I recently purchased an unlocked T-Mobile G2 that I am using on AT&T. If I install a custom ROM, will it re-lock the phone to T-mobile? If it does, is there an easy way to unlock it again?
Very Very Unlikely...

I Don't think so. Just install CWM (ClockWorkMode Recovery) and if you want , root it. Just follow the instructions at the Rom developers website.
There is nearly no chance that a unlocked phone could be locked again unless you change the hex values which you can't do it easily.

I recently bought an unlocked vibrant off ebay.
Does unlocked mean that it's already rooted?
I'm also wondering how I would install custom roms on an unlocked phone...I've tried a few times already but doesn't work.

Unlocked does not mean rooted. It just means you can use it on any carrier you wish. To root download Z4Root from the Android Market. After that follow the Dev instructions to install your custom firmware.
Hi Guys,
I'm about to buy a Motorola Atrix 4G sim-unlocked phone here in India, through eBay. I got confirmation from the seller that it is an imported phone from US which has been unlocked for international carriers. I've a few questions now:
1. Does GB 2.3.4 come with an unlocked bootloader, so that I need not do anything to unlock it myself?
2. If no, then will I be able to unlock the bootloader using the method given in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
I can see that there is a lot of community support for this phone and I would love to root it and install custom ROMs on it. Please clarify me on the above points.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Karthik,
I have also bought through Ebay.
1. Does GB 2.3.4 come with an unlocked bootloader, so that I need not do anything to unlock it myself?
A) If the phone is sim unlocked than most probably it has unlocked bootloaded. You can check this by restarting the phone, if UNLOCKED is displayed at the top during booting, then its bootloaded has been unlocked.
2. If no, then will I be able to unlock the bootloader using the method given in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
A)I have used the same method for unlocking my phone.

Thanks for the reply. I do not see the UNLOCKED text while booting up. so probably the boot loader is still locked.
In the thread which you used to unlock, there is no step to root the phone after unlocking the boot loader. After unlocking, the next step is installing a custom recovery. So how do we root it? I don't want to explore multiple threads as the instructions are confusing. Please help!
Thanks in advance.

This is NOT TRUE..
Sim Unlock and Bootloader Unlock are different.
Bootloader Unlock will allow you to install any other firmwares. This will display Unlocked message on bootup.
SIM unlock will allow to use other carriers SIM card other than Orginal carrier.
For Ex. if you have ATT US Atrix, you wont be able to use it for other networks until you perform SIM unlock. This will not display Unlock message on bootup.

N00b questions
Few more n00b questions Please ignore my questions above. I've consolidated all of them below so that multiple replies can be avoided.
I've rooted and installed custom ROMs on my LG P500 for more than a year now and I'm quite familiar with the process. But this locked boot loader thing is really confusing me and there are so many threads with different methods. Really confused I've listed down all my questions below, pls help me:
1. Can I root my Atrix without unlocking the bootlaoder? I want to get rid of the so many AT&T apps as my phone is sim-unlocked and I don't need them here in India. This page from rootzwiki has a method to root a phone with locked bootloader. Can I follow this?
2. The same page has a method to unlock the bootloader. In that, it is mentioned that the SBF flashing need not be done if the phone runs gingerbread. The steps direct us to run the unlock command if we're on GB. But on all the methods here in XDA, the SBF flash method is mentioned even for GB 2.3.4 phones. This thread for example. which one to follow?
3. I'm planning to follow the above thread, but in that thread, there is no step to root the phone, after unlocking the bootloader. The next step given there is to install custom recovery. So what do I do to root it?
Please clarify these questions. Thanks in advance.

sorry for a bit of a thread hijack,
I'm going to be in India for a conference, can anyone recommend a prepay provider that works with AT&T Atrix and has reasonable data packs? Don't care about text/minutes, just need mobile data with decent speed & price. Bonus if it comes with a pony?

1.Rooting a phone is different to unlocking the bootloader. So yes when you root the boot loader will remain locked. Unless you use a script which automatically roots and also unlocks the boot loader.
2.I would follow the example thread
3. You can use this thread to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
I would recommend you read this thread…its for beginners but has all the information you'll need

Atrix 4g Unlocking and Upgrading.
Hi there guys!
I am planning to buy Atrix 4g through Ebay.
The listing on ebay says that the phone is unlocked?
I am pretty much new to all this and all that I wanna know how do I get rid of Motoblur without putting any custom roms.
PS I heard that Moto has released gingerbread but I am afraid if I update with Motorola Software Update, it will re lock the phone?
Hi
I use atrix in mumbai..
The phone which you will get from ebay will be sim unlocked...that means you can use indian sim cards on the phone
To get rid of all blur software i would suggest you to install a custom rom from the forums..for which you will need to unlock bootloader root your phone and install custom recovery
Youll find tutorials for these in the forums
Cheers!

Heya, I'm very new in the vast world of Android rooting and flashing and I've run into yet another problem trying to flash my N900A Note 3 variant. I finally got it SIM unlocked and rooted and just when I'm getting ready to flash I see something about bootloaders. I don't know how to check to see if it's locked but I'm more than certain it is. So, is there anyway to unlock the bootloader? I see people saying it can't be unlocked yet I see guides for unlocking them so really all I'm looking for is a straight answer.
And if I understand it right, Safestrap isn't something I want to do if it's not the 'real' thing, so if it can't be unlocked then I'll be looking into another phone. If I do, would it be better to get another Note 3 variant or the Sony Xperia z1s?
Thanks in advance.

Is it enough just to instal it through odin?
(Searched for instructions but couldn't find it.....)
Thanks....

Okay, I have a few questions on this subject.
Safestrap is a work-around a locked bootloader right? If I use it to flash a rom would there be that much of a difference?
If using safestrap pretty much the same thing then why do people still prefer to have unlocked bootloader?
Because I see guides to unlocking bootloaders, does this mean that it's just AT&T that won't let us unlock this phone version?
Sorry for the questions, I just want this stuff cleared up.

You can't change the kernel if your bootloader is locked, so safestrap only works with TW-based ROMs -- no cyanogenmod our other AOSP variants.
AT&T is one of the carriers that forces the OEMs to lock the bootloader. I believe Verizon is another one. No other carrier seems to care, or have enough power over the OEMs to force this.
Hello friends of the XDA community. I have a Sprint unlocked variant. I'm on T-Mobile, but after September's update, I got sim invalid message. I thought this would be an easy fix to downgrade back to the previous stock Pie Firware. So I went to the Essential website and downloaded the wrong firmware and flashed it, it was open market but I have a Sprint device. Now the device just bootloops every time I try to flash the correct firmware. When I try to flash the correct firmware, it says wiping data and than it starts transfering data and a second after it reboots and bootloops. Am I doomed? Thanks guys.
Open market works fine on Sprint devices. What did you download? Did you unlock your bootloader? Unlock critical?
Thank you so much for you help. I finally got it back up and running.

Maybe essential will release a fix in a few days for the relocked Sprint phones. Otherwise, if you wanted to unlock it yourself so you can run the latest update, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77532356&postcount=20 since it sounds like you already have your bootloader unlocked.
Do you mean bootloader or sim in terms of unlocking? Bootloader is fine. I'm sim locked.

With an unlocked bootloader, you can either root and flash sim-unlocked modemst images with dd, or downgrade the bootloader and use it to flash.

Yesterday, I flashed the international OOS in my TMO 6t then unlocked the bootloader and rooted it.
However I never SIM unlocked the device beforehand.
Can the device be sim unlocked with root access?
Additional question, what bad may happen flashing stock TMO branded OOS on my bootloader unlocked device?
What I've seen recommended is to use the MSM tool to flash back to T-mobile software and then request the SIM unlock.

I went international also, however I was already sim unlocked. You could just go back full TMO and sim unlock... Maybe I'm not sure. What process did you use to unlock the bootloader and root?

You would have to go back TMO version and request permanent unlock. T-Mobile can only do this or pay a third party to do it. When I got mine on release date I told TMO I was going overseas and gave me an unlock right away. The unlock app is not supported on the international version it'll give you an app not supported if you try to sideload it.

Okay lol just clarifying, but yeah only way is to go back to TMO stock rom and request the permanent unlock through the app after your imei has been whitelisted. As for flashing TMO rom on top of international, your best bet would be to use the TMO MSMtool to go back to stock.

No matter I'll never use it off TMO network anyway. But when I pay off the last $500 I'll swap back and unlock.
