As I sit here and wait for 2.2.2 for my N1, it occurs to me I know nothing about the OTA process. A quick search of XDA reveals some of the same questions but few answers. Here's some things I'd like explained:
- How does the rollout process work?
- Are they controlled by HTC or Google or Tmobile?
- How does the selection of IMEIs work?
- How are the carriers involved in the distribution process?
- Is country of residence a factor?
- Does the update process work faster over WiFi? Or maybe require a cellular data connection?
- What does *#*#CHECKIN#*#* do exactly?
- What does clicking Settings...About Phone...System Updates do?
- Is the signing and structure of the update package understood?
- Would I get an OTA if I had no cellular data plan (only WiFi)?
Can anyone point me to a thread/page/wiki that has these answers?
To the best of my knowledge:

Google puts the update on their server, your phone checks in for updates every once in a while. If the Google servers tell your phone there is an update, it downloads it and prompts you to install it.

No one knows for sure. Seemingly random unless you have one of the "Holiday" Nexus Ones which seem to get preferential treatment to update first. Not always the case though.

Aside from the data being downloaded across their network, the carriers are not involved in any way with the Nexus One's update distribution.

I don't believe so. It goes off your IMEI and whether Google has chosen you.
- Does the update process work faster over WiFi? Or maybe require a cellular data connection?

That depends on the speed of your wifi or 3G connection. It is like downloading any other file off the internet (wifi will probably be faster).
- What does *#*#CHECKIN#*#* do exactly?

It forces your phone to check Google's servers for an update. But, if your IMEI isn't in the approved pool that the update is being sent to, it will NOT cause your phone to get the update ahead of time. IMO, the checkin code is worthless as you will almost always see the update file posted here long before your phone will tell you there is an update.
- What does clicking Settings...About Phone...System Updates do?

That only lists updates your phone has already downloaded and are ready to apply. It does not check for new updates.

The wiki is located in a link at the top, labeled appropriately enough "WIKI".
It may not have these specific answers, but is an excellent place to go before asking any questions here.
Oh, and one more thing. You have posted this in the wrong forum. This forum is not for questions. The forum labeled "Nexus One Q&A" would have been the appropriate forum to start this thread in.
I have a korean nexus and it got updates which slighty different from stock rom, i think it maded by kt itself, not google.
My opinion is thats because its a operator model. And yours t-mobile nexuse one wouldnt be one of the first wholl recieve ota.
Btw my korean nexus stll didnt recieved FRG83D
There are no operator models in the US, only Vodafone in Europe and KT in Korea have them.
The updates of the operator ones still come from Google, but they're delayed for testing/modification by the networks.

Curious: Why, for example, sense'd phones can have "check for updates" button, and we have to just stare and wait?
Cheers!
Because HTC decided that's how they wanted it.

Yes, but I can't find any reason to NOT give the option to manually chceck for updates. I had that option in stock android 2.1 on the Milestone, so it can't be to difficult if Moto Europe lazy devs could do that. Am I missing something or it's just illogical?
Hm. Maybe google didn't want hteir servers to be DDoS'd when new update arrives

Hi Rusty, how do define operator models? I have FRG83D installed! Before that I had FRF91 (Vodafone)! Is my phone still a operator model? In which way does it effect the OTA process?
Unless you've deliberately made the effort to switch to the untouched Google firmware, you'll still have the Voda variant.
What this means is you will receive updates much later than the Google bought handsets, if you tried to install the 2.2.2 update (FRG83G), you'll find that it will fail.

I've unlocked the bootloader and installed FRG83D. Prior to that I had FRF91 2.1 Vodafone Version!
Got ya. You are on par with the Google bought phones then.

Thanks Rusty!
it's really a hard work to wait OTA with google's official version. So I can't wait and just flash a lot of vendor room from the XDA.
the "checkin" seemed to force the phone to check update...
I've rooted my FRG83D, and received my 2.2.2 yesterday, but failed to go through the update due to not found carhome.apk which I deleted manually...
Hi all, can't seem to find the answer anywhere, whats the situation with Google Wallet in the UK for Nexus 4?
From what I can tell it seems like it is available for other devices but not the Nex 4, is that right?

I've yet to see it as available for any stock unrooted device in the UK.
Yeah, as is often the way I found my answer shortly after posting. Is not available at all yet in the UK but Googles UK URL misleadingly uses the Google Wallet page from the USA site.
Hope it comes soon, think I'd use it quite a lot.

Received a new update today. Using a G920I on Singtel network. Any thoughts?

I was on the COH8 firmware before update. Currently residing in Singapore.
Just installed the update and booted my phone. Seems to have better RAM management and a new app installed called Samsung Gear. Will update thread on whatever changes found.
There's battery optimisation/"doze" feature too

I haven't gotten any updates on my Galaxy S6 sm g920I. :/ Currently running, G920IDVUDOI2.
Another change I saw was that the icons of grouped apps and Smart Manager have curved edges that are similar to the Note 5 icons.

While using the Phone Info app, it says it's from, or was made from Vietnam. However, my original CSC code is from Papua New Guinea/ NZ.

Running the same G920I and DOI2 on T-Mobile and don't have the update either...would I get it OTA or would I have to use samsung software to update it via PC?

You can try updating it via the PC. The update may not be available for some variants of G920I.

I updated this new firmware using Odin. I was tired of waiting.
The only other phones I've had are the Samsung Vibrant & Note II and I'm kind of hoping you guys can clear this up for me.
What is the difference between the different "G920I" versions. I understand the difference between the G920 variants (I/T/V/etc..) made for specific carriers/regions but I don't understand what the different variants of the G920I mean (which have different build numbers).
I am looking here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G920I/
Can any of these firmwares be flashed on any G920I version? I thought the G920I version would be the same internationally but I'm not sure why some devices are being updates and others are not...can someone clarify?
Thanks.
I'm getting 4g speeds VIA T-Mobile USA when I flashed to G920IDVU3DOJ6_G920IXSA3DOJ6_XSA (Australia), I used to get LTE when I was in G920IDVU2COF8. Is that a problem?

Just the icon most likely. EU roms show 4g instead of LTE.
The update brings up a new feature "rich communication", also installed Samsung gear app.... Other than that I'm still looking out for new stuff.

What were you on previously (mainly wondering if my engineering 7.0 will be able to update) and where are you located?
Edit just saw Westbrook in your description, is that still accurate?

they replied, not really understanding i had a s7 ACTIVE, or that Nougat was on my phone ..
althou this was a few weeks back, as ive been on the leaked Nougat.... but thought i would email them anyhows !!
but they never replied back after stating that i had the Active, was on nougat, and that i had followed links from their site, and the google play store had sttated not compitable on my version too ..
hope they do get it sorted thou.,.. very much liked it !
even tried to get it via a backup from MM, but didnt work .
The exact response I received too. I've even use Samsung's main contact us page, still no response.
Even my wife's s7 edge can't see kids mode since the nougat update.

Correction, the s7 edge does see the app but only in the galaxy apps store. Version is 6.0.28
Now how to get a copy of it of the phone.... hmmm
Spent time with Samsung live chat and they connected to my phone. "I check information and your device is not compatible, a update to the app will allow you to download from the Play Store"
Contacted the Kids Mode support team again, probably one of the slowest response rates out there but still nothing.
I'm trying to understand why the Official Samsung TouchWiz Home app on the Google Play Store is not compatible with my S8+. The following article mentions that there is a new update available:
http://www.androidauthority.com/touchwiz-home-update-lag-galaxy-s8-783442/
Is this a region specific issue? Is anyone in Canada able to do the update?

Thanks for the suggestion, that is always an option. TouchWiz Home is currently behind two versions on my device. I should be getting the June security update soon. I will check to see if it gets updated then. In the mean time, I was hoping someone from Canada could confirm if they have the same issue that I have.
I'm in the same boat. Also says not compatible.

You won't get it with June update. Btw I can download it through play store using Galaxy S6 and S8 Port rom.
Mine says the same on the play store, pretty messed up. On the latest version of TW home they have fixed the horrible lag when opening and closing the swipe up or down app drawer. everything seems to run just a little bit smoother.
heres the latest apk for those who are looking for it.
The update came in and it's working now. I wonder if Samsung may have been staggering the updates or there was some kind of delay caused by the play store.
For some reason, shortly after I did the update it went back to not being compatible and it has been that way since. It appears to still be the same version that I currently have but I wonder what will happen when the next update comes.
