Replace Motherboard on Note 4 with eMMC error? My sad experience... - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe one day I'll post the little video I made today of my epic fail. Long and short of it.... I am waiting on a Chinese mb for a gifted (non-working) Note 4 I have (er, had).
Long and the short of it is that the real snag in the entire process is getting the screen and motherboard to separate from the back of the phone. My result was that I trashed the screen / silver material behind the screen. Royally. Despite having tools that are for dissecting phones.
So I spent 30 bucks on a mb that I'll probably never use. Maybe I can send it back (we'll see). But I'd warn off anyone buty a *serious* hardware professional from trying this mythical mb replacement gambit. I was up for the challenge.... but alas, no dice.
I will leave this clue for anyone else who says "What the heck, let's try." Do use a *thin* blade between the edge of the screen and the case's inner edge. Do *not* let the blade move sideways *at all* - it must go straight down toward the back of the phone. If you go sideways ever so little, you will (a) crack your screen, and (b) separate it from the silvery backing which then will also get cracked in many pieces.
I'd say have at it, but that would be encouraging you to throw money away. :silly:

Why would you fiddle around with the display if you only want to replace the mainboard?
There are more than enough you tube video showing you how to do it without undoing the display from the midframe/display...True, to fit one of the small connectors (coming off the display) back onto the MB you may need to place a bit of paper under the connector to make it easier to lock it back in place on the MB but that's all.
I did a few now...never touch the display if its undamaged, that's the golden rule.
Look for a intact Note 4 with MB problems and use the MB you already bought...good luck!

and why would you order the MB without actually trying yourself in?
I ll open up the damn mobile and take the faulty MB out, once I hv done that, then only I ll order the new MB,
anyway all the best with your MB/mobile

[Q] [DISCUSS] HD2 Damaged - Opinions Requested!

So over a trip I went on, my beautiful HD2 stopped working. I have my suspicions as to what caused the damage, but they still come off as odd. Basically, I had my HD2 working perfectly ... I went into the bathroom to take a shower ... and I guess it was steamier than usual [since I was in a different climate than usual] ... the next day the device would vibrate to indicate boot but only display a faint logo onscreen of the ROM I am using [meaning backlight broken] then it would turn off after trying to boot I guess. I checked out the phone, looked for damage or water or anything ... couldn't find anything significant. I did notice that the tags on the phone and batter, which I learned are for water detection, had turned red. That struck me as odd because it wasn't the first time I had the phone in the bathroom with me. In any case, at this point the device won't even turn on ... plugging in the charger does nothing. It is basically dead.
NOTE: AT NO POINT DID THIS PHONE GO INTO THE SHOWER OR TOILET OR WHATEVER. IT WAS PLACED DOWN ON A DRY SURFACE BEFORE THE SHOWER.
So I am going to T-Mobile tomorrow, see if they will be kind to me haha. I highly doubt it, because the tags don't lie .. regardless of whether or not I feel it was a valid case of "water damage".
So, if they give me warranty and provide me with a new HD2, then this thread will be useless, but under the assumption they don't ... I was wondering if the HD2 is the phone to stick with.
I think it is great and all, but I always wonder if there is something better.
I was reading that the Nokia N8 can be run on T-Mobile USA when unlocked, I am not sure of the truth behind that ... but the specs on that device look pretty awesome. I just don't like that it is a huge switch from WinMo/Andro/WP7 capabilities. It also doesn't have that XDA-Developers community backing.
That is basically all I was thinking in terms of alternatives ... any other thoughts?
Man that really sucks about your HD2, and that is very curious that the water indicators turned red. I also don't think you will get much love from T-Mobile either because of the water indicators. But I say get another HD2, I know it is starting to become a older device now but to me there is just no other phone out there that can stand up to the awesomeness of the HD2. Besides you know if you get anything besides a HD2 you will be kicking yourself in the butt later on for not getting another HD2.
The Nokia N8 will not keep you happy, there are issues with both the software and hardware, similarto the issues Nokia software has been displaying from the 5800/5530 software fiasco.
I would never go near a top range nokia - they have lost the plot over the last 2/3 years. all imho of course
I have a myTouch 4G/HTC Glacier and the phone is a beast. screen looks awesome(but not as big as hd2), hspa+, 768mb RAM, front facing camera, etc...lots of nice ROMS and great devs. Im running cm7 rc4 on mytouch and get 30+ hours on a full battery charge
So I went to T-Mobile today ... they instructed me to call Customer Care and they should be able to send me a new device. Looks like I am sticking to the HD2.
I am still curious though: I am aspiring to be a Software Developer (actually, Cornell CS '15 ), and for that reason I know the HD2 is a great phone for me [I think it is like 5 different OSes it can run]. I have been curious, because I haven't had the time to sit down and do this myself, which OS is best to have on NAND ... since now the HD2 can do WinMo, Andro, [and WP7?] on boot. I feel like WinMo is a great choice, because then I can use HARET to boot Android ... but then I can't use WP7. And if I choose WP7, then I am stuck with just that. And if I choose Andoird, then I am stuck with just that.
I dunno ... just something to ponder I guess Opinions are greatly appreciated
Keep checking this thread m8 for ppl's views on OS.

If you choose WP7, you can run Android off SD card via MAGLDR.

So its official, adios HD2
I wish the device weren't so darn expensive! Unless I get paid as I am expecting for a little job I did recently, I may have to put off my hopes to get another HD2 for a while.
Anyone have any good recommendations of where to buy a New or LIKE New HD2 cheap? ... I can deal with superficial damage on the back-side, as long as the camera lens and the entire front side have NO damages to them [and of course the phone functions like new]. I have scavenged ebay a bunch today...best offer I could find was about 300$ for a brand new device, 280$ for a Like-New that fits my criteria ... 250$ for a like-new that is a little less appealing.

I may be willing to sell my hd2
So I ended up buying a new [Used] HD2. I was told that the only issue was the metal plate over the batter [which I saved from my old HD2] ... so I was fine with it. I just got it today, it had a few minor scratches on the screen as well as what i think is a tiny Crack. So I am debating putting up with it, or calling the guy up and asking him what is up with that...
I purchased it on eBay ... so I just wanted your opinion on this: I bought it pretty cheap [235$] in comparison to other offers on the site, and the description was:
HTC HD2 (T-Mobile) cell phone
Used but in overall excellent condition
The only issue is that the metal cover on the back has some scratches, nothing major, screen is excellent
Includes phone /w battery and charger only, charger is not the original HTC charger, but it works 100%t

I called the guy up to ask a few questions: Is it just the back-plate that has superficial damage? Has the device been tested to work as though new? The screen has nothing on it? And the guy basically told me that the back-plate was the only issue. Now that I have the phone, though, there are those minor scratches, and that small crack on the screen, as well as the cover to the earpiece missing/worn so it is silver now, and also the top right and left corners have a bit of damage.
Basically, when I put the soft-shell cover I have over it [stock], I can't see any of the superficial things except the screen, so they don't bother me as much. After all, it was listed USED, so I expected so much. I am just concerned about the SCREEN. If it is a crack on the screen, it will just get worse with time, am I right? If it were a scratch I could deal with it MAYBE, but being a crack I just don't want to have to look towards buying a THIRD device later on due to a cracked screen ...
[by the way, this crack wasn't a result of shipping I think ... it was in a nice thick layer of bubble-wrap and none of the bubbles had popped.]
So what is your opinion? Should I call this guy up, see what the deal is? Or should I deal with it?
Opinions appreciated!
EDIT:: Here are some low-res photos [one close-up, one far away]. I had to use my Exca to take them, I couldn't find my camera

Swapping just the one piece is harder than swapping a glass digitizer screen combo, since to get them apart involves baking the phone for so many minutes at (I think it is) 60 degrees, then you will need to glue the new one back to the digitizer.its not just a simple swap. Plus the screen is the last piece in the stripdown process, EVERYTHING comes apart before you get to the screen.
If I were you I'd consider asking for some money back and live with the crack, or if he wont go for that tell him you want full refund. But you need to be quick, eBay will support your claim but leave it too long makes it look dodgy.
as for cracked screen getting progressively worse, that's not necessarily the case. I dropped mine ages ago (several months) and it now has around 8 or9 large cracks, all the way through the glass radiating from one corner all the way up to the top, and they are no worse now than when it happened, (i have a screen protector to save my fingers from possible sharp bits) though the rigidity has suffered greatly, and it now creaks and groans when it gets pressure in my pocket.
Yeah, I figured so much about the screen ... Turns out what I have is screen+digitizer, but the cable for the digitizer isn't in any condition where it will work again, haha. I didn't expect/want to do a screen-replace when I took apart my broken HD2.
Yeah, I know I have to act quickly for eBay to hold up a better case, in case the guy doesn't want to be easy about it. I just got the phone literally an hour ago in the mail.
I'll try to have some more higher-res photos up by tonight because I am still not sure if it is just a nasty scratch, or a crack...and as you can see my Excalibur doesn't exactly take a good picture haha. What I find odd is that usually a crack starts at the edge of the glass and progresses inwards, but this one starts in the middle of the screen and has like 3 little 'legs' of it coming out. I'm not scratch/crack expert so I can't really say ... I'll just have the photos up later.
Otherwise, I'll probably call the guy up tomorrow, see what the deal is/is going to be.
I would demand a Partial refund if you are happy enough with the phone.
If you get it, buy a zagg invisible shield screen protector to preven the crack from getting any worse. Had some good and bad luck with ebay purchases, but thats a story for another thread
Could be a pressure crack, I have a friend with a desire HD and he sat down with it in pocket, and a lighter against the screen, and he has a similar sounding crack, a few small cracks radiating out from a tiny central chip.
Okay, so I got the higher-res images ... the links are as follows:
www.chicken-eggsolutions.com/Max/IMG_0278.jpg
www.chicken-eggsolutions.com/Max/IMG_0279.jpg
www.chicken-eggsolutions.com/Max/IMG_0280.jpg
www.chicken-eggsolutions.com/Max/IMG_0281.jpg
I think that 280 shows it the best, the others give you a view of it in respect to the whole phone. It isn't huge or anything ... decently sized. When the screen is on, I really have to look to find it. Besides feeling it with my finger as I swipe over it, I wouldn't really be bothered by its being there. My friend said it seems more like a surface scratch, but unlike the other scratches, I can actually feel this one [which is why I think it is more like a crack]. Ohh semantics!
In any case, just another curious question. Seeing as I just got the phone, I haven't put on any custom ROM or anything, assuming I would have to settle an issue potentially, but I realized when trying to hook the phone up to my computer that the SD card didn't register. It had registered just fine earlier today, and at my friends house. Then I didn't use it for maybe 4 hours. Then just now it didn't register. It was fixed with a reboot. Is this likely an OS thing that will be fixed with a new flash of a better ROM [this is running a STOCK rom by the way]. This phone would be pretty limited without its MicroSD Card slot. I just want to make sure that if that is a hardware issue, I bring that up.
I guess this will be the final post/update:
I talked to the guy, and he offered me either to ship it back at my expense [but still get a full refund], or he could give me $25 for the inconvenience/hassle. Having really thought about it, looked at the scratch/crack. I took him up on the latter offer.
I guess it just means I should be more careful when using the phone. After all, its like I said: I can't notice it unless I look for it when the device is on. Its a shame that there was a crack on the screen, but for $200, I think it is a darn good bargain. Also, the MicroSD card slot has been working just fine...I think it was an OS thing. If the MicroSD card slot does turn out to be an issue, hopefully it is within the next 40 days, haha, so I can still get it covered by Buyer Protection. Further, I simply cannot find a price as good as that
So, I guess this is the end of this thread. Thanks to anyone who helped

Screen Replacement Success!

So, if your 2 year old is like mine, he's quite efficient at shattering your phone's screen. SO, I went online and found a replacement screen and set sbout installing it myself. I make no claim at any sort of electrical know-how... Damn it Jim, I'm a med student not an electrician. But I do enjoy my gadgets. Anyway, I went online and found some you-tube videos and successfully changed out the screen! Woo-Hoo! I used a hybrid of the two videos as one of them seemed a little too, much but it had a good rebuild sequence.
The first video has a good description of how to remove the screen (I didn't use the hair dryier and it worked just fine), and the second shows how to put it back. The second video should also be good to show how to replace other thinsg (camera, etc.).

I hope this helps people out there make their own replacements a success!
May I ask how much did it cost you and how long did it took? Did you have to buy any special tools?
It required a small electronics set of screw drivers (phillips) and it came with a plastic pry tool that I used for everytyhing except taking the screws out. It also comes with a tiny star drive screwdriver that I held onto but didn't use. I purchased it onlie from someone that I thought was based in Cali, but it turns out that he's in China. So it took 2 to 3 weeks to get it to me. I paid 115 for it, but if this happens again (dear lord please no) I'll pay a little more for someone that I know is in the states. There's a discussion in the accessories forum that lists some sites that have replacement screens.

[Q] A case that doesn`t fall out one end???

I'm using the standard Acer case but I like to use it in my hand, upsidedown, but due to the one end of the case being open the A500 slides out.
What I'm hoping you people can help me with is, I`m after a case that allows for it to be folded flat when open (for use being held - I don't use it on a table) and doesn't slip out (so held secure all around); and preferably doesn't cover the bezel around the screen.
I know I'm asking a lot here, and I've looked at loads of cases, but the pictures don't show the detail needed to see if this fits the bill.
Thanks in advance.

Im not exactly sure what u mean by holding it upside down and stuff but i think the case i use would work. The tablet doesnt slide out at all (unless you force it) and the bezel isnt covered.
Here it is: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005AZ7B4S/ref=oh_o03_s01_i00_details
I`d had a look at that, and read good things about it, but didn`t know the specifics; thanks for the headsup.
@coercri.....Some time ago I bought the "Vipertek" case which appears identical to the one jon described only different name. I published my comments and pictures on another thread in this forum. I think the same design case has popped up on Amazon over last months all about the same price with different names. It's still working well for me and holds the tab really well no matter which orientation you use. I have copied my original post including photos and attach it for your information.
The link posted by azoller1 in reply to my original post is the correct link to Amaz. Ordered it on 11/12/11 and it arrived by USPS on 11/16/11. It looks, it feels and it smells like leather on the outside whilst the inner lining is micro-fill. It has 6 "clips", (looking at it in landscape view) 2 are at the top L & R corners, 2 are at the bottom L & R corners and the final 2 are on the L & R sides about one third of the way down from the top. When it is closed up the A500 engages in all 6 clips. When it is fully closed every "input" (power, hdmi, usb full, usb "B", on/off button, volume up/down, rotation lock and even the sd card cover) are all accessible. To operate the A500 you have to "unhook" the bottom 2 clips and slide the bottom edge of the A500 into one of the "ridges" where it rests at the required angle. Although I am not an acomplished photographer I hope the attached photos will show that.
Having used it for a couple of days I am growing to like it especially at the price I paid.......THERE LIES THE RUB!......... When I bought it on 11/12/11 it was quoted on Amaz's site as $9.93 plus $4.99 shipping and even without seeing it I thought I couldn't go wrong at that price. On Tuesday 11/15/11 I went to Amaz's to check on delivery date and ........SHOCK HORROR........ found that the price was now shown as $19.98 plus shipping. Long story short I checked my bank account and found that the original price quoted me of $9.93 plus shipping was what had been charged to my debit card. There was no notice on the web site when I bought it that it was a special offer or some such so I can only conclude that for a short time a mistake had been made by the selling company.
At the price I paid I would heartily recommend this case BUT I am not certain I would at twice the price. But if you like the look of it, look around and see if you can find a reduced price.

Many thanks for the information.
Also many thanks from me as well, had the Acer brand case and got soooo annoyed by it slipping out, and not this one looks promising.

exploded capacitor - Need high resolution photos

Hi all!
I've made a common mistake... i left my shift very long time ago on my bed to go somewhere... and a movie was playing... so it got hot.
It was on a blanket so the temperature got high, so eventually it burned one of the ceramic capacitors and i cannot anymore change my screen to window mobile and it has a white line going diagonally down the middle making the right part of the screen unusable... still show colors on the right but everything is blurry...
On the left i can see everything clearly and i can use it normally without any changes in computing performance.
When i using the shift with external monitor everything is normal, but still cannot see the winmo side on the monitor, but physically still exists.
I would like some close up high resolution photos of the device with the metallic covers removed so i can identify the type of capacitor the i need in order to replace it.
I searched for a motherboard diagram but cannot find any ....
Thank you in advance for your attention and help
In my opinion the HTC Shift should be a collectors' item - it was premium and expensive when it came out, and is HTCs only WIndows computer.
But on ebay, they are selling for like 70 pounds.
Granted, they may not be as clean as your device, but its an option if the components can't be fixed.
i did not ask for this
I asked something specific, not your opinion.

Project FrankeNexus-- 1 easy question, 1 tricky question

Let me make a quick note, that if you're either A) a genius or B) at work and are just skimming through posts, feel free to skip to paragraph 5 (or maybe its 6? ) to skip the fat and jump straight to meat of my querry.
Okay, so I wish my post was actually as interesting as my title (im sensing potential as a news website author). But anyways, so I got a really sweet deal on a refurbished Gold 32 gig 6p through best buy about 2 months ago. Ive been out of the tinkering scene for a couple years, and decided to get a 6p once I started to realize that the legend that is nexus was more than likely coming to an end, courtesy of the Pixel line. I bought the Gold one bc they ran a sale at Best buy for a 32 gig refurbished 6p for $313 for the gold specifically. Apparently they made a mistake in advertising but due to their price match guarantee I was able to capitalize on it. There was only one problem: I hated the gold one. And I dont' mean I liked it the least of the 4 colors offered-- it literally was the only color of the four that I didn't like. I figured I would be able to cover it with a case temporarily and eventually do a housing swap to change the color.
Well, within 2 days of owning the phone, my neighbor slid it into her back pocket for a moment while talking to my girlfriend, and lets just say... how do i put this gently...think Chris Farley, but female, and, "fat girl in a little pants". I winced as inconspicuously as I could, as I watched her hips swaying to a rendition of American woman playing in the background on youtube. Before things got too serious, I came up with an excuse as to why I needed to skedaddle, she handed me my phone, and i slunked out of their apartment carrying my 6p like smeagol getting out of there with his precious. Everything seemed alright upon first inspection, but as I got home and put it in the light I realized-- *Duh Duh Duuuuunnnnn*-- before i even realized what had happened, I had found myself on the wrong side of the "tight jeans bent my made-in-china volume rocker" statistic. At first it gave me problems with hard resets, but eventually I was able to use a razor blade to dislodge the jammed button, which allowed me to push the stock image back onto the device so I could attempt to RMA it.
But then it hit me-- whats the point of messing around with it, if I'm going to replace the housing anyways? Well, at some point along this excruciatingly long version of my story (which probably took less time to actually play out in reality), iFixit delivered quite a slap in the face to me with their "2 out of 10" repairability score. But, my girlfriend gave me just enough confidence to carry on with the project after declaring that my fingers are frickin magic, and that the difficult housing transplant shouldn't be too hard for someone with my level of natural talent.
Moving on to chapter 64: So all I have to do now, is choose which color housing I want to replace the gold with, and order the parts-- this is where I decide to go franken nexus. Since the housing, fingerprint scanner, sim card tray, etc, all have to be bought seperately in order to have a uniform color change, I figured I would mix things up and go with either a white or silver (I'll probably go ahead and get both) main housing, and order the sim tray, volume rockers, fingerprint scanner, and probably even the back bottom piece in black to have a unique loo courtesy of an accent color. And alas; even though I didn't produce the background here quite as quick as Bob Ross with a paint scraper, we have invariably arrived at question number 1:
if you order a replacement housing, do they come with the volume rocker and power button included?
I can't find a definitive answer in any of the pictures for the ones Ive looked at, but since the closest thing I can find to the buttons are the ribbon/cable for them, I'm assuming this is the case. I'm also assuming if I want a white housing with black buttons, that I will have to simply buy a black housing as well? I've found the glass camera cover seperate, the sim trays, the fingerprint scanners-- heck, even the little strip on the bottom-- being sold seperately, but I cannot for the life of me find any volume rocker/power button combos sold individually.
And To conclude The longest, most obvious waste of time that a post could ever hope to achieve..my second question: Say a man were inclined, during his construction of a Franken Nexus, to attempt to swap out the 32 GB ssd memory chip on his mother board with a 128 GB one-- I'm not asking about the level of technical difficulty that presents-- we are, of course, working under the assumption that not only would the technician be in possession of magic frickin fingers, but he also happens to be good buddies with Johnny 5. The guy loves input, he already read up on whats required and he swears that his little third arm could sodder and switch out those memory chips just as good as it can break into any circa 1987 gm vehicle. BUT-- assuming johnny 5 was there to help with the physical removal of the old chip, and the installation of the new one-- would transplant on the motherboard be possible, to turn a 32 GB nexus 6p into a 128? Is there anything that changes with the source code anywhere? In the kernel source code or anything? what would such a job entail, if someone (other than number 5) were to explain it? How feasible would this project be? I used to know some code, but the only thing it was ever good for was getting me into the cool kids treehouse and getting slapped by mindy crane in the seventh grade so I'm not sure how much help it would be for me here.
Thank you for your time, and your INPUT!!! IIIIINNNNPUUUUUTTTTT!!!! who-- easy number 5.
Man, I mean I wasn't expecting to win any comedy awards but sheesh. Tough crowd.
For real, noone knows if the volume rocker and power button cones with the replacement housing?
When I got my case it had all the buttons, glass and trim. I had the black one but the color chips off so I went with the silver body and kept the black fingerprint.
Along the lines of swapping the storage, that would be near impossible since it is micro soldered to the board, likelyhood of ruining the phone is 99.9999999999999%. Maybe finding a pulled 128gb board would be better and swapping that. Asking the seller of the case would be best to know what you're getting.
What the hell just happened here?
