Guys, the Note 3 is the best Android superphone for being able to read the display outside in direct sunlight / daylight.
My Galaxy S4 sucks in comparison and I need my next phone to be better.
Has anyone compared the S5 to the Note 3 in this regard? Is the S5 just as good as the Note 3?
Looks like the S5 tested better in sunlight than the current leader in this category, the Note 3.

There are many more important and challenging issues for displays than just pixel resolution. For the Galaxy S5, Samsung has instead concentrated on improving the Maximum Brightness, Screen Reflectance, performance in High Ambient Light, Absolute Color Accuracy, Viewing Angles, display power efficiency, and running time on battery. We’ll cover these issues and much more, with in-depth comprehensive display tests, measurements and analysis that you will find nowhere else.

The S5's AMOLED screen retains its full HD resolution while getting a very slight size increase to 5.1 inches, and it looks as sharp and as vibrant as ever, with strong colours and good viewing angles. We didn't get a chance to pit it against the Barcelona sun, but it seemed bright enough to cope with outdoor use.
Hi there,
After 3-4 months with my yotaphone 2 I want to share my experiences with it's and other display technologies...
Yotaphone 2 has a very good OLED display. I directly compared it to Samsung Galaxy S4 / S5 and my new Xiaomi Redmi Pro 32GB/3GB version (not to confuse with Xiami Redmi Note 3/4 pro which use IPS LCDs).
S4 / S5 / Yotaphone 2 seem to have the same display panel. Colors and overall image match 99% (they are great). Just the S4 and S5 seem to allow a higher brightness than the yotaphone 2 does. On the other hand yotaphone 2 allows you to go very dark while keeping a good image quality.
Compared to Xiaomi Redmi Pro (chinese OLED) the redmi pro doesn't convince too much. Especially green colors on the redmi pro look somewhat synthetic. Red is OK but not as embracing as on Yotaphone 2. Other colors seem similarily good.
Furthermore (not that much hardware related) yotaphone 2 has a perfect automated brightess control. The best i've seen yet. With S4/S5 and redmi pro I always need to fine-tune in some situations because of auto brightess reacting slowly or brightness going max when not needed.
Maybe someone here or out there on the interwebz cares about comparison of OLED technology displays. They are NOT the same. My opinion:
Most tests / reviews only state that there's LCD and OLED with some of their pros and cons. That's all. But of course there are differences in OLED technologies. Chinese OLED's like that of the redmi pro tend to being not that advanced. They feature sharp image and high resolution but color / black and overall image quality don't match advanced OLEDs like samsung's I would say they reach about 80% of samsung's / yotaphones display quality.
Nice info. Thanks for sharing.
On my side I have to admit that I am deeply impressed with some feautures of my Yotaphone 2, being one the AMOLED display. Although it is not as good as the one I had with my Samsung Note 4, something quite expected, as the other one was one of the top displays with better pixel density and area.
The only complain for the panel might be the maximun brightness that it is also lower to top samsung ones and that the display shows some more reflections that those, making it a little worse on direct sunlight. I also tend to believe that this display tends to be a little more energy conservative than the top Samsung ones, as with a smaller battery, I usually get better screen time than with those Samsung top models (which have a better/bigger screen, but also a bigger battery).
Anyway, it is one of the top displays I've seen.
Best regards,

“The Galaxy S8 is the most innovative and high-performance Smartphone display that we have ever lab tested, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.”
What’s New;
The Galaxy S8 has the following major new display performance features and display functions, which we cover in detail throughout the article:
· A new larger 5.8 inch Full Screen Display that fills almost the entire front face of the Galaxy S8 from edge-to-edge. Its display is 18% larger in screen area than the Galaxy S7, with almost exactly the same width but 17% taller.
· The Home button and Navigations buttons are now incorporated within the touchscreen display.
· A new display form factor with a taller height to width Aspect Ratio of 18.5 : 9 = 2.05, which is larger than the 16 : 9 = 1.78 on the Galaxy S7 (and widescreen TVs) because the display now has the same overall shape as the entire phone.
· It is taller in Portrait mode and wider in Landscape mode. This provides extra space for Notifications and for displaying multiple windows and content.
· A new 3K Higher Resolution 2960 x 1440 Quad HD+ display with 570 pixels per inch.
· Support for 4 Screen Modes and 3 Standard Color Gamuts with High Absolute Color Accuracy based on our extensive lab measurements.
· A new full 100% DCI-P3 Color Gamut and Digital Cinema mode that is also used for 4K Ultra HD TVs, so the Galaxy S8 can display the latest high-end 4K video content.
· The DCI-P3 Gamut is 26 percent larger than the Rec.709 Gamut that is used in 2K Full HD TVs.
· The Galaxy S8 is the first Smartphone to be certified by the UHD Alliance for Mobile HDR Premium, which allows it to play all of the same 4K High Dynamic Range content produced for 4K UHD Premium TVs.
· A new Video Enhancer that provides HDR-like Expanded Dynamic Range for photos and videos that don’t have HDR coding.
· A new record high Peak Brightness with over 1,000 nits, which improves screen visibility in very high Ambient Light, and provides the high screen Brightness needed for HDR.
· A new user adjustable White Point with RGB Color Balance slider controls that can change the Color of White for the Adaptive Display screen mode.
· New front and back Dual Ambient Light Sensors for significantly improved Automatic Brightness settings.
· A new Night Mode with a Blue Light Filter that allows the user to adjust and reduce the amount of blue light from the display for better night viewing and improved sleep.
What’s Improved;
The Galaxy S8 also has the following improved display performance features and display functions, which we cover in detail throughout the article:
· Higher Screen Brightness from 5% to 19%.
· Larger Native Color Gamut with 113% DCI-P3 for better displayed Colors in High Ambient Light.
· Improved Absolute Color Accuracy.
· Improved Viewing Angle performance.
· Enhanced configurable Edge Display for the curved side screens.
· Enhanced Always On Display mode operated with IC hardware rather than App software.
· Enhanced Personalized Auto Brightness Control.
· Enhanced Image Processor for Adaptive Dynamic Brightness and Contrast Range Expansion.
· Enhanced Performance Modes and Power Saving Modes.
· Stronger curved Gorilla Glass 5 protecting the display.
Galaxy S8 OLED Display Technology Shoot-Out!
-------
Can't wait for the Note 8 "Great" (a.k.a. 옹호) to show up and show off its display along with other expected innovations!
Great to get a better perspective on the changes made, undoubtedly the best screen to grace a smartphone.
Very much looking forward to shipment day......?

Even though I'm looking very much at the GS8+ because of availability, the article doesn't even compare to other competitors especially being the Xperia XZ Premium. The XZ Premium is literally built with a 4K HDR screen and it's one of the most well renowned top flagship features. For DisplayMate to not even mention it kind of discredits what it grades any way if it does not compare other flagships.

They are comparing it to their previous model, that's what most people care about as Samsung panels have been the best for quite some time. It's to show improvements over the last gen screens. You can always compare the review score between different devices yourself. The S8 is the highest rated mobile screen they have tested. Sony and LG etc are not really competitors, they don't sell enough phones. Apple is Samsung's major competition as they are both on top, by a huge margin. Most are losing money not making it. So they are doing the review for the largest number of potential consumers.
4k screens on a phone are very good for one thing, VR. Outside of that there isn't much difference at all, other than loss of performance and battery life. I would appreciate the higher res as an option myself though because I enjoy VR.
4k is wasted on smaller sized TV's even, unless you're sitting a few inches away from it. It's best for 50 inch and above screens. Over 60 is preferable if sitting a reasonable distance away.
If another phone takes top spot this year then they will probably compare that to the Samsung...
Hey guys i'm looking to buy a new phone (currently using the nexus 5x) and i've got my sights on the G6 or S7 Edge . The phones will be european versions so H870 and G935F . I would like to know if the G6 has any issues like bootlooping or overheating , how is the overall performance , battery life in general information of the device what you like in it and what you dislike . My personal points for upgrading are battery life coz i get a max of 3hrs sot with lets say an hour of gaming listening to music and messenger and the performance because the 5x throttles hard . Does the H870 come with anything like amp or wireless charging ?
Great hardware, ok software, very late updates
If you want screen on time I would look at Lenovo P2. 12-13 SOT, SD625 SOC, 5100Mah battery and amoled screen and over 4 days on standby for approx £225. Ok the camera is pants but everything else is great. G6 looks great but battery standby performance is rubbish. Either root it or gamble that Oreo will sort this out. S7 good phone but those bezels are sooo big and the edge is a bit of a gimmick. Have you considered Honor 9? Specs look good. I chose G6 H870DS over S7 but now wish I had bought a Lenovo P2. Good luck.

From Huawei i looked up to the P10 but i see on the xda threat that it has minor custom rom, kernel, apps community but its a viable option . Im looking for good screen on time not the best but good enough for lets say 5 hours sot that will get me easily through the day also im looking for good performance in games and the wide angle lens seems sweet.
I make 5 h SOT easy , and i had the huawei p10 plus and i can say , LG G6 has better gaming performance than the p10 plus , i run pes2018 with no problem , the huawei had very lag so i couldn't play it
The camera is desapointing , the p10 is much better ( my opinion , dont judge me )
The p10 also looks faster in everyday use , opening apps , switching apps etc...
Interesting, I own a S7 Edge (Snapdragon) and a G6, but not the models you've listed running stock. I'll point out the main stuff first for the G6 that you wanted to know:
Bootloop: Not yet, but afraid of. I bought the G6 because it was ~ 250usd!
Overheat: No overheat for my G6.
Performance: My G6 is smooth... I don't think the Exynos is better than that.
Battery: The G6 has an odd idle battery drain, heavy use is fine. I get 5~7 SOT with heavy use, but seems like no one else gets 7 hours.
Wireless Charging: Seems like only US/Canada and G6+ come with that. S7 Edge has it.
Amp: Do you mean for audio output? The G6 without quad-dac is for low impedance headphones, like very low... the Exynos S7 Edge doesn't have the same internal DAC as I have so I can't comment on that.
I think you'll get used to the G6 faster than the S7 from the Nexus 5x. The navbar, the fingerprint sensor, closer to stock android than Touchwiz... but you may want something different .
For extra stuff, read below
LG G6:
Wide-angle (but check the 2.09 vs 2.01mm lens : https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg6/comments/7gqln4/lg_g6_is_produced_with_2_versions_of_wide_angle/)
Different aspect-ratio, may see black bars for 16:9 picture/videos
FM Radio
Navigation bar
IPS Display -> Screen retention only (no nav buttons/status bar burn-in)
Power button is at the back (odd if new to LG G series)
Fingerprint at the back like the 5x
S7 Edge:
Better front and back camera
Wireless charging
Vivid screen colors and deep blacks
Screen burn-in
Custom roms from xda? it seems to have great support for your model
Rumored 3rd year of update as the rumored Oreo update for the S6
Hardware buttons, my home button has a weird click noise now.
Curved screen, this is gorgeous but I don't like to watch videos on it, especially the subtitles that goes with the curve and it is hard to get and apply a screen protector that covers the entire thing!
Anyways, hope it helps
The G6 is in my opinion a good all round phone and does most things very well. It will easily get you through the day with 5 hours SOT but will need recharging every night. I have never had any issues with the phone overheating, lagging or crashing. The phone is very well built and it’s quality is in a different league to the G5. Personally this is the best smartphone camera I have used and the wide angle lens is a useful addition. The screen and the lack of bezels are what attracted me this phone along with the fact that it cost me half the original price 3 months after its launch.
What annoys me most is the fact that LG are very slow to update with security patches and more importantly android updates. There is a well known problem with poor standby battery drain in Nougat that some other manufacturers have addressed. Losing 15-20% of battery overnight is rubbish and we are hoping Oreo might improve this. LG sell a lot less phones than Samsung or Apple and have less resources/staff to develop products and update firmware. So whilst they are sorting Oreo for th V30 and developing the G7 we might have to wait well into 2018 for a G6 Oreo update. I so hope I am wrong!

Very useful information ! I looked at the G6 because the S7 Edge is getting 2 years old in about 3 month and the G6 is basically on par with the S7 Edge for specs and i see it as ''more future proof'' than the S7 Edge because of the design and dual camera setup . My only concern is the bootloop and that i saw reviews of the G6 having inconsistent performance and getting pretty hot , also because a friend of mine has the G5 idk if the G6 is even comparable to the G5 but he had a world of trouble with it 6 months into owning it he had to sent it in for a screen replacement then a battery replacement also it fragmented his data once. All I want is a better phone than the 5x with better battery and some kind of "future proof".

Yeah I agree that the G6 looks more future proof with the design.
For the bootloop I'm not sure because I'm new to LG, I made sure to buy somewhere that LG would offer a warranty.
Your friend's case seems to be an immense trouble hahaha, he probably hates LG by now lol
Anyways, better phone overall is subjective so I can't decide for you with that , even if the 5x is from 2015.
Edit: And the batteries from both should in general be better than the 5x

Really not sure what to tell you about that...
Both have high resolution displays (QHD and QHD+), but I think the G6 has crisper images without looking at the ppi thing. Make sure to turn on QHD (1440p) for the S7 Edge! It is FHD (1080p) by default on Nougat. Just go to Display -> Screen Resolution.
Brightness I don't know, they both seem bright enough... for anything?
The S7 Edge has a little green tint near the 2 edges (left and right). With adaptive display on, the white is more white than the LG, the black is always more black, greater contrast, The colors are saturated. You can change the settings if you find it too vibrant by going to Display -> Screen mode.
The G6 has a cold display (blue tint everywhere). Colors are less vibrant compared to the S7 Edge. If you want, you can try going to accessibility -> vision -> screen color ajustment, tap on manual and slide a bit down the circle for higher contrast. It supports HDR, but seems to be useless for me as I don't use it at all.
The red on the G6 is like the red from a regular ballpoint pen that I was not used to. On the S7 Edge the red is a little bit orange which seems to be normal? The blue and green are similar, only that the S7 Edge's color is always more vibrant/popping to my eyes.
My opinion: I really don't mind which one I use, I have seen way worse screens.
Other issues that I have seen in real life (not on mine)
S7 Edge: Pink vertical line, Burn-in on the status bar
G6 : White bleed
In the end, I think the best thing to do if you have time, is go to a shop that has the S7 Edge and the G6 as a demo, take some time to compare those 2 if you are still focused on those 2, experience with those, and then choose the one you like .
Feel free to ask more questions if you want
Side note:
Are you planning to use emulators (NDS, PSP) on your device? I find the LG's display size better for those, more space for the controls. Also, I don't feel comfortable using an OLED because the controls may damage the display...
I'm waiting for my G6 to be delivered.
I did have a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus....which was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC on every level...battery life, performance etc....definitely beats the G6 in every way possible.
BUT, I cracked the screen on my S8...so sold it on Ebay and advertised it with the cracked screen and I had 51 bids and it soled for £400.00 !! AMAZING!
So I Bought a brand new LG G6 on Ebay for £260....lol can't fault the bargain!
Last LG I owned was the G3..which was awesome, even though the G6 screen is small compared to S8 Plkus...i'm hoping its gonna be a good phone anyway.

Where did you find the PS2 emulator ? I tried the Nintendo Gamecube one and it wasn't great for both of my devices. PPSSPP with vulkan support works very nicely and Drastic for NDS is always good, even for lower end devices

Better autofocus I don't know, they both focus on the right thing but what I've notice is that the S7 edge is faster at focusing. By the way, something that I forgot to mention is that the S7 can have a sony or a samsung sensor. I have the sony one.
