Encryption and root/twrp or just on stock SM-P580 - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Is it Possible to have root and encryption at the same time on the Galaxy Tab A (SM-P580) If not is there a way to go back to stock. Also will I be able to root again if I update to stock 7.0. I would really Like to keep encryption if at all possible. I am already rooted with twrp.

If you encrypt you have no way of backing up and restoring your data. The one thing that most value.
If you do somehow end up in a no boot situation you'll have no backup to restore and will have to start afresh.

Ah ok. I see. I usually have a back up of all my important stuff backed up on my PC and starting over isn't a big deal. I just like to have root and encryption at the same time. Starting the whole process over doesn't bother me. After a few times ya get use to the process. That is all I am looking for, root and encryption.

[Q] Unroot method for Fascinate

Has anyone come up with an unroot method for the fascinate. I just got one and it really sucks out of the box. I was going to play around with rooting it and see if I can make it fully functional again but I might end up just returning it and getting an incredible. Before rooting it I want to make sure I can go back to stock so it can be returned.

I'm coming from an Incredible and it is true that there is not as much hacks on the Fascinate yet, but there is a lot of activity already:
We have a way to backup and restore:
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
The Fascinate has been rooted (the first day mind you):
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
There is the usual Galaxy S lag fix:
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779597
List of crap apps to remove safely:
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779948
And the very first custom-ish ROM:
h**p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782250
So plenty of action for the first week, I'm sure by the end of the month we will be eating Vanilla Froyo, the best flavor !
Am I wrong for thinking that Unroot = undoing the lag fix, and then just doing a system wipe from the privacy settings?
When I have done this, I have had to re-root the phone each time. So I'm thinking yes.

You don't even need to do the system wipe, you can just remove the files you copied over initially. The root process is minimally invasive.
Always undo the lag-fix first.
If a system wipe is easier for you, then un-do the lag fix and wipe the system.

Lol. easy.
Now for a custom recovery. I need nandroid damnit.
Would wiping the phone work if I deleted instead of renaming some of the files on the phone? I deleted a bunch of the bloatware, and hoping that wiping the phone would just undo the root. I didn't do the lag fix. Just the root process and removed applications.

Here's my rooting instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798064
Yes, it can be unrooted. Do everything in the instructions and it is a much better phone.
EDIT: I also just added a guide to get back to stock.

[Q] Backup to Unroot??

Hi Guys,
I want to root my phone, but OTA creates issues sometimes. Is it possible to backup the rom before rooting the device?
Also, will restoring the image back unroot the phone again, if I need to go that route?
Thanks,
I guess you could do that but Odin works better / faster.
Always make a backup before you try it though.
After reading the posts here, I realized that I'm among those few stuck with a locked boot loader. So, I used safestrap........thanks for the suggestion.

Backup & restore of Nexus Imprint data

Is there a way to backup & restore Nexus Imprint data on the same device?
I've read couple of threads saying that you can't restore it on another phone, which makes sense security wise, but what about restoring on the same phone?
For example, I installed Android N beta and then later downgraded to Marshmallow. Since downgrading wipes the phone, I had to setup fingerprints again. Since two different persons are set up on my phone, I don't want to keep asking the other person to record their fingerprints every couple of weeks when I want to upgrade to N again.

No there's no way. In fact, if you fail to disable all lockscreen security prior to making a backup with TWRP you won't be able to unlock the device after restoring that backup.

Even when restoring to same device?
I was thinking more of using Titanum Backup, but I guess no luck there either?

Even when restoring to same device, there's a whole thread dedicated to the subject that's pinned at the top of the general section. Titanium would never be able to back up something like that.

Urgent Ultra power saving issue!

I have disabled the Samsung keyboard...
I use fingerprint for unlocking
Today I used ultra power saving mode, and rebooted my phone.. When it called back on, fingerprint doesn't work first login so you have to type your password, but it seems that my 3rd party keyboard isn't one of the apps allowed, so I cannot unlock my phone!
Trying to turn off ultra power saving mode, or going to settings, requires password!
Any ideas what I can do without wiping the phone?
Not rooted..
Would appreciate any suggestions!
Nice double posting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/urgent-issue-t3373461
As for the issue, why the f*ck would you ever disable Samsung keyboard? It literally doesn't use any battery if you don't have it selected as main keyboard. Looks like you're stuck here if you're without root, next time don't ever disable native keyboards on your phone.
I'm on my wife's phone, edited title and it seems to have reposted...
I have to admit that I don't remember disabling Samsung keyboard, but assumed I must have done since it isn't loading.
Normally I root my phones, and would remove anything I don't use, but not sure with this phone
Anyone with anything helpful?
You have to factory reset. Wipe data and start again. Hook it up to the computer and get everything/anything you can
Sent from my SM-G935T using XDA-Developers mobile app
Damn it, oh well, will teach me to hold out for Android pay instead of rooting
Try using a USB keyboard...:fingers-crossed:

Your issue has nothing to do with either. If USB keyboard isn't an option or didn't work, flash TWRP with ODIN then do a TWRP backup. Factory reset, then you can use some apps to selectively restore desirable data such as SMS/MMS, Telegram, etc., from a TWRP backup file. Can't remember if apps like TWRP manager require root or not for the restore functionality, most likely they do.
Damn that sux
Happened to me. I had to do a full wipe.
I don't know why it happened because i did not disable Sam keyboard although i installed Google keyboard and it was my default one.

I realise that didn't cause the issue, but because I didn't root, I haven't got app backups..
No root does indeed mean no restore through twrp

For future reference, no, ODIN does not require root. To flash TWRP from ODIN, then boot into TWRP to do a backup, does NOT require a root. It requires an unlocked bootloader which 930F has out of factory. Selectively restoring stuff from TWRP , from inside a booted system (not from TWRP) may or may not require root depending on the restore app or the item being restored.

So you can flash TWRP without tripping knox?
No, you're a bridge too far. I didn't say Knox wouldn't get tripped. Go read the TWRP thread.

Yeah if Knox is tripped, would just root.. Only not rooted because of Knox, want to use android pay
Frustrating as only phone I've owned where I don't have root, and lost all data when I reset
This just happens to me... Try to get USB otg and use USB keyboard..... Type your password very fast when loading, before ultra power saving mode launch... It's work!
new member & first comment
i know its a late reply, maybe someone benefit from it.
flash TWRP through ODIN, go to file explorer, /data/system/locksettings.db delete that, /data/system/gatekeeper_password.key, delete that too, reboot and ur done.

Back up help for a newbie

Howdy!
I had my 6T PERFECT, just like I wanted it.....exactly like I wanted it.
I downloaded the latest OOS update, clicked ok when it told me my phone would be unrooted after the update, something that DID NOT happen with my last update. I figured no problem, I will just root the phone after the update.
Well, TWRP recovery is gone. I boot into the Oxygen recovery screen. I have a Titanium backup folder that has a boat load of files I do not know how to use. TWRP still has a folder on my phone with 2 back ups in it.
I did a quick search and checked with google and can't find an answer simple enough for me to use.
How can I do a back up of my phone that will restore it just like it is, without me having to set up all the apps again, and set up my launchpad again like I want it.?
Question 2, how do I use the back up files I already have and will that do what I am wanting to do?
I may be hoping for something that does not exist, but I would like to root my phone, restore a backup, and upon reboot see the exact same phone I am looking at now. I can transfer the back up files to my computer no problem, but I don't know if that will accomplish my goal.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks Striatum, that will help in the future, however, it does not address the questions in my post.

Flash again twrp through fastboot (many guides here and there) flash Magisk and restore your backup, either the twrp ones either titanium backup
Thank you. I will see if I can muddle through either of those.
It looks as though I may have asked the wrong question. Perhaps I should have asked "if my bootloader is already unlocked can I reflash twrp and magisk after an OOS OTA update without wiping my data". I am back up and running with a rooted phone and did not lose any of my data or settings. Thanks for the help.

....I perfectly understood what you wanted to know.
This is basic knowledge, the answer is yes
How can you mess with your /data partition when twrp and Magisk are dealing with /boot partition
Thank you for the clarification.
Basic knowledge for you guys perhaps, but not for a newbie at the stage I am at. Well, where I was before you straightened me out! LOL.
After flashing a custom ROM in TWRP, when I reboot into recovery and click install, all of the directories have turned into folders with names that look like random letters and numbers, and I can no longer read/write from that internal SD card. Anyone know what is going on or have a solution? I don't want to lose my backups or data, that would suck. But if I have to to get my internal storage back, then fine. Thanks in advance if you can help!!!

No need to post your issue in multiple threads...
This has nothing to do with backup it's an encryption hiccup.

That is correct. You can flash both without losing any data. That is exactly what I did......and exactly what I was unsure of.
