Very bad news. Note 4 dying... Freezes, Restarts, Vibrates - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My beloved Note 4 is I think dying. I have read several threads, tried all techniques that have been used, including cleanup, cache clean, factory reset, wake lock etc. After restarting it may hold good for sometime but then screen freezes becomes black, exact two vibrations and the phone restarts.
It was an unrooted, very well maintained. I had changed the battery 4-6 weeks back to an Anker Note 4 battery as my stock battery was not holding charge below 15%. Nothing else changed. Perhaps running some magazine apps from mobi, but otherwise just took very good care of this.
I am so disappointed that words fail me to have lost this epic best device ever created.
If you guys can think off any thing I can do to revive my beloved Note 4, please let me know. Please.
Thanks

Frustrating
Strange thing as of this week, mine is doing the same thing - struggling to get it started, and tried everything including the reinstalling the rom - got a brand new battery and nothing is working....I did do an update just before all this started.

i really think its the battery too.... i've had the same problem a while back.

Nope swapping with stock battery still same freezes. Here's the weird part now. Three days running without freezing. I also watched a 45 min YouTube video at 720p. Nothing yet. I wonder is it because of the sheer power of the device and the way we put it on a an overdrive (running almost PC like tasks) has stressed the hardware out and which is now beginning to fail. I am still going to log the sequence of events when this happens. Now replying this via my note 4.

Also is running the best application made for Android (dns66) safe? A VPN vs rooted adaway is very different. Hope no anomalies with this.

I should write a book titled "how to jinx it". Phone back to freezing mode. Will start it tomorrow morning. Activity that I was doing is browsing the Amazon app and loading some item photos and the black frozen screen of death.

Can you post details of the update? What location? I don't think users in Canada are expecting any further updates.

I was having screen freezes without loss of power, would still work with S pen, rooted and installed other roms, tried a 1000 different things and nothing worked. Started having this issues after an official update. Bought a anker battery which solved some battery problems but the rest of the issues remained. 1 month ago phone started going black screen and turning off. Couldnt power it on, had to remove battery to start it again. 2 weeks ago installed nemesys rom and now working all like a charm. Hope im not jinxing it now.
Have exynos 910C

Eva, can you please keep checking and posting your results here. Fingers crossed too.
Also a brief step by step guide to install nemesys rom would greatly help.
I also thought if Nougat could fix the issue?

Will be calling Samsung support today based on suggestions on the other freeze thread. If 300 euros (that would be brand new phone in Canada), I am going to take this forward to the press.

It is a well known issue. Please read similar post in this forum (note 4 freeze and restart).
Solved only by installing app called wakelock, that drains a bit.
Samsung doesn't pronunce about that, but they know, oh, if they know. But the cure is expensive, and they want to avoid massive recall.
So, this is.
Greetings.
Oh, and someone better than me should investigate why wakelock works. Perhaps, it may help thousands users, around the world.

You have a problem with your EMMC chip!

Just over 2 years old note 4 G model. There are days mine restarts up to 10 times. In a "good" day only 2-3 times. Only gets worse in the last half year. Need a solution.

Problems like these are either hardware or software. Try a clean wipe and then reflash latest stock rom for your device via Odin. Do not install too many other apps, and do not install xposed or root, etc. Keep it basic. If problems go away, then the issue is related to a troublesome app or something that was corrupted on your previous rom installation. If problems persist, then it is likely hardware (which, given the age of the device today, may not be cost effective to fix). Hope this helps.

Mine became almost useless...freezing screen, unresponsive buttons, reboots escalated from 3-4x a day to 9-10x a day, getting stuck on either the Samsung or Sprint boot screen. Push came to shove and I completely formatted and installed the phone back to stock. I can't recall which ODIN flashable version of 6.01 I found, but it worked fine for about half a day...until the phone pushed an OTA update on me. It was like a brand new phone again, but like clockwork I was right back to 3-4 reboots a day... at least it was only that.
So far I'm on day 2 of flashing "Baseband version N910PVPS4DPK1 via ODIN, installed TWRP and then installing a custom Zerolemon mod baked into the stock kernel by @lucasaddon. Give me a full week of heavy usage (I go through an IBESTWIN 10,000mah battery at least every day via streaming while I'm at work, so I've got two of these batteries) and with his permission, I'll share it here.

The best approach so far (if you live in the US) is to send it to the Samsung repair facility in Plano, TX. It will cost anywhere from about $50 to $150 to get it fixed, but they will repair it to like new condition. I did that several months ago and mine still works flawlessly.
Good luck!!!

[Q] Broken Nexus 4 or what?

Dear all,
I got my N4 since 2 weeks and it worked very well for many days: I used stock 4.2.1, unlocked bootloader and rooted, then updated to 4.2.2. Few days ago I noted a very strange behavior: the battery discharge very fast even without any use. I spent many days debugging the behaviour of the phone also using Better Battery Stats. The result: during standby about 95% of the time in deep-sleep but the battery went down to the rate of about 20%/hour. Then I decided to make a factory reset of everything: I've tried with 4.2.2 but also with 4.2.1.
Nothing: restored every part of the rom (using the official occam image) except to lock again the bootloader, factory reset from the stock recovery and booted. No SIM inside and airplain mode: discharge in 4-5 hours without even touch it...
It looks too strange for me (I used other Android phones in the past): I'm starting to think that something got broken in my Nexus 4. Maybe the battery or something in the hardware that discharge the battery.
What do you think about my case? Any attempt before I contact LG for the RMA procedure?
Many thanks.
I would flash a custom rom and a custom kernel, Project Butter uses a lot of power to have everything as fast as possible. You can have the same/better speed with a custom rom without sacrificing much battery + customization.

I doesn't look a question of "non optimized use": they behaviour is very strange. A full battery (100%) goes to ZERO in about 5 hours without touching the phone, with stock image/recovery/radio/bootloader, without SIM, in airplain mode and after a fresh factory reset.
HELP: I bought it in Germany (Media Markt) and I live in Italy. I'm starting to cry just thinking how to proceed to the RMA...

Contact MM in Germany.
If they can't help you out contact LG Germany directly. They might help you out.

I have a solution
Buy a good cover for the phone, and just slap the sim directly to the phone without using the tray. This works for me.

anyway you might want to try opening the back and disconnecting the battery, give the connector a blow or whatever and giving it another try... from previous posts i have read it seems you can do this without disturbing any warranty stickers.

Red Light Of Death - Should I Be Concerned?

Hey Guys.
I'm very excited to get my nexus 4 but I've been hearing a lot of people talking about the RLOD!!
What causes this problem and is there anyway to fix this??

the red light is just caused by using your phone the wrong way. it won't happen if you do not flash a custom rom anyway.
And if you flash custom roms it won't happen either, if you follow the standard steps you have to follow on every android phone. It's just a brick that can happen on every android device if you flash broken .zip's or anything else comparable .
People who claim this happened from a moment to the next without them doing anything wrong, are just not telling the truth. Even IF this would happen this way(not your own fault), you could easily get a replacement from google without any costs or problems.
Thanks for the reply,
Ive heard many people who had a completely stock and unrooted nexus 4 say they got a red light of death too... The problem is, I don't live in any of the countries that have playstore devices. So I'm having somebody from the US bring it for me...

propably you could check the rev of those n4's (asking them in pm's). i can't imagine rev11+ have this problem anymore. I still won't believe this happened without a reason

These many people you speak of? That's not even half possible for it to RLOD on pure stock without any mods it's just to save the hardware its the phones built in safety net...unless you plan on OCing to 1.98ghz and set it to performance and run antutu that will most likely do it for you
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Hi,
It happened wih or without running an Antutu bench. Yes some users have reported the red light on stock with rev 10 or with rev 11.
Antutu is not directly the culprit, it's due to a bad read of battery stuff (in a stress condition even at 50% battery the phone think you are out of battery then shutdown + heat, there is an issue with some phone about the battery contact inside the phone). If it's happen you can try to let your phone in charging for hours, sometimes it's enough. But the better thing is to open your phone then disconnect / reconnect the battery.
It happened also while flashing something in recovery mod, 40% battery, flash then reboot and bam red light...
Also on a French forum it happened during a download while browsing...
I agree we not know all the conditions together when it happened but it seems this is slightly random. Maybe a combination of circumstances...
It's "just" related to some weird battery reading issue.
For example I ran a bunch of Antutu bench with / without overclocking at different battery % (even at 11% battery ) without any issues, at least until today...
Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36304348
So does this problem happen to everybody or is only a minority of nexus 4 users affected? Do you think google would've fixed this problem by now??
Re,
It seems it's a minority phones who are concerned...
I don't know if Lg / Google have worked on the problem. As I read maybe the rev 11 are less concerned? But I'm not sure...
Don't be afraid, use your phone and if that happens rma or open your phone, there is always a solution
Alright, read a lot of threads and it looks like removing the battery and starting it again works perfectly. I also read somewhere that its due to too much pressure being applied on the thing the connects the battery to the phone.. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128392&highlight=red+light+of+death&page=2
Yes, it's what I said, ah I forgot this link.
When you search, you find
Happened to me a few days after I got it (100%stock, not rooted); I left it charging for some time and it turned on again like nothing happened. Didn't happened since.
Only time I had it was when I first rooted.
It got stuck in a boot loop on the "X" screen and when I rebooted to clear the cache the red light flashed and I had to hold the power button in to turn it off.
Booted into recover fine after that.
No issues since.
Alright that's good to hear. When did you guys get your nexus?? Maybe google resolved this issue.
I got mine very recently ordered in late February. It did red light because I flashed a mod which was for the nexus 7 but i flashed it on my nexus 4. I just went into recovery and flashed stock, phone was fine.

That is not true.. Red light appears due to some small chip next to the battery which is hardly put in there, you just need to release some pressure and it will be fine.. (there's a youtube video)
Loosen the screws?? Do you have a link to the YT video?
Ordered mine when they were first available, got it 2-3 weeks later (end of November).
Got a bricked rev11 301k here. Tried everything untill I get my replacement (takes a bit longer since I live in holland). Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2177787&highlight=nexus+4+bricked for more info. Now I try to drain the battery and let it charge (put it in a cold enviroment for a full 24 hrs. Got past the google logo for half a second and saw the stock recovery before it went dead again

[S4 Active]- So my phone started freezing up on me yesterday...

My experience with my S4A has been amazingly flawless up until yesterday, when it started experiencing one of the issues that killed my experience with the HTC One- random freezes. And what's strange about it is that they are the same type of freezes that my One experienced, only when browsing the web or using an internet based app like Pulse. It has happened 3 times since yesterday and is so bad that I've had to pull the battery to even get it to reboot. Which brings me to one of my suspicions...
The only thing that has changed between me getting the phone set up originally and when the freezes began was the fact that I started swapping batteries instead of charging the phone. Now, phone batteries nowadays are not just like your average AA cell, it has circuitry in it and NFC stuff... is it possible that a defective battery could be the culprit of my woes? I just put in my original battery and am gonna just wait and see if it happens. The other battery that I've been using is a Samsung OEM battery and not a cheap one. I did root and freeze a bunch of stuff, but nothing exotic, and it was fine until yesterday. I doubt anything I did caused this.
Has anyone else experienced any freezes like this? Help me solve this, I really want to keep this phone (at least until the next latest and greatest comes out). TIA

Same here. Nothing I froze should have any affect on system stability.
I Haven't had any issues since I've had the phone, going on 3 weeks. I've been rooted and have froze apps in TB with no problems since geohot gave us root. Also have done some other root mods, and have not experienced any issues.
Sounds like just some bad hardware circulating.

Man I REALLY hope it's not a hardware issue. I'm so tired of doing the repeated exchange thing. I went through 5 One X's before I found a suitable one, saw that pattern emerging with the One (had 2, both with same issues) and was really hoping the S4A was going to be the answer to my woes. I really love this phone but if it ends up being a hardware thing, I will be incredibly disheartened.

I am rooted but that's pretty much it.
The only thing I know I was doing at the time was watching a YouTube video then pressed pause.
Next thing you know I picked it up hit the power... Nothing. Hit menu... Nothing. The blue LED was just the normal notification indicator, so I knew it hadn't powered off... Resulted in a battery pull.
I also know that I didn't get any messages or new notifications while the screen was off.

I ALWAYS have issues restoring from titanium backup, esp going from one phone to another. My suggestion is to factory reset and start with a clean slate, cas only then can u verify a hardware issue.

I know on the Captivate the Build Number could be found under the battery (can be found there on the S4A as well) and it was the year/month that the phone was built, or so they say. My S4A Build number is 1306 so I'm guessing it was built the beginning of June...

gf has had similar issues; heres what fixed it.
battery pull
factory reset/restore
reboot
battery pull
reboot
root/etc/restore from there. check to make sure you dont have custom CPU voltage/speed mods enabled; i believe this was the initial culprit, though even after resetting them to stock it would still lock up. it only did it 3 times, and usually right after a new mod, but ONLY if CPU values were changed. after the above procedure, she redid all her cpu values but only AFTER all mods were installed, rebooted, and everything works great again.

Same problems no matter which battery. It seems to happen most when I'm using Chrome so I deleted the updates but it's still doing it. It happened while playing a game today which it's never done before. Next step is to freeze Chrome and see if that helps. If not, then I'm gonna factory reset and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to exchange it. I really did not want to have to deal with this. With my ridiculous work schedule I don't have the time or the energy. I might just start looking for a different phone because I'm sick of having issues like this.

I would say if the factory reset does not work than it is the phone itself. I had issues like this in the past with my old infuse and I did a factory reset and it took care of it. Hopefully that will help you out so you can keep your phone. Thanks for replying.

Yeah bud, I really hope a reset works. I might do it tomorrow, I should have enough time. I'm just frustrated that I'm having identical issues with the S4A that I had on my One. I was really hoping to find a phone that just works. I don't think I've had a problem free phone since my Epic 4G Touch. My One X had issues (though my 5th one was near perfect), my iPhone 5 was horrible, both my Ones had problems, and now this. I'm just venting now but I'm seriously tired of it. I've got my eye on that new Sony i1 that's coming out in a couple months, I really love their current design choices and I've never tried a Sony before. Or maybe the next Nexus. Who knows. I just don't want to deal with this crap anymore.

[Q] How to fix strange battery behavior?

Since last week I am experiencing a really strange behavior of my battery.
Sometimes my phone (in a random app) just vibrates, the screen goes black and then it reboots. After the reboot I have lost 40-50% battery life. Sometimes the phones isn't even able to complete the reboot because it spontaneously has too little power left. See attached screenshots.
Has anybody had similar problems? Or knows a solution?
About my setup: The problem seems to be not rom or kernel related. It occurs no matter what rom or kernel setting I am using. Currently I am running coool boy's 4.3 GE witch KT's kernel (no OC or UV).
Is it possible that the battery is physically damaged? I have NO IDEA...
Experiencing the same problem. I've flashed back to stock and still experiencing this. Phone randomly turning off, not starting, sudden battery drops. Driving me crazy.

This looks pretty strange 0.o
Consider buying a new recovery

I've seen the same sort of graph on my old i9000. You're not gonna like this, but it got worse over time, and eventually my battery wouldn't last more than 5 mins. I thought buying a new battery would help, but it didn't. When I sent it in to Samsung they said they would have to replace the entire motherboard...
I think it's got something to do with the motherboard not being able to correctly sense the battery voltage/whatever/%. The phone reboots automatically because it thinks the battery is flat (even though it isn't).
If you're under warranty I suggest sending it in soon... Hopefully it's not the same as what I had heh.

Well *#!$
I'll observate it for the next few days and see if it's getting worse...
If your phone is rebooting as opposed to just powering off, then I suspect it is hardware related (motherboard) as already mentioned.
I do hope I'm wrong though.
Maybe try using it for extended periods while plugged into a charger and see what happens. If it doesn't reboot then it may just be the battery.
Right as OP I'm suffering the same exact problem or there abouts. I've flashed back to stock rom, fully charged to 100% drained to 0% back to 100% yet still phone keeps shutting off randomly and the only way it works properly is with the charger plugged in. It's escalated quite badly with now after a few mins of YouTube turning itself off and not rebooting. I've requested a repair by o2 who I'm in contract with and see what will happen. I've heard crap stories about their repairs before taking it to Samsung.
I9500 owner. Had this exact same problem when using older firmware. After updating to the latest one, never had this issue again. Its been two months now, even more.
Try this. Flash the latest available firmware for you phone, not talking about OTA but the downloadable one from any region (whichever is latest for i9505). I guess it may have something to do with the kernel too.
Edit: wait a minute, why is your battery level going up when it isn't even charging in the second screenshot. Middle of the battery timeline. That's weird. I guess you should send the phone back

Thank you guys :good:
In the last few days the problem occurred more often. But now it is just shutting down (no reboot after vibrate) and after plugging it to the charger and restarting it sometimes I haven't lost any battery. Strange!
I fear there is nothing else to do than turning it in (warranty)

Same problem here. It started three days ago and today I'm barely able to use it... I'm still on warraty and I even have insurance, but it's a major inconvenience anyway.
Mines gone in for repair back to my carrier still no movement despite them having it for 2 days now really should have sent it back to Samsung directly. Will keep you guys posted.

Will send it in tomorrow. Lady on the hotline told me apparently the motherboard is defect and I'll get a new S4. Exchange, no repair. I'm fine with that...

That's good to hear, just inconvenience but at least you won't have to pay for it (or have the defect materialize a year later or something)

Hey
I am new here.
but i was looking for information becuase my s4 9505i has the same problem
shuts of almost everytime i open apps too quickly or stream youtube or some other high usage apps etc.
battery drops up to 50 percent then back 40 percent then to 0 percent, the fact it that the phone never seems to know where the battery is.
by the way my phone is not rooted and i have done the factory reset a few times.
samsung... hmmm.. they seem to be real hard to talk to on the phone, i have had to call them 4 times already about the s4 i ahve had since june, and they just play me off like i am some kind of idiot etc. and deny that there is possibly any reason for random shutdowns, phone freezing, and now this battery/motherboard issue.
next bit is kinda stupid, the phone has a few internal scratches on it from when i ahve stupidly had the phone next to keys and all that. im sure they are going to try and void my warranty and say i have mistreated the phone...
had many phones before, maybe close to 50 and never, never, never have had to ring up a company to try and complain etc.....
any ideas.
I am in Australia,
I am thinking of trying the CONSUMER AFFAIRS kind of threats, but i have to word it the right way...

[Q] Nexus 4 sudden signal loss, battery drain and shutdown!

Hi all,
First post so go easy
I've had my N4 for about 18 months. Ever since 4.4.3 (now on 4.4.4 and nothings changed) I think I have been having some probelms.....I also dropped my phone around the time of the update so can't rule out a hardware problem, anyway....
On full charge the phone is, after a random amount of use perhaps around half battery, it drops signal completely....then it start goiing crazy, opening apps clicking on things (sometimes locks up) then shuts it's self off.
Once I turn it back on it says the battery is almost out.....even though before the crash it was at 50%???? (Please see imnage below for "cliff edge" on battery screen shot!)
I have tried safe mode, I have done a factory reset and removed all and any apps except facebook. Other symptoms include forgeting wifi and other account logins!
Also worth noteing I dropped it and smashed the screen, I then had it repaired and voided the warrenty (?) because I needed it same day for work.....dont know if thats connected was working fine for a while after this happened.
I have seen various posts of this forum and other about this kind of thing but no exact answers.....any help would be great 7 months until free new phone
Sudden drop is extreme right....
Re flash factory images for a full wipe, if it doesn't work after that then its probably hardware (sadly), maybe you could get a moto g? I've heard there really good and cheap.

Sounds like something went wrong during the repair or drop and that this is a hardware issue. As suggested, try flashing full stock, but I am pretty sure this is a hardware problem, unfortunately.

Thanks guys .....Ive been doing as much reading as pos.
Some people are saying reather than the drop its maybe just a failed battery? thoughts?
It could definitely be a possibility. If you are up to it, you could purchase a new battery and try to replace it, there is just the risk of damaging something further.

Same things happen to me. I thouhgt the battery is comming to end and orderd new one but I have read that people have some similar problems after updating from 4.4.2
On nexus 5 people also have problem with to fast battery drain. I have similar problems. I lose network, afterwards battery drop from 20-40% -> 0%

Same thing is happening to my wifes NEXUS 4. Hers is a little over a year old now. It was dropped and I replaced the screen a few months ago, but ever since the new updates, her phone has been going CRAZY!
The phone randomly loses signal, battery drains quickly and apps open close (ghost touches) and then it shuts down.
I've cleared the cache, reset to factory defaults and even run in safe mode and nothing. The phone is useless now, she maybe gets 2 hours of normal use out of it before it goes completely nuts again.
One of us should roll back to 4.2.2. and report the result

Facing similar issues. Have posted it here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/fast-battery-discharge-t2799931/post53790262?nocache=1
Any solutions?
I am waiting for a new battery. Try rollback to 4.2.2.
ITs same on my phone after an 4.4.3 update teh N4 gone rogue before the update it was working just fine I just did factory reset got back to 4.2.1 android and its doing the same
Just to keep you up to speed...I suspect it may be the battery....or perhaps power management issue/conflict??
Trick is if I keep my battery charge above 60-65% it's fine......get below that and the trouble start.....weird. hvaing said that seems to drain faster than normal also. My hope are pinned on battery solution once Rajnus trys it.
Although not looking foward to taking phone apart to replace it
Today after the first symptom I rebooted phone and after reboot my battery was at 14%. It looks like to me that we have constant drain but system some how is not registering it properly. I will restart after every 10%
Edit: 85% ->reboot -> 57%

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one suffering from this issues as well. I replaced my screen and digitizer about 3 months ago and never had issues. Last week I updated from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 (and 4.4.4 shortly after) and started having the same issues where there would be ghost touches on the screen once I got to around 70% battery, loss of radio/signal, and when I would restart the phone, I would lose majority of the battery charge. I tried flashing stock back on the phone and the problem still is present.
