Why is my LTE device displaying as HSPA+?

Hey guys. I Have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-I317M) and for some reason it fluctuates between HSPA+ and 3G signals rather than LTE. The device is originally locked to Rogers but I unlocked it and am now using it with MTS. I am running on jelly bean 4. 1.2 and CleanRom 4.0.5. Anybody have any ideas as to why I'm not getting LTE?

Are you still getting fast data speeds? All LTE is 3.9 g and hspa is like 3.6 g lol..

Since you only mentioned your phone model and not the important notion what your carrier is, what is it?

Yes I'm getting fast speeds but I can't help but wonder why this is happening. I mentioned that I'm with MTS so I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. I live in Canada so it's probably not familiar to you. They just started carrying S3's which are running on their LTE network and they show 4G at the top of them when activated rather than HSPA+.

Nope not familiar with Mts. That's correct.. it all depends on the towers u are near .. if they haven't upgraded there towers sorry your sol lol

It is either the towers or your phone isn't compatible with the bands of LTE (there are multiple bands like there is with UTMS).

I'm pretty sure it isn't the towers cause my friends iPhone 5 is running off LTE and he live about 5 minutes away from my house. I've also been at distances one minute away from his house and did not pick up LTE then either. I don't know much about bands or frequencies but my carrier just launched the Galaxy S3's and they run off LTE and I'm assuming the Note 2 has the same hardware. S3: 700 (Band 17), 1700/2100 (AWS) MHz , Note 2: 700(band 17) 850 AWS 1,900(band 2). I'm clueless as to what those numbers mean but i'm guessing the important thing is Band 17, right?

Try going near his house then. Or have you checked the network settings? You may have to flash something.

I have to no avail. I had a friend try to help me out over the phone with network settings and his phone appears to have a setting that mine does not. When he goes into settings > wireless and network more settings > mobile network there is an option for him to toggle between LTE, HSPA+ etc. My phone doesn't have that for some reason. All that's listed is Mobile data, data roaming, Access point names, and network operators. Nothing to toggle between networks, which is probably what I need to enable LTE. I have no idea why that setting would be absent from my device. My friend was using an S3 on the same operating system as me btw.

From what i can tell it's the frequencies . The frequencies your device have seem to be different than the frequencies the s3 have on your carrier. If it's not that then you can check your apn settings.

What model is your phone, and what model is his phone. You said you brought your phone from a competing carrier who is likely using alternate frequencies that your phone might not be picking up either due to hardware or software limitations. Without knowing the hardware, and where it came from in the first place, we can't figure out what frequencies your phone is looking for and can't answer your question effectively.

download an app that will show you what is the type of connection you are actually on.
I think that maybe its the matter of incorrect icon.

Who is using the 910C/F on AT&T

IS anyone actually using he 910F/C on AT&T and getting LTE speeds? I see a lot of theory and band matching but I am not sure band numbers are the end all in different countries. Before I pay $800 for a US version I want to be sure I HAVE to in order to get LTE Speeds on an unlocked device

I'm using N910C on AT&T. LTE works, at least where I'm at (Ohio). It works out of the box for me while others say they have to call AT&T to have them provision your account with new IMEI.

Anyone else using this phone on att? All of the negative reviews on amazon are people claiming that they dont get lte with this version.

Using 910c and getting lte

Decided to go with T Mobile Note 4, Easier to sell if it does not work with LTE.

Just ordered an N910C, and plan on using it on AT&T. I live in Missouri, and will report how it does. All of the bands are there. So I don't see why it wouldn't.

What did you find out? I'm trying to decide which model to get also LTE in AT&T Los Angeles, specifically if N910U will work.

So I have had it for a couple weeks. At first I was disappointed to learn that I did not have LTE. My download speed seemed low, the icon only showed 4G, and "LTE Discovery" showed LTE, but no band. I spent a couple hours on the phone with AT&T troubleshooting, went to a corporate store to get a new sim, and nothing worked.
HOWEVER, I put my phone into service mode at my house. You enter service mode by entering "*#0011#" into your phone dialer. Once in here, it said that I was connected to LTE band 17. So I went to another city praying that band 4 would be there, because then both LTE bands would be confirmed. Boom band 4 shows up in service mode, too.
So after quite a while of testing, I can confirm LTE connectivity for AT&T on the N910C for both band 17 and 4. I also learned that I was speed testing during prime time hours. So my tower was congested, and that was why the speeds were low. The icon didn't show, because there doesn't seem to be an LTE icon in the system.
On the topic of the N910U, though, I was pretty sure that it was a 3G only device. I may be wrong, and will look into it.
UPDATE: From what I have found, the N910U supports the following bands: 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,28. AT&T uses 4 and 17. So the device only has 1 of 2 LTE bands. So theoretically, you could connect to LTE in a band 4 area, but I also found some reports on XDA of AT&T's towers only handing down HSPA+ even in those areas. You can join that discussion HERE. Phone keeps switching between 4G and LTE.

Received the phone today. It keeps switching between 4G and LTE in my home. When I walk around the house, it changes constantly. It might be LTE in the living room one minute, and when I circle around and go back there, its on 4G. Does this all over the house. I am two blocks away from a TMobile tower. My Samsung Galaxy S6 stays on LTE. Wonder what the problem is? As of now, its a deal breaker for me and the phone might go back unless there is a satisfactory solution.

I also have the same problem. It always switches in SIM card status between HSPA and UMTS like it has some kind of a bug. Wifi connections works fine, can make calls and SMS, but the big problem is that I can't connect to the Mobile internet. Please can someone help because this is really disappointing.

Also this constantly switching and searching for network is draining my battery very fast. So I need to switch to 2G to stop the consumption.

I have the 6gb Version and the Chinese Stock Rom and with Tmobile i got 4g and in a City area i get 4g+ but it always works. Do you have a Shop Rom installed.

I don't know which Rom is in my phone, but I think it's Shop Rom because I received it from Honorbuy.com. My phone model is LEX720 6GB ram & 64GB storage.

mine ( dual sim, 6g/64g) was initially from the shop and it had customer rom. but the 4g was very stable. however, i still flashed the factory rom 017s . but with either rom, the phone have been working fine on 4g network.

Mine does 4G and Let switching too. Seems to prefer 4G and kicks up to LTE if needed based on demand. 4G has a theoretical speed that no provider even dishes out that I know of so I wouldn't worry about that. Battery drain could be an issue, but doesn't seem to hurt mine at all (US version on T-Mobile in Dallas). In fact I suspect it does that to save battery, trying to go with whichever is strongest. Total guess though.

I manage to fix data connection by setting the real APN address. Now 4g works well and there is no switching.

How do u get the real APN number. I am on T-Mobile

When you guys see LTE go to 4G, do you see a little + sign behind the 4G icon? If so, that's normal. It's indicating that you're getting TWO simultaneous LTE connections at once (or in other words, Carrier Aggregation is active). Try doing a speedtest and you'll see pretty quick speeds. It's one of the first things I noticed when I got mine.

You should ask on T-Mobile to give you APN number. I got it from my own operator.

I might be wrong here, but isn't LTE and 4g the same thing?
or is it like HSPA+ and 3g (which is not the same thing)
i get 4g everywhere i go, it never changes to 3g or HSPA+ i can't really complain about that, i do however also live in denmark with GSM

I had to change the APN on mine too. Kept going between 3g 4g and no service.

The new ipdate fix this problem. The switch between 4g and lte. Now its lte every time.

lg v20 unlocked us996 no LTE

Hi everyone I just purchases the device for B&H Photo and I'm not getting LTE on att. I changed all the apn and still no luck. It's strange because when I put my cricket wireless sim I get LTE and band 17 works flawlessly. So I also trying putting my AT&T sim in my LG G5 and LTE works no problem. Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

that's odd. are we 100 percent sure the 996 has all bands for att lte?

You shouldn't have any problems. I hope you do figure it out. ATT uses bands 2, 4, 17, and 30. The US996 supports 2, 4, and 17. The lack of band 30 I don't think should be that big of a deal as it only appears to be available in congested areas to lighten the load on the other bands. I'd think that 2, 4, and 17 should be available everywhere where ATT is available. I'll have the US996 tomorrow and will try and remember to post my results. I have ATT also.

yeah it does has all the bands i was using it with cricket wireless on band 17 but for some odd reason its just not working on att itself and not detecting its tower.

I'll be waiting for your results tomorrow. yeah its strange how its just not connecting to LTE at all.

wonder if att has problems provisioning it on their network like Verizon sometimes does. I'm getting mine Sunday and have verizon so I'm hoping to hell it works fine.

Just got back from AT&T because I needed a nano sim. I'm getting LTE no problem. I've seen reports on other phones not getting no LTE when their line isn't configured for it by AT&T. If you happened to have a non-LTE phone prior to this you may need to reach out and have them provision your sim.

Yeah I have my line provision for lte since my g5 but for some reason it's just not taking it. Are you getting good reception for band 17?

Good signal so far. I'm on band 17 at home with the usual 2-3 bars I got with my old Note 3.

Quite possibly. I went into AT&T and they gave me a new sim for free. Couldn't hurt.

I just got my LG V20 US996 and I have no LTE also. I am in Canada of Fido network. I was getting LTE with the same sim on my LG G3. Any advise?

APN not setup proper or new sim needed.

I just got my V20 unlocked using it on VZWs network. Advance calling is working and I get LTE but I'm having an issue.
My signal sucks. I took the phone to work in DC same places I used my S5 and my speedtest yields a no network message. Apps were taking to 4 hours to down load, google play would lose its connection. My s5 got 12 hours and my v20 us996 died in 4 hours.
I have lte bars but the connection is poor. Calls via 4g advance calling were poor. I had to turn it off.
I was home Sat on Wi-Fi and the battery lastested 24 hours on wifi.
Now I'm in SC on my vacation sitting in a restaurant and can't pull up the internet on 4 bars or vzw lte.
Did a speed test on the same server side by side with my wife's s7. Her ping was 67 and 14 mb of down load and 2.5 mb upload.
My ping was 800 and got 1.5 down load and lost the connection on the upload.
I love everything else about the phone but I can't do this poor reception and quick diying battery becasue of it.
Spoke to Verizon tier two tech support and they say everything is perfect on the phone.
So dont know what to do now.

Crazy thing is that I'm sottong here on band 5 with 3 bars. Band 5 is an AT&T and I'm unlocked connected to Verizon service.

I'm having the exact same problem with my B&H phone - just showing 4G not LTE. But when I do a speed test, I'm getting 25MB/s down\5MB/up, so not so worried about it. I am having problems with phone calls too, but I use google voice so as long as there's a network connection I'm good. I'm going to run into an AT&T store and talk to someone - I bet there's something they have to do to bless the SIM card. I popped mine out of a Nexus 6P and put it into the V20 hoping it might just work, which it mostly is. It's not just you, in other words!

Pixel has poor network handling, switch to LTE only mode.

I have T-Mobile and I've noticed the Pixel has issues finding the best network to use. For example my school has excellent LTE coverage ("full bars") yet for some reason the Pixel would use HSPA+ or 3g instead which is extremely slow compared to the 12+ MB I get on LTE
So I switched the Pixel to LTE only mode, and I've yet to have any issues with reception, I always have LTE. Where before the Pixel would often switch to 3g when LTE was available.
This is obviously an issue with the Pixel, Google has struggled with this in the past w/ Nexus devices. They love 3G.
I recommend everyone try this little hack, LTE coverage is good enough these days I feel 3G is not needed (in most areas).
To switch the Pixel to LTE only mode enter --
*#*#4636#*#*
-- Into the dialer, then go to "Phone Information", and under "Set Preferred Network Type" select "LTE only".
When I did this my Pixel immediately switched from HSPA+ to "full bars" LTE (ya network handling on this phone is that bad).

This issue may not affect Verizon or CDMA networks, I just know for T-Mobile, it's pretty bad.

Yup happens to me

Yeah but how good is reception after it switches over to LTE? Same amount of bars or less?

This is great for people who have carriers who support the Pixel on their VOLTE.. Which is only like 3 (ish) carriers worldwide, everyone else wont be able to make or receive phone calls if they do this. Just FYI.

My carrier Jio is 4G LTE + VoLTE only. They do not have any legacy 2G/3G network.
I felt that Pixel is excellent in switching to the 4G band which has strongest singal.

This wouldn't work with the AT&T and Verizon MVNOs I've used, but I'd want my phone to automatically switch for better coverage if I was doing this sort of thing. For example using Tasker you may be able to have the phone switch the radio depending on condition, such as being near a certain cell tower. The following app works on a rooted Pixel to change the network modes, so it's at least possible to change the network mode automatically with a rooted phone.

If you go to Settings > More > Cellular network > Preferred network type, what options do you see there? I'm curious because if Jio only has LTE, LTE-only option might be available in that menu.
Personally I'm on Verizon and also use LTE-only mode. It really improves experience in low signal areas where the phone often switches to weak CDMA, which is good for nothing (no data and 50/50 probability for a call to work). In LTE-only mode it stays on weak LTE that is still usable.
The only problem with it is if I open Cellular network settings or restart the phone, it reverts back to LTE/CDMA mode, so I need to change it back to LTE-only again. At least I found an app called 4G LTE Switch that works like a shortcut to the hidden menu, so I don't have to type *#*#4636#*#* every time.

Weird, I have no issues with the Pixel on T-Mobile. It loves to stick on LTE as long as possible. Even if it drops to 3G/2G in weak areas, it switches back to LTE very quickly.

A third to the no issues at all on T-Mobile. I've also used my Pixel on att and vzw with no premature fallback issues.
