I'm hearing a relatively strong hiss on
earbuds when nothing is played,
I think audio quality is good but there's no absolute silence, when it should be,
I'm using some good AKG earbuds so maybe they're too much sensitive
Not expecting an audiophille device but still..
What about your sgs?

Hehe ya that's exactly what I thought... The galaxy s is a good device for music... Also heard the hissing sound but I think that depends on the audio quality of the music track u are listening to... The device s audio quality seems much superior to the ipod touch that I own.. Try listening to a music track converted from a cd or probably a wav file.. There shoukd not be any hissing sound in that.

It should be silent on the GS, it is on mine. What firmware are you on? The earlier ones had a problem with sound output via headphones, but thats been fixed for some time now in later firmwares...
I also find when listening to music not generally aware of this, but when I plug it into a mini jack socket in my car I get a high pitched noise for some reason I cant understand, anyone else get similar?
FWIK, you can't use regular earbuds or mini jack to connect to SGS. The headphone port is wired differently so that a normal earbuds or mini jack connector may not properly connect the ground wire, it connects to the mic-in instead.
There is a dedicated thread talked about this issue specifically.

Strange they put standard headphone port..
I`m using the Ritchofen JM9, with flac files, unfortunately, I hear the hiss even when music player is off..

Standard headphone port contains L and R signal only. Almost all cell phones contain mic-in in the port as well. So, no, it is not a simply standard headphone. From what I understand, only the US version, AT&T Captivate can use normal headphones.

Earbuds work fine with my sgs.
Do your earbuds have an inline mic because I had the same problem with mine. I found if I pressed the button the noise stopped, and when listening to music the it was louder and good quality.
The problem is that the connections on the earbuds are set up for an iphone headset.
You can get adapters to change between iphone headset and other cellphone head set.

I got this phone to replace my previous phone mainly because of the Bluetooth audio. I use it in my car a lot. Now I'm using the nexus and I have to say the quality is worse than anything. If it's plugged in with aux, it's fine. But Bluetooth audio is completely crap. Do you guys know if this can be a software fix?
IMHO bluetooth is designed for convenience not quality. I use BT for car all the time but my speakers are even crappier so no difference. If you care go for wires. I saw the review on gsmarena for the audio of N4 quite positive.

Speakers cracking. I thought it was my speakers but then I plugged in the aux and it was perfect. I used gnex, 2 phones ago for audio streaming music and it was fine. But this is just crazy terrible. Night and day. The crackling is extremely noticeable
I notice the crackling in my car too. Its mild but annoying enough for me to switch to aux input. I think that Cyanogenmod uses a different set of BT drivers so it might be worth a flash.

If you have sizzling in your bluetooth audio I would look to ground loop issues. Perhaps an audio transformer between the bt audio out and your stereo.
No issues with bluetooth over here. Sounds fine for me.
Bluetooth audio sounds better than my Gnex did. Using AOKP 12/05 build. I do wish there was AVRCP 1.3 support, but that seems to be missing from 4.2 roms so that's not so much a device specific issue.
A2DP is a ****ty spec from a quality standpoint. It uses lossy encoding and was designed to have low overhead while sounding acceptable. It's not going to be stellar on any device.
no its completely noticeable for me. bluetooth audio streaming is way substandard on this phone. im really hoping its a software issue cuz bt 4.0 was very attractive. cm is known for good bt audio? or would all the custom roms probably fix this?
Donavo, there is a known issue with Bluetooth on Android 4.2.
Actually three issues that people are having. First are connection issues, second is audio drops and the third is the audio quality {the crackling that you are hearing).
The issue apparently is caused by a rewrite of the Bluetooth stack by Google for v4.2.
Both my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 have the cracking issues after upgrading to 4.2. It's less noticeable on low quality source material like podcasts but very noticeable on high quality material.
No connection, drop issues with the GNex but I have drop issues on the N7.
You'll have to use the headphone jack until a fix is released. If there's a custom rom that's not using the new Bluetooth stack then that would fix the issue as well.
Here's the bug report if you want to track it.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632
EDIT: It may not have been a rewrite but they may be using a new stack from Broadcom.

I have the bluetooth audio quality problem too. Just got a Nexus 4, upgrading from a Hercules (Tmo SG2). On the previous phone, sound quality was excellent and you would never know audio was streaming from the phone. With the Nexus 4, the sound is harsh and distorts on the high frequencies, resulting in a static sound on things like cymbals and such. Also, the phone audio streaming over bluetooth is harsh. It's almost as if the person on the end was talking through a megaphone.
I did notice that while in a phone call, the volume was much louder to my receiver than my previous phone. Perhaps the problem is that the bluetooth audio's volume is being sent too high?
I hope Google fixes this soon, along with the broken AVRCP profile (I no longer get song meta data streaming to the receiver).

It's not broken, it just hasn't been implemented. I believe stock Android just has AVRCP 1.0 which is control only. I think you need v1.3 to get titles to show. I don't believe any of the Nexus phones have AVRCP v1.3 which is a shame. Until Google puts it in I think you need to go with a custom rom to get AVRCP v1.3. Maybe do a quick search to see which do. I'm using stock so I don't know which ones support it.

Wow, I didn't know this. Being stuck at 1.0 is ridiculous. Maybe (hopefully) with the Bluetooth framework change they'll finally get around to adding 1.3 (or hell maybe 1.4!) support.
I'm using a crappy, $13 dealextreme bluetooth receiver (SKU: 120198). The audio quality is obviously not as good as with the aux input, but I think it's rather good. I can say for sure that it sounds considerably better than my GNex did on the same receiver. It does occasionally have connection problems, though I'm not sure if that's a problem with the phone or a side-effect of buying a $12 receiver, lol.
just posted a similar question in the evo 3d forums, part still waiting for my N4, but my evo sound quality over bluetooth is poor too, and I can hear the compression! its worse on high quality music like flac files. I think it is a general limitation of bluetooth audio streaming

Yeah this sux bad....i noticed the audio quality instantly after syncing my Nexus 4 to my car. I was as if you took a 320kbps MP3 and compressed it to 64kbps. I flashed back to stock in hopes of fixing it but no dice. I cant wait for a Fix

I donot know if it is something wrong with the galaxy lineup or maybe android but I am having poor music quality on my phones I had a galaxy s3 and now a galaxy note 3 .Tried nearly every player poweramp, winamp, player pro and even rooted the s3 to try viper4android but the music always sucks either too flat or too noisy .should I try a sony device or the music on android isnot rich and crips (os problem).
I tried the new Adapt sound in note 3 with the default player and nothing new.
I use the bundled samsung headsets (tell me if I should replace them).
Thanks in advance ☺.
Are u talking about the sound with or without headphones?
Anyway I think the sound is one of the best u can find on any cell phone, there are just a few better (htc m8 4 example). If u are talking headphones I would personally advice anyone to switch away from in ear headphones (sound always bad to me) and take some real headphones instead. Hope that helps in any way

Bundled headphones are rather poor/flat for music - I still use those sometimes as a headset since the controls and mic work (while other models of headsets do not) but for music I use separate headphones.
I use the earpiece from my HTC one and it sounds nice.
Only caveat is the music player of touchwiz is slow and dumb.

You also may opt for a ROM with Viper Audio, but seriously you need better headphones first.
As others have said I would agree
1) Standard in ear headphones are not very good quality with any phone.
2) Android doesn't seem to be oriented towards prioritising high quality audio.
Having said that there are a number of steps that are likely to improve audio quality depending on how important and how much money you're willing to spend.
My advice would be first get a decent over the ear quality headphone.
Then get your music in lossless format e.g flac files not low bit rate mp3.
My personal favourite music player is Neutronmp.
Then if you still want more and are willing to spend more then the advice to head over to headfi given earlier is going to lead to an excellent source of advice.
Likely advice, again referred to earlier would involve investing in a separate dac / headphone amp.
Many available at different prices, I use Fiio E17 via usb otg cable and usb audio player Pro

Hello Sony fans!
Below is the workaround for the low headphones volume caused by Xperia’s notorious low jack voltage output. This solution will also allow you to use the headphones that previously worked with Xperia’s but stopped working on XZ Premium or iPhone headphones.
This is a UK centric guide but will also work if you can get hold of the HTC adapter in your country. Other adapters might also work but this one has confirmed high quality DAC and has been tested by myself.
Unfortunately this fix will cost you some money albeit very little (£5.95). Another downside is that you’ll have to use USB-C dongle instead of jack output for audio so you won’t be able to charge the phone and listen to music at the same time.
Step 1: Sign up to HTC Club which will give you a 35% discount
www.htc.com/uk/newsletter/
Step 2: Purchase USB-C to audio jack dongle
http://www.htc.com/uk/accessories/usb-c-digital-to-3-5mm/#!pid=htc-u11
Step 3: Give Sony a disapproving look for including low quality amp in their Premium £600 phone causing low voltage jack output. Then enjoy better quality sound and massively increased volume!
As mentioned earlier, by using the dongle you’ll also be able to use your headphones that stopped working on XZ Premium (i.e. Bose iPhone earbuds).
Let me know if that works for you and enjoy better quality and louder audio!

Hello,
I find headphones dongle with my earphones quite lacking quality/soundstage, but searching through forums I stumbled upon this: Viper detects our essential dongle as a speaker. Was it fixed, or do you have any suggestions how to improve sound quality?
I'm using AuriSonics ASG 1Plus, which are an excellent IEM's, with low Impedence:
(11 ohm +/ 10% @ 1kHz16 ; Sensitivity: [email protected]).
So there should be no problem powering 'em and dishing as good sound performance as possible.
I know essential uses Cirrus DAC (which is average, but I'm not really buying any high-quality USB-c DAC or portable AMP).
I come from Pixel XL, which had dedicated 3.5mm jack and SD DAC, it sounded okay and WAY better than essential.
Some EQ tweaks can elevate a bit of problems, but I'm looking for a more all-around solution (whether it's fixed viper(drivers/libraries/etc.)(( or something else)).
Thanks!
Bump.

I bought the first headphone Z:ero and got them on time.
They worked great.
I bought the DAC while still on pre-order and received it a while ago.
For a small DAC the quality is really good.
The volume buttons make it very usable since you can set the input to the DAC from the phone at an optimal level then use the volume buttons on the DAC for the input of the car stereo, headphones, etc.
I'm quite happy and it's much better than the little dongle that comes with the phone.
Is it Focusrite or Apogee? No, but it's not $2K either.
I found the same issue. I don't think it is the DAC, but instead the native Android USB/DAC driver.

I just purchased a pixel audio adapter, as it measures well for its price ($9).
The market for high-end usbc adapters isn't quite there yet it seems, a traditional dac+amp setup is probably still better if you need more power.
If you're using IEMs though, powerful amps tend to have a higher noise floor.
Just tested Neutron player, it's excellent.
Huge increase in soundstage, overall processing quality, sounds great.
Magic is done under Audio Hardware options, selecting 'Direct USB Driver' to allow direct access to the USB device.

I have that adapter and the Essential adapter. Using Onkyo HF application it was able to use multiple bit rates with the Essential adapter, but the Google adapter only works at 48kHz.
I have the Sabaj Da3 as well. It works great with the Onkyo HF app, it supports multiple sample rates and upconverts to DSD512 as well. Issues are: 1. It's huge. 2: It burns significant battery, especially if upconverting. 3. When I bought it was $90, right now it is $119 on Amazon - so it's expensive!
Honestly, for non-critical on the go listening the Essential adapter works really well once you bypass the Android USB driver.

1. I tried Hiby, and did like its music quality, but its very rough for me.. I could not make/receive voice calls when it locks my headphones.. Also it does not show any info on the actual bitrates its using..
2. I am trying out Neutron trial version, which is a 5 day limited use full feature version. It too seems to be limiting the output to 48kHz. Yet to try Onkyo.

2. I am trying out Neutron trial version, which is a 5 day limited use full feature version. It too seems to be limiting the output to 48kHz. Yet to try Onkyo.

USB Audio Player Pro also seems well regarded and developed. I believe Hiby is a single developer and is much more of a work in progress.
Just found the perfect setup for my IEM's.
Ainur Sauron Magisk module and Neutron player's "direct USB support" option. Sounds amazing now!
Had quite similar experience in the ol' days with Colorfly C3 and Klipsch iem's (can't remember the model).
Or just that I'm easily impressed
Tried viper, just really dislike its signature sound. Clarity, bass, convolver turned on and tuned a bit, still, not to my ears.
