root noob ? on a v20 - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hey all,
I have a TMobile v20. What will not work if I unlock the bootloader and root I assume Android pay won't work. Would banking apps? I came from the Nexus line or should I just wait for the T-Mobile update? I was also thinking about flashing the unlocked version.

If you root you lose the ability to use Android pay and other apps, but if you install magisk you can easily hide root from them ?

Will Custom ROM re-lock my phone?

I recently purchased an unlocked T-Mobile G2 that I am using on AT&T. If I install a custom ROM, will it re-lock the phone to T-mobile? If it does, is there an easy way to unlock it again?
Very Very Unlikely...

I Don't think so. Just install CWM (ClockWorkMode Recovery) and if you want , root it. Just follow the instructions at the Rom developers website.
There is nearly no chance that a unlocked phone could be locked again unless you change the hex values which you can't do it easily.

Sprint S7 unlocked: Is there a way to update it safely?

Long time reader...first time poster
I bought an unlocked sprint s7 from ebay and it works like a dream and i was wondering if there was a safe method to update the phone WITHOUT ruining the unlock that the seller put on the phone.
Current software is update PC5 and i would love to benefit from security and bug fixes in new releases.
Thanks in advance!

Most likely not a carrier unlock do to a unlocked padlock during boot animation as well as samsung pay not working due to software mods that im guessing made it unlocked in the first place. Thanks for the reply!

Bootloader unlock and sim unlock are two different things. You said it has an unlock pad on boot up screen. That means it's bootloader is unlocked. Which means if I am correct if it has a custom recovery you are unable to do future ota updates. Can and possibly brick your phone. You can flash a ton that has the new update no issues developers are usually fairly quick to update there rom on the latest ota.

Now my question is that since my phones bootloader is unlocked via custom software, would it be safe to root it and install custom roms that have the current updates? thanks

I can confirm that updating over OTA will NOT screw with the unlock of the device. If your samsung pay does not work i would disable knox with a package disabler app to receive samsung pay in you new updated state.
OTA update from PC5 to PH7 on unlocked phone went smoothly.
Thanks
I have a unlocked Sprint S7 but im outside of America, is there any way i can update without losing the unlock? i don't want to end with an expensive brick.
Im stuck in G930PVPU2APC5 and i can't receive OTA updates
I bought unlocked sprint s7 that I'm using with metro PCS, but it's not letting me update the profile and because of that I'm not getting the wifi hotspot option. How do I get it to work?
@ThaDunder : You must initially do it manually over samsung smart switch then OTA will work @zirnitra : Sadly wifi tethering is not working for me either...no idea how to fix it =/ must be a symptom of the unlocking like wifi calling

You can use wondershare mobilego to root the phone. The software has one-click root. This is the easiest way however the software also install a lot adds on your phone.
If you want to do the clean manual route...
1.You need to downgrade your phone to Kit-kat 4.4.2 NB1/NC1 .
2. Use towel root to root the phone.
3. Install safestrap or flash fire.
4. Flash the desire Lollipop rom via safestrap or flashfire.
You can find all the instruction and files in this post.
question after downgrading can i upgrade back to 5.0.1 or do i have to use a custom rom ?

You do not have to. There are stock rooting 5.0.1 roms. You can find them in here.

Don't know much about magisk on i-337. . I am not sure whether you need a unlocked bootloader to use magisk. I saw magisk on zenfone 2 though. Then again zenfone 2 bootloader can be unlocked. All the i377 BL are locked. Only the initial one (ADB, MDL) could be exploitable (not unlock).
My next phone gonna be something other then Samsung and something other then att for sure lol

Then you better be on T-mobile
Most smart phone make for US came with locked bootloaders.
To avoid that I bought international version. The problem with international phone on ATT network is that you can not get 4GLTE signal for mobile data. You can get either 3G or 4G based on your phone. ATT told me that only phone make for ATT network could get the 4GLTE signal.
I heard international phone can get 4GLTE signal on T-mobile network.

Anyone able to bootloader unlock?

Option is greyed out on mine ... it's a Google Store phone. purchased from Google specifically so I would be able to unlock.
And I can't. I'm p*ssed. Very unhappy.
Are you saying you can't check on the OEM unlocking option under Developer Options?
I just checked and I was able to do it.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's greyed/disabled.
and per Google, I have a VZW branded phone.
So now it's going back. $900 wasted.

Google Store. They are selling 3 models of Pixel 4 : unlocked, VZW locked, and Google Fi.
They sent me a VZW one.
I was able to unlock mine no problem. I bought the unlocked version from Google even though I'm on Verizon. I put my Verizon sim in, skipped all the setup, ticked to allow oem unlocking, rebooted to bootloader and unlocked no problem.
That's a bummer yo.

Are you just going to return and cancel or are they exchanging it for you?
That sucks..
For those who unlock. Do you use something for Google Pay? (That magisk thing?)
Also...do you know if device theft protection still works if stolen?
I recently tried to root my Pixel 2 but then I rolled back because I wasn't sure of these two things.

does this mean we can flash magisk root if we unlock the bootloader?

I haven't unlocked in years but I do read about it. I think you only need Magisk if you're going to root. Bootloader unlock only needs a kernel to bypass the unlock check. But since there are no kernels yet you can't use GP if you unlock the P4.
Until Google releases the factory images for the P4, it may be hard to install Magisk. Without TWRP, we need to use the boot image modification method. Unless you are competent enough to find and extract the boot.img from your phone, you will have to wait until the factory images are released to get your hands on it.
So while it is probably technically possible to root right now, the ave person that isn't an Android OS expert probably won't have the technical skills to do it.
To those asking ... yes, I bought from google store. They sent me the verizon variant instead of the unlocked variant.
re: google pay/etc (anything requiring safetynet), Magisk can provide root, and its Magiskhide component can hide that root from SafetyNet. Installing Xposed inside Magisk, however, cannot be hidden.
re: installing magisk if you unlock the bootloader - that's a yes.
Anyone in here extracted the boot.img from the factory image yet?
I'm on a mac right now so I was hoping to just download someone elses.
My OEM unlock is available. I'm waiting for root. The only thing I want right now is hotspot. I was hoping that since it's an unlocked phone that it would work straight out of the box. I've been with LG since the G4 and I've always bought mine unlocked and the hotspot works without having to go through Verizon and pay for the subscription. I'm on the old grandfathered unlimited data plan. I'd hate to have to return this phone and go with the G8 but I don't have internet where I live and I have to have hotspot.

You know w have root right? You don't need a custom recovery when you can use the patched boot method from magisk along with fastboot.

You can get it with the system images that are available from Google. It'd be hesitant to give you the one I downloaded in case you have one of the other 2 variants of the October release (this assumes that the boot.img's are even different which in not sure).
I got a tester device so it was already unlocked. I'm just waiting for TWRP before I start messing with it.

Sprint store pixel 4 (non xl)

OK so I'm posting this here because I'm eventually going to root and tweak many things (as I usually do) but this is my first pixel or Google phone of any kind.
A little background on myself. I'm always running a rooted phone (except for the last week or so) and have always ran an HTC device on the sprint network. I've done a bit of work on theming and creating skins in the past (it's been a while) but I've noticed that there isn't much need for that now that pretty much everything I'd create can be done easily with an Xposed or Magisk module.
Reason for this post.. With my current device being the Pixel 4 (not XL) that I bought from the sprint store (paid in full at time of purchase) I now have a device that's running Android 10 with no twrp and no custom rom. I want to go ahead and root but don't really need to with the exception that I want to access mobile hotspot but I don't even see a way to do that yet with the currently available Magisk modules.
I can figure out the current technique to get root access but thinking of waiting until custom recovery and roms are available but how will that be affected by carrier specific devices?

Is your bootloader locked or unlocked? You'll need to unlock that first then you can patch the boot.img file with magisk to root.

I don't know if you'll be able to do it on locked carrier versions. Magisk requires you to patch that boot image in order to root unless there's another method.

The phone must be SIM unlocked before the OEM bootloader unlock option will become active. If Sprint won't SIM unlock the phone for 50 days, then there is nothing he can do.
It's becoming more and more common for carriers to SIM lock all their phones and only unlock them after an extended period of time after activation. Verizon won't SIM unlock for 60 days. They do this to prevent unsold stock from being stolen and sold by the thieves.
