project fi + root - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Is anyone here running project fi and is also rooted? I'm on 7.1.2 and I'm thinking about rooting my pixel XL, and my build is NKG47L. Is there anything I should look out for or stray away from?

Root should have zero effect on Project Fi.
At least ten percent of the board are rooted & on Fi, including myself.

Agreed with the post above. I went from rooted (and occasionally a room) with project fi, and now I'm on Verizon with my Google bought pixel XL, and I'm still doing it.
The only thing you have to worry about is Verizon bought devices, because of the inability to unlock the bootloader.

I bought my Pixel XL direct from Google and have been on Project Fi since I bought it, which was March. I've been rooted since day 1 and never had any issues.

Anyone in U.S. using this phone yet?

Subject asks the question.
If someone using it, I'd be interested in your thoughts on it, where you purchased it, is there an evaluation period (returnable after 14 or 30 days).
I'm interested, but concerned about support.

Doubtful. The global lte variant hasn't been released yet. Unless someone was extremely impatient or visiting the u.s., I doubt anyone has it yet. I've got mine preordered from GearBest for the time being. I didn't think I'd ever purchase another Xiaomi device considering the Mi Note Pro got such horrible software support (still on lollipop), however this phone was just too good to pass up lol

I want to order one it will work on Verizon because it has all global bands

Got a global variant; still only 1 rom version (Chinese with English option). Had to install google services from Mi AppStore (like Mi Mix) and, like the mix, I am finding lots of apps that won't work on this rom. I travel a lot and JetBlue and Delta don't work; also, for some reason, this rom won't support Android Pay. Even though I am using official ROM and locked bootloader, I am getting a message when trying to run android pay that it can't due to security issues (either unofficial rom or unlocked bootloader) - Others on Mi Forums have said the same. Nice phone to look at and I got great LTE speeds but, for someone who travels a lot, too many problems to be my daily driver.
I also got a HUAWEI Mate 9 Pro with global LTE bands - zero problems with the phone; everything I use installed just fine and the phone came with google out of the box. Given the two are almost the same phone; my pick would be the Huawei. I also like that the Huawei has native support for OLED "glance" screen (time/notifications when the screen is off) and you don't have to install third party app like on Xiaomi.
Thanks for that input.
I presume the Mate 9 Pro is in fact the 6GB version. I haven't been able to find it available.
I was also considering that but came to the realization that the global version is not compatible for CDMA / Verizon. One would think that if they are in fact expanding to the U.S. They would want that business too.
I have the Global version and am using it on Verizon. It has a vendor rom installed and I'm trying to put the stock rom on there as the apn settings wont stick. Calls and SMS are fine though.

Which ROM do you have? Can you pass SafteNet test in the "SafteyNet Helper" app?
I have 8.0.13 stock ROM and have not unlocked bootloader, but I cannot pass SafetyNet test to add cards in Android Pay (I've selected HCE and Android pay as default payment, as well as granted all permissions to Android Pay & Google Services). SafetyNet is the road block for me to use Android Pay. It seems 8.0.13 went out on 11/29/2016. I am not sure how long (if ever) I will be able to pass SafetyNet test...

I am happy to announce that after the updated to 8.0.15 ROM, it passes CTS profile check today and I am able to add cards in Android Pay. :good:

Any update here guys? Mine is coming in this week, I had to grab it after the prices went under $500, what can I expect, are the latest official roms any better, I see a global one being discussed on the mi forums, also has anyone heard any news on possible Android 7, seems weird a high end flagship phone to be left behind like this considering my Mi5 is on the official Android 7 over 2 months now?
Yep I've got the Global version and I'm using it on Verizon and have zero issues. Coming from a Nexus 6P, I'm loving it so far, only had it for about a week.
Using it on AT&T, and running into minor issues as I tag along.
1- If you are using the global version on AT&T don't bother giving them the IMEI number of Xiaomi Note 2, instead give them an old phone IMEI that AT&T Recognizes. I wasn't able to register on their network and was only getting HSPA+ instead of 4g LTE.
2- I am running into issues with data not working during phone calls? Anyone else having the same issue?

Total Wireless Branded Nexus 6p?

My Nexus 5x **** the bed so I'm on a search for a replacement. I found what I think is new Total Wireless Nexus 6p for $385 at Walmart. I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can just pop my Verizon sim in and go or if total Wireless locks it.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Total-Wi...75035&wl11=online&wl12=55091210&wl13=&veh=sem
Any help is appreciated. Trying to buy some time to see how pixel 2 is after release.

I did some research and Total Wireless says all there branded phones are locked but there are several people in different forums that said they put a sim card in with different providers and it worked. I'm sure Total Wireless would say it's locked but I don't think that's possible with a Nexus.

I found that info as well. Even if it works, I'm now asking myself if it's worth it when you can get a LG g6 from b&h for $549 shipped.
Situation sucks. R/pickanandroidforme recommended the pixel but the cost and issues I've read don't sit well with me. But my LG died (charging port burnt up among other issues) yet I find myself considering the G6. ?
Anyone ever get an answer on this? TW aka Tracfone says they are not unlocked (rather than saying they are locked ??) but aren't Nexus 6p's all unlocked ? I wonder if these are new or refurbished also - nothing stated in Walmart ad. It seems unless they have had a special hardware mod to these or a locked b/l you could flash one with another 6p ROM and be good to go if it was locked (which I doubt). I suspect they aren't making a penny on the phone price so they just want to get monthly paying customers and don't want people to know they are not locked. Just my guess anyway....
Looks like a stock Nexus 6p to me...
I decided to roll the dice on this since I needed a new Nexus for Google Fi device to replace my recently broken Nexus 6.
Long story short, the device I received from Walmart appears to be a fully stock Nexus 6p.
I took it out of the box, enabled USB debugging and sideloaded the OTA 7.1.2 direct from Google.
It activated with my Google Fi SIM card without issue.
Total Wireless customer service doesn't know what they're talking about. The people responding to the questions about "is this phone unlocked?" are going off the same script for all their other branded phones. But some of the comments on the Walmart page state that people were successfully able to pop in a T-Mobile or other non-Total Wireless SIM. Price is now down to $365 thru Walmart, BTW.
I'm sorta kinda tempted to pick one of these up. I have a Moto X Pure that the USB port was getting wobbly on and I looked to replace it with something that has a fingerprint sensor. Tried out an unlocked LG V20 but returned it. Have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge at the moment but I'm on the fence with it.
Could you test with other carrier? I am also interest to use on AT&T. I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!
Sure Thing, Bud!

Oh yeah, let me get right on that for you, ok? Haha!
Read the posts. Carrier unlocked means carrier unlocked. These phones are barely still available. Get one before they are gone. Even the 32 GB Pixel XL (1st gen) is almost double this price ($670) and they will be relegated to the aftermarket before Xmas comes.

6T on Verizon - SIM Swaps OK?

I've got a 6T about to land this afternoon and I'm debating which of my two lines I'll set it up on.
I've got a rooted Pixel XL daily driver on my main line and an old iPhone 6 that I want to retire on the other. Thinking of doing setup/rooting of my 6T using the SIM from my old iPhone and then when I'm happy with everything swapping SIMs with the Pixel XL.
I know early on people needed to contact Verizon to get their 6T's provisioned properly. Am I going to have to do that now in Jan 2019? If so maybe I should just bite the bullet once and do all my setup on my main SIM.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Yes it is still needed to call in to have cdma-less feature added to the line. Has been since the HTC 11 came out as LTE only on vzw and I doubt it'll change anytime soon unfortunately.

I'm ready to make the move to Oneplus

I've been a diehard Samsung guy all the way back to the S5. I'm on the note 8 now and my wife is on the S9+. I prefer to have my device rooted but Samsung /Verizon has made it increasingly difficult with each new generation of phone.
I've noticed since I am on the Verizon network, there are not many choices to switch to that you are able to unlock the bootloader. Verizon wants to keep them all locked up tight.
In my research I have discovered that the 6T may offer me a way out. I also understand that it's not without it's share of problems. I've noticed many posts with people saying their texts do not work correctly. Many others said they had to call Verizon and tell them the 6t is not a CDMA phone and one member said Verizon would not activate his CDMA-less 6t.
I think I may still be willing to give it a try but one thing I noticed when I do a search for a Oneplus 6t on Amazon, every listing says NOT COMPATIBLE with Verizon. I think they are only saying that because the 6t does not have CDMA capability but it does have LTE and because of that it should be compatible. Am I correct?
I do not want to buy it if I can't use it on Verizon.
I just got my Oneplus 6T last Thursday. It is a tiny bit finicky about getting the drivers to keep working for unlocking, rooting, and flashing, otherwise once I had it set up, to activate it on VZW, I just had to log into my account and make the required CDMA-less choice online and BOOM, it just works.

I bought it straight from oneplus online. It's the non TMobile dual SIM. Took maybe two days.
My Nexus 6 still works, but it's time and I'm happy.

I'm on Verizon contract. I had no issue with getting my 6T on my line switched to cdma-less. Also buy it from OnePlus directly you can buy a warranty replacement plan witch Verizon will not cover cause they don't sell the device. I came from the unlocked Google Pixel 2 XL. I will never buy a phone from Big Red again. Unlocked and free is the way to BE???.

Thank you guys. I agree with you both. I'm so tired of being under their thumb. I like having control of my phone and what's on it.
If I weren't a truck driver I would have already left Verizon long ago and tried to find a cellular service provider that gives me more freedom, but I travel to a LOT of backwoods places where, if I didn't have Verizon, I would have no signal.
Actually, being able to buy unlocked devices that work on Verizon is the ultimate freedom. The best phone on the best network.

The Chinese version will not work.
The international version is the version that work. Buy directly from OnePlus to make sure it't the right version.
I'm using my 6T on Verizon with no issues.
Good point teddyearp, Verizon is the best network and that together with an unlocked phone is the ultimate in freedom.
Thank you tech head, I will be sure to get the international version straight from oneplus.
I did a lot of searching before deciding on the 6t. Am I right that the 6t is the only new phone that you can purchase in the US that is unlocked or can be unlocked and that is compatible with Verizon?

There is also the Google pixel line from Google also. Like I said I came from a pixel 2 XL and I can honestly say since I got my 6t I haven't looked back at my pixel. Way more BANG for my buck. I could have purchased two of the high-end 6Ts (8gb ram and 256gb storage) like I have for the price of one pixel 2 XL. I paid almost $1,200 including warranty with that for a unlocked 128gb Pixel 2 XL. Now for my OnePlus I paid $629 plus a extra $150 for a 2 year warranty. I baby my devices but accidents do happen. Even though I never had one but just in case cause it's better safe then sorry. You won't regret your OnePlus I've been reading about these flagship killers for a few years and been waiting for them to be compatible with Verizon. The long wait is over.
Oh yes that's right. The pixel phones. My son, who is away at college loves his pixel and as hard as it may be to believe, even though I've always used android phones (android being from google), I am extremely anti google and would not buy a pixel. I like apple even less so I use android but I don't use chrome. One of the things I always try to accomplish when I get each new device, is to root it and remove as much bloatware and all the google stuff I can without breaking it. Plus I like to stop as much of the telemetry as I possibly can.
I really appreciate the fact that the oneplus has a much lower price and yet is still powerful. Yes the long wait is over
I can't wait to get my very own flagship killer!
bought my 6t one month ago to replace a pixel 3 xl. i do not regret it one bit. the 6t just feels better in the hand to me. popped the sim out of the pixel and into the 6t and instant working except for MMS and i got on the verizon website and did the chat (couldn't find the link myself for CDMA-less texting) and it worked within minutes. zero issues so far. (sorry for the run-on sentence)

Google Pixel Rant

This applies to all pixel models but why do people suck at selling these phones its like damn near impossable to find a factory unlocked one and the ones you think are factory unlocked are either a dickhead sellers that say its factory unlocked when its verizon or ee or b people who dont know better its hard as hell to find a factory unlocked pixel 2 or og pixel i see people on ebay swappa and more where they go list it as factory unlocked but then you ask questions and find out its a verizon or ee model phone or they just flat out say its factory unlocked and scam you and i get that like no one cares about unlocking the bootloader but some people do and for those people its hard as hell to get your hands on a factory unlocked model
I feel your pain! I'm sitting here typing this on an og Google Pixel 2. Battery is getting worn out but I feel it's worth replacing the battery as I think it's been down hill for Pixel devices since Pixel 2!
