Hi guys
I came from a Galaxy S7 Edge and as much as I absolutely loved that device, I ended up getting the dreaded pink line on the display until I eventually retired it and purchased the Galaxy S8 yesterday. My issue with the S7 is that I rooted it from day one since I am a fan of customization and custom ROMs and therefore I couldn't really take advantage of the warranty. Does the S8 have the same display problem? I'm really hesitant about rooting it and installing custom ROMs and such but at the same time I really want to.
Your advice and opinions are appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Hey mate im a former S7 edge user too loved the device had a friend who had the same device he rooted it and after a while it developed a pink line on the screen he flashed a stock ROM got an OTA update and took it to Samsung they replaced it for him for free nvm depends on different countries and different regulations u could try that if it can work furthermore i have another friend who works for Samsung he told me that was an issue with manufacturing so they replace for free coz of the manufacturing defect i talked to him recently after purchasing the s8 he told me that the s8 had no defect issues since Samsung wanted to make it a bomber upon his saying thats when i was convinced and rooted my device and now i dont regret rooting since i like customizing too.. Hope i helped
@Codex1998 Thanks for your reply, you've been very helpful. Speaking of modding and custom ROMs, what would be your favorite ROM at the moment? I'm thinking I should flash either Bat-Stock or Bat-Man ROMs, but I hear that one of them has a random reboot issue.
What gains would you get if you root your s8?
Hi,.
i also had a s7 edge, was rooted and after maybe ... a half year i got the pink line too BUT i bought the s7 edge by amazon and i've initiated a repair assignment and WITH ROOT i got a full repaired phone back for FREE, And the best of all these the workshop who repaired my phone has replaced with the display a lot of other components like a new accu and so on, all for free. So f*ck on triggered knox status and try to repair your phone, it was a hardware issue not an software issue. Triggered Knox doesnt mean that yo lost your warranty in all cases.

Talking about ROMs at this stage i have tried a ton of Roms out there but have enjoyed BatMan ROM the most if no random reboot issues if you are a fan of mods then BatMan rom is for you since all mods are free not paid like other roms out there which is really amazing for the dev to do furthermore you can join the BatMan rom telegram group and get more advice from there last thing to add is that the dev is really responsive and a very cool/chill guy so if u have any issues you can talk to him or his staff all are cool and really helpful.... Enjoy ROM Hunting
@Codex1998 I asked about the reboot issue on the thread and he quickly replied saying that the kernel was the issue and it was supposedly updated today so hopefully things will work out fine from now on.
Thanks again for all your help. I'll let you know how the whole process goes.
I'm assuming the process, like with the S7 exactly, starts from OEM unlock > flash TWRP > nandroid backup > update modem and bootloader to the latest files > flash custom ROM from within TWRP. Correct?

@kernelu Oh man I am sorry to hear that. I hope they fix it properly. How long have you had the phone? And did the pink line just come up out of no where?
Thanks. Had it for 3 months. The phone was never droped or anything, just woke up with it like this in the morning.
I can't believe that samsung didn't fix this sh*t on a new generation of phones. I mean, it was a relatively common problem for s7 edge... -.- stupid.
Rooting and triped knox doesnt affect warranty in Europe. Dont hesitate a moment. Take the phone back and claim whats yours. 2017 and we still have pink lines and burn ins all over the place. What troubles me the most is that people hesitate to return the phone because they think its there problem. Well its not. The phone should work as advertised.
Got my s8+ from service. They replaced the display. (pink line problem) :good:

You're absolutely right. After I sold my S7 Edge, the buyer took it to Samsung and they replaced the screen for him free of charge, even though I had previously rooted the device and triggered knox. I'm from Egypt so I am guessing the policies of whole Africa region is going to be the same.

ok so i am 99% sure i will buy the nexus one, i just have some concerns.
for one i have been hearing ever since the phone was released about the dust issue, also heard that htc knows about this and would fix what was needed. so the qeustion about this is if this is a valid reason for me to hold of on buying a nexus one?
the second thing is that i am not sure i want to root yet (probably willl^^) but the concern is that the stock kernel as i understand it only supports half of the ram in the nexus one leaving the other half useless. will google deploy a kernel update anytime soon and how much does it show when using the stock device that such a big part of the ram isn´t used?
thanks in advance
ignore the fud... hundreds of thousands of people are very happy with their stock N1..
if you get it, and are not happy with stock... you got options.
can't say that about the other contenders.
i got mine yesterday.
the screen itself seems fine. the screen cover isn't peeling up but i have a rather large spec of dust under it? no idea if it was there from when it was built or magically worked it's way under there...
good thing it has a 12 month hardware warranty i guess? i wonder if unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty for something so obviously unrelated.

just got off the phone with HTC support. if you root/unlock the boot loader the entire warranty is voided. even if it has dust under the screen.
hopefully someone figures out how to relock it soon..
but ANY dust under the screen will be enough of a reason for a hardware replacement within the 12 month warranty period if you haven't done anything to void the warranty.
I've had mine since launch with no dust issues. The RAM thing was originally brought up by Google developers who said they are working on implementing it.
Also had mine since launch with no dust issues or any other bugs! It still flies with the current ram (should get more ram update from google soon). Play with it a while before you want to root!

does the N1 really only have 256MB of ram currently accessible? that would explain why i only tend to have ~110MB of ram free after shutting all applications down.
and seriously, 10 minutes in the hacking and development sections or the theme area and you want to root.

Been very happy. Never had a problems with dust or the stock rom. Plenty of customization options out there for the stock N1's too.
Go for it and it you have smooth sailing after a few months maybe you'll root it.

the dust issue is a very isolated and rare case... you will get a new phone no charges toward you if you have this issue...
as for the stock kernel, there is plenty of memory... i ran stock for the first month and a half before i rooted to the dark side... never had a big slow down issue and even then just get a task manager... i was getting like 100mb of ram on stock with almost everything closed

Yes on only 256MB active on the N1! There is a hack in development if you need more and can't wait for the ota.
True about the fun after root for most, but this was the op's 1st post.
Two things... what does "fud" mean? As for the 256mb, it hasn't been an issue yet. My phone's logged over 220 hours of uptime without any slowdowns and I haven't killed a single task in that time. Stock ROM..not rooted and locked bootloader. I'm confident that Google will update the kernel soon...hopefully along with a better tweak to the 3G connectivity.
Thanks for all your answers! Im definently buying i nexus one soon was thinking about getting desire instead but hate sense and the droid eris still has not been rooted so the same could happen with the desire.
Thanks again!

Hello ,i installed the OTA 4.4 update on my stock unrooted nexus 2012 wifi and i see some little artifacts if i rotate the screen multiple times , i flashed the google factory image 4.4 for a fresh start but the same happens, it's a bug from google i guess, i'm thinking reverting to 4.3 , anyone experience these artifacts with the official update?
Hello, I also updated my nexus 7 from android 4.3
Stock ROM to Android 4.4 stock ROM, rooted.
So far it is working fine and no WiFi disconnecting
Issue. At first, KitKat ROM seem to run slower compare to android 4.3. Did a wipe of cache/dalvich
and factory reset in TWRP, KitKat ROM is running
Smooth and snappier. Enjoying KitKat stock ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
thanks for reply, i guess kit kat is a good under the hood update and i want the latest ver on tablet but did you get any little tiny artifacts on the side of the screen (which disappears after rotation) if you rotate the display multiple times (portrait-landscape four - five times)?
ok i flashed 4.3 and the artifacts disappeared so kit kat is buggy on 2012 model or an update from google store (on google apps) after the flash of 4.4 brakes something

what do you mean artifacts? Ive noticed from time to time whats looks like little dead pixels but really only when rotating or on the lockscreen.
Was wondering what happened here.
yes i mean these dead pixels, i wanted to know that it wasn't only on my device , it's minor but it didn't happen with 4.3

I'm having the same problem after 4.4, my friend. I get little artifacts while changing screen orientation in the app drawer. The background is black, so it's really noticable. And yeah, 4.3 was fine. Did you report the problems to Google? I tried to, but to be honest, I don't know where to send the email.
yeah this is something that has annoyed the heck out of me since 4.4
It started happening right away.
Perhaps we can get more people to get in on this and get a fix from google.
And I am not rooted in any way so its a stock issue.
heres a google discussion i started for it.

If Google doesn't fix this, let's hope that the CyanogenMod Developers will. I didn't plan on rooting my tablet, but they are forcing me to.

I am getting the exact same effect when rotating the display. I began noticing it since the 4.4 OTA update. I hoped that 4.4.2 will solve this but it did not. It's not bugging me as much as it did the first few times but it gives me the impression of unfinished job.

Could some of you contact Google because they just told me Im SOL and I have to deal with the factory warranty now which is expired.

to me
Hello Tyler,
Thank you for contacting Google.
I understand that your device has began these issues after your update to 4.4 KitKat. However, if the factory data reset does not resolve the issue, we have to refer you to the retailer from which you purchased your device to inquire about warranty options. We provide warranty replacement devices for purchases made through Google Play when the factory data reset does not fix the current issue. You are also welcome to contact the manufacturer which is Asus. Their toll free number is 1-888-678-3688.
The only other option I can recommend, is to wait for the next update to the software to come out that fixes these bugs.
If you have any other questions about your next step, please reply directly to this email or call our toll free number 1-855-83-NEXUS. One of our agents will be happy to assist you.
Again, thank you for contacting Google today. Have a fantastic weekend.
Well its well over a year and my warranty is well over. Im about to dump 4.3 back on just to PROVE to them its their software causing the bug.
My guess is most people are on CM or another ROM which doesnt get affected by this bug but those of us still using OTA rooted android should probably all be dealing with it to some degree.
Not very pleasant indeed. Well, I'll be waiting for some newer updates (just because it doesn't bother me that much now, I got used to it). I'm not that anxious to make a factory data reset. If nothing happens I will be transition to Cgen of which I've heard and read many good things especially the new installer.

I have a SM-G928F that has been rooted, and knox tripped.
I am now on stock firmware. Reseted twice, once from Samsung smart switch, and one time from vol+home+power button way.
I don't seem to be able to get updates anymore, for the phone itself.
I get updates for applications though. Through play store, and galaxy apps.
Is this "normal" or what is going on?

On my S4 when rooted I got the update message, but an error upon trying to install it. Possibly they have changed the behaviour so it doesn't show when rooted? I don't have my S6 rooted however so cannot confirm this..
Ok. I'm on stock firmware now though, only knox tripped. I'm gonna rip Samsung's vd hair out if they ****ed this up.
I can confirm that OTA works if you are on stock firmware. Even though knox is tripped due to previous rooted phone.

I dunno. I guess. I'm using the default mode now. The edge features is enhanced since 5.1.1 and it's for the better imo. Though it feels a bit slow in typing at times, sms etc. The autocorrect for words is definitely slower. The suggestions part at least. I have a feeling there will come a performance update later on. Only God knows. Man can only hope.
BTW. What do you mean by not true black?
Edge UI is a theme in the Samsung Theme store

Are you sure it's called edge UI? I searched for edge under the tab "All" without result.
Battery is more horrible in 6.0.1, same with fingerprint scanner. Bah!

It was the marshmallow update I was worried about. The other updates works as usual. But I must say, the battery usage in 6.0.1 really sucks. With this modern phone you have to charge it at least 2 times a day. What happened to charge the phone once a week?
How did you get your S6 edge+ to last an entire week (7 days), I was lucky to manage 2 days with heavy usage however. Isn't Doze meant to improve battery life? Did you end up flashing it via Odin or got an official update through Smart Switch
Did you flash an S6 edge+ firmware that's for your country or an earlier version for others.

Ok. I was looking on Reddit the everyday with someone showing 17 hours screen on time and he says he can get 8 days usage of his old Xperia phone with Jelly Bean. I thought he was insane till he posting his Gsam report.

Hehe yeah

More annoying is knox software running in background. Tripped knox and the function is out of play. Yet the software is running and stealing juice. I also read here on the forum somewhere that the software steals even more juice on phones that has knox tripped. Compared to those who don't have knox tripped.
Why can't one disable knox entirely?
It does. You experience an issue called "no deep sleep" when Knox is tripped. You can't even reset Knox, if you sell you're device. You have to tell the other person that the warranty by Samsung won't work, you can't use Samsung Pay when released and you have to flash a deep sleep fix unless flashed already. The only reason I'm holding off tripping knox with a better custom ROM is because I want to use Samsung Pay when it released.

I have just the same problem . To be honest, I was "5 minutes away" to go the store as my HTC 10 Evo/Bolt is 5 days old only. But if that not "my unique case" then the update may be the reason.
Did you post any info directly to the HTC?
Please stay in touch as I'll do.
Black Screen
I started experiencing the same issue in December, in addition eventually the issue progresses to screen artifacting and flickering. I am on my second phone and about to send that one in for a replacement due to re-occurrence of the issue.
HTC has about a four week turn around time, so beware. If you have really bad issues ask to speak to the escalations supervisor.
Many people are experiencing this issue. Some have gone through 3-4 replacements already with each new one having the same issue. My BOLT only experiences this when I pull it out of my pocket and unlock. Can be fixed temporarily by giving the right hand side of screen a firm tap. Anybody have any ideas on a fix?
I'm on my 3rd phone due to that issue. You just have to exchange it. No way to fix it.
Mine just started jumping around only on the right side has not blacked out yet

My new one is on an old software version 1.15.651.11 and there have been 3 updates since this version. I have not updated yet.
Thanks,
Yes, def it was after the Android OTA updates. Curious if anyone experience the problem with updating.

I have taken all updates and so far have had no complaints the only time I've had it get warm was when I was charging and playing Pokemon go. No unusual lagging or screen problems so far I am also unlocked and s off I have flashed bb rom and am currently stock right now between the two I have had I good experience so far I hope htc gets the kinks out because this phone even though has an older processor is a good device.
I took .6 so far so good haven't noticed excessive heat

I too like the phone except for the kinks. I have taken OTA for .15 anc .22 without any issues. Then after about another day it is telling me to update to the new 1.32.651.6. everything is good but i guess i will take the update and hope for the best.
Recently I've been having trouble with the screen staying black with key pad lit on wake on gesture or power button. That may have been caused by my case... But more concerning is the screen flickering. It seems to come about more as the day goes on. When it starts to happen I tried rebooting, and it does it during boot too. I wonder about the longevity of this phone
Just a security update, nothing else to see here.

Here I was thinking my phone would stop doing soft reboots at least 4x a day while also being able to get LTE/4G in the same locations my Note 2 & 3 did.

Trying to get this installed but it seems that it doesn't play well with TWRP.
Also tried installing it manually in TWRP /cache/fota/update.zip but TWRP said the zip is corrupted...

I keep seeing people talking about this reboot problem when 99.9% of the time the solution is so simple. Get a new battery.
I wish it was that simple...

My Note worked perfectly until this recent update. About 2 days after taking the update, my Note started rebooting, lagging, freezing...basically becoming unusable.
I have 4 batteries, and no matter which battery or whether plugged in or not, this happened.
Wake lock app helped but then, yesterday, the phone wouldnt boot. Nothing but black screen. Would not charge with any battery or any combo of cables and chargers.
By playing around with it, I finally got it to boot into recovery, however, there was no recovery. No matter whether I did power up or down, I got download mode.
The firmware repair using the PIT file got me back in action through Odin. It still took half a day to get the phone stable.
Long story short, it's not always the battery. I think these updates cause issues. The web is full of similar cases. My phone has been completely stock and still this happens. Even going back to Android 5.0 didn't cure the software corruption that this latest update caused me. My phone still won't work without the wake lock app.
I was thinking S8Plus but now I'm thinking no more Samsung.

Hey, I DID say 99.9%, not 100%.

This has nothing to do with the battery. This issue with the Note 4 rebooting is common and no matter which battery you use, the issue continues. I have numerous reason why that is but they seem to do with the MM updates not playing well with the hardware on the Note 4, especially the most recent updates (last 2 or 3). No matter what people try, the issue continues. The Wake Lock app seems to help a bit but this is no long term solution and honestly I don't think Samsung or Google will invest any time in fixing this issue for a device that is over 2 years old. They want people to upgrade.

Does this include stock unmodified and fully OEM phones? My wife's Note 4 started rebooting a lot in the last few days. She has done NOTHING other than standard user stuff. Me? I always mod mine or add an extended battery, but hers straight up the consumer setup, including the original battery.
If the battery, why would a battery cause this? just getting old or is this related to mods or buying after market batteries.

A phone battery (at least these days) isn't like a D battery you put in a flashlight. It communicates with the phone. When it starts to go bad, it can cause things like premature shutdowns and boot loops.
Yes, I've been running 6.0.1 ever since I got it OTA, and have never rooted or loaded a custom ROM since then. Suddenly my phone started shutting down at 40-60%, and often went into a boot loop. The only way I could stop it was to put it on the charger. But as soon as I had it fully charged, it would start giving me problems at 40-60% again.
I bought 2 supposedly Samsung OEM batteries, one from Amazon, and one with the external charger from Sprint. They both fixed the problem, but the Amazon battery sucks. It looks identical to the Sprint, but I suspect it's a clone. It doesn't last nearly as long as the Sprint OEM battery. I bet you can get a battery that is genuine Samsung other than using Sprint, but just beware.
EDIT: Just as an aside, I didn't suspect the battery was the problem at first. The battery started to swell up, which is why I replaced it. It was a lucky thing that replacing it fixed the problems.
Thanks, got one ordered. for $15, it is worth a try!
Or is it a conspiracy! Is Samsung killing our phones, to make us buy new ones? ???
Just my 2 cents. I don't know, but here is a theory.
Everyone i see make a post about rebooting issues always mentions it after taking ota's.
Now my theory, i can only speak for myself. I've never taken an ota, always upgraded through Odin. When i got my phone it was on ob7, i think. And i upgraded it through Odin since. Thank God i haven't had any problems.
So i wonder if it has something to do with Samsung's ota process? Just a thought!

Samsung doesn't run the OTAs, they come from Google servers.
