Drop test OP5 - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Atlast found drop test of OP5 on youtube. Kuddos to the guy. Think display doesn't withstand more than 5 feet drop. :crying: link

Not bad, but not unbrokable
Better idea is wear it with TPU case or a bumper and tempered glass as well

Can confirm good quality construction

I happened to drop my Eee Pad from about 3' at the airport going through security scanner straight onto a concrete floor.
Everything works with no problems. Only a small dent on one corner :-( (Very sad!!!!)
Well built, Asus

You were extremely lucky not to have the screen shatter (if you didnt have any case on). IMO given the wight and size, the odds of surviving such a fall with minor damage is very low.

It doesn't shatter with Gorilla Glass, you'll get scratches but unless you stomp on it really hard (REALLY hard), it won't shatter, best you'll do is crack it.

Samsung Galaxy S phone uses Gorilla glass too, but it can shatter/crack if dropped from high enough (FF to 5.20). Gorilla glass is tougher than regular glass, but its not as tough as you might think...
A few weeks ago, mine fell out of a case (not zipped) also at about that height and landed on its corner and then face up on some travertine tile. Small dent in the corner, but no problems otherwise. It's pretty tough.

Yeah, no TF drop stories, but my gorilla glass Vibrant broke when the screen landed right on the edge of a tile from 3-4 feet. At first I couldn't see the cracks in the glass, so I hit the power button, and saw a little bit of pink. Took it to the light and noticed cracks running all across the screen.
The stuff is really tough, but it's still glass, just very strong glass.

Anybody dropped it yet?

I am quite concerned about this phone's durability especially if it drops flat on the face. Galaxy s had its body slightly coming out so that protected the glass from impact, but note has its glass fully exposed to a drop and then bam. So did anybody drop it yet? I'd love to shell out for a case but there aren't any useful ones so far, hopefully one will come out in near future.
The gorilla glass should help with this.

Most of the times the glass is ok but the underlying lcd can give away
I thought the Gorilla Glass was just for scratch proofing!? My Streak shattered when I dropped that and I think that uses Gorilla glass. I'm very keen for the nice slim gel covers to appear on ebay or wherever, very worried about dropping it..

Z3 Screen Durability

Hey guys,
I have a Z3C. Love the phone obviously. It's awesome. I had my phone on the top of my desk, it fell to my keyboard tray maybe 6 inches lower and the screen shattered. I've read on the web that similar durability issues plague the Z3C. I'm wondering if your experiences with the Z3 have been similar. Can the Z3 withstand minimal abuse like what killed my Z3C, or it is similarly susceptible? Thanks
I've dropped my Z3 about 5 times already including on tile and asphalt and its not even scratched... Probably has to do with the plastic / rubber corners, does the compact design have that?
I've dropped my Z3 over five times and the glass is in perfect condition. I had tempered glass on for two of the attempts it fell and only the nilken tempered glass shattered. The nylon corner bumps work pretty well in ensuring that the Z3 is durable and shatter resistant. Although I did get scared at first (hence why I bought the tempered glass), my worries were completely unfounded and my Z3 is still in perfect condition (aside for small marks on the nylon corners).
I would say that if you drop the phone flat on the ground with the glass hitting the ground first, you will probably suffer. If you are planning to replace it, get a case to feel more secure. Otherwise, if you want to keep the aesthetics of the phone, get a tempered glass and you can feel at ease.
I've dropped mine numerous times and it survived. Keeping it in my back pocket broke the glass...

As my luck has it, the first three days of my Z3 in my ownership saw it fall at least 5 times, two of them from a desk's height and on the floor tiles. It only sufferd minimal nicks on the bronze finish, nothing else. Can't wait for the tempered glass and the TPU case I ordered alongside the phone to arrive...
It's crazy... most of my friends have galaxy phones and they've had so many cracked screens issue. In 4 smartphones I've owned, starting with LG G2x, and Z, Z1S, and now Z3, my phones have never cracked. I also use no case.
Guess i'm lucky?
Mine has come through a couple of drops unscathed, dropped from hip height on marble with no case, only standard screen protector

No cracks but I got a pretty big scratch on the screen within my first week and I never ever put it in a pocket or in a bag with other items. Since then I got one of the nillkin glass screen protectors. Not a scratch on it and I'm far less careful with it now. Why couldn't Sony just use the glass Nillkin uses?
I wonder if I can pay Sony to replace my screen down the line for a fee. Then I wouldn't worry so much.

I dropped mine from a chair onto a patio which is like concrete and apparently hit the corner of the phone. It cracked the corner of the back glass about an inch radially. I used some glass glue and covered it up. Its fine now still waterproof.
Sony's lame, the back should have been carbon fiber for shock proofing and the edges should have ridges for grip. When I first got it it was so slippery it was ridiculous.
Funny enough, 5 minutes after I cracked the back somebody gave me a really nice leather case for it.

I love the slippery cool glass slick feel. I would not settle for anything else. Since my iPhone 4s, the Nexus 4 and now this, I realise i'm addicted to these materials. I have dropped mine but always on carpet, no damage thank God. My brother dropped his uncountable times and onto wood floor and tile etc with no cracked glass, just metal rim damaged and scuffed.
I haven't dropped mine and do not have a case nor any screen protection. I don't excessively wipe the phone down but do wipe it when the fingerprints begin to bug me. I phone mostly wipes itself when inserting/removing from my pocket.
I've had the device or about 1.5-2 months and baby it.
The screen has zero micro scratches or any other permanent marks, but the rear panel has micro scratches from simply being placed on a hard, smooth, CLEAN surface like a table. I don't slide the phone across surfaces and put down/pick up the phone very carefully so it doesn't slide/scrape across any surface.
So while the screen appears to be fairly scratch resistant, my experience is that the back becomes easily scratched even when taking the utmost care.
My phone is black which shows these scratches more easily than a lighter color would.
I've had mine for a few months and dropped it several times, but my luck ran out today. Cold, slushy parking lot + road salt was apparently the last straw...
Have you heard of glass protection and cases? I've dropped my Z1 many times and no issues, applying the same protection to Z3.

I had a Terrapin case and a Rhino Shield screen protector on it, but while the screen protector only had a couple.. what feel like small puncture holes? , the screen itself was completely shattered.
My rear Glas cracked today for amusingly no reason.
We'd just been out to walk the dog, as we came back an put our phones on the table, we heard a cracking sound but couldn't picture where it came from. As I went over to pick up my phone we saw all the cracks all across the rear.
How could this happen, I doubt through the difference in temperature, although it really was cold outside today.
It's a really expensive device and I am really upset about this right now. How can the glas, even if it is just the rear, crack out of appearingly no reason???
Probably from the temperature difference? Live in Minnesota but have not suffered from it so far though I have heard many instances like yours. Another XDA member got a free replacement, try talking to Sony.
I actually guess it really is from.the temperature difference.
Already spoken to my retailer about this, they're picking the device up tomorrow for a free repair or replacement.
Also confirmed that there a a lot of devices with such a problem. I thought they had enough experience by now with glas fronts and backs.
It really is upsetting
Well that's good, no worries. In fact BBC's Watchdog program did an investigation for the Z1 or Z2 for the same problem after many people complained to them. Sony agreed the issue exists and said they will do free replacements as long as it's only "a single fine crack" at the time. I think they are not so picky now.

Cases that protect screen from breaking on fall

I'm new to the Android market. I switched from Windows Phone, I had the Lumia 1520 and loved it. I switched because I'm now in Project Fi, and have a Nexus 6P coming in the mail. I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a case w/ kickstand that can actually protect the screen (or the sensor bar) from breaking if I drop it face down. Any such thing exist for Android without it being huge or bulky?
Thanks
Welcome to XDA and Nexus6 P! See info in Accessories for cases, etc.

I have a spigen rugged armor case. Its a relatively slim rubber/tpu case. It does form a nice lip around the edges so when the phone is face down the glass isn't actually touching the surface that it is laying on. Yesterday I have my first legitimate drop. Phone fell face down into tile floor from approximately 3-4 feet. Case did its job. Screen is fine and no dents.
rhinoshield bumper for the 6P is the best there is. 11 foot drop protection and super minimal. Watch the drop test videos.
Poetic Revolution is also a very tough case if you donĀ“t mind the dimensions.

What about the aluminum tho? It scratches easy with just the protection of the sides the aluminum gets scratched

I have an I-Blason case (Two piece) that has kickstand on back. I put screen protector on screen. The combo appears to be rugged enough to protect against damage from most falls. Haven't tested it yet though.

Gorilla glass not tough enough on Axon 7 :(

Looks like Gorilla Glass on Axon 7 is not tough enough, I broker my screen this weekend. Was in museum and phone fell from my hand onto a wooden floor of museum, and screen is shattered. Although it is functional and working, the screen glass is broken. I think I'm bit less impressed with the screen toughness of this thing. A phone fell from hand roughly 5 feet above ground, onto a floor and it shatters the glass. Am I covered by Axon 2 year warranty on this one or I need to get it fixed on my own ?
My wife's S7 edge fell a foot and the screen shattered in 2 places. The worst piece of **** I've seen.

A five foot fall onto a wooden floor would crack most screens unless the phone was in a rugged case.

Agreed. It's "GLASS", not iron. And hard glass is difficult to scratch but is brittle. Do people not understand hardness? Lol
The harder a substance is the more difficult it is to scratch but also the harder something is the more brittle it is.
Tungsten is a very hard metal... But people don't realize if you drop a pure tungsten ring it most likely will shatter. Same concept.
If you want glass that isn't super brittle it will scratch easier. If you want glass that won't scratch it will be brittle. Until we find some kind of super glass this is how it will be.
That's pretty much result as expected.....
You can RMA but they probably charge you a deductible as it would consider an accident.

Pure tungsten is ductile. polycrystalline tungsten is brittle.
Interesting, I'm seeing tests on youtube for iPhone 6s and Galaxy Edge being drop tested without any major issue from as high as 10-12 feet. I will RMA it with ZTE but was surprised about it not surviving it this little fall.

Much of it depends on the angle of impact. I know several people who have cracked their Galaxy Edges on fairly benign drops. Almost everybody I know with an iPhone (not that many) have at least one crack in the screen, but since it doesn't impair usage they often just keep on using the phone.

Exactly. A drop is not a drop and the angle is much more important than the height.

Never heard about that nor learned about it in college, but that's also probably one of the reasons I stopped going because they don't really teach you anything nowadays. Anyway I digress, the harder a substance is the more brittle it will become.
I mean look at Diamonds, the hardest substance known to man and yet it can be shattered quite easily
interesting comparison

People don't understand Gorilla Glass. It's not about how strong it is, but how scratch resistant. And believe me, Gorilla Glass 4 is REALLY scratch resistant. Everyone could possible break when dropped on a wooden floor.
Do you come under the 6 month screen repair?

Which is why I'm glad the Axon 7 uses it instead of the easily scratched Gorilla Glass 5. I don't care in the least about shatter resistant, I don't drop my phones, ever. However I do want to be able to use my phone without an oil magnet (aka screen protector) so it's super important to me that it be scratch resistant as possible. That's why I'm hoping there will eventually be sapphire screens (though it seems unlikely). I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the A7's camera lens is covered by sapphire.
Seeing as how the Axon 7 design is very similar to the htc one m8, this gripe is justified, if you ask me. The lack of edge to edge glass creates a buffer between the corners of the phone and the edge of the glass. I dropped my htc one m8 flat on concrete, more than once, and not a scratch. I was hoping the Axon 7 would have the same type of durability.
gorilla glass is not shatterproof just like Moto Droid turbo 2/X force/Z force . these phones have such a great shatterproof glass. have a look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V2r_9Um2Tw
