[Q] Backup to Unroot?? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi Guys,
I want to root my phone, but OTA creates issues sometimes. Is it possible to backup the rom before rooting the device?
Also, will restoring the image back unroot the phone again, if I need to go that route?
Thanks,

I guess you could do that but Odin works better / faster.
Always make a backup before you try it though.

After reading the posts here, I realized that I'm among those few stuck with a locked boot loader. So, I used safestrap........thanks for the suggestion.

[REQ] Nandroid Restore Zip

I have perm root with S OFF but have come in to quite a problem. I am having problems with the screen flickering on and off and need to exchange the device. The problem is, the nandroid backup that I made is inaccessible, and I have removed most of the stock apps off the phone.
The SD card I created the backup on seems to be corrupt, I cant even get it to mount anymore on my PC. Is there anyone that created a full nandroid back that can point me to the file (be willing to share)?
I have searched everywhere and can't seem to locate one.
Thanks for the help!
why don't you just use the "Downgrade ROM and Radio from OTA to Stock" thread?
Edit: Oh, and this is the wrong place for your thread also. Prob should go in general or Q&A.
The downgrade rom won't work w/ S-Off I don't believe. I would also a appriciate a nand backup, just the system.img if anyone has one to share.

Also, the OTA update will not be received again if you do the downgrade.

Are you asking for a NAND backup of the 2.2.1 stock rom?
If so, I'll see if I can't make one for you tonight when I get home. My work's internet connection is pretty crappy and it would take forever and a day to upload.

Take a look at this thread. It has the link to the official RUU and the install instructions.
This should get you back to stock, although I have not tried it yet. I grabbed it just in case I would need it.

And as mentioned in that thread, nobody who has followed that process has received the OTA update after having reverted back to stock.

unremarked - If you could upload the NAND backup that would be great. Thanks in advance!
As you should know if he's returning his phone he doesn't need to receive the OTA anymore. Just follow that thread. I had a rooted white one restored and took it back to get a black one. That's much easier then trying to use someone else's backup.

He said he was returning the phone, so receiving the OTA is not really necessary.
Those instructions explain how to get it back to stock, as requested.
OEM stock is 2.2. Post first OTA update is 2.2.1
I would not mind getting a hold of that, as it would make it easier to possible get the 2nd OTA (about which I have read nothing about what it does).
Also wondering if anyone has lost root and rerooted after the 2nd update.
So I am absolutely fail.
On my first device, I guess I had just froze the bloatware apps rather than deleted them because they were restored after a factory reset before I returned it to the store.
On this one, I actually deleted the bloatware apps and they are permanently gone, factory reset doesn't bring them back, and I didn't do a Titanium backup until after I had deleted them off. ><

I did the same thing. I hope someone will post the factory rom with all the .apk files that I could install. The only one i've found is the rom without the OTA.
I actually need a 2.2.1 nandroid as well. Could someone please post one?
Here you go guys. Where I failed, another succeeded!

[Q] [HELP] Stuck in bootloop, can't restore backup, but not bricked yet

I'm a noob at rooting and flashing roms, but i was able to root my phone using gfree and installed MIUI as my first rom. Everything went fine until i tried to download astro file manager and my phone crashed. I was able to boot back up just fine, but i decided to try another rom to see if it would be better. Long story short, i got stuck in a bootloop after flashing and can't restore my nandroid backup. I wiped BUT i didn't do a backup because of my problems with MIUI, so i thought my first backup would be good enough, but apparently it wasn't. If someone can PLEASE help a noob out i would greatly appreciate it.
Just so everyone knows, i am willing to lose my root (which is what i am planning on doing if i can fix this) if that is my only option. If someone can just tell me a way to go back to the stock rom that would be great, i find all of this stuff just too overwhelming for me.
If you want to go back to stock, I am attaching a thread for the gingerbread update. You rename the file PD15IMG.zip and reboot into the bootloader and it will ask you if you want to install the update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174344
You shouldnt have to return to stock and lose root. Just get a non corrupted download of a rom. Flash it, set it up to your liking and make a backup or two and you should be okay. This will be harder if you dont have a computer to do the download though.
Thanks i'll try it out see how it goes.
Thanks man it worked great AND i'm on 2.3.4. You totally saved my phone. Rooting is great if you know exactly what you are doing but i don't even know how to flash a radio. Thank You! +1
Glad it worked out for you.

Never underestimate the value of having a couple of different backups to revert to. It may take up extra space on the SD card, but saves lots of time and frustration.

[Q] New Razr M - Rooted, Bootloader Unlocked - Quick question?

Just got my M on wednesday and really like it. Just finished rooting and unlocking bootloader and installed TWRP. Was wondering can I backup my stock rom with TWRP? I know I can do a backup but was just wondering if the stock rom will backup ok. Hope to try different roms or might keep the stock rom on and just get rid of the bloatware.

yes. there is a "backup" option in TWRP - always a great option (but I would recommend to save it to your mnt/external1 directory rather than "internal storage", as space is a premium on this device.
however, if you are just backing up the system without any of your edits, I think this is really a moot point since the system has it's own backup file saved whenever you do a hard reset.

[Q] Galaxy s4 Rooted and Custom Rom Problems

I have a Canadian S4 and rooted using the twrp method and then installed the vigin google play edition rom. Everything worked fine at first when I installed it but i was fiddling around after in twrp and thought i should format the internal storage and start completely fresh and now if I install any rom including my original backup the device will boot up into the system fine for the first time but if the device resets after that it just hangs on the galaxy S4 logo and i have to reboot into recovery and flash again. Any ideas on how i could fix this? Thanks!!!
Try this, in twrp go into advanced wipe and wipe dalvik cache, cache, system, data and android secure. Then flash your nandroid.
I don't have a nandroid I have a twrp backup

That is a nandroid.
Dont use TWRP for the S4
From what I have experience and I believe others have as well, if you used TWRP to format where you had to type yes, you are pretty much screwed trying to get things working properly again. Maybe it is certain phones, sd cards, roms, who knows, but after I typed yes in TWRP to format everything, I could flash a rom but couldnt restart and things were buggy. I had to use odin to flash back to stock, re-root and flash the rom again. Now everything is 190% considering my battery life went from 6 hours to 28 with medium usage.
I have always loved TWRP on my other phones, but for the S4, its more frustration and using with caution than its worth.
Another word of caution, use windows to fix your phone. Im on linux and its too much of a pain in the ass to use odin/heimdall to go back to stock for newbs. On windows I went to stock and rooted again in no time.
Good luck!

After doing that stuff in twrp should I flash right back to my backup of stock touch wiz or straight into the ROM of my choosing? Whenever I would have to reflash I would have to format he internal memory or it wouldn't work
Ya I did the thing where I typed yes... Crap ya its my first time doing all this stuff so you suggest I Re do all of the rooting stuff and then flash my backup I made?

You might have to. I had the same problem today where if the phone rebooted I would just get a black screen. I ended up using Odin with the stock rom, reinstalling twrp and then restoring my backup. I'm pretty sure it was a rom I flashed that caused the initial problem and only Odin would clear things up.
Start Over

Actually its going back to stock, then rerooting. All I did was follow androidrootz guide here:
http://www.androidrootz.com/2013/06/how-to-unroot-unbrick-galaxy-s4.html
After that, motochopper back to get root and followed this guide to install OUDHS recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291956
This worked for me, at least for now. Hope it can help you out.

A couple other notes, to avoid other possible problems, use the original samsung cord when connecting to your computer. Switching USB ports can help if there are transfer or other issues. Its pretty easy and straight forward if everything works out well, but there are so many gawt dayum variables that minor issues can cause problems, though may never manifest.
Hopefully this works and please post some results to help the same in need.

I get firmware from sammobile.com. You have to register but it's free. You'll download a zip. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. Use that in Odin, PDA.

I sadly think you have no other option than to install that backup you have. If you then wish to revert back to stock, follow the sticky guide in the forums

No mate, it has a solution. Just wait for someone more competent than me to come in.
Can you push adb from your computer to your phone?
