Hello,
Few hours ago, I managed to fix the grey "Move to SD" problem in froyo by using the setInstallLocation 2 solution, after doing that, I moved all my applications to the SD card. Then I did a wipe factory reset to my device.
When turning on the phone, the SD card apps were gone, but they are still in my SD card "secure" folder, files with .asec extension.
They don't exist in my phone, but when turning on the usb storage, i can see them in my SD card.
Has this happened to anyone?? ty very much/1
I don't have much experience with this option, but I would say that a wipe is a wipe and the associated file on the sdcard is only a link to the put the application on the sdcard not the full application.
At best it would keep the option when you re-download that application from the market.
If so, where the real application is? what's the point of "moving the SD" if the application is still stored on the phone?
And it can't be a link because of the size of the files, it's really near the size of the application. I'm convinced it is the application, but wondering why I can't use or find them.
it's pissing me off, i had plenty of games and useful apps
yes, the "registry" of installed apps is gone with the wipe, so android does not know how to use those files on the sd card. You will have to nandroid/titanium restore or reinstall.
Aww.. lucky i got the saved games on the sd...
I got an unrelated question:
I found that the apn settings are saved under the file apns-conf.xml.
I downloaded the file with the settings i need, pushed it to system/etc and still i don't get the apn settings. tried rebooting the phone, and wonders why i still don't get the apns?
If you have a backup, restore it, move all your apps back to phone, then wipe, flash the new rom and move them back to SD.
All problems solved, ty
Hello everyone,
I've searched endlessly on this topic with no luck. If there are any posts on XDA that relate to this issue, please do refer me to them.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. A few days ago, I realize that the DCIM folder has disappeared from my gallery. I do not have a micro SD card installed, so the DCIM folder is on the device storage. I've tried using recovery software such as "Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery" and "Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android", but I get loads of connectivity issues. I've tried using them on another S4 where only Jihosoft's worked, yet there are loads of deleted photos that do not appear.
Anyway, I am not asking about how to use such software, I just want to know if there is any efficient and solid way of dealing with this issue. It really bugs me to have valuable photos disappearing in thin air. Please and thanks !

Is the folder present when browsing with a file explorer?
That is basically an essential folder. Even if you delete it, android will create it again. So it doesn't just disappear.
try and do as little as possible that will make the phone write to your internal memory aka downloads (apps should be ok as it's in a different partition). if you do you are possibly overwriting a photo making it impossible to recover. I tried an app called dumpster recycle a few years back, I was impressed at the time at what it could recover...
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baloota.dumpster
Internal storage files can't be recovered due to something called trimming.
I don't know if this has changed with the recent android versions.
never thought about that, yes trim effectively formats deleted files...
I saw a guide on how to do it some time ago, so it is possible. But it seemed like you have to go through a lot of trouble for this.
Hi guys,
First of all, great forum and great place to learn a lot of stuff about ROM's.
I have been using the forums here for a while.
Now I have a problem with my Galaxy S 4.
Galaxy s4 :gt- i9505 (Beglium)
16Gb version
Custom Rom: optimized cm 12.1 -20160118
android 5.1.1
I had some problems playing my music files on the phone, so i connected the phone to my PC.
I deleted my MUSIC folder from my EXTERNAL card.
Then I saw There are a lot more random folders in the ROOT of my EXTERNAL card.
So I deleted the LOG files, some maps that where for AD's (like GO sms), etc.
As far as I know, I did not delete any system files or folders.
While I was in the external card, connected to the PC, I saw that my INTERNAL card had wheeeeyyy much more free space than 5 minutes before. ( normally 0.9Gb free... suddenly 5.72GB free)
So i disconnected the phone and reconnected it again.
Again same thing.
Again disconnected it and on the phone I could not find ANY FILES, NO pictures, No downloads, NOTHING
Basically, my INTERNAL and my EXTERNAL are fully wiped.
with easeUS data recovery I can see all my files and maps on the external, BUT almost all of them are corrupted.
I can not recover them/ preview them.
I have not tried the internal memory yet. It is now doing a DEEP SCAN on the EXTERNAL card, connected to my PC via a SD Card Adapter.
Any possibilities to save something from the external and the internal memory ?
Everything else works normally.
My apps work, my contacts are ok.
PC is set to show hidden and system files => nothing to see
Recycle been on the phone is empty
used some recovery apps from the play store => nothing
Many thanks in advance.
PS: I have already done a search, also on google. But could not find anything useful.
Try Deleter.
I run easeUS recovery all night on the external memory.
Got back 5% of my pictures.
Most ara corrupted.
Same story for the internal memory.
Other suggestions, tips are welcome.
If the data was deleted corrupted then it might be restored corrupted.
I suggest, from now on, to upload your photos Google's servers with the Google Photos app.
You have unlimited storage for photos up to a certain quality.
Yep, i have installed google drive.
Sh#t has happened
Will try to use some other applications for recovery.
Had some pictures i needed.
Any names of really good software to recover sd card of internal memory ?
I told you, if the data was wiped in a corrupted state, then it will be restored in a corrupted stated. Because that's how it was the last time before it was deleted. It's like a checkpoint in a game. If you die, you will revive at the checkpoint in the same state you were when you reached that checkpoint.
You could give Deleter a try. But it won't magically repair corrupted data.
Try a program called recuva: https://www.piriform.com/recuva

I won't recommend it. It failed to recover two videos from my SD card that I needed to recover for investigation purposes, even when status of these files were Excellent. After restored, these files were corrupted. The same thing went on my .OGG file that was deleted accidentally by dBpoweramp before Vorbis Comments ID Tag was applied.
Even my friend said that Recuva was unable to recover her deleted photos as it should be. Yeah, the same thing, corrupted.

I have used recuva many times but, as with any software, it really depends on the state of the data at the time the software is run.
When one is desparate to recover files, I recommend trying as many programs as possible.
Hey guys.
Today i will try many different software.
I am trying to find a way to mount my internal storage as a drive with a driveLetter, so i can scan it.
Now its mte/umte or something like that.
So it has no driveletter.
Hey guys.
I managed to retrieve some pictures from the sd card.
Software i used.
[email protected]
EAsuse
Foenix recovery
For the internal memory.
Digdeeper
And some other ones on play store.
Just search for " photo recovey".
Maybe someone can use the names, if they get in the same situation as me.
Thx for the tips guys!
Hi Everyone,
Back with an android phone after quite a while.
Just added a sd card to my SGS7E and realised I can't do anything with it.
All I want is to be able to use the sd card as you would normally, create and move files, folders etc.
Is this possible without rooting?
If so could someone provide any advice or point me to a relevant resource.
If i need to root what would you good people recommend? I don't want to do anything fancy at the moment (I'm sure that'll change) just use the card as normal storage.
Thank you for your help, advice and time.
The SD issues are my biggest let down. My camera won't save to it... people tell me to factory reset but I don't feel like loosing all my work I put into it.
Other apps see it as having storage in mb I think instead of GB. issues and nobody talks about it
Hi,
The sdcard is working okay for me. If system apps can't read or modify the content inside the sdcard, then reinsert the card or reformat it because it's very likely that the phone isn't seeing it.
If you want user installed apps to access the sdcard, it's a bit more annoying. Open the app that you want to access the card, then try to make a modification in it (like creating a new file if a file manager, saving a picture if a camera, downloading a file if a torrent client, etc), it will say it can't access the sdcard and will ask you to point where to root of the sdcard is, just select your sdcard folder on the prompt and it will work fine.
Keep in mind some stuff like app data can't be moved to the sdcard, so try to keep all media on your sdcard and all apps in your internal memory, that's what I found to be a pretty easy and good memory management. If you want however to install apps on your sdcard, you can enable adoptable storage using a terminal window (formatting your card), or root your device to use some third party app that will do that for you.
All the best,
~Lord

T-Mo S2, took the nougat update, and even using "MyFiles" all attempts to write to the external sdcard fail. I can't even enable permissions for root explorer or es-filemanager pro. I'm frustrated enough to use this tablet as a weapon in a road rage incident. Anyone else seeing this or is there something I've missed along the way?

Don't use supersu 2.82 SR1
I'm not rooted. It's totally stock
Something's not right because I have no problems on my T713. Bone stock. I just finished copying some pix from a USB-OTG to the micro SD. Went without a hitch.

I have difficulty to write on SD card for some of the apps (such as GPS) after update. But, the file explorer and some other apps are ok. I believe the problem is caused by app permissions and needs to be solve as per app level.

It just a permission. It will pop up with permission request then you choose internal or external at root of storage. My can read/write from internal, microsd card, and even 1tb WD hard drive (without power) all no problem.
I'm having the same problem. I was running stock to this happened and have since rooted and tried two, (at the end of the day not very) different ROMs. Resurrection remix and Lineage OS both running nougat and neither have worked. I've tried using adb partition without success and root essentials asks me to flash ASPlugin.zip which I have tried with the flasher and through twrp. Neither works as it asks me to flash it again when I retry root essentials. No errors get thrown while flashing ASPlugin.zip.
I'm also at the point of wanting to throw my tab against the wall.
The permissions window pops up but it does not seem to effect the external SD card.
this link shows how to fix it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJRKuQf0puE
ES File Explorer Pro permits root permission, but it's not very obvious as to how it works. Execute a copy or move, you'll be prompted to go to the root of the card, click on the card link, then bottom right hand corner, click the select button and it's done.
Hi everyone.
I found this thread while searching for an answer to the same problem, which drove me almost crazy, too.
I decided to post my solution here, so that it might help others in the future.
As I said: I had the said problem, too.
No writing to ext. SD card, also no writing to my USB-stick via USB-OTG (On The Go), after updating my Tab S2 (SM-T815) to Nougat (Android 7.0) with a stock ROM and then rooting it with magisk (which btw went surprisingly well!).
I am using FX File Explorer, bought it even to be able to use it as root explorer, imho it's one of the best ones out there.
Connected to my PC I could pull or write files to my internal storage as well as to my external SD card via MTP, though.
Strange, but to those of us with just enough know-how to not brick the phone when flashing "stuff" the higher functions seem to be magical anyway, so I didn't take too much time to wonder.
I tried unmounting and mounting both SD card and USB stick, but that would not help.
Also disabeling writing acces in FX explorer and enabeling it again showe no effect. All I got was an error message "Internal Error".
The post above gave me the hint about permissions. (I couldn't watch the linked Youtube video, because my PC has no speakers atm, and I also had no headphones. Also, it looks like the video solves an intirely different problem anyways, not sure why tensux posted this here!?)
So I checked the permissions by using FX.
I went to /root then checked the permissions for /root/sdcard which were set to rwx, rwx, rwx.
Then I checked the SD card (and the USB, while I was at it anyways) via root/storage/[technical name of my SD card like 5555-2843] and /root/storage/[technical name of my USB-stick like 2234-1289] and found that both had their permissions set to rwx,rx,rx.
I marked the respective folders, went to security through the context menu, and changed the permissions to rwx, rwx, rwx in each of them. It would not stick in the grafics, meaning afterwards the permissions still showed no change, even when I restarted the Tablet, but...
I went back to the regular FX explorer and unmounted and mounted both SD card and USB-stick again. I still got the error message, only this time I tried to copy, move or delete a file there was no problem anymore, neither from or to the SD card nor the USB-stick.
After several restarts I still can write to my SD card as well as to my USB-stick, so I must have done something right.
.
Thank you XDA for being a place of knowledge, maybe I could give back a little and maybe this report helps someone else out there.

All external storage write permissions are granted on a per app basis as per Google's security specs.
If an app has issues with writing to external storage then it is the app at fault.
The developer needs to update the app with the new permissions.
I have many Android devices and for all of these devices I use Root Explorer.
This is and has always been the best Root file explorer since day one. It does what it needs to do without any silly unnecessary bells and whistles.
Any serious developer will use this app as it's proved to be the most reliable and the dev is on the ball with this app.
Never have I had an issue with it.
