If stock ROM/recovery you can still flash an OTA through recovery. There is an option there for OTA update. You have to have fastboot/adb set up and working on a PC. You cannot flash a full image, but you can flash an OTA. If that fails or you can't get it to work, then try a factory reset from recovery.

Well, then you are not SOFT bricked as your thread title suggests. With just a minimal amount of reading you would have found that boot looping + no access to recovery = BLOD. Especially when the bootloader is locked. There are literally dozens of threads on this, and it is a dead end. Your friend is out of luck.

Thanks all, Mod plz close thread. Phone is dead.

hair dryer?

have you tried the hairdryer trick yet? focus the heat in the region of the back of the phone between the camera and the fingerprint reader. blast it with heat for 3-4 minutes and see if it trips off the big cluster and allows it to boot
Alternatively, I've discovered that instead of using a hair dryer, which completely roasts the phone and makes it hard to hold without using oven mitts during this process, I've used an incandescent lightbulb. It's faster and far more focused as to where it applies heat, again, while the phone is on/bootlooping, just touch the lightbulb against the metal back in the area between the camera and the fingerprint depression... with a 75w bulb it works in a matter of seconds.

I just started having this same issue.
I can't get into recovery from the bootloader in order to perform section 13. Once hit recovery, it's back to looping boot screen with white Google text.
Just got finished with Google phone support. They're sending me a new device. It must be a hardware failure.
Background: I got OTA notification on Friday night. I downloaded and hit install. Then after a while it said there was an upgrade error, and to please try again. But it was going to have to download the 1+ GB OTA file again, so I just said screw it, i'll do it later. Here am I 2 days later with a broken phone. Thinking this has to be related.

I am hoping to collect enough data to figure out a solution for all effected.
is your BL locked and device encrypted?
When you try to load recovery, does it ask for password?
try entering your last google account email password if so.

Hi Heisenberg,
I ran into this problem today with my phone stuck on Google screen. I tried to use your guide and put my phone in recovery but it just goes back to rebooting and just shows the "Google" logo so if I can't get the phone into recovery then I won't be able to use your guide right? Is these any other way to solve this problem or am I screwed?
Also how can this problem be prevented in the future if I got new phone under warranty? Do I root and flash pure Nexus ROM and backup images?
Thanks,

Hello... Try to look here:

For your second question, it's hard to tell... Making regular backups may help protecting your datas, but can't help your new phone to start acting crazy...
I have been doing weekly backups to my pc. I backup my TWRP, TBU, Super Backup, DCIM and download directories.

Any ideas are any solution when I have custom rom?
EDIT: Not needed, seems that wife phone has motherboard problem because now it will stuck in TWRP screen.
I am pretty sure I had this problem before. Actually within hours of purchasing and rooting. Lol go into fastboot and install factory images. If you were able to get into recovery you could use adb to oem unlock.. but that doesn't sound like an option.
My phone died last night in a bootloop death. Thankfully here in the UK we have a 2 year warranty so Huawei are taking it back. I mentioned "bootloop issue" and the tech guy stopped asking the standard stuff and just sent me a returns bag.
Try this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/confirmed-hardware-defects-nexus-6p-t3610405
Quickly enable bootloader unlocking, then follow the tutorials already known for 4-core recovery
Well I've now got a different phone back from Huawei as they told me they no longer have replacement motherboards available.

Hello... Try sideloading a full OTA of your choice from here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota#angler
It needs to be newer than the installed version. Not sure it will solve your issue though. Maybe someone else will chime in with a better solution...
If nothing works, RMA your device.
Good luck...
Thanks for the advice.
I tried to manually flash OTA but it falied because of the locked bootloader.
I am not sure if there is anyone could point me to do it via ADB. I tried using ADB but the phone is not recognized by my computer yet.

Hey...
Reboot into Bootloader. Select recovery mode with the volume rocker and press power.
Once you see the Android guy laying down with his belly opened, press power and tap volume up once.
On the menu select: apply update from ADB
From here type in a command prompt:
adb sideload "name of the full OTA zip you downloaded without quote"
Supposing you have prior knowledge with ADB. Let me know if something is not clear here...
Good luck...
I finally get ADB recognized Nexus 6p. But the ota stop flash at 46%. failed to read command: No error.

Probably so. There is one guy who found a 6P with a shattered screen for sale and paid a local repair shop to have the motherboard swapped out. Claims it cost him less than USD $100 but he is in South Korea. You're probably better off cutting your losses and finding another phone... after Huawei tells you NO three times.

just a follow-up to somebody might see encounter the same thing. I was not able to fix the phone.
With a locked bootloader and "encryption unsuccessful" page, you might try warranty first. If that does not work, you might want to take rescue OTA from google and flash it in recovery via " install update via ADB".
Please be aware that rescue OTA is different from system image and should be flash via ADB in recovery.
Good luck.

Here are Rescue OTA. One would need to flash it with ADB in recovery. https://developers.google.com/android/ota
The following one is firmware/factory image. One would need to flash it with fastboot while in bootloader mode : https://developers.google.com/android/images
Use the correct zip file according to your flashing mode ( recovery or bootloader)

Hello!
I have the same "Encryption unsuccessful" issue. It happened many times recently. First I replaced the battery, because it produced early sudden shutdown at 30-40%, and could run only for a few hours from 100% to 40%.
The new battery is enough for 30-40 hours as I use it, and can operate the phone down to 1-2% before shutting down.
But if I have to restart the phone, the encryption unsuccessful problem still comes up randomly after battery replacement. I can restart several times without problem, then randomly just fails. Mostly after software updates I guess... I have stock firmware, stock rom, etc. the only thing was made that I have installed TWRP, and wiped user data. Hope that helps. Can it be the defect of the emmc ? If so, how shall I diagnose it?
I'm very newbie android user, I changed from Windows Phone ( ) only a few months ago...
The question is what could cause the Encryption unsuccessful error? It's interesting, that if I enter any random numbers as unlock code, the phone tells that it appears to be valid, but unfortunately cannot decrypt data.
So I would like only to disable forced encryption, maybe that helps. Could someone point me to the right direction about what exactly should I do? Is it enough to flash a modded kernel to disable encryption? I don't want to root, or experiment with custom roms and I would stick to the factory firmware as much as I can, but without encryption of corse...
thanks!

No relief for Sprint hard-bricked phones?

So it was only a matter of time before I managed to hard brick my phone. Wouldn't you know it, I'm with one of the only carriers to not have a KDZ available?! #%^&^!
I was trying to update TWRP, but after flashing the phone went to the red triangle screen, then LG screen, then turned off. When I rebooted it went into what looked like Fastboot, but I cannot get it to return to that state now. I pull the battery, do the factory reset process, then get the red triangle, LG screen, then off. I can get the download screen, but that does me absolutely no good without a usable TOT or KDZ. FML.
What options do I have? I'm on a leased device with no way to restore with LGUP (which in my opinion is utter horse $hit). Last I remember, there was some progress being made on a TOT file, but I can't find the thread anymore. @me2151, @Team DevDigitel, @SaintZ93 -- any help, guys???
:crying:
So assuming you can't get to TWRP, right?
I had something similar to this and just kept trying to reboot recovery. Once rebooted into recovery I was able to plug into a computer and force it into fastboot mode.
Wish I had more stuff to help with.

No TWRP, No fastboot...just red triangles, LG Screen, then darkness, lol. Using the Volume Down/Power method results in the same...red triangle, LG, darkness. If only Sprint would provide a dang KDZ.
No worries though, man. I contacted Sprint tech support and they are sending me a new phone. I just played like I didn't know why it wouldn't boot and they immediately processed an advanced exchange. I should be getting a replacement V20 either tomorrow (hopefully) or Monday at the latest.
I'll probably still hang out in the forums, in case files are needed. But yeah, no more root for this guy.

It's ok. I've already got them processing an advanced exchange. It's probably for the best since I want to be able to update OTA again and didn't really see much benefit in rooting at this point. The ROMs I was using were pretty close to stock anyway.

That would be nice, but I can't get adb anymore. I've tried, but the device is not recognized by adb OR fastboot via the 'devices' command. The only thing I can get is the firmware update screen, but that's useless on Sprint.

Hello Folks,
Stumped upon the infamous boot loop with my Nexus 6P and unfortunately I am unable to bypass it since my OEM is locked !! I did try heating up my device to boot it up and enable unlocking, but no luck. Can any one suggest any other way I can unlock the OEM device and fix the issue. I don't mind loosing data, since i had backed up few months back, it was running Oreo 8.1 without any issues (the last update from Google), any help / suggestion please.

You flash the OS while in fastboot mode if you're talking about stock, which it sounds like you are already on. And if you are you just need to boot to get into developer option to enable unlocking your bootloader and then flash the modified TWRP and workaround zip by osm0sis.

tmobile s8 boot loop-ish

hey all,
Saturday morning a wake up to my alarm on my phone (SM-G950U T-Mobile Stock since new) and turn off the alarm and proceed to check email and scroll social medias. A few minuted later phone turns off and starts boot looping. Occasionally it would boot to home screen and i could unlock it but then maybe 30 seconds later it would start boot loping again. Now it either just boot loops or boots straight to recovery . I have tried flashing current firmware in case it was corrupted and i have tried accessing it through ADB. I know for a fact USB debugging is on because I just used abd to pull wifi passwords 2 weeks ago, but when I try to [ abd devices] if comes up as unauthorized and I cannot proceed. I know everyone will suggest a factory reset, but I am hoping someone has a trick for extracting files. I dont care about most on my phone, but I would like to save the pics from my GF and I trip this past august. Apparently I didnt have my photo library set to sync to cloud -_-
thanks
-chip
update: it appears there is a pattern. it boot loops or boots to recovery (after a blue failed system update screen) 99% of the time. the 1% it boot fully and then crashes is only when battery is 0% . it for some reason is only trickle charging and isnt getting enough juice when it does boot fully to stay on . But if i leave it charging a while it will then only boot loop or boot to recovery. Strange...any way I had enough time this past boot to reauthorize usb debug.....wish me luck with adb
....nevermind. still shows up as unauthorized

Cheapest fix in my opinion. I saw another thread a guy dropped his. Now detects 9008 how to fix. More than likely a phone wont just not boot. Or lose programming unless a hardware issue. So if it was just running and quit. Not modding stuff really. More likely than not its gonna be some form of software. But hardware.

Replaced Daughter board and battery. No improvement :/ bummer
the only time i can get it back into recovery is after a "successful" flash with odin. by successful i mean that it says it worked but it just continues to boot loop or boots to recovery. attached is a picture of the info i get in recovery every time. hope someone can shed some light in the issue. im using my old phone so i dont feel pressured to call the data a loss and try a factory reset just yet....my old phone is a POS though

Yea some one tried to root it using the edl safestrap thread. Only wsy to fix it is filled the steps and reflash jrkruses pie rom. One of my mother boards are in the same state. That's the only way dm verity fails. Is his rom method.
There's some easy to flash a cache wipe in Odin but I hadn't found it yet. I have 2 mother boards and one is identical. I flash this stock and lose download or recovery. but the errors you show are only from doing that edl safestrap
Ill be honest..i have no idea what you are talking about. Ive messed with the software with previous devices and never heard of safe strap. This one has been bone stock since I got it from Tmobile and i haven't attempt to flash anything until i had this issue. never tried to root it

https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-t3904613. This thread can help you at least get pie back up and running. I wouldn't mess with no more. I haven't had much luck with mine. But I did get it booting again
