No more updates after rooted? - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a SM-G928F that has been rooted, and knox tripped.
I am now on stock firmware. Reseted twice, once from Samsung smart switch, and one time from vol+home+power button way.
I don't seem to be able to get updates anymore, for the phone itself.
I get updates for applications though. Through play store, and galaxy apps.
Is this "normal" or what is going on?

On my S4 when rooted I got the update message, but an error upon trying to install it. Possibly they have changed the behaviour so it doesn't show when rooted? I don't have my S6 rooted however so cannot confirm this..

Ok. I'm on stock firmware now though, only knox tripped. I'm gonna rip Samsung's vd hair out if they ****ed this up.

I can confirm that OTA works if you are on stock firmware. Even though knox is tripped due to previous rooted phone.
I got my 6.0.1 today

I dunno. I guess. I'm using the default mode now. The edge features is enhanced since 5.1.1 and it's for the better imo. Though it feels a bit slow in typing at times, sms etc. The autocorrect for words is definitely slower. The suggestions part at least. I have a feeling there will come a performance update later on. Only God knows. Man can only hope.
BTW. What do you mean by not true black?

Edge UI is a theme in the Samsung Theme store
The developer said it's not true back if you're using it

Ok. I can't find it. Sd_black is a theme from there I used to use. But it needs some updates to work as it did on 5.1.1.
Are you sure it's called edge UI? I searched for edge under the tab "All" without result.
Battery is more horrible in 6.0.1, same with fingerprint scanner. Bah!

Yep. In Samsung Theme Store, go to "SEARCH" and Type in "edge ui", it will appear.

It was the marshmallow update I was worried about. The other updates works as usual. But I must say, the battery usage in 6.0.1 really sucks. With this modern phone you have to charge it at least 2 times a day. What happened to charge the phone once a week?

How did you get your S6 edge+ to last an entire week (7 days), I was lucky to manage 2 days with heavy usage however. Isn't Doze meant to improve battery life? Did you end up flashing it via Odin or got an official update through Smart Switch
Did you flash an S6 edge+ firmware that's for your country or an earlier version for others.

I meant the old phones from late 90 and early 2000.
I got the update via OTA (over the air). So regular update method through the phone.

Ok. I was looking on Reddit the everyday with someone showing 17 hours screen on time and he says he can get 8 days usage of his old Xperia phone with Jelly Bean. I thought he was insane till he posting his Gsam report.

Hehe yeah
One can only hope.
More annoying is knox software running in background. Tripped knox and the function is out of play. Yet the software is running and stealing juice. I also read here on the forum somewhere that the software steals even more juice on phones that has knox tripped. Compared to those who don't have knox tripped.
Why can't one disable knox entirely?

It does. You experience an issue called "no deep sleep" when Knox is tripped. You can't even reset Knox, if you sell you're device. You have to tell the other person that the warranty by Samsung won't work, you can't use Samsung Pay when released and you have to flash a deep sleep fix unless flashed already. The only reason I'm holding off tripping knox with a better custom ROM is because I want to use Samsung Pay when it released.

What's the update for, though? VR?
VR and performance enhancements per Droid Life. I'm taking, Lollipop is coming soon, so even root is achieved, that would likely go away with Lollipop.
I just checked for updates on my Note 4 and its downloading something. Not sure yet what it is.

I thought maybe it was the placebo effect, but I've been running it for a over 3 hours since reboot and there's still much less lag than before the update.
It makes me giggle every time one of these update threads come out how people say wifi/cell signals better, this and that is better blablabla. As far as signals go unless the software running the hardware have serious flaws in it you are not going to see a difference at all. As far as signal strength goes there are so many variable that come into play was before you get anywhere near the software running the radio. Even when it comes to phone applications there is so many variable on how things run from phone to phone settings, environment, and the human using the phone being the major ones. Usually the only time you can really notice performance issues (at lease on a minor release) is if there is a serious that has been fixed or if a new issue has come up. Think the best we can hope for with this release is finding a root exploit. We have been on the previous SW version for a while now and not being able to root it so anything new is a step in the right direction to me. As far as not taking the update to each there own but in my eyes we don't have root so whats the worse that can happen.

It makes me giggle when people try to make themselves feel better or superior by being condescending to a helpful poster by posting unhelpful and useless information. The wifi performance did improve. I measured it. Also, it's in the change log.

Exactly. it's a bull that they are withholding the update for the note4 until after the s6 is released. wanna know why? So you buy the s6 cause it has lolli already, it's ridiculous the way carriers dictate the duration of the update process. They get the rom from Samsung, then they do their bloat thing, test it in crappy small markets, then release they've been sitting on it for over a month now just waiting for the s6 to drop. They've had so many people call and complain that they started a Web page.. lol that's pretty bad.. Don't blame Samsung for lack of the update, blame your favorite carrier. it them. That's why the g3 got it, the s5, the note3 is in testing in diff markets.. Why would one do that? because they want you to buy the latest greatest hit. Not because the s5 is of more importance due to the numbers sold.. so in conclusion, time for a new s6. Lol
Just noticed that the note 4 is now at tmoble testing phase... my guess is we're 2 weeks behind it.
dont know what is the freaking hold up !
i heard ATT note edge got the lick candy today !
I see that tmobile is testing the lollipop on the note 4, I think after they roll out the upate for the note 4 they would start foucusing on the note edge.
The excuse i got was: Since N4 and Edge are the only 2 phones compatable with Samsung VR1 they were waiting on the manufacturer of the vr to finish so they can begin coding in the VR part to LP. They didnt want to telease LP without the VR stuff teady to go. Aftet seeing all the complaints about battery drain and so on with 5.0 on the N4s that received it, i cant wait to see what happens when you hook up VR to your N4/Edge with 5.0...probably a nice little explosion...lol
Lollipop getting closer! Now at T-Mobile testing phase!

Ha! You have to look in the right places I guess. Problem for me is that I've got things running so sweetly with hyperdrive, foerverlocos theme and some xposed modules I'm a bit reluctant to take the plunge for now. I checked out lollipop on my Note 3 and having ART is a nice improvement but I missed Xposed and even more so, Tweaked! Indeed I put Tweaked back on. Looking forward to hear about folks experience with Lollipop on T-mobile Edge.

did the device reboot into a recovery to install the update? curious is someone dropped the ball and left a open bootloader on the released device OR its just the monthly security patch, prob the latter...
further investigations...it did include a new bootloader. i would hold of on installing this if you want root. you never know
Lol yeah not rooting, leaving it alone
I did not install the update. I just love that they say that ATT wants to install an update and give no more information as to what or why. After my upgrade experience I'm not real trusting and was hoping someone could report what it is. Want to compare?
Sadly, it's probably a bunch of good fixes bundled in with some unwanted bloatware and security "enhancements". Lol
BUT... that's just pure conjecture on my part, as I watch the N7 forums and live vicariously through you all. I'm still happy with my rooted Note 3, can't justify the upgrade cost, can't live without my IR blaster, and so will wait.
So, anyone know whats in the update(is it just the Android Aug security update)? Any chance it really would affect root? For me, the only reason to not root is Samsung Pay and since it doesn't support either one of my cards, not worried about that "feature".

It does contain a new Bootloader, and the update was prob forced upon you. Yesterday my device buzzed in my pocket, heard the ATT ding ding dong sound. Pulled my Note out and it was optimizing apps (about 50 of them). Seems they forced the update to my Note, even though I had clicked "install later" many times through-out the day. bastards!
I believe it's just a security update.

The only way to keep from downloading an update is to have Wi-Fi turned off or disable the update totally with package disabler pro. The phone automatically downloads any update if you are connected to Wi-Fi and will install it even if you hit install later. The phone does the install after the third time you decline it. All of my Samsung phones have done this.

Okay i sh*t you not, I read this on lunch and said in my head there's no way it forced itself, or maybe it's an option to disable under developer settings. Got off lunch and felt my phone vibrate because it was turning back on. Pulled my phone out and saw that it was optimizing apps and I'm like like wtfffffff out really forced itself. I wasnt on Wi-Fi or anything and my phones battery was at like 30% so i honestly couldn't believe it did the update as such a low battery without asking, crazy. ?

The device is brand new. You can expect battery improvements over the next few days, no matter what you do. It takes 3-7 days of charging and use for the battery to reach maximum efficiency.

Coming from Note 7

Hey guys. New to this device, having just jumped shipped from the sinking Note 7.
Just wondering if you all could tell me if this device is easy to root and if the rumors I've heard about rooting this device making it slow, laggy, etc., are true.
Thanks in advance.
Easy to root yes...look on YouTube...but keep in mind that
after rooting your phone will get super leggy and you will need fix some stuff with kernel...that's too much sht... I decided to stay stock... TouchWiz is not that bad actually...enjoying my s7 edge after leaving my note 7 too
Me too , I returned my note 7 today after have for couples day's but for now I'm happy with this device whit out root
I was wondering about this too. I still have my N7 but was thinking of returning it for a S7 Edge
Here is How To (Qualcomm) Root S7/S7 Edge
I have been on rooted stock, modded stock, and now Echoe since early July with good performance and battery life with the basic kernel mods recommended.
Echoe is the best (and really only non-stock ROM0, but has some minor issues - primarily WIFi calling, so if you want that you might stick to stock or the modified stock just released.
Be sure you read the instructions carefully before starting so you can avoid mistakes many have made getting started. In messing around with different setups, I have had to RE-ODIN stock software and re-root several times - can do it in my sleep now - lol.
Note - if you buy a TMo S7 - check which firmware version is on it an download and save that firmware. If you don't want to jump into rooting right off, do not let TMo update the firmware, as it will include the latest bootloader and security patches, which will limit your options.
If you want LTE+ (it is fast), I believe even when rooted that you could ODIN ONLY the ODIN CP module that upgrades the modem and related firmware to the new LTE.
Does the S7E offer anything like Smart Select that would allow me to trace out a picture on a webpage and save it or share it?
I'm on modified stock rooted. Yes you need to use something like trickstermod to change the governor and min/ max frequency. Takes 2 seconds. Runs decently. No major lagging. I have root and a ton of xposed modules up and running without any problems.

What settings do you recommend?
Ondemand governor and set big and little cores to both max and minimum correctly. The eng kernel has them all locked at 1000 and performance which lags like crazy.
Edit:
Make sure lock frequency is enabled and don't forget to apply on boot.

I'm also coming from a note 7. Getting my edge tomorrow. Rooting it doesn't seem to be an issue, also says it can still be rooted on the latest firmware. I'm still researching on how to fix the stupid issues like the lag, hurricane icon etc. Any help or write ups would be awesome and save some of newly edge owned people. I did have an s7 edge as a loaner during the first recall.

I've pretty much gotten it in my head that for the first time since the Note 2, I will be using something else other than a Note. I'll fall back on my Note 4 if I get too homesick.
Besides the S Pen, there is one other feature I'll miss a lot - Secure Folder. It's grown on me in ways I never expected. The simple ease of transition from normal to Secure Folder use is what makes it so good. Having the option of having a completely secure version of any app that only the user can access... I'm hoping Samsung ports it over to the S7E.
It's a decision of either sacrificing the performance upgrade or S Pen and it's features!

Pink line display problem on the S8??

Hi guys
I came from a Galaxy S7 Edge and as much as I absolutely loved that device, I ended up getting the dreaded pink line on the display until I eventually retired it and purchased the Galaxy S8 yesterday. My issue with the S7 is that I rooted it from day one since I am a fan of customization and custom ROMs and therefore I couldn't really take advantage of the warranty. Does the S8 have the same display problem? I'm really hesitant about rooting it and installing custom ROMs and such but at the same time I really want to.
Your advice and opinions are appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Hey mate im a former S7 edge user too loved the device had a friend who had the same device he rooted it and after a while it developed a pink line on the screen he flashed a stock ROM got an OTA update and took it to Samsung they replaced it for him for free nvm depends on different countries and different regulations u could try that if it can work furthermore i have another friend who works for Samsung he told me that was an issue with manufacturing so they replace for free coz of the manufacturing defect i talked to him recently after purchasing the s8 he told me that the s8 had no defect issues since Samsung wanted to make it a bomber upon his saying thats when i was convinced and rooted my device and now i dont regret rooting since i like customizing too.. Hope i helped
@Codex1998 Thanks for your reply, you've been very helpful. Speaking of modding and custom ROMs, what would be your favorite ROM at the moment? I'm thinking I should flash either Bat-Stock or Bat-Man ROMs, but I hear that one of them has a random reboot issue.
What gains would you get if you root your s8?
Hi,.
i also had a s7 edge, was rooted and after maybe ... a half year i got the pink line too BUT i bought the s7 edge by amazon and i've initiated a repair assignment and WITH ROOT i got a full repaired phone back for FREE, And the best of all these the workshop who repaired my phone has replaced with the display a lot of other components like a new accu and so on, all for free. So f*ck on triggered knox status and try to repair your phone, it was a hardware issue not an software issue. Triggered Knox doesnt mean that yo lost your warranty in all cases.

Talking about ROMs at this stage i have tried a ton of Roms out there but have enjoyed BatMan ROM the most if no random reboot issues if you are a fan of mods then BatMan rom is for you since all mods are free not paid like other roms out there which is really amazing for the dev to do furthermore you can join the BatMan rom telegram group and get more advice from there last thing to add is that the dev is really responsive and a very cool/chill guy so if u have any issues you can talk to him or his staff all are cool and really helpful.... Enjoy ROM Hunting
@Codex1998 I asked about the reboot issue on the thread and he quickly replied saying that the kernel was the issue and it was supposedly updated today so hopefully things will work out fine from now on.
Thanks again for all your help. I'll let you know how the whole process goes.
I'm assuming the process, like with the S7 exactly, starts from OEM unlock > flash TWRP > nandroid backup > update modem and bootloader to the latest files > flash custom ROM from within TWRP. Correct?

@kernelu Oh man I am sorry to hear that. I hope they fix it properly. How long have you had the phone? And did the pink line just come up out of no where?
Thanks. Had it for 3 months. The phone was never droped or anything, just woke up with it like this in the morning.
I can't believe that samsung didn't fix this sh*t on a new generation of phones. I mean, it was a relatively common problem for s7 edge... -.- stupid.
Rooting and triped knox doesnt affect warranty in Europe. Dont hesitate a moment. Take the phone back and claim whats yours. 2017 and we still have pink lines and burn ins all over the place. What troubles me the most is that people hesitate to return the phone because they think its there problem. Well its not. The phone should work as advertised.
Got my s8+ from service. They replaced the display. (pink line problem) :good:

You're absolutely right. After I sold my S7 Edge, the buyer took it to Samsung and they replaced the screen for him free of charge, even though I had previously rooted the device and triggered knox. I'm from Egypt so I am guessing the policies of whole Africa region is going to be the same.
