browsing a lot
so am quiet happy as it is hence no need to root although I like flashing the new firmwares via ODIN
Just a brainwave??
With Titanium Backup you can freeze your unwanted apps. When the phone is working without problems you can safely remove the frozen apps (after making a backup of course)

I noticed that if you have alot of widgets running you will ruin your battery life. I dont use many and got amazing battery life out of the Stock Rom.
I am now using cognition rom and easily have the battery last all day still....
Cognition - Imo best samsung based rom on the s2, super stable with battery life on first flash lasting 18hrs+. If you havent tried it id suggest you did.

36-38 Hours Battery Life!
I moved over from the HD2 a month ago. One of the things that astonishes me about the S2 is the battery life.
36-38 hours is the norm for me.
This is with:
- VillainRom
- Push Email (heavy use ~ 100 per day)
- No Lattitude
- No Wifi (HSDPA sufficient)
- No Bluetooth
I don't spend a lot of time making calls but being relatively new I am constantly fidgeting with it.

[Q] ANDROID IS JUNK! (Battery "life")

Every time I track down what is sucking my battery Google come up with a new way for Android to suck even more. I have sorted out various apps, location services, underclocking, etc. Now I find that when there is an update waiting the Play Store punishes me by sucking the juice out of the battery - even though I have it set to automatic updates and to give me notifications if there are updates waiting. No notifications and sometimes the waiting update doesn't even show up in My Apps, unless you switch to the Store Home and then back to My Apps. It might make a little bit of sense if these app updates were waiting for you to approve a change to the permissions but that isn't the case.
I have this problem on my Nexus 4 running rooted stock Android 4.4.4 AND on my waterproof Moto Defy+ running uprooted stock 2.3, so I'm guessing it is the Play Store which is junk. Does anybody know a solution to this? Please? I have tried searching for solutions but there are SO many battery/Android OS problems that I haven't been able to find the answer for this particular one.
I'm almost tempted to go for an iPhone - except that they are junk too. Maybe my next phone should be a Nokia 3310.
(BTW "junk" wasn't the word I originally used)
You're never going to get zero percent battery use, maybe your expectations are out of line?
How much screen on time do you out of a full charge? And what's your %/hour drop when the phone is sitting untouched?

google doesnt come up with a new way for android to suck more battery , YOU DO , note the keyword is YOU , now figure it out .
I was getting under 2% per hour drain then, without me making any changes, when updates came along and Android didn't tell me and Android decided to suck my battery it goes to something like 10% per hour

battery life is all dependent on YOUR personal usage, your personal setup, your personal decision to install whatever apps, and very much your phone/data signal. if your data/phone signal is only so so, then youyr battery life will only be so so. if you have things draining your battery besides for your signal and use, its up to you to figure out why. thye battery klife of my nexus 4 and nexus 5, actually, all androids that ive ever owned, has been wonderful. i get the same google apps updates as you, no less. so you have to figure it out.
OK, so as I said previously, with no changes made by Me I am finding that when app updates come along my Nexus doesn't alert me to the need to update but if I don't spot that an update is needed "Android OS" usage climbs and drains my battery until I look for an app update and update it. This is without loading any new apps and with the good signal I always have and all the things I normally have turned off (wifi, BT, location history, Google Now, etc) and slightly underclocked (1.2 GHz).
I'm sorry if criticising Android has offended people but I'm asking if anyone can help me solve yet another battery drain. Assuming that I'm doing something wrong isn't helping unless you can point me at what I'm doing wrong. All I am seeing is that I've sorted out all the known battery drains in my personal set up and yet updates, over which I have no apparent control, are causing another drain. I would like to hear from anyone who might be able to help and I apologise to anyone who is offended that I see an imperfection in the phone we have all chosen.
Thanks in anticipation.

App updates come along. Play Store is set to give notifications and to auto-update. Some app updates don't give notifications and "Android OS" causes a load of wakelocks until I spot that the update needs doing and do it manually. Same thing happens on my wife's stock Nexus 4. We are both in the Uk on Three network and have good signal.
I have BBS but I need to see what it says when I get this app update problem. I will post my findings when I get the info. If nobody here recognises this problem maybe I need to look at what is similar between our two Nexus 4s. I know we both have WhatsApp and, of course, all the Google apps, both on 4.4.4 but there the similarities end.

Why don't you try a ROM other than stock? I have flashed countless phones and tuned ROMs always offer better battery life. I don't understand why people go through all the effort of rooting then stick with stock ROMs. I know the general consensus is that the stock ROM (on the Nexus anyway) is one of the best, but let me tell you the general consensus is wrong. It is good, but there are much better custom ROMs.
Oh, and stock 2.3 on the Defy??? Come on man, why are you on XDA? This isn't the Carphone Warehouse helpdesk.
Try something barebones - no bloatware/small rom and choose barebones GAPPS. This will make a huge difference in battery life before you even dive in and stark tweaking further.

one more thing, you do not need root or to be rooted to run a custom rom or kernel. the only thing that root is need for is to change system files or to run root apps. but yea, you can get great battery life on stock.
I have been getting great battery life from the stock ROM after a few tweaks apart from this problem with updates. I have had a couple of other ROMs on this phone but went back to stock after the last couple of system updates. When I'm not having this particular battery drain then, if I leave the phone alone, I'm getting about 1%/hr battery drain. Also my wife doesn't want her Nexus "messed about with" and it helps if the two are fairly similar. Xposed is the big difference between the two.
The Defy+ is on 2.3 because I only use it when I'm out hiking and it might rain. The Defy is not easy to upgrade and 2.3 was where Android got good, so I'm OK with it, if that's all right with you.
BTW I have a degree in Electronics & Physics plus 17 years postgraduate experience in software engineering in the defence sector. So it's not that I'm not technical I just choose not to make a hobby out of keeping my phones working.

A stripped down ROM running only the bare minimum can greatly improve battery life! Just have a sift through some custom ROMs and you will find the ones that are tuned to do such a thing.
Also in reply to others here, the advantage of being rooted means you can remove unwanted system apps, underclock etc which if you're concerned about battery life would be quite important I would have thought.

This is what you need to do if you want to persist with the stock ROM. I personally have used betterbatterystats with success. Use this to check wakelocks as these are often the cause of mystery battery drain. There is an old but useful guide to that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827676

GPS Awake Time

So I've been one of those suffering from "not-the-best" battery life... on average I get about 2 to 2.5 hours of SOT and a total battery life of about 12 hours. This after disabling pretty much every single notification, setting auto brightness with 70%, using high accuracy GPS, doing a lot of photography, moderate amount of surfing/web video watching, very little texting and no gaming. I I go hard and use it a lot more than usual, I'll get 7-8 hours of battery life.
My question though is, I looked under Android System right now and with 7h52m of usage, I have a GPS on time of 3h26m. I haven't used maps but have used facebook, flickr, and instagram.... isn't that high? Or is that normal for the high accuracy mode?
Assuming you have rooted, download App Ops and disable the GPS app's ability to keep the phone awake.
I'm not sure where to check, to look at my GPS time with a Verizon model?
But, just to mention the simple stuff, you could change to Networks Only, if approximate locations were sufficient.

But does that hinder the quality of my signal strength when I am in MAPS actively?
I'm rooted, I use tasker and secure settings to turn GPS on only when I'm using certain apps like maps.

Yes, it becomes less accurate, and is not suitable for use with navigation/maps.
Rightly or wrongly, I leave Location set to Networks Only (battery saving), unless I'm using the phone for navigation. Then I change it to GPS Only, or maybe High Accuracy.
I made a shortcut to Location on my home screen, to make this process quicker. It sounds like, with root, this switching back and forth can be automated.

Huh? Wait, I was responding to someone who choose to be snarky. I had a day specific question... With high accuracy on, is half that time with GPS awake normal. Which has not been answered.

I know, and I was just letting you know that I understand where u are coming from! Anyways, ever since I have rooted too, I am getting my GPS staying on for long periods of time when I'm not using it. I have just turned it off until I figure what's causing it. I'm sure it's just a rogue app that has to be deleted or else I froze something with Titanium Backup that's causing the issue. Anyways, i will report back if I find out exactly what it was.
I always leave mine on high accuracy. It should have little effect on the battery. If it's causing a high drain, there's something not quite right.
As stated above, you could use Tasker to disable it and turn it on when running maps etc.
I would also like to know whats causing this. It has happened all the time I have owned the phone. So root or not does not make a difference. Also mine is non carrier 815 eur model so carrier bloat is not the culprint. I have already taken location permission off from most of the apps but no use. So if anyone knows the solution or how to find the toque app I would really really appreciate if you told about it.

Done, but is there a way to see what uses gps?
EDIT: Never mind. Found a way to find out what uses GPS using App ops. It seems it was Google search app. Dont know how or why but seems like something had enabled location history even thought I remember disabling it from the settings. Lets see does the GPS/battery use drop significantly.

So I already disabled location history many weeks ago. So I have no freakin' clue why my battery sheds so fast...
btw I am on VZW.
Try what I did if you are rooted use App ops to find out what has asked for your location. Mine was of course first Android system etc but after that it said Google Search app. Mine seems at least better now. Not perfect but much better.
And actually even if you are not rooted you can use the built in permission manager.

UPDATED! FIX: improve standby drain! (not sure if exynos only?)

So I would like this tip to be there for as many people as possible and not let it get lost in some thread. Already got some great feedback from other who tried this too.
I do not have any feedback yet from snapdragon users, so results could be different there
In settings ==> apps==> show system apps.
Disable and then enable the following:
- Google Services Framework
- Google play store
- Google Play services (here, only wipe all data en cache).
After you enabled it, these services will update themselves again in a few minutes. But with one big change: a great standby battery usage!
UPDATE!
So it seems I had forgotten some other settings that I changed also, until I read someone else his post. So for here some additional steps:
- privacy -> location -> increase precision: set wifi en bluetooth off
- privacy -> location> location history: remove location history, and turn all other devices other then THIS DEVICE, to off.
After doing all steps, do a restart. Just to be sure .
Let me know if it helped you too
Just did it, will report back with results

What i did last night was disable it that 3 and go to bed and charge the phone and this morning i turn in the 4G to go to work , and what i notice was the battery last i bit more , i notice the difference.
But as we know we can live without google services.
Now i see google services is one of the problem.
The standby only at night i can tell something.
Already losing only 2% battery overnight on wifi lol
How do I wipe the cache here? Also no option to disable or even stop here.
Nevermind I figured it out.
Unfortunately, this didn't help me. I'm still losing ~2% / hour, even overnight on WiFi.

Did you enable Google backup? Just trying to find out why it works. It's the only thing I have disabled while using this trick.
I have had Google backup disabled prior. Battery life still miserable. Did this trick seeing how it works.
This is where I am at now. I don't think this solution had any impact on my battery life. I was able to achieve these kinds of stats day one of the upgrade on tmobile with APG1 FIRMWARE. prior to that update less than 4 hours SOT. Where I'm at now isn't terrible, but it certainly could be better

well this is a great SOT for a mix usage..... I will test this method tonight and I will comeback tomorrow with the solution I used for the past week.

You're saying my stats are great? I have GPS toggled off and Google back up disabled. I think battery life largely depends on what you're doing. Seems like you get much more life out of watching YouTube versus texting, or something similar. Also, no wifi usage today.

report there if you saw some improvement, for me doing that stuff really changed everything and keep in mind that I have everything enabled.

I'm assuming you're referencing the WiFi glitch you noted on your device? In that case I generally don't use wifi much. Even when I'm at home I just never think to turn it on. I'm a nurse, so at work I'm moving around and jumping from modem to modem, plus all lines are monitored and I just feel uncomfortable with that. There is one unsecured connection which happens to be where my office is located, but like I said I bounce around at work a lot.
While I never thought I would see the day that I was able to achieve 6 hours SOT, somehow I did. I'm attributing it mostly to the most recent Tmobile update although I did follow the instructions in this video, but based upon previous usage drain prior to applying this method, it seems to be on par.
Granted I do have location services turned off as well as Google back up, which has not been of any help historically. So with that being said I am finally pleased with the battery life I managed to achieved. However I will continue to monitor it as battery drain on this phone just seems so day to day.
nevermind. Happy it helped

Install titanium backup app and disable/freeze knox and security log agent.your phone is rooted so this apps must be disable cuz they always keep checking for security stuff and you will end up draning battery.also uninstall apps that you dont use this will also help a lot to save battery.

You can uninstall them it will not effect your system at all.but be careful dont uninstall system apps you dont know.just delete all knox related apps and security log agent.and apps like drive flipboard dropbox etc. all this apps you can download from playstore again.so apps that you dont use uninstall them and reboot.

This. Mine is now providing me with less than 3 hour SoT, which was around 5-6 hours easy. So basically over 80 percent decrease in backup. Also phone will shut down at 10% sometimes, 5% next time. My phone is just eight months old, I am kind of a heavy user, I am forced to charge my phone twice a day sometimes, and I have always used the Fast Charging option, which probably is the culprit.
Whatever you do nothing will help, you gotta buy a new battery, if your results are as significant as mine. And for the new battery don't use the Fast Charging option if you wanna get the most out of it.

Drain the battery fully, then recharge it. Repeat this process two more times and your battery should be calibrated.

Calibration resets the power management circuit in the battery and your device. So that they can communicate efficiently so that the battery functions effectively.

So the device must close from down battery-0% or I must wait until to go 1%?

I really can't say mate, it sure as hell looks like original, but all the fake ones do anyway right? If you are 100% certain that store sells authentic products then go on, otherwise I will request you to buy from them Samsung cafes or malls locally, whatever it is called in your country.
