Galaxy s4 Kitkat4.4.2 rooted - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy s4 Kitkat4.4.2 rooted with dr.phone removed all the bloat ware with TitaniumBackup Pro.I tried to flash to 6.0.0 using odin3_v3.12.5 which failed, see screensots for the errors. I tried other andriod versions including the factory one for this phone all from: androidmtk.com/download-samsung-stock-rom. I have not been able to flash any roms with odin not even custom roms. Any help on this is appreciated! After that I had a problem with samsung keyboad and had to do a factory reset to correct this. Afer which all the bloat ware I removed was no longer there after the factory reset. How did this change of unistalling apps go to the recovery rom? I want to be able to integrate all my additional apps into the rom. Used Titanium pro to convert a few programs from user to system aps such as esFile exsplorer and airdriod, also to integrate updates into the rom. I still need to learn some things about TitaniumBackup and how I use it to make a recovery rom built into the device. Also looking for a video player free of ads that allows you to make playlists, and continuously play videos, and be ableto run in the bkrd w/o stopping play while doing tasks such as texting. These are the issues that need the most attention for now.

There is no Android 6.0 for the s4 and you cannot flash custom ROMs with Odin.

First of all , i would recommended you do a full wipe and make the system clean. After do your necessary stuff and once you done/
i used VLC beta as my video and audio player. You can use that

i actually have a s3 mini with the same kitkat os that is on the s4 and have been using that for trial and error stuff. after i posted that i did a factory reset and learned that with titanium bkup i made a few up system apps and made an update.zip which has the removed bloatware and the couple apps i made system apps. airdriod did not retain its log in info which is something i want so if someone stole my phone and did a factory reset i would still have access to it and be able to locate it. i had vlc and 321 player installed but both of these do not continuously play videos. i did find xplayer though that plays continuously, runs in bkrd, just as i was searching for.

[Q] Proper ROM Installation and Concerns

Hello everybody, I am a proud Nexus 4 user and android user since February of 2013. I'm currently contemplating the use of custom ROMs and have decided on MIUI because it has amazing aesthetics and it really seems like a good ROM for me to use. I have several questions concerning using custom ROMs however:
1. I currently have root access on 4.2.2 and CWM Touch Recovery on my Nexus 4. How should I go about keeping my apps, contacts, information, etc., on my phone, but installing the new custom ROM? Is this even possible/ recommended?
2. I have many apps I rely on through my everyday uses of my phone, and I'm wondering if normal play store APK files will still be able to be used and installed on custom ROMs such as MIUI.
3. Are there any other small things I should note when installing custom ROMs?
4. Will I lose all my data if I install a custom ROM?
5. Is MIUI v5 recommended?
Thank you in advance.

1. Contacts -> Sync to google. Apps -> Helium / Titanium Backup.
Factory reset is recommended for switching ROM base. For same ROM base is generally not required unless you're told. Always make backups. Bootloop? Factory reset, restore afterwards.
2. Some apps may not working 100%, FC, etc.
3. Remember to install gapps?
4. Flashing the custom ROM will NOT wipe your app/data, but if factory reset is required, you would lose apps and data. However /sdcard will remain. Backup, backup, backup.
5. Nice UI, very iPhone-ish, may lag heavily sometimes, all operations just feel slower, some apps may not be working 100%.

Thank you very much for the quick response, this information has helped me greatly!
1-to save your info you can use titanium backup from the play store i dont have it myself so check out exactly what it backs up as for contacts those should be tied to your gmail account so no need to back those up also the internal storage is not wiped so you wouldn't need to backup pics/music but you can if you want to be safe
2- when i used miui i never had any issues using play store apks
3-as always have a backup also i dont know if this was just me but miui has a different file structure so not all of my pics in the albums app were showing up also my music was not showing as well
4- depends on what data you mean any installed apps will be erased but pics and music will still be there
5- I am personally more of a stock/ cym guy myself but if you like miui then by all means use it that's the fun of having a rooted device experiment!
Speaking of MIUI, if you just want to find out, or for fun, you can try my suggestion below:
1. Backup all user apps in Helium / Titanium Backup. Boot into recovery.
2. Do a Nandroid backup in CWM. ( This is important! )
3. Factory reset in CWM, flash MIUI and included gapps, fixes, mod, and whatever.
4. Reboot into MIUI, install Helium / Titanium Backup from Play store, restore your user apps.
Try it for a few days.
Like it? Keep it.
Don't like it? Restore Nandroid backup made earlier in CWM
@truth1675 hmm it seems like titanium backup is surely the way to go, I'll figure myself out through the app then! Thanks for the suggestion!
I think I have read somewhere about media such as music and pictures needing some mod to properly be displayed.
@ksilver89 ooh that looks like a very safe way to go! Thanks I'll surely follow it when I flash MIUI. I recently discovered how amazing nandroid recoveries are, they restore everything to what they used to be, it's awesome

Apps Thinking I have an SD Card & not working

Hi, I recently was on paranoid android and was getting ready to sell my galaxy s4 I9505 so restored a back up I made of the stock rom which was what came on the phone when I bought it.
I restored the back up, but once the phone had booted it was really slow and I kept getting loads of error messages saying different processes had kept failing. The same as in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...restoring-stock-rom-cwm-t2882455#post55566370
I then booted back into recovery and wiped data and dalvik cache, which after rebooting sorted the problem. The device was running smoothly and so I went on downloading my apps from the play store.
But I've since noticed apps like swift key, instagram, whatsapp and snap chat seem to be having issues. I don't have any SD card installed just the phones internal memory, which I have ample space (9GB) but whatsapp won't let me download images.
Snapchat says I need to install an sd before viewing video and Instgram mentions I need an SD before being able to take a picture.
Also the language pack for Swiftkey won't download and when I try and download a theme it says it can't save it.
So it seems there's something wrong with the way it's trying to store certain files. Has anyone else come across this yet?
I'm planning on following the whole unroot process anyway documented here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477 which I'm hoping will fix it.
But I wondered if anyone knew what it is that's caused it?

Did you install the stock rom before or have you just restored your old backup?
If I were you, I would clean everything, install the stock sammy firmware (with latest base) and after that restore your backup

No it's not a rom, I just restored my old back up of my OS before I started flashing any custom roms.
I did a factory reset on the phone hoping it might resolve it. Which hasn't, but I'm not sure now if it's got rid of CWM. Would as I can't seem to get it to boot into recovery (it maybe just me not releasing the volume up button at the right time).
Think I'm going to have to flash a clean stock firmware following the unroot process and hope that fixes it.

Restore apps previously installed from GPlay after factory reset or flashing custROM

Hi, first of all: i'm kind of a flashaholic.
Depending on certain ROMs, custom, on first boot, google is proposing me to restore my apps from my previous devices. But NOT for all custom ROMs.
Does anyone know what it depends off? Is it related to the ROM? To the gapps? To the the device ID? To first time init? to the Backup transport?
Restoring apps is very important to my coz I bought many apps and I can't re-install them one by one.
I've searched in the treads about restoring/backing-up, I google it, but didn't find anything.
The backing-up is active in the Settings menu. I'm not interested in using TiBck, since I'm using it ONLY for restoring data (migrating apps from ROM to ROM, with TiBckup is dangerous/buggy).
Do you have some information about that? what are the solutions? Can I force, on the first boot, or even after, the ROM to reinstall/restore apps previously installed?
Hope I was clear enough.
Thanks and
Best regards.
Hi,
1. It depends on what firmware and device model you have. Apps that designed for TW won't be listed on list of apps to be imported/restored if you installed CyanogenMod. Same thing will happen on apps that designed for CyanogenMod if you installed TW.
2. Unfortunately, AFAIK, you can't. You need some third party apps like Titanium Backup (are you mention it as TiBckup?), or backup feature of Clean Master and ES File Explorer (requires root and only main apk will be copied). If you want to restore apps will all data from previous ROM, the only way is to use Titanium Backup. You can also just format /system, but it's far way not recommended as it would cause more problems.
PS Edit: If you've installed some paid apps, the best way is to re-download them as they will detect your device ID and found it was mismatch, then will immediately block access unless the apps are reinstalled with the same Google Account as you bought these apps.
Sent from my GT-I9500
I was not talking about third part apps (yes TiBckup stands for Titanium Backup), but of Google's function when you first boot after a flash or after a factory reset.
Well, it depends on the android version only, the model does not matter (it is not HW related). It already happened to my to have the option reinstall apps from AOSP (Resurrection ROM) on a new, fresh and clean TW FW (Imperium); and vice versa.
I know there is always the option to manually install apps from Gplay, but it is not what I want, neither the option I'm looking for.
If I flash Resurrection ROM v5.6.2, on Lollipop 5.1.1, then there is the option to restore the apps from previous phones
If I flash Resurrection ROM v6.0.1, on MM, there is not such option/pop-up/choice...
Still thanks for your replay.

Rooted s8 problem.

Okay i have rooted s8 and running costum rom but i have problems with google apps. If i try to download something from playstore i get different errors like (490,491,403,505 and more) when im using chrome i get ssl errors. And other google apps like youtube is giving me network errors all the time.
Things i have tried : cleaning Google Play services Cache, removing and re-adding google accounts. deleting hosts. file with root explorer. Cleaning cache in twrp. Re-flashing gapps. Re installing stock rom- with odin and smart switch (but stock rom crashes and reboots all time so im unable to use it) I also have tried all costum roms.

Hard to believe the stock rom keeps on crashing just because you rooted, some samsung apps might not work but that's about it. Which roms did you try? Did you try flashing/wiping through twrp rather than odin?
.
Stock rom keeps crashing and rebooting. i did flash stock rom with odin and i tried smart switch too. i have tried all costum s8 roms and flashed them via twrp, i always did a full wipe. Running renovate ice 2.0 atm but having problems with google apps.
Please i still need help
Not too sure but i think i have some hardware problem, if i try recovery via odin my phone updates to 32% and then says erasing... and then it boots but everything crashes. Im able to use costum roms but i still get some crashes and google apps are not working well.

[HELP] i think i've encountered a new bug.

hello, i have a new problem found few days ago and been trying to fix it but to no avail.
here is how it started.
i tried to install an app called fsecure vpn network from google play. then the phone when into a bootloop. then i did a clean wipe (reset, wipe cache and dalvik from recovery) but somehow my files were not gone. that is some kinda miracle i have no idea how it happened.
since then my phone have issue whenever i installed mihome:
-. google play services, trebuchet, package installer, and some other has stopped.
-. cannot open apps list in settings when mihome is present. the settings just stopped and crashed.
-. if i try to open the mihome, the phone goes reboot.
-. even uninstalling mihome from application list is not working, the package installer stopped. have to uninstall from google play.
-. i tried to make a bluetooth printer app, but when i put the app-debug.apk into my phone. file manager would crash whenever it tried to read the file. even by just scrolling down. example: file manager work fine if the file is not copied inside (meaning we can scroll around and not crash). but once the file is copied in then the file manager will work if we dont scroll down to find the file, but when we scrolled down to find the file then the app crash.
things i've tried:
-. clean wipe then reflashing rom and gapps.
-. manually update google play store, download google package installer and reinstall it.
-. tried to download google play services apk but was unable to install it.
-. tried the idea of clearing cache of google play service but still no luck (force stop was disabled anyway so i cant try that)
i have no idea how this all happen just because i tried to install that fsecure app. its not even fully installed yet. it was just starting to install after download then this hell happened.
im desperate for some help as i've tried for 3 days in fixing it but to no luck. any helps would be very appreciated.
thanks and regards,

Hello,
Did you try to reinstall Stock ROM ?
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-grand2/SM-G7102/
It happened to me that sometimes, apps or rom just run into a bug and maybe it corrupt the firmware but after a Stock ROM flash (via Odin) + custom recovery (via Odin) to wipe Cache + Data, everything was fix.
Hai, could u possible post me a tutorial on how to do those thing via odin? Coz i usually only do it via cwm. Thanks

Did you try to flash a recovery only ?
Maybe your firmware/system is not corrupted and then you could just reflash a clean rom ?
In Odin, Select AP and load your recovery.tar
I am having the very same issue. The difference is that it's happening with Spotify, Xposed and Relay for Reddit. So yeah it's been much worse for me. I will try to flash stock rom + reinstall another recovery and see if it fixes. By the way, I got a couple of questions:
1 - Does the country that I select when downloading the stock ROM matters?
2 - Which Recovery can you guys recommend? There's a bunch here but not sure if all them are worthy
Okay so I flashed an Indian stock ROM (I'm not indian nor live in the country), then I wiped all data, so I could boot. This is the default procedure to revert back to a Stock ROM.
After that, I noticed the Wifi wasn't working, probably due to the Stock rom I've downloaded. Anyway, I installed a custom Recovery (even an updated version of what I used before, then I reinstalled Ressurection Remix, and tried again.
....It didn't work. Relay for Reddit crashes everything, Spotify puts my phone into a bootloot. Same with Xposed. I have no idea what to do anymore. Someone, please help. I really can't afford to buy another phone right now and I really need those apps. Expecially Spotify.

Okay, so I guess there won't be any need for that. I've redownloaded the stock ROM, but this time, I checked my phone Serial Number so I could download the right stock ROM for my phone. Now everything seems to be working again. Spotify and Relay installed without any issue. I will now try to reflash recovery and then another ROM and see if the problem persists.
For those who don't know how to check your Serial number, it's right above your android version, at the "About phone" section on Settings.
I still need advice on which Recovery I should use.
Anyway, thank you guys. I probably would't be able to solve this without your help.
UPDATE: I've installed TWRP 3.1.0.0, and also rooted the phone using it. Still on stock ROM. Everything seems to be still working without problems. I think I'll stick with it for now. Maybe later I'll try to lash a Custom ROM and see if it still works.

Hi,
I'm glad you fixed you're problem. Sticking on Stock ROM is the best thing you can do if you need your phone as every functionnality is checked and working.
I personnaly use TWRP as recovery, its good you got usb, root and everything you need to backup/restore your phone + reset your phone.
