I got this phone to replace my previous phone mainly because of the Bluetooth audio. I use it in my car a lot. Now I'm using the nexus and I have to say the quality is worse than anything. If it's plugged in with aux, it's fine. But Bluetooth audio is completely crap. Do you guys know if this can be a software fix?
IMHO bluetooth is designed for convenience not quality. I use BT for car all the time but my speakers are even crappier so no difference. If you care go for wires. I saw the review on gsmarena for the audio of N4 quite positive.

Speakers cracking. I thought it was my speakers but then I plugged in the aux and it was perfect. I used gnex, 2 phones ago for audio streaming music and it was fine. But this is just crazy terrible. Night and day. The crackling is extremely noticeable
I notice the crackling in my car too. Its mild but annoying enough for me to switch to aux input. I think that Cyanogenmod uses a different set of BT drivers so it might be worth a flash.

If you have sizzling in your bluetooth audio I would look to ground loop issues. Perhaps an audio transformer between the bt audio out and your stereo.
No issues with bluetooth over here. Sounds fine for me.
Bluetooth audio sounds better than my Gnex did. Using AOKP 12/05 build. I do wish there was AVRCP 1.3 support, but that seems to be missing from 4.2 roms so that's not so much a device specific issue.
A2DP is a ****ty spec from a quality standpoint. It uses lossy encoding and was designed to have low overhead while sounding acceptable. It's not going to be stellar on any device.
no its completely noticeable for me. bluetooth audio streaming is way substandard on this phone. im really hoping its a software issue cuz bt 4.0 was very attractive. cm is known for good bt audio? or would all the custom roms probably fix this?
Donavo, there is a known issue with Bluetooth on Android 4.2.
Actually three issues that people are having. First are connection issues, second is audio drops and the third is the audio quality {the crackling that you are hearing).
The issue apparently is caused by a rewrite of the Bluetooth stack by Google for v4.2.
Both my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 have the cracking issues after upgrading to 4.2. It's less noticeable on low quality source material like podcasts but very noticeable on high quality material.
No connection, drop issues with the GNex but I have drop issues on the N7.
You'll have to use the headphone jack until a fix is released. If there's a custom rom that's not using the new Bluetooth stack then that would fix the issue as well.
Here's the bug report if you want to track it.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632
EDIT: It may not have been a rewrite but they may be using a new stack from Broadcom.

Oh man thank you what a relief. This answers my exact question. Thanks again.
Bluetooth audio quality fine on mine. Using Sony mw600.

I have the bluetooth audio quality problem too. Just got a Nexus 4, upgrading from a Hercules (Tmo SG2). On the previous phone, sound quality was excellent and you would never know audio was streaming from the phone. With the Nexus 4, the sound is harsh and distorts on the high frequencies, resulting in a static sound on things like cymbals and such. Also, the phone audio streaming over bluetooth is harsh. It's almost as if the person on the end was talking through a megaphone.
I did notice that while in a phone call, the volume was much louder to my receiver than my previous phone. Perhaps the problem is that the bluetooth audio's volume is being sent too high?
I hope Google fixes this soon, along with the broken AVRCP profile (I no longer get song meta data streaming to the receiver).

It's not broken, it just hasn't been implemented. I believe stock Android just has AVRCP 1.0 which is control only. I think you need v1.3 to get titles to show. I don't believe any of the Nexus phones have AVRCP v1.3 which is a shame. Until Google puts it in I think you need to go with a custom rom to get AVRCP v1.3. Maybe do a quick search to see which do. I'm using stock so I don't know which ones support it.

Wow, I didn't know this. Being stuck at 1.0 is ridiculous. Maybe (hopefully) with the Bluetooth framework change they'll finally get around to adding 1.3 (or hell maybe 1.4!) support.
I'm using a crappy, $13 dealextreme bluetooth receiver (SKU: 120198). The audio quality is obviously not as good as with the aux input, but I think it's rather good. I can say for sure that it sounds considerably better than my GNex did on the same receiver. It does occasionally have connection problems, though I'm not sure if that's a problem with the phone or a side-effect of buying a $12 receiver, lol.
just posted a similar question in the evo 3d forums, part still waiting for my N4, but my evo sound quality over bluetooth is poor too, and I can hear the compression! its worse on high quality music like flac files. I think it is a general limitation of bluetooth audio streaming

Anyone know of any ROMs with AVRCP 1.3 or 1.4?
Yeah this sux bad....i noticed the audio quality instantly after syncing my Nexus 4 to my car. I was as if you took a 320kbps MP3 and compressed it to 64kbps. I flashed back to stock in hopes of fixing it but no dice. I cant wait for a Fix
This is the only thing that makes me miss my Galaxy Nexus (4.1.2)

Does anybody have same problem like mine? Base sounds crackling.

no problems so far
I've got a Sony xplod in me car... sound quality isnt very good through the Galaxy S. I prefer my touch hd... Only because the sample rate and and bitpool have been increased.

Anyone know how to bump up the bit rate and samples pool on android? Never heard complaints like this about other droids...will certainly look into it.

I am using an Evo 4g, bitpool is fixed at 32 using various bluetooth devices including the mw600. I have searched for a couple of weeks and have yet to find a way to bump this up. The sound is ok but not as good as my windows mobile devices with the registry edits.
I'm not sure exactly what Bluetooth chip is in the tablet but it's way superior than my HTC Inspire 4G's BT. I recently bought the Sennheiser MM550 which is one of the best BT stereo headphones out there. The Sennheiser website says you need apt-X codec support to fully enjoy audiophile-grade lossless sound wirelessly. Though I don't know what's in the Gtab 10.1 since the Samsung website only says BT 2.1 EDR, I can say the sound is amazing compare to what gets outputted from my HTC phone with the same song. The HTC phone also gives a little hiss and clicks here and there but the Gtab 10.1 is just flawless even at 30 feet out. Funny thing for lower end BT stereo headphones the HTC phone is fine. I have tried few others like the Sennheiser MM 200, motorola S9 and few Sonys. They all sound the same through both HTC phone or the Gtab 10.1.
I'm not too experienced on the Apt-X codec thing. Maybe someone with more knowledge in this area can comment on it, but now I'm re-encoding all my songs in 320kb or AAC just to fully enjoy the music. Awesomeness!!!

A2DP is done in the software BT stack (bluez), not in the BT chipset's firmware. Last I checked, bluez doesn't support apt-X, though I suppose it's possible that Samsung added that as a proprietary feature.
Haven't tried BT anything with mine. I would love to find a pair of stereo BT earbuds that are as comfortable as the wired Sennheisers I use with my phone. I can sleep with those in (fall asleep listening to podcasts via Google Listen) but it would be awesome not to have the frigging phone (or iPod) in bed with me.

Buy one of the many Bluetooth units that let you use your own 3.5mm headphones and jack the Sennheisers into that. The "dongles" run pretty small too these days, and are good for 6-8 hours on a charge.

I suggest this pretty little wonder: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Ericsson...1DCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313509936&sr=8-1
Strong points compared to my Jabra BT3030 (The Dog Tag one):
1. Longer battery life, significantly.. My MW600 can last the whole day (morning, afternoon and night!) but my Jabra's dead by 6pm, just before nightfall
2. Louder output. The Jabra is significantly softer compared to the MW600. I tried listening through the 3.5mm jack and compared it with listening through the Jabra and I can say the Jabra is quieter. The MW600 sounds roughly as loud as when wired to the 3.5mm directly
3. Can remember up to 3 devices. I saved my Laptop, my Asus transformer, and my Bluetooth transmitter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PU9U0E/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_6). I use the bluetooth transmitter when i want to listen from any music player with a 3.5mm output jack. The Jabra can only remember 1 device so it's a hassle switching audio sources.
4. Can pair media audio and phone audio to separate devices. This means that i can listen to music on my Asus transformer (connected via media) and still receive calls from my Galaxy S (connected via phone) all from one headset. I don't know how to achieve this on the Jabra.
5. MW600 has FM built in. IDK though if you'd want that.

Man, I was looking for some good BT headphones & I looked into how much your HF cost & $400s. Wow! Can you recommend a cheap HF? Tops 200s & is it really worth the price? I don't have an ear for audio so I'm not sure, a top of the line HF will benefit me or not.

Depends on how much you want to spend. If you want the top of the line bluetooth, you are best bet is Sennheiser. You can also get the PX 360 BT which is the same as the MM 550 I have except without active noise cancelling (ANC) and microphone for calls. If you want ANC without calling feature, you can get PXC 360 BT. The former ones are circumaural meaning covers your ears. If you want smaller over the ear, AKA supraaural, you can get MM 400, PXC 310 BT, or MM 450. Differences is BT, BT+ANC, BT+ANC+Calling. You can get these on Ebay for cheap. I tried out the MM 550 at Apple store and bought a 2 month old pair from Ebay for 280.
Another great choice is Nokia BH-905i which is about $170 on Amazon, it has BT, ANC, and calling features. I almost got it except it's silver ear mugs are too overthetop for me.
Sony DRBT50 is also circumaural with great reviews. I almost got it except I really wanted top of the line with ANC.
If you want decent quality, not audiophile quality, go with any of the Sony Bluetooth earbuds. They are all great. I have tried 3 of them. It's nice to hide your headphones in your short with Sony's form factor.
Always check out Ebay for great deals .

This is actually a long story but in short
The Galaxy S II uses Yamaha audio hardware. The Galaxy S II's predecessor, the original Galaxy S, used Wolfson's WM8994 DAC.
Galaxy SI has wolfson codec , which was open source.
Supercurio a well known developer and audio expert here in XDA was able to create good sound output using his voodoo app.
In galaxy SII samsung replaced wolfson with yamaha and this was closed source.
The sound quality for audiophiles using galaxy sII was terrible. ( not to my ears as I am a certified non-audiophile )
Being closed source no further development was possible.
IN the words of supercurio "
DAC Distortion
With today’s Android audio implementation, all kind of media are sent to the DAC as a 44100 / 16bit / Stereo stream. Despite the usage of a fixed rate, Yamaha’s codec is not able to provide a very clean output.
Galaxy S II DAC output quality is limited by several kind of distortions. So far, no firmware was able to fix those despite early Korean updates describing “audio clarity improvements”.
When playing music, those artifacts are perceived as “lack of clarity”, “reduction of stereo separation”, “loss of detail” and “lifeless sound” (opposite of lively)."
The good news is that with new firmware releases many people have said that the sound quality of Galaxy SII is much better. So i guess its going to be better in GNote.
However we wont get Voodoo sounds improvements.

Isn't there a chance that the kernel/software might be slightly different and will fix the issue?
Besides I've got my hand on for few minutes and I didn't pickup anything being wrong with the sound quality. However I didn't have a chance to plug in my headphones so I might be wrong.
Fast answer
yamaha dac is pure crap if you listen music in headphones over 10€
GS2 + note = yamaha dac, so if you want to listen music with a little quality you need a dedicated mp3, the phone will not be suitable for that.

Lol, there are no facts, only interpretations. BTW Yamaha produces great electric pianos. Don't see how this is relevant but lol, maybe it helps to restore your hardware
For me the included white head set is worse than the SGS2 one (less bass) but when comparing with the SGS2 headset the sound of the Note seems better as the SGS2.
Especially the noise when scrolling lists and so on is gone for me. In combination with Poweramp as player I'm quite satisfied with the sound.

No need to fix if the sound is OK. Improvement/fix comes to something that is not good enough.
They're not that bad despite the dramatic title that this thread has
You do however need to pair it up with a good earbud/iem to get a lot out of it.

um good pair of full size will make a difference in just about any mobile device. Even a voodoo'd SGS1 won't be able to drive a quality set of cans like akg701/702 or hd800
Sound on video record is better than sgs2. A big point.
A bit unrelated but I'd like to see integrated stereo speakers on such phones.
I remember some Nokia that had a quite great set of speakers turning them into a decent mini jukebox.
Use this size more Samsung!
For those non satisfied with the Yamaha DAC, why not investing in a high end Bluetooth headphone ?
Here you would not pass through the DAC of the Note but through the DAC of the headphone supposedly better...
I think that the note is capable of streaming audio with the Bluetooth connection.

Because there are not high end bt headphones with quality comparable as good iems.
Yes there are some, for example from Sennheiser but they are not cheap.
Anyway, one that says that there are noticeable differences without a good quality headphone is really making a subjective statement, since the non linearity and signal to noise ratio on an average headset even intra ears is usually horrible.
Even the best audiophile headphones have a THD that is only 0.02% at 1 kHz (about 74 dB). This is by far worse than even the crappiest DACs (some have less than 90 dB but the best ones have >100 dB THD).
Knowing this, in the combination DAC+Heaadphone, it is really the headphone that makes the difference in sound. The DAC non idealities are orders of magnitude below the headphone non idealities.
Hello!
I am reading more and more bad reports about the audio quality and loudness over BT, if you tried it (car specially) is it really bad and not loud enough?
The only thing I like in my One is the sound quality even on BT of my car (though it has aptx)
as far as i know, the g2 has aptx. ive used it for my bluetooth (through aux) and its the same loudness as my htc one. cant say there is a difference.
I can say coming from from an iPhone 5 to the G2 there is a little bit of audio quality difference. I wasn't sure if it was just me paying attention closer since its my first full time android phone.
The highs tones are very high and the rest of the sound is kind of neutral compared to the iPhone 5. In sound its like listening to a 128kbps song versus a 256kbps. If you listen closely enough you can hear a tiny bit of distortion/noise but I think if the equalizer was able to be adjusted that would not be noticeable.
Seems the same as my GNex. No complaints or concerns.

Are u talking about the sound with or without headphones?
Anyway I think the sound is one of the best u can find on any cell phone, there are just a few better (htc m8 4 example). If u are talking headphones I would personally advice anyone to switch away from in ear headphones (sound always bad to me) and take some real headphones instead. Hope that helps in any way

Bundled headphones are rather poor/flat for music - I still use those sometimes as a headset since the controls and mic work (while other models of headsets do not) but for music I use separate headphones.
I use the earpiece from my HTC one and it sounds nice.
Only caveat is the music player of touchwiz is slow and dumb.

I donot know if it is something wrong with the galaxy lineup or maybe android but I am having poor music quality on my phones I had a galaxy s3 and now a galaxy note 3 .Tried nearly every player poweramp, winamp, player pro and even rooted the s3 to try viper4android but the music always sucks either too flat or too noisy .should I try a sony device or the music on android isnot rich and crips (os problem).
I tried the new Adapt sound in note 3 with the default player and nothing new.
I use the bundled samsung headsets (tell me if I should replace them).
Thanks in advance ☺.

Try over ear headphones or at least switch if you like earphones. I haven't had any issues with the sound using sl 150 headphones.
good music quality achived but with issues
I tried apollo + dsp manager yesterday with the bundled headphones and the sound quality was greatly improved but the installation of the dsp manager messed up the default music player and the system as they become not responding when I get notifications during apollo playback . Maybe I will try a cm based rom any recommendation for good ones .
Thanks.
Head on over to hi fi org. Music, get a separate player like a Fiio x3 or x5. My rig is an x3 with vmoda m100 headphones, powered by a portaphile 627 amp. Day and night totally. I hate carrying both around but sound on phones are anemic at best.

Samsung stock IEM suck.
Can't believe flagship phone like this got iem like this. Coming from LG phone, the quality of bundled iem like day and night. Even quadbeat 1(optimus g and g pro bundle iem) blown away this ****ty iem.
Now i'm using Qb2 (g2 iem) with poweramp
Sound is much2 better

Yeah, the included headset is a piece of crap.
I had the same thought at first, thought something was wrong with the phone. After listening to some music with my HD598, I can safely say that the phone has very good audio quality.

You also may opt for a ROM with Viper Audio, but seriously you need better headphones first.
As others have said I would agree
1) Standard in ear headphones are not very good quality with any phone.
2) Android doesn't seem to be oriented towards prioritising high quality audio.
Having said that there are a number of steps that are likely to improve audio quality depending on how important and how much money you're willing to spend.
My advice would be first get a decent over the ear quality headphone.
Then get your music in lossless format e.g flac files not low bit rate mp3.
My personal favourite music player is Neutronmp.
Then if you still want more and are willing to spend more then the advice to head over to headfi given earlier is going to lead to an excellent source of advice.
Likely advice, again referred to earlier would involve investing in a separate dac / headphone amp.
Many available at different prices, I use Fiio E17 via usb otg cable and usb audio player Pro

To OP :
buy and try this app before throwing your Note3.

I am a 2-year fan of Neutron Mp app, and comment much to the devs when they improving that app.
Suddenly, I saw uapp when searching smt not music related. I tried demo in 30 minutes then I know I must paid uapp!
Memo : You need to have a good hp to confirm (not to use crappy inear)
